Eriosyce villosa (Neoporteria villosa)

Northern Chile has a group of cacti which were long included in the genus Neoporteria, but then Fred Katterman published a book lumping them all into a greatly expanded concept of Eriosyce. This naming is followed by David Hunt in “The New Cactus Lexicon”, but is rejected by Joel Lode in “Taxonomy of the Cactaceae”. Lode favors keeping the genus Neoporteria, so this is why I have listed two names above. In any case, the group has lots of species with very dark bodies, ranging from short-spined to long-spines; the plant pictured being a long-spined one. The magenta flowers look especially vivid emerging from the dark-bodied plant. From the coast of Chile north of Valparaiso.

CACTUS

Figuring that I’ve tried just about every foliage plant there is, I turn my attention to cactus.  I’ve never had much luck with them in the past, but that’s not going to stop me from trying again.  I especially like the soft ones, and I’m really going crazy over the cute little pots.  Photos, t-b, l-r: old man cactus (Espostoa), feather cactus (Mammillaria plumosa), Arizona snowcap (M. gracilis), rainbow cactus (Echinocereus), Rebutia, Neoporteria (messy hair), M. schiedeana.

A few beauties from the Colorado Cactus and Succulent Society’s annual show and sale last weekend. Scientific names are in the image descriptions. The last two pics are the plants I couldn’t resist buying -- something about a silly blobby little plant really speaks to me.

Eriosyce heinrichiana

This single-headed cactus from northern Argentina came under the name Neoporteria jussieui, but this name has lost favor with cactus taxonomists. The trouble is, they don’t agree what it should be replaced with. David Hunt prefers to sink Neoporteria into Eriosyce, and offers the name Eriosyce heinrichiana for this species. On the other hand, Joel Lode favors retaining Neoporteria, and uses the name Neoporteria curvispina. No doubt the cactus itself is indifferent to all of this, delighting us with its pale pink flowers.

Usually I get splits from pushing growth,

lots of ferts and water. This Capital Cactus Peru clone from

Australia has only received rainwater and gypsum this year.

Must be the abnormally hot sun
