Santosh Bot, from Bankatta, had a rare visitor recently in the Eco-sensitive tourism cottages and the community hall which SMA had designed with many collaborators in Madi valley, Chitwan. Apart from anthropological and social-cultural questions, the visitor wanted to know EVERYTHING about the robust mud walls, the intricate bamboo destails, natural cross ventilation principles, earthquake resistant structural frames. As a former SMA intern, Janek Bosman returned to Nepal to experience first hand the vernacular wisdom and contemporary architecture innovations in Bankatta.
Amidst the picturesque landscape, the airy community hall and cozy eco-cottages stood as witness to community spirit and sustainable living. Santosh Bot, the owner of the Madi Eco-village guesthouse, gave Janek a tour around the village along with the cottages as well. From the robust mud walls to the intricate bamboo craftsmanship, each detail represented of a deep-rooted heritage of the site. Janek even stayed for the night in one of the cottages which was not only comfortable but also a refreshing escape from the May heat. A fruitful (re)visit to the project!

Namaste 🙏🏻 from Bhaktapur, the ancient city of Kings and temples now surrounded by local villagers with the same old thinking. This might be the only city apart from Kathmandu and Lalitpur who still doesn't have that modernised look. And this is a temple having a 5 storey with a 5 tier roof known as Nyatapola built back in the early 70s by then King Bhupatindra Malla. Its considered to be one of the tallest pagoda style temple in Nepal. . . . . #travelnepal2018 #visitnepal2020 #bhaktapur #bhaktapurdurbarsquare #nyatapola #ancientcity #cityoftemples #pagodastyle🏯 #fivestoreyedpagoda #kings #templestreet #templetour #instanepal #instamarketing #instatravel #travelingram #traveladdict #nepaliarchitecture #discovernepal #explorenepal #heritagejourneynepal . . . . SMA's recent activities include an engaging talk session by Architect Jeenus at Pulchowk's ASA exhibition. The talk, titled "Architecture of Transience and Transformation," focused on the innovative approach of repurposing old buildings instead of demolishing them. Architect Jeenus passionately discussed the effectiveness of intervening and transforming existing structures for new purposes. Drawing inspiration from notable projects like the Samsung Opera House and our very own SMA's Kalagaon, he shared valuable insights on the advantages of adaptive reuse within the contemporary architectural context.

In addition to that, panels showcasing the remarkable work of Nepalese architects that were exhibited on were contributed to the exhibition, offering students an insightful glimpse into various projects and architectural practices in Nepal. The entire SMA team also attended the event, ensuring that they were present to answer questions and engage with students who were keenly about the exhibited panels.

SMA also welcomed two interns from SPA, Delhi to the team. As our team continues to expand, we eagerly anticipate sharing the exciting experiences and adventures that lie ahead.
More soon!

This Dashain marks the beginning of an exciting new project for SMA in the Manang Valley, located in the heart of the Annapurna region. Nestled at an altitude of nearly 3,400 meters, we have been invited to design Buddhist Retreat Centre in this stunning and diverse terrain, featuring snow-capped mountains, lush blue pine-juniper forests, rugged landscapes, and meandering rivers that beautifully frame its culturally rich settlements. The breathtaking features of Manang offer any visitors a ton to explore. Before our site visit, we consulted several experts on the region. Prof. Terry Cooke, who completed his Anthropology dissertation on Nyeshyang Valley in 1985 and Architect Amar Gurung, who is from Manang and who designed the Manang Museum which was selected for MAD’23.

Despite our intensive research, Manang’s biodiversity was even richer than we had imagined. The unique culture with deep Tibetan influences, combined with the kindness of its people—who always offered us yak-butter tea in very windy weather—made our experience truly special. We look forward to share more design explorations in the months to come.
As we embark on this new journey in such an exciting location, we take this moment to extend our heartfelt wishes for a happy, healthy, and safe Dashain to everyone. Amidst the challenging times we faced a few weeks ago, may this occasion bring hope and strength, inspiring us to rebuild thoughtfully, cherish our natural surroundings, and move forward in solidarity.

We recently had the privilege of participating in a pre-selected competition organized by the Centre for Learning and Children’s Rights (CLCR), competing with two other Nepali architect teams to design a student-centered school in a small village, Jabgadi, Palpa. The first aim of the school is to serve Nursery to Class 6, with possible future expansion to higher Classes, focusing on practical education and providing scholarships for disadvantaged children.
Internally we organized with all our team members a Design Charrette, coming up with a spectrum of ideas for the school. After developing the concepts further, we learned that CLCR valued our Concept Design the best.
Inspired, we proceeded with pro-contour, minimal cutting design approaches while taking up integrated sun angles, wind patterns, all bioclimatic data-based as sustainability was an important starting point for the principles of the Heartland Academy. Ultimately we came up with a design where the school is a habitat, based on thoughtful design, harmonizing with the natural settings, creating a space where students can thrive academically and personally.

Crafted Sustainable Architecture of SN gets Global recognition!
A little over ten years we had started SMA. A lot of people call us idealists, utopian or dreamers.
We always believe in creating an architecture that harmonizes with its surroundings, embracing local materials, skills and culture while integrating modern knowledge and using innovative techniques.
Today we are humbled by the 15 professional and scientific jury members in Paris, who selected one of our projects as a FINALIST of the best 40 stone architecture buildings in the world !

This achievement, a first ever for our beloved Nepal , is a sign of hope for all designers, all architects, all landscape architects, all structural designers, all environmentalists, all educators, and all media across Nepal.
Kudos to all team members, SMA or other and our dedicated well wishers and principles who have contributed in the 7 years it took to conceptualize, to design, to detail, to shape and make Sagarmatha Next at at a breathtaking altitude of 3800 meters in the beautiful Khumbu.

Goodmorning Houses
Continuing the story of the Sharma and Parajuli families and our task of land development and Vision of their jointly acquired thirteen ropanis land nestled amidst the awe-inspiring panorama of the Himalayas: we present to you The Good Morning Houses in Buchakot, Kavre.
The crafting of the land:
Inspired from our own action architecture in Suntakhan (2020) and Turiyam, we proposed land stabilization using a series of gabion wall. This technique is not only cost effective the land between the gabion walls can be used for landscape/plantation.
Strategically implementing culverts, swales alongside facilitates continued water flow tackling watershed management head-on.
Intensifying Flora:
The landscape essence of the land area is further enhanced by carefully selected indigenous plant species. Utis which help in adding stability to slopes that tend to slip and erode will provide canopy of sun-filtering shade to coffee and cardamom. Moist loving plants like orchids, Zephyr lily, orange lily day blooms near the watershed area while roses, Kahili Ginger, Pink Dhatura flourishes in the sunlight.
Thorny Agavaceae and cacti were strategically placed to act as a natural boundary, adding both beauty and security to the site.
Locating two cottages:
After dividing the land equally for the both families; and finding the best option for road access is from the northeast part of the land the focus was on creating a harmonious living space. The Sharma family cottage is placed at the level of +1416 m with North-east orientation. Meanwhile the Parajuli family the cottage placement is at + 1420 m with pure east orientation. The road weaving tales of connection and camaraderie between the family, complete with enough parking spots for both.

All the preparation work and setting out has been done. Now let us hope for an equally careful, sensitive and pro-ecology implementation.
