★ STUDY TECHNIQUES ( 앰퍼샌드원 )

in which . . . in the height of exam season, you try crazy studying techniques.
genre fluff , headcanons , established relationship , ampers&one x fem!reader (separate) cw food mention in kyrell's , not proofread wc 874 (around 100 per member) request yes note this was so fun to write (i wrote it instead of doing schoolwork wow so smart zanna) net @kstrucknet @chrimatanet @andearnet
KAMDEN ミ 캠든
Kamden understands the importance of studying, and knows why you would cancel date plans to cram in another chapter. What he absolutely doesn’t understand is your studying techniques. Having him hold the book open for you as you lie upside down from your bed, head hanging almost to the floor as you read the textbook passage.
“What is this supposed to help with again?”
“Blood circulation to the brain.”
Now Kamden knows you aren’t studying nursing, and also pulled that studying technique out of your ass. As much as he loves you, there’s only so much more of holding the book before he gives up any help until you pick a more reasonable studying method.
BRIAN ミ 브라이언
Brian is more than a little confused when he finds you studying on the floor with a pencil half the size of your body. Surely, that can’t be practical. He watches from the door for a while before finally asking you what the hell you were even trying to accomplish. You blink up at him innocently, saying how a bigger pencil will translate to better notes. It only takes one look at your notepad and the insanely messy, oversized, and awkwardly spaced words to know that you’re just trying anything now. Knowing how stressed you were with finals, he kindly offers to help you study (granted you ditch the oversized pencils).
JIHO ミ 지호
Jiho isn’t one to judge, especially when it’s his beloved girlfriend who is stressed beyond reason for exams. Given how on edge you’ve been the past few days, he really tries to understand the method to your madness. You pull up to your study desk with one of those giant 5 gallon water containers, barely able to carry the thing. Jiho watches from the side, a little concerned, but also weirdly endeared. He had been reminding you to drink lots of water while you studied, and you were clearly taking his advice… To some degree, anyway. He ends up giggling every time you try to take a sip and can barely lift the thing. (He will get you a reasonably sized mug after not too long).
SIYUN ミ 시윤
Siyun sees the stupidity of your weird studying techniques immediately, but he still relates to the desperation of them. Your army of stuffed animals surrounding you are supposed to help you focus… somehow. Siyun watches in amusement as you jot down notes, talking absentmindedly to Mrs. Cream Puff, a pastel pink bunny plush, and Dark Lord Siyun— a slightly evil looking tiger who you had named after your boyfriend. Siyun thinks about trying to give you tips that might help more, but he finds the entire sight so endearing that he can’t bring himself to remove the plushies. When you reach a frustrating gap in knowledge and hug Dark Lord Siyun to your chest for emotional support, your boyfriend almost melts at the sight, finding it hard to focus on the work he was doing with you in the room.
KYRELL ミ 카이렐
Kyrell— ever the absolute sweetheart he is— makes you food every time you have a long study session ahead of you. He knows how caught up you get in your notes and flashcards, sometimes forgetting to eat, and always drinking way too much coffee in the process. But he’s a little taken aback when you turn the food he gives you into its own technique that will supposedly help you remember quiz answers for biology. With each question right, you reward yourself with a bite of food. Kyrell soon goes along with it, quizzing you himself and celebrating with you at every right answer. You then plan to eat the exact same meal right before the exam, hoping the taste of the food would help you recall the syllabus. It’s doubtful to work, but worth a shot, right?
MACKIAH ミ 마카야
Mackiah is the first one to suggest some crazy study method to you the moment you say you’re stressed about upcoming exams. The boy certainly thinks outside the box, setting up a whole faux obstacle course for review. Saying something about staying active while studying will help you from getting sleepy and forgetting important information. You go along with it because you’ve tried everything at this point, and maybe your boyfriend is right. You’re not sure about the effectiveness of it in the end, though, as you fell on your face more than actually learning about physics. But you end up passing the exam the following week, and you have to give at least some credit to Mackiah, who sacrificed hours in ridiculous attempts at review and recall.
SEUNGMO ミ 승모
You might have procrastinated on studying for your upcoming history exam. So what’s your solution? Dressing up as a Joseon era emperor and pretending like the textbook pages are royal decrees you need to review. It was sure to work perfectly in your head. A little role play could only motivate you further, right? Seungmo walks in on your little skit, surprised to see you in a traditional crown. When you tell him what it’s for, he realizes that he completely forgot he had to study for that exam as well. Panics, but ends up joining you in your insanity. It made perfect sense in Seungmo’s head. Plus, he likes wearing the hat and pretending you were his empress.

your fav mello/near fics??? thank yeww (also love your drawings!)
oohh this reminds me i should pick up my ff.net archival reclist project up again...
it is of note that it's been a looooong while since i've combed the archives and there's a couple of common tropes i don't usually read due to personal taste, so i'm sure there's a lot of good fic i'm unaware of and/or forgetting about! this has totally renewed my interest in making a comprehensive personal reclist >:) perhaps i'll come back and edit this post every now and then.
i owe comments to nearly everyone mentioned here i am SO sorry. it's a lost skill that i am working on developing again. at the very least i've got everyone in one place so i can go down the list this year. i encourage everyone reading from this reclist to leave a comment too!
i wrote "off the top of my head" but this got VERY long so under the readmore it goes
obligatory classics
• the famous @tierfal 's sidetracked (2010) and full of surprises (2009). rated e and m respectively. these are like the allegorical little black dress in the wardrobe of the platonic ideal of the mellonear oneshot. seem to be pretty well known across the ship fandom • stripped (2009) by blueberryash/@tka-trashfire on tumblr. explicit. i haven't read this in a while but i remember it capturing the delicate gossamer tension of the ship in a way that was sooo bittersweet and nostalgic. • to speak of rules and privilege (2008) also by blueberryash/@tka-trashfire, gen, a manifesto on tenderness, soooooooooo soft, changed the game, near being afraid of thunderstorms was immediately adopted into personal canon. big time influence for the way i write near and mello's pre-canon relationship re: big brother, little brother. • an understanding (2008) by blueberryash/@tka-trashfire, rated T, short and sweet, razor sharp prose, the aesthetics of the little piece live rent free in my head. • dual(2011) by ramasi, @ramasi here i believe. rated m. historians say this might be one of the first examples of mellonear choking kink ever recorded,
RARE finds
(please tell me if you enjoy any of these, i want to feel like an explorer that's brought back treasures from far away lands)
•scarification (2012) by gacrux11 on fanfiction.net, rated m, big time dead dove do not eat. sorry this one leans early 2010s era grimdark melodrama but i love it sjkdfkjfd. not enough dead dove fics about the boys if u ask me. • salt in the wound (2007) •tempus fugit (2007), and • white out (2006) by vaudevillain king on fanfiction. net. a beloved rare find. all of them are rather grimdark edgy products of their era, but some of the best the era had to offer. they make me so nostalgic for my teenagehood on fanfiction.net. i get the impression these might've been written even before death note was finished? • birthday smut (2009) by kleine_aster on livejournal. explicit. this one is SO funny to me because it is both really, really good, very in character, but unfortunately it suffers from almost satirical misogyny that afflicted fujoshis back in the day. near literally is like oh that bitch... like. he would not fucking think that but i can edit quickly in my brain as i read. bisexual mello rights! otherwise really sexy imo. i might be writing something that's kind of in conversation with this fic.
contemporary favorites:
• you've heard about it before and you will hear about it again: the archer ensnared (2023) by jabbernatty, rated e. a jessaerys obligatory syllabus read, the fic that made me go fulltime yaoi disease. i owe so much to jabbernatty they are my white whale my friend my enemy the writer i've psychically imprinted on from the beginning. honestly too scared to even leave a comment given the jessarys archer ensnared lore. may one day may contact and pray i don't come across as insane • postmortem (2023) by the_hemlock true gen, a favorite of ALL time. it's only tangentially mn really, it is 99% about near trying to piece together the mystery of lawlight post-canon, but the characterization and prose are some of if not the best i've ever come across. reads like it could be a piece of canon material. if you only read one fic on this list i'd pick postmortem. • it's friday i'm in love by neallo/@neallo rated m. possibly my all time fave in the neallo cinematic universe. something about the after-hours longing and the standing in the kitchen by the refrigerator lights, as the poets say. i love when stories feel like you're cutting out a window to peer into a larger universe that is just out of reach. perfectly captures what it is like to have a maddening crush • i want to hold you (hostage)(2023) by neallo/@neallo rated e. thee defining fic of this current modern mellonear era. manages to walk the line of kinky/sexy/sweet/fluffy all at once. plot twist of the century in the last chapter. near is properly as bananas insane as mello is in this fic, which is the marker of a good mellonear dynamic. really everything by morgan neallo is a safe bet for a great read • there's nothing i want but you (2023) by neallo/@neallo rated t. wammy's era mellonear obsessiveness that is soooo teenagery and yet a portent of just how codependent they might one day get. cute and ominous. • armageddon/kill game (2024) by bolide/@bolide-archive came out of nowhere a couple of months ago and ascended to the top of the game like a dark horse. rated m, chess au. one of my favorite interior mello narrations and one of the most similar to my own interpretation. such naturally talented prose. i rotate lines from this in my head all the time. still in progress but i have faith that it will be completed :') • how to burn down the sacred loom (2023) by dornishviper/@vriskarlmarx a contemporary CLASSIC. the less you know going in the better. beautiful prose, beautiful structure. they don't make fic like this anymore • the house always wins (2023) by mer_curia/@vivi-scera. screaming with my mouth closed. holds a special place in my heart given that it is my posting that convinced vi to give the ship a try, and i was rewarded with a fic that is so catered to my tastes i honestly had to read it through my fingers. SO good, the manifesto on wammyscest, so rather controversial. heed the warnings. • moonlight (2023) by tsukinousagi/@quicktimeeventfull rated t. an austere, cold little glimpse into a vampire au. it's giving let the right one in. so melancholic. one of the saddest near examinations out there. •proximity tells (2018) by abysmallypresent, rated m. truly lives up to death note's second-by-second minutia while managing to keep up the tension the entire time. great characterization. •silhouettes (2015) by bad blood/eroticcodependence, @wxmmyshouse on tumblr. unrated, post-canon compliant. made me CRY! elegantly short and simple, bittersweet and so so wistful. •arsonist's lullabye (2023) by tzviaariella/@tzviaariella. rated t. this one has a heart-wrenching air of realism to it that exists outside the chaotic universe of death note, one of those examinations of picking up the pieces after the titans have all gone away. very bittersweet.
honorary mentions
• let's die somewhere prettier (2020) by firesafinething also one of my absolute favorites, unfortunately it is discontinued and it is likely it will never be completed. sad! the premise seemed SO promising. in my mind i file it right next to postmortem mentioned above. the exploration of the tragedy of 27 year old near we could have had in a better timeline. one day i will leave a comment so good maybe it will bring back the fic from the land of the dead • august underground by me & @firebuggg rated e, in progress. >:) (shamless self promo)

Herodotus and Thucydides: Greek Historiography and Intellectual History of the 5th century BCE
"Brief description of the course
The course offers an opportunity to study the fascinating works of two most important and interesting Greek writers and intellectuals of the 5th century BCE who invented history, or at least the writing of it: Herodotus and Thucydides. For all their differences, Herodotus and Thucydides both set out to explore, and to make sense of, historical developments and forces that shaped human society and the world they lived in. Both engaged in an intricate intellectual dialogue not only with earlier Greek poetry and thought, but also with many new, often radical political, religious, and scientific ideas and theories that emerged in the 2nd half of the 5th century BCE. Yet in doing so, they developed diametrically opposite modes of historical thinking as well as fundamentally different visions of the universe and man's place in it. We will look carefully at, and compare, the most important aspects of their groundbreaking and highly experimental works in the context of Greek literary, cultural, and intellectual history of the archaic and classical ages. Attention will also be paid to the reception of their works, and their philosophies of history, in the Western tradition, from Plutarch and Tacitus to Hobbes and Marx."
This is a relatively old seminar (2016, under the direction of Pr. Michael Lurie), but I find that its presentation that I reproduced above and its more particular thematology (which can be found at the link that I give) are extremely interesting and enlightening. I don't know whether the lectures from this seminar have been published in form of book or on the net, something which would be very felicitous.

I have ever truly hated only one person my whole life,
Much ironically, it is one of the men I once adored.
He told me about picket fences and how I'd be his wife,
Told me I'd never feel down or ignored.
He took my hands and traced my palms,
Whispered life was full of commas and semicolons,
That I should dream beyond the sky and stars,
That the universe was too finite to be ours.
He had me kneel at his sacred alter,
And made me lick his love off of his feet.
He broke me until I shattered and faltered,
Until I was dirt on the sole of his feet.
I drank his love like a woman parched,
His latest victim was just marked.
I let him take all of me to a place of paradise,
Where our heart beats were all but synchronized.
He did all that with a smile so soft,
And a voice of the gods.
He drove me dumb and daft,
While he played around with his words like cards.
He murmured me lies,
And promised me fantasy,
I forgot the world when I saw his eyes,
It compelled me to fall mindless into insanity.
And everytime I wanted to leave,
He wouldn't let me be.
He claimed my lips with insatiable hunger,
Used it to drain away my anger.
The divinity of his mouth made me stay,
The shade of blue in his eyes made me endure.
Syllabus rolled off of his tongue made me stay,
Of that, I will forever be sure.
He breathed as a beautiful deception,
For him, everything I'd abided by was exception.
He stole moments I was to treasure in the test of time,
He brought me to the streets, with or without dime.
He spoke in quotes and poetry,
Made every phrase and word rhyme.
Made me admire every inch of his soul's tapestry,
Made love feel far from a crime.
He loved me with hatred,
Made me grovel for kind words.
He hated me with love,
Grinned as I fell to my knees, for the smallest mirth.
It has been years since I last saw that face,
Ages since I last pecked those cheeks,
Since I last felt my breath hitch at that voice,
Since I last savored those moments, so unique.
I now hate him in a way I don't recognize,
Everything about him is extreme, reckon I.
But this deep loathing rooting in me,
It is too harsh for me to show.
I hate that he wasn't beautiful like a God,
Or sinfully addictive like the devil.
No, all he was was human,
All he'll ever be is as human as me.
And I hate myself for falling for someone simple as him,
Hate myself for talking of him like the subject of a hymn.
But I chose him through all the madness,
Not knowing the future is of much meaner fragments.
For all that life's given me,
My first love was not a gift,
No matter how hard I wanted it to be.
I have now lost him in the crowd,
Forgotten the rhythm of the song we call ours,
Broken the swear words I once vowed,
After all, don't they all wilt, the flowers?
But, It does not matter what I do,
At the end, always, when I die,
If there's one person my mind would run to,
I suppose it would be him, drunk and high.
For hatred is the innocent child of naviette and hope,
She cannot be blamed for what she is,
Regardless of the regret she traps within her.
So, yes, mother,
I kissed a stranger,
But I also loved him.
He told me he did too,
But I doubt he meant it.
Yes, father,
A boy broke my heart,
But this is more than hurtful.
He destroyed my being and sucked the life out of me.
Now, tell me, am I to believe in love?
Isn't it the net that traps the dove?
Maybe, before you warned me about the boys,
You should have told me about my own kind.
Turns out, we'd do anything for the pleasure of joys,
Girls like me, so reckless, so blind.
Oh, drunken gods of worry and slaughter,
Have I always been your favorite daughter?
Love,
Anonymous.

In a mandatory course on "structural racism" for first-year medical students at the University of California Los Angeles, a guest speaker who has praised Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel led students in chants of "Free, Free Palestine" and demanded that they bow down to "mama earth," according to students in the class and audio obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.
youtube
Lisa "Tiny" Gray-Garcia, who has referred to the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks as "justice," began the March 27 class by leading students in what she described as a "non-secular prayer" to "the ancestors," instructing everyone to get on their knees and touch the floor—"mama earth," as she described it—with their fists.
At least half of the assembled students complied, two students said. Gray-Garcia, a local activist who had been invited to speak about "Housing (In)Justice," proceeded to thank native tribes for preserving "what the settlers call L.A.," according to audio obtained by the Free Beacon, and to remind students of the city’s "herstory."
The prayer also included a benediction for "black," "brown," and "houseless people" who die because of the "crapatalist lie" of "private property."
"Mama earth," Gray-Garcia told the kneeling students, "was never meant to be bought, sold, pimped, or played."
So began a long and looney lecture that shocked some students at the elite medical school and has led to calls for an investigation. Wearing a keffiyeh that covered her entire face, Gray-Garcia, a self-described "poverty scholar," led the class in chants of "Free, Free Palestine" as faculty and staff looked on in silence, according to people in the course and contemporaneous text messages reviewed by the Free Beacon.
One of the onlookers was Lindsay Wells, a pediatrician at UCLA and the director of the mandatory first-year course, "Structural Racism and Health Equity," who did not respond to a request for comment.
Gray-Garcia later referred to modern medicine as "white science" and inveighed against the "occupation" of "Turtle Island"—that is, the United States—before asking students to stand for a second prayer. This time, nearly everyone rose.
When one student remained seated, according to students in the class, a UCLA administrator, whom the Free Beacon could not identify, inquired about the student’s identity, implying that discipline could be on the table.
"The net effect was that UCLA staff intimidated first-year medical students into participating in a religious service in derogation of their own personal beliefs," UCLA’s Jewish Faculty Resilience Group wrote to university chancellor Gene Block on Sunday. "There needs to be an urgent and thorough external review and investigation of the [medical school’s] curriculum and systemic antisemitism."
UCLA and Gray-Garcia did not respond to requests for comment.
The surreal spectacle is the latest controversy to envelop the "Structural Racism and Health Equity" class, launched in the wake of George Floyd’s death as a part of the medical school’s "anti-racism roadmap."
The course became the subject of a civil rights complaint in January after it separated students into race-based discussion groups—one for white students, another for African Americans, and a third for "Non-Black People of Color." UCLA cancelled the exercise after a Wall Street Journal editorial highlighted the complaint.
More unwanted attention came in March when the Daily Wire published portions of the course’s syllabus, which includes units on "settler colonialism" and recommends a podcast about "Indigenous womxn’s health." Students are also urged to read an essay, "Decolonization is not a metaphor," that describes the "epistemic, ontological, cosmological violence" of "the settler."
Gray-Garcia’s talk offers a window into the way these concepts are shaping the classroom experience at one of the top medical schools in the country—and raises serious questions about how that school vetted a speaker with a long history of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic posts.
"When u resist after decades of relentless poLicing [sic], killing & terrorizing," Gray-Garcia tweeted on Nov. 1, "that’s not ‘terrorism’ that’s justice."

Israel, she declared in 2018, is "amerikkklan."

News of Gray-Garcia’s lecture comes as the Department of Education is investigating UCLA over a string of anti-Semitic episodes on campus, including an incident in which students bludgeoned a piñata with a picture of Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s face. "Beat that f—ing Jew," one student allegedly shouted. In a separate incident, UCLA moved an event with former Israeli foreign minister Tzipi Livni online due to threats of protests.
Beyond her anti-Israel posts, Gray-Garcia’s writings include a book called How to Not Call the Po’Lice Ever and a poem, "Dear KKKolumbus," dedicated to black people killed by law enforcement.
"Pop - Pop/Our babies have been shot," the first stanza reads. "By these occupying armies called KKKops."
==
Students and their families pay tens of thousands of dollars to go to this school and be mandatorily subjected to this insane trash.
Lawsuits. Lots and lots of lawsuits.
