Rehab plant update!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got this Calathea network in the mail around early February when we were experiencing low lows in temperature. Even with a heat pack it struggled to make it after being left at the post office for the weekend. I have done everything under the sun to keep this alive. I’ve split the roots, hydrogen peroxide them, propagated them, taken the roots out of propagation stations and moved to soil, and then just stuck it’s remaining bits in this new pot and placed them in my cabinet. With nothing peaking the surface for weeks, something started to slowly present itself leading rise to a few little nubbins peaking the soil. With tons of humidity and luck later here she is, displaying herself so stunningly with new growth to spare. ❤️‍🔥🥹❤️‍🔥 This is her redemption arc <3

I thought it might be nice to share a bit about what PhD student life is like since before I started it, I really had no idea what to expect.
I have an office that I share with 3 other PhD students at my institute. It is in an old, historical building at the Munich Botanical Garden.
Let's take a tour around my desk:
First, my homemade Darwin crossstitch (pattern compliments of @shitpostsampler) to remind me that all scientists have bad days.
Tumblr media
It sits behind my wonky dragon tree (Dracaena marginata) who I rescued from the trash outside my apartment. Who throws away a whole ass tree?
Tumblr media
He's recovering beautifully, considering how fucky and sad he was when I pulled him from the bin.
Tumblr media
Above my unnecessarily giant computer monitor I keep part of my expansive plant collection. Pink princess philodendron (Philodendron erubescens) w/handmade moss stick, my beloved jewel orchid (Macodes petola), zebra plant (Tradescantia zebrina) in owl pot (courtesy of my labmate, since I am the bird person) and poorly mounted staghorn fern (Platycerium bifurcatum).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Little baby jewel orchid! He flowered recently and I am so proud of him.
Tumblr media
Then there's my Cladonia collection, and my bottle of Icelandic lichen (Cetraria islandica) booze.
Tumblr media
On the top shelf is my Calathea musaica 'Network', and jar of discarded lab lichens. I will figure out a use for them eventually. For now they are just aesthetic.
Tumblr media
Then there's my monstera Peru (Monstera karstenianum) in a pot I "salvaged" from a cemetery. Pretty sure it's cursed, but nothing I can do about that now. Also the baby succulents off my mystery flea market sedum. Behind my desk you can see my German sailing cookbook, Florentine bat notebook, Pikachu of encouragement, and turtle postcard. The turtle is one of many who live in the greenhouse that I visit when work gets stressful. Also a magnet of my favorite Minoan goddess--tits out, snakes in hands, cat on head.
Tumblr media
This is desk ant. She appears to have no colony and just hangs out with me all day. I have tried to track her and find where she comes from but she just runs around in circles on my desk for hours so I have given up. Sometimes I give her a little bit of my tea to drink. She is the backbone of this working group.
Tumblr media
Anyway, if you ever see a scientist's office that isn't cluttered and chaotic, they are doing it wrong.

Plant of the Day
Tuesday 6 June 2023
It was exciting to find that not only was my Calathea ‘Network’ (Goeppertia kegeljanii) producing new foliage but also flowering. This plant originated in the tropical rainforests of South America in Brazil.

It's Houseplant Spotlight time again! Last week I said I would do my calathea--I forgot that I had already featured my network calathea (which is thriving, btw, I should probably do a follow-up), but I meant my pinstripe calathea, because it's one of my favorites. Here it is!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Calatheas are lovely houseplants--they like shady, humid conditions, and do not like drafts. I've read that they are hard to care for, but I haven't particularly found that to be the case, at least not yet. I got mine as a Mother's Day gift, so it hasn't been through the winter, yet. I'll probably move it up to the bathroom with the other humidity lovers, since the other calathea has been doing so well there.
The thing I like best about it is the foliage. It is a wonderful dark green color, and with thin pale pink stripes that literally look like they were painted on with a paintbrush.

Cleaned my bathroom, just have to mop the floor n clean off the windowsill! Featuring my healthiest Adansonii, a struggling calathea network(calatheas hate me), and a pearls n jade pothos! Oh and some philo and neon pothos cuttings. Pretty sure that neon doesn't have a node so I'm just nurturing a zombie I guess.
My particular expressions of autism make it really hard for me to clean, especially places like bathrooms and kitchens, so I'm really proud of myself for getting this done, even though my hands are trembling from suppressed revulsion. Basically the entire bathroom(all bathrooms) are realms of BAD TEXTURE(tm) and I tend to have panic attacks if my bare skin touches even the floor of the shower(I wear flipflops) so this was really...really challenging for me. Aaaah my fingertips are tingling. I wore gloves but still! Augh! Huzzah gloves though cuz there's no friggin way I could have done any of this without them. Ok I gotta stop thinking about it or I'm gonna start twitching

I've decided to start a new blog feature where once a week I make you look at one of my houseplants. I realize I could start a sideblog for this, but this is Tumblr, subjecting you to my other interests is compulsory.
First up is going to be a bit of an outlier, but it's because I wanted to get in a "before" picture. Yesterday, I was at the Lowe's to pick up a new garden hose and came home with four new houseplants ("If I am getting sent to Bought Too Many Houseplants Jail anyway, I might as well go big," I told Mr. P, who laughed and told me how pretty all my new houseplants are). Anyway, I was very excited to find a Network Calathea (Calathea musaica) on the clearance rack.
Tumblr media
I had seen one of these at the fancy-ass plant nursery a few months ago and took a picture because I liked it so much, but did not want to spend $40 on a houseplant. Check out the cool pattern on the leaves! How is this a living thing?? It's both cyberpunk and solarpunk at the same time.
Tumblr media
It's not super-healthy looking at the moment, but honestly, this is pretty good for the Lowe's clearance rack. It was $8, and came in a pretty nice self-watering pot, and I'm excited to see if I can get it back to thriving. It likes humidity and diffused light, so it's gonna live on the bottom of the big plant rack I keep in my bathroom for all the humidity-lovers.
Please wish my new baby some love, and I'll give you an update in a month or two!
