Blog post #2, Media Assessment of Issue
In this blog post I will share my analysis of 3 articles from reputable news sources concerning gun control and second amendment rights. One article is from a left-leaning source, one from the right, and one is neutral.
Article #1, Liberal, CNN: Virginia Beach Mass Shooting
Tumblr media
Subject: This article is trying to convey the message that there is a direct correlation between the number of guns in america, and the number of gun related homicides and suicides.
Author:  Jill Fillipovic authored the article Fewer Guns Mean Fewer Killings, and We All Know it. Filipovic is an American feminist, author and lawyer. She has previously written for feminist blogs such as Feministe, as well as cosmopolitan. She has written for other news sources besides CNN that are quite neutral on the political scale such as Washington Post, New York Times, and Time Magazine. Based on this information she is likely a centrist, however her tone in the article, and heavy involvement in feminist arguments and sources convey that she leans heavily toward the left.
Context:  The article was written in june, recently after a mass shooting. This menas that the source will strike a lot closer to home for the citizens of america, as they have recently experienced a tragedy.
Audience: The source was published By CNN, and while CNN only slightly leans left, the source was most likely published for liberal readers, people who advocate for stronger gun control. The source was not very objective, and did not consider other options beside restricting the number of guns in America.
Perspective: This article is definitely subjective, you can tell that the author has a liberal view on gun rights just from the title. The perspective of the author is that we need to remove guns from the hands of civilians, and doing so will prevent gun related homicides and suicides. This is in opposition to the conservative view that removing guns from civilians will increase gun violence
Significance: The author recounts a recent shooting to support her claim, and talks about the lack of action that has been taken by politicians. The verifiable evidence is that no recent laws have been passed, and that the majority of homicides are gun related
Article #2, Neutral, Time Magazine: The Fight Over Gun Control Isn’t Really About Guns
Tumblr media
SIGNIFICANCE: The author uses several charts comparing the viewpoints of gun owners and non gun owners to showcase the differing perspective on the issues at hand, these statistics are verifiable facts, and it is interesting to see how the answers differed. Additionally the author includes quotes from people in both political and gun-rights affiliation to further showcase the differing perspectives.
SUBJECT: This article is trying to convey the message that the argument over gun control is actually an argument over the sense of freedom and independence that guns represent to americans. Central to the argument is the author’s ability to look at both sides, and convey the strong feelings and outcomes that come with gun violence by recounting a recent mass shooting.
AUTHOR: The author of this article is Charlotte Alter, a national correspondent for Time Magazine, who’s work has also been published in New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. Her political affiliations are unclear, she likes to cover hot political issues such as feminism, political campaigns, climate change, and gun violence, but it is hard to say what her positions on these issues are, as is demonstrated by her neutral tone in the Time article.
CONTEXT: The source was produced in Las Vegas, on October 5, 2017, four days after the deadly shooting it describes. The effect of this is that the tragedy is still fresh in the minds of the readers, as well as the author as it happened in her backyard. This highlights that there is a problem with gun control in its current state.
AUDIENCE: This source conveyed the horror of the Las Vegas shooting to effectively alert the mass media - the people for whom the source was published - of the horrific effects that guns can have, all while staying unbiased and presenting arguments from both left and right political viewpoints. Time Magazine published this article, and being a relatively neutral source It seems the reliability and objectivity are on point.
PERSPECTIVE: This text Is definitely objective.
Article #3, Conservative, Fox News: Tony Perkins: Solution to Gun Violence Isn’t What You Think
Tumblr media
SUBJECT: This article is presenting the idea that the solution to gun violence is not to simply restrict gun ownership laws, but to strengthen morality and religion in our government to stop individuals from becoming the type of person to commit such a crime.
AUTHOR: Tony Perkins is aconservative politician, previous police officer, and christian. His credentials are that he is the president of the Family Research Council, has served two terms in the louisiana house of representatives, and was appointed to the United States Commission on International religious Freedom. As he obviously states, his religious affiliations affect his view on gun violence, and his experience as a police officer prove his credentiality on the subject as he has experienced gun violence first-hand.
CONTEXT: This article was published in October of 2019, this article was not a response to a recent mass shooting, but more of an opinion piece by Perkins, conveying his experiences and opinions he has formed over time.
AUDIENCE: This article was published by fox, a conservative news source, and the article is quite clearly geared towards a religious demographic, meaning it may not be the most objective as it is targeting a more narrow audience.
PERSPECTIVE: This text is subjective, the viewpoint conveyed is that stricter gun control laws will not have a large impact on gun-violence, and instead more emphasis should be placed on religion to increase morality of american citizens, stopping the problem at the source. I don’t fully agree with the argument presented. For one, the proposed solution may infringe on people’s freedom of religion, and while I don’t believe super strict gun control laws will solve the problem, I think certain preventative measures can be taken to decrease the likelihood of giving a gun to someone who is not mentally fit to own one.
SIGNIFICANCE: Perkins cites our founding fathers to back up his claim, stating that the marginalization of faith and religion is directly correlated with the increase in violent people. He also cites verifiable evidence, such as the statistic that 80% of gun crimes are committed with illegal guns.
Between all three of these sources, I found the key similarity was that each article had accounts of gun related violence: The first two articles were published recently after mass shootings and had graphic descriptions of them, and in the third article Perkins recounted his experience losing friends to gun violence as a former police officer. The main difference I found was the tone throughout each article. Time magazine kept a very neutral and calm tone, while CNN and Fox were more opinionated, with Fox being the more opinionated out of those two.
I identified most with Article 2 from CNN, as I agree that these mass shootings are terrible tragedies, but I can see the arguments from both sides as valid. I don’t know enough about the subject yet to make opinionated claims, however I do not believe religion will solve the issue, nor do I believe restricting all guns will completely solve it. Much like the tone of article 2, I am observing, and listening to arguments from both side

the wedding night
Summary: A tale of dancing, vodka sodas, and the frustrating presence of a toddler when all Waverly really wants to do is get off with the hot redhead she meets at her sister’s wedding.
(Consider this my contribution for the final day of Wynonna Earp Appreciation Week!)
Read on AO3.
“Another, please!”
Draining the last of her vodka soda, Waverly places the empty glass down on the bar and flags down the bartender. It’ll be her third of the night but she isn’t feeling the effects yet, and probably won’t until the fourth or fifth. The wedding reception featured a three course meal from the best catering company within fifty miles of Purgatory (Waverly would know, being the one who booked them because Wynonna’s response to planning her own wedding was to make a very thorough inspection of the liquor cabinet at the homestead) and Waverly’s stomach is lined with enough good food to soak up the alcohol.
Waverly isn’t drinking to get drunk, anyway. It’s just that when the other option is to watch Wynonna and her new husband dance happily together while everybody coos over the happy couple, making use of the open bar seems like the better idea.
She is an Earp, after all.
Today is a day that Waverly never thought would come; the day that Wynonna, a notorious commitment-phobe, is choosing to settle down and take a husband. It’s a big shock to anybody who knows Wynonna even the slightest, but it’s hitting Waverly particularly hard.
Waverly always thought that it would be the other way around, that she would be the one in the huge white dress publically declaring her love for her soulmate in front of all of her loved ones, while Wynonna sat alone at the bar finding solace in the bottom of a glass and making cynical comments about the impermanence of love.
Waverly is happy for Wynonna, of course she is. But that doesn’t mean that she can’t also be sad for herself.
“So, what is the maid of honor doing drinking alone at the bar?”
Waverly looks up from the drink she’s been swirling around its glass with a straw as an unknown redhead slides onto the stool next to hers. The woman flags down the bartender, ordering herself a martini, then turns her attention to Waverly with her eyebrows raised and the barest hint of a smile teasing at her pink lips as she waits for an answer.
“And you are…?”
Waverly recognises the woman from earlier in the day – she remembers setting eyes on her during the ceremony and being a little envious of how good the dark blue dress that clings to her curves looks on her – but they’ve never actually met before and Waverly thinks that it’s good manners to at least get a stranger’s name before spilling her deepest secrets to them.
“I’m Nicole,” the woman replies, holding out a hand, which Waverly tentatively shakes. “Nicole Haught.” Nicole leans forward slightly, a knowing look in her eyes, as she says, “And you are Waverly Earp. Sister of the bride, maid of honor and, in my humble opinion, the prettiest girl in the room.”
“Are you always this forward?” Waverly asks shyly, her cheeks blushing delicately as she flusters under Nicole’s gaze. She has to admit though, after a whole day of listening to everybody fuss over Wynonna (and rightfully so, Wynonna looks gorgeous in her wedding dress) it’s quite nice to be the object of somebody’s flattery.
“Only when I see something that I like,” Nicole replies, as smoothly as if she has practiced these lines one hundred times before approaching Waverly. “So, you never did tell me why you’re drinking alone at your sister’s wedding.”
“I usually love weddings,” Waverly begins to explain. She gestures around the room, to where everybody is dancing and smiling, to where the drinks are flowing and the music is pumping out from the heavy speaker system on either side of the DJ, before continuing, “I mean, why wouldn’t I? They’re a celebration of love, two people coming together and promising to stick by each other’s side for the rest of eternity.” Waverly raises a single eyebrow and adds, slightly as an afterthought, “Of course, around forty percent of marriages end in divorce but at a wedding everybody ignores that and believes that this marriage is going to be one of the sixty percent that doesn’t.”
“If you love weddings, what’s different about this one?” Nicole takes a sip of her martini, before placing the glass down on the bar and holding up a hand to stop Waverly from answering, before she continues, “Wait, don’t tell me. You’re in love with Dolls.”
“God, no!” Waverly shakes her head with a laugh. “I’m not that much of a cliché!”
Waverly pauses for a few seconds to take a drink, before she grimaces and decides to finish her explanation.
“I was engaged,” she tells Nicole. “To a man. Perry. Rich, handsome, kind, the whole deal really.” Waverly pauses to contemplate how life used to be with Perry, how he provided her with stability and a moderate amount of happiness. “But somehow he wasn’t enough and I ended it. That was just over a week ago. Seeing two other people who are happily in love with each other promising to spend the rest of their lives together is pretty much the last thing I want to be doing right now. But I can’t miss my own sister’s wedding!”
Nicole reaches out with one of her hands and places it over Waverly’s, a welcome warmth that bring her a little bit of comfort.
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Nicole tells her honestly. “Sometimes you can have the greatest person in the world by your side but if there isn’t that spark, then it’s never going to be perfect. And it sucks, but if that person just isn’t right for you, then you can’t force it.” Nicole leans a little closer, then adds, “I say that as part of the forty percent.”
Her eyes widening as she realises what Nicole is telling her, Waverly asks, “You were married?”
“It was a shotgun wedding in Vegas,” Nicole nods with a laugh, shaking her own head and the incredulity of the situation. “She was a great woman – she still is – and for that one night, and the two and a half months after we got married, we both thought it would work. But it didn’t, and so we split. Very amicably, I might add. We still Skype each other every weekend and she tells me about her new girlfriend and her job at the hospital while I complain about the single life and how frustrating it is to be the only woman at the station.”
“The station?” Waverly queries confusedly.
“Oh, sorry,” says Nicole. “I’m a cop.”
Waverly’s eyes nearly pop out of her head as she processes this new piece of information, and before she knows what is happening, she finds herself mentally replacing Nicole’s dress with the uniform of a police officer. The dark blue dress is gorgeous, but there’s just something about the visual of Nicole in a pristine uniform with a gun in her hand and a pair of handcuffs dangling from her belt that has Waverly’s mouth suddenly feeling incredibly dry.
“Oh, wow!” Waverly chokes, taking a quick sip of her drink to sooth her dry mouth, though it is a different kind of thirst that she’s suffering from. “So you’re a friend of Dolls then?”
“Xavier and I trained together at the police academy,” answers Nicole, with a nod. “Then he went off to do whatever mysterious Special Forces thing it is that he does, while I became a local flatfoot. We don’t see each other often but we exchange Christmas cards. I have to admit, I was surprised when I received the wedding invitation and I just had to come to see what kind of woman could tie down a guy like Dolls!”
“Wynonna is quite something,” Waverly grins.
“Can I let you in on a secret?” asks Nicole. Waverly’s face sobers and she nods, which Nicole takes as an invitation to lean closer, before whispering, “So is her sister.”
Waverly glances away, blushing at the compliment, but she can’t help the smile that passes her lips. Nicole, though just a stranger until not too long ago, seems to know exactly what to say to lift Waverly’s mood. Before Nicole’s arrival at the bar, Waverly has been counting down the minutes until it would be acceptable for the maid of honor to leave the wedding reception and retire to her hotel room upstairs. But now, Waverly finds herself wanting to stay here in the company of this charming police officer for a little bit longer.
Waverly picks her glass up off the bar, draining the last few dregs through the straw before putting it back down and pushing herself off the bar stool that has been her home for a good portion of this evening. Gesturing with a nod of her head towards the crowded dance floor, Waverly looks up at Nicole with a hopeful smile on her face.
“Dance with me?”
Nicole’s face cracks open into a wide smile and she finishes her own drink quickly, before taking Waverly’s outstretched hand.
“Well how can I say no to an offer like that?”
With Nicole’s hand in her own, Waverly leads the way to the dance floor, a winding path past the large circular tables and abandoned chairs, until they are on the edge of the crowd dancing merrily in the centre of the reception room. Not too far away, Wynonna is quite the sight, headbanging with a couple of the friends she met on her European travels a few years ago, a glass of whiskey in one hand and her fourteen month old daughter held against her side with the other arm.
But Waverly doesn’t want to pay attention to Wynonna. Not when there’s a gorgeous redhead in front of her, eyes lit up like it’s Christmas morning, waiting to dance with her.
It takes them a few songs to get fully comfortable dancing with each other. They start off holding hands as they nervously move their bodies to the music, then Waverly gets a little bolder and drapes her arms around Nicole’s neck, to which Nicole responds by placing each hand in a respectful position on Waverly’s waist. Their new positioning means that they’re a lot closer, bodies flush against each other. Waverly can feel every movement of Nicole’s hips, can smell Nicole’s musk each time she inhales, can see the tiny flecks of gold in the thin ring of dark brown that surrounds Nicole’s blown pupils.
Waverly wants to kiss Nicole. That much becomes apparent alarmingly soon after Nicole’s hands find their way to Waverly’s waist. She wants nothing more than to bury her hand in those short red curls and bring Nicole’s mouth to hers.
But then Nicole’s eyes darken almost imperceptibly, as if she knows the exact direction that Waverly’s thoughts have just taken, and Waverly realises that actually, she wants quite a lot more than that.
Waverly has a very nice hotel room all to herself three floors up from where they are now, with a mini-bar and a lovely king-sized bed that would be ideal for an assortment of very appealing activities, but most of all the hotel room has privacy. The wedding guests are all having a great time and Waverly doubts that anybody would pay too much attention to the maid of honor slipping out of the party slightly early with her hand clasped firmly with the hand of an attractive redhead.
There’s just one fundamental flaw in the plan.
“Nicole, I have to tell you…”
Waverly doesn’t have the chance to get all her words out. Before she can finish, she’s being pulled out of Nicole’s embrace and the writhing body of her baby niece is being transferred into her arms.
“It’s Auntie Waverly’s turn!” Wynonna grins, as she transfers custody of little Alice over to Waverly, oblivious to the moment that she’s interrupted between the two women who, up until mere seconds ago, had been locked in each other’s arms on a night that seemed destined to continue getting steamier.
All prospects of intimacy of any kind with Nicole have been shattered by the toddler that tries to wriggle out of Waverly’s arms as Waverly adjusts her grip on Alice to a more comfortable position against her side.
“I think it’s about time the wedding night kicked off,” Wynonna tells Waverly, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively. Wynonna’s eyes flit across to where Dolls stands a few feet away, engaged in a polite conversation with a distant Earp uncle, before she adds, “I mean, have you seen how hot he looks in a tux?”
“Go,” Waverly insists, hoping that by hurrying her sister up to the honeymoon suite, she can avoid any further details about the activities that will be taking place inside it tonight. “Enjoy yourself. Alice will be fine with me.”
“You know where I am if there’s an emergency but I swear to god,” Wynonna raises a threatening finger at Waverly and continues in a growl through clenched teeth, “if you disturb me for anything less than my daughter actually dying, then…”
“Wynonna,” Waverly interrupts, using the hand that isn’t supporting Alice to touch her sister’s shoulder in a silent reassurance. “I think you underestimate how unappealing the prospect of interrupting your wedding night is to me. Go and have fun. And for the love of god, please use protection if you don’t want another one of these running around in nine months.”
Wynonna pulls a face, rolling her eyes at Waverly, before disappearing back into the crowd on the dancefloor and taking her husband’s hand as they start to make their goodbyes.
“Hey there, munchkin!” says Waverly, turning her attention to the toddler in her arms. “Are you ready to spend the night with Auntie Wa-wa?”
“Wa-wa?” Nicole asks with a laugh, raising an eyebrow that has Waverly blushing shyly.
“Waverly is a little hard for a fourteen month old to say,” explains Waverly. She looks at Alice, who has her fingers wrapped around a chunk of Waverly’s hair and is trying to bring it to her mouth, then back at Nicole as she says, “I’m so sorry. I’m having such a good time with you, but I agreed to babysit Alice so that Wynonna and Dolls can … you know. It’s probably time for me to get her ready for bed.”
“It’s okay,” nods Nicole. “I understand.”
Waverly can see the disappointment flash across Nicole’s face, but it’s only momentary, because Nicole regains her composure so quickly that Waverly wonders if she even saw it at all. She hopes desperately that her own reluctance to part ways with her new acquaintance is mirrored in Nicole, and with that in mind, she comes up with an idea.
“Unless you want to … I don’t know, would you be interested in helping me babysit?” Waverly asks hopefully, gesturing to her niece. “You can say no, of course, but in that case I’ll have to insist on giving you my number because I’d really like to see you again.”
“I’m really not ready for tonight to end,” admits Nicole, a nervous little smile decorating her pretty lips. “You’re a really special woman, Waverly Earp. And as long as it’s okay with your sister, I’d love to help you look after Alice tonight.”
“I don’t think asking if I can co-babysit with a hot cop ranks high enough on Wynonna’s scale of emergency to warrant disturbing her,” Waverly laughs. “But she’ll be fine with it. You’re an officer of the law, after all! That makes you twice as responsible as the rest of us!”
There’s a twinkle in Nicole’s eye as she replies, “Let’s see about that.”
It takes them a few minutes to gather up their belongings ready to leave the reception, mostly because Alice, perhaps sensing that they are about to leave the party full of people who have been fussing over her and giving her attention all day, chooses that exact moment to throw a bit of a tantrum. Waverly is grateful for Nicole’s presence at her side, as Nicole holds both of their purses in her arms and has Waverly’s discarded heels hooked over two of her fingers, while Waverly concentrates on keeping Alice in a good mood until they can get her into bed.
“Just to be clear,” says Waverly, as they make their way out of the crowded reception room and into the much quieter hotel foyer, towards the elevators that will take them upstairs to Waverly’s room. “I’m not inviting you up for any funny business.”
“Oh god, I know,” Nicole replies hastily, eyes wide at the suggestion. “I never thought that you were…”
“Not that I wouldn’t want to because, well – hello.” Waverly emphasises her point by gesturing down Nicole’s body and hoping that it conveys her point. “If Alice wasn’t in the equation, I’m not sure I’d be able to stop myself, but we can’t. Not with a toddler in the room.”
“Waverly, it’s fine,” assures Nicole, resting her hand on Waverly’s arm as they step into the elevator, before allowing Waverly to press the button for her floor. “I’m not agreeing to help babysit because I think it’ll get me laid, I’m agreeing because I want to spend more time with you.” Nicole attention shifts to Alice, grinning at the toddler as she starts speaking in more of a sing-song voice, “And because you are the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Aren’t you?”
Nicole pulls a series of faces at the toddler in Waverly’s arms and Alice babbles happily in response, waving a chubby fist in Nicole’s direction.
“She seems to like you,” Waverly muses aloud. “Do you spend much time with children? Any nieces or nephews of your own?”
“No,” Nicole shakes her head. “I guess it comes naturally. Well, I’ve been trained to make people feel at ease in tricky situations, and perhaps babies are no different.”
“Hmm,” Waverly agrees. “There is something about you.”
Nicole’s head flicks up and she looks at Waverly, letting out a confused laugh, as she asks, “What do you mean by that?”
“Well,” explains Waverly, “from the moment you joined me at the bar, I felt oddly comforted by your presence, even before I learned that you’re a police officer. You made me feel important, like you really cared about what I had to say. I liked it.”
Before Nicole can respond, the elevator pings and the doors slide open as a tinny female voice speaks through the tannoy system and announces that they have reached Waverly’s floor.
“The key is in my purse,” Waverly says to Nicole, as they stop outside her hotel room.
Nicole fumbles with the catch before delving around inside the small bag and pulling out the little plastic card that will unlock the room. She holds it against the card reader on the door and the light blinks green as the door clicks open, allowing them inside.
Nicole hesitates on the threshold, even after Waverly has carried Alice inside and placed the toddler on the carpeted floor.
“I think I might pop back to my own room for a moment,” says Nicole. When Waverly’s eyes widen in panic, worried that she’s acted rashly by inviting Nicole to help look after Alice after barely knowing each other, Nicole is quick to continue, “Just to get changed into something more comfortable. Then I’ll be right back, I promise.”
Waverly sighs in relief.
“That sounds like a good idea. I need to run Alice a bath anyway.”
By the time Nicole returns, the blue dress that Waverly appreciated so much replaced with grey sweatpants and a baggy police academy t-shirt that Waverly decides looks just as good on the redhead, the bathtub is filled with warm soapy water and Alice is splashing around happily.
Nicole pokes her head around the bathroom door when she returns, greeting Waverly with a smile, before disappearing back into the bedroom. Waverly hears the sound of the other woman flopping down on the bed, before Nicole’s voice calls out from the other room.
“Correct me if I’m being ignorant, but something tells me that Alice isn’t Dolls’ biological daughter.”
“Nope,” answers Waverly with a laugh, as she uses a warm washcloth to wipe at the bubbles covering Alice’s torso, a task that is much harder than it should be because of the way that Alice refuses to sit still. “Alice is the accidental product of a one night stand that Wynonna had with Doc Holliday just before she started seeing Dolls.”
“Doc Hol-?” starts Nicole confusedly. “Wait, wasn’t he the best man?”
“Yeah. It’s complicated. But Alice has two daddies who love her very much.” Waverly wipes at the suds that have made their way to Alice’s cheek, before grinning at her niece and continuing, “Almost as much as Auntie Waverly loves her.”
As if she understands exactly what Waverly is saying, Alice thrashes around happily in the bathwater, sending a few splashes of soapy water over the side of the tub and onto Waverly’s dress. Waverly wishes that she’d had the foresight to change out of her dress and into some pyjamas before giving Alice her bath.
“She’s a very lucky girl,” Nicole says form the bedroom.
“She is,” agrees Waverly.
Getting Alice into bed is a relatively easy task, particularly with two of them there. Waverly gets Alice out of the bath and dries her off with a fluffy hotel-issue towel and changes her into her pyjamas. Nicole is on hand to help with the bedtime story, reading each of the characters with a different voice and even using a couple of Alice’s stuffed animals to help act out the story, and it’s such a shame that Alice, tired from a long day at her mother’s wedding, doesn’t stay awake long enough to listen to the whole story, because Waverly thinks that Nicole’s storytelling is one of the cutest darn things she’s ever seen.
“This is the weirdest first date ever,” Nicole laughs quietly, once Waverly has carried Alice’s sleeping form over to the second bed and tucked her in beneath the soft comforter.
“You mean you haven’t babysat your date’s niece before?” asks Waverly, arching an eyebrow at Nicole as she crosses the room to switch off the main light, leaving the room bathed only in the dim orange glow of the lamp on the nightstand. “At least tonight will be memorable.”
“Tonight was already memorable.”
Waverly blushes, avoiding looking at Nicole by using the excuse of fumbling in her suitcase for a pair of pyjamas.
“You’re such a smooth talker,” she responds shyly.
“Is it working?”
When Waverly glances up, a pair of soft cotton pyjamas clutched in her hands, she finds Nicole looking at her with intrigue, a single eyebrow raised as she waits for an answer to her question.
“Maybe,” Waverly answers, before dashing into the bathroom with her pyjamas to get changed.
Waverly emerges from the bathroom a few minutes later, her faced wiped clean of makeup and her breath minty fresh.
“Wow,” Nicole says from the bed, lifting her gaze from her phone to look at Waverly. “I wish I’d worn something a bit nicer.”
Waverly blushes slightly embarrassed by her attire. The pyjamas are skimpy, just a thin camisole and a pair of cotton shorts that probably show way too much skin to be deemed acceptable, but in Waverly’s defence, she hadn’t known that she would have nocturnal company when she packed her bag for Wynonna’s wedding.
But, if the appreciative expression on Nicole’s face is anything to go by, the lack of coverage her pyjamas offer is not necessarily a bad thing.
Waverly clambers onto her side of the bed, slipping beneath the comforter and feeling a lot less self-conscious about what she is wearing now that most of her body is hidden by the covers.
“Right,” she says, eager to change the topic of conversation. “So where were we before we got interrupted by Wynonna?”
Nicole puts her phone down on the nightstand, and then says confidently, “I believe you were about to kiss me.”
Waverly’s eyes bulge out of her head at Nicole’s words, and she splutters, “What?”
“Oh sorry, my bad,” says Nicole, raising her hand to her face as if she has made a genuine mistake. The only indication that her words are deliberate is the look she shoots Waverly next, eyes dark and lips curling into a seductive smile, before she corrects herself, “I was about to kiss you.”
Waverly’s mouth goes dry. She can’t deny that she was definitely thinking about kissing Nicole when Wynonna so rudely interrupted them during the wedding reception (kissing Nicole, and a whole lot more), but now that she knows Nicole has been thinking about it too, Waverly suddenly loses the ability to function like a normal human. Her brain shuts off, her mouth forgets how to form words, and she can do nothing but stare at Nicole dumbly.
Of course, Waverly already knew that Nicole is attracted to her. Nicole has made no secret of that since the moment she approached Waverly at the bar and introduced herself, and her attentions have been far from unwelcome. But there’s something about hearing Nicole confess outright that she actually wants Waverly, even after their strange adventures into childcare, that leaves Waverly feeling surprised.
“Really?” Waverly manages to choke out.
“Would you be okay with that?”
Waverly suppresses a snort. She doesn’t understand how there can be any doubt in Nicole’s mind about whether she would be okay with being kissed, but she gives Nicole the verbal clarification that she needs regardless.
“I would.”
And then Nicole is leaning in, shifting the position of her body on the bed so that she’s almost sitting on her side, even as she moves her face closer to Waverly’s. One of Nicole’s hands, the one that isn’t propping up most of her bodyweight, rises to cup Waverly’s cheek, her skin soft against Waverly’s, and the touch causes Waverly’s breath to hitch in her throat.
Waverly doesn’t know what to do with her own hand, doesn’t know whether to reciprocate Nicole’s movements or to bury them in Nicole’s short hair or to seek out Nicole’s waist and rest one there, and her indecisiveness means that they remain limp in her own lap.
But soon Waverly has bigger problems, as Nicole’s mouth nears her own and her lungs forget how to work and she finds herself unable to breathe.
The solution to that problem is a simple one. Nicole’s lips touch her own and suddenly oxygen doesn’t matter, not when Nicole’s kiss is providing all the fuel that Waverly needs to live. It’s infinitely softer than Waverly imagined it to be, but there’s something behind the slow press of lips, perhaps a fire waiting to be stoked, that has Waverly’s entire body thrumming with electricity.
Waverly gasps, and one of the hands that she didn’t know what to do with instinctively finds its way to the back of Nicole’s neck, where she tangles the fingers in soft curls and pulls ever so slightly. Nicole gasps, her mouth opening against Waverly’s, and Waverly takes it as an invitation to dart her tongue out, swiping it against Nicole’s lower lip.
Nicole lets out an incoherent noise and the mood of the kiss changes. Her tongue responds in sorts, while the hand on Waverly’s cheek moves down, stroking the column of pale skin before skirting around the outer swell of Waverly’s breast through the thin cotton barrier of Waverly’s pyjamas until it rests on Waverly’s waist. Nicole’s fingers dig in, and her mouth urges Waverly’s on, deepening the kiss as it becomes messier and more insistent.
The hand on Waverly’s waist changes something, the utmost care that Nicole has to not push past any of Waverly’s boundaries when all Waverly wants is for them to be knocked down over and over again, and Waverly feels her entire body humming with need. She kisses Nicole more forcefully, rolling the redhead over until she’s lying flat on her back on the mattress and then taking the opportunity to swing one of her legs over Nicole’s hips until she is straddling her in a messy tangle of limbs and bedsheets. The suddenness of the gesture forces their mouths apart and Waverly takes a moment to appreciate the vision before her, Nicole’s red hair splayed across her pillow, her eyes dark and hazy with arousal, and her lips parted in a silent gasp.
“God, you’re beautiful,” Waverly verbalises her thoughts, brushing loose strands of Nicole’s hair out of the way, before she dives back in for another kiss.
Now that she is familiar with the feeling of Nicole’s mouth on her own, Waverly sets out to explore even more, testing out what Nicole likes and how she responds to each action. They both laugh as the long curtain of Waverly’s hair gets in the way, and Nicole uses one of her hands to sweep it out of the way, then lets out a soft moan as Waverly’s way of thanking her is to take Nicole’s lower lip between her teeth and pull.
The noise stirs something deep within Waverly, a spark of something shooting from deep within her gut right between her legs, and the position that they are currently in, with Waverly’s legs either side of Nicole’s hips, does nothing but heighten her arousal. Nicole’s hands seek out Waverly’s waist, before slipping under the hem of Waverly’s pyjama top and threatening to move higher.
And Waverly wants her to. God, Waverly wants Nicole’s hands on her. Beneath her top, under her shorts, everywhere. The pyjamas that seemed to skimpy earlier are now far too much of a barrier for what Waverly has in mind.
But…
(Oh, why does there have to be a but?)
But little Alice is sleeping only feet away, and Waverly can make no promises to remain quiet if they continue down this path. And Waverly has no intention of having to explain to her sister how the girl, who is spending the night with her Auntie Waverly to avoid this exact scenario, has ended up being scarred for life by the naked romp of an entirely different couple.
“Nicole,” Waverly gasps, pulling away from the kiss with reluctance, though every bone on her body still feels as though it is a blazing inferno.
“I know,” agrees Nicole, her breath laboured as she removes her hands from beneath Waverly’s pyjama top and lets them fall down to her sides. “Alice.”
Her niece’s name is a real mood-killer, but it is exactly what Waverly needs to remind her that this can’t happen.
Not yet, anyway.
“Ugh,” groans Waverly, rolling to the side and lying a respectable distance away from Nicole on the mattress. “You have no idea how much I hate my sister right now. She’s getting some and I’m not, because of her daughter. I knew I should have let Doc take Alice for the night.”
“Hey, it’s fine,” says Nicole, reaching out and tangling the fingers of her hand with Waverly’s. Waverly likes the way that their hands fit together, like two connecting pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. “I’m kind of really hoping that you’ll let me take you out some time.”
“Really?” Waverly asks hopefully. “You’d want that?”
“Of course I would,” nods Nicole. She raises an eyebrow, then adds, “There’s some other things that I want too, but I’m willing to wait for those.”
“How chivalrous,” teases Waverly, before she leans across Nicole’s body to flick the switch on the lamp still glowing on the nightstand. As the room plunges into darkness, Waverly asks, “Cuddle me?”
Nicole obeys wordlessly, diminishing the gap between them on the bed until one of her arms is draped across Waverly’s waist, the other one brushing Waverly’s long hair out of the way of her face.
“I know there’s a stereotype that lesbians move in with each other within about five minutes of dating each other,” Nicole says through the darkness, “but we’ve taken it to a new level. Look at us. Spending a chaste night in bed beside each other while a child in our care sleeps in the same room.”
“There was nothing chaste about the way you kissed me,” Waverly points out with a snort.
“I’m sorry about that.”
“Don’t be. I liked it.”
“Yeah?”
Though the room is dark, Waverly’s eyes are rapidly adjusting to the dark and she can see the way that Nicole is looking at her, like she is a treat waiting to be devoured, and she can feel Nicole’s warm breath on her face, a reminder of the fact that their faces are close enough for their lips to meet again.
“Nicole,” Waverly whines, the voice of reason winning out in her mind as she reminds the redhead of her niece’s presence. “Alice.”
“Right,” agrees Nicole, moving her head so that they are not quite so face to face, though her arm tightens around Waverly’s waist. “Night, Waverly.”
Waverly mumbles a goodnight in response, and it is not long before she drifts off into a peaceful slumber with Nicole’s arms around her.
Waverly is woken by a series of loud raps on the door to her hotel room.
She’s aware of a warm mass behind her, as well as a pair of strong arms around her waist, and the events of the previous night come flooding back, of drinking, of dancing, of struggling to keep her hands to herself despite the gorgeous woman in her bed. Nicole nuzzles sleepily into the back of Waverly’s neck, her arms only tightening around Waverly as the knocking on the door rouses her into consciousness too.
“Babygirl, open this damn door. I want to see my daughter.”
It’s most unlike Wynonna to be awake this early in the morning, particularly after she has presumably been awake for most of the night getting up to god knows what with her new husband, and despite her irritation at having to leave the warm cocoon of Nicole’s arms to let her sister inside, Waverly feels her heart soften at the knowledge that Wynonna’s maternal love is clearly strong enough to justify getting out of bed so early.
“Coming,” mumbles Waverly, carefully extracting herself from Nicole’s embrace and padding across the room to the door, rubbing at her bleary eyes as she goes.
As she flings the door open, Wynonna choose to forgo a greeting, instead pushing her way inside the hotel room and making a beeline for where Alice still sleeps soundly in the other bed.
“Hey there, baby,” Wynonna coos, taking a seat on the edge of the bed, apparently oblivious to the fourth person in the room, as she strokes her fingers through Alice’s wispy hair and gently wakes her daughter up. “Mommy missed you so much last night. Have you been a good girl for Auntie Waverly?”
“She was the best,” Waverly tells Wynonna. “She fell asleep before we finished reading her bedtime story to her.”
“’We’?” queries Wynonna, looking up at Waverly in confusion, before her eyes fall to the tuft of red hair peeking out from under the covers on Waverly’s bed. Her face contorting into an expression of horror as her mind starts to piece together what this means, Wynonna continues, “Oh god, please tell me that you didn’t … not in front of my daughter…”
“No,” confirms Waverly. “We didn’t. You owe me, by the way. Big time. You have no idea how hard it was to keep my hands to myself last night.”
Wynonna grimaces and mimes being sick. Meanwhile, behind Waverly, Nicole begins to stir and lifts her tousled head from the pillow as she blinks blearily at her surroundings.
“Morning,” she says to the two women, her throat husky from sleep in a way that has Waverly clenching her thighs together in a memory of the last time Nicole’s voice sounded like that and, more importantly, why.
“Hi, Nicole,” Wynonna says, her voice uncertain as her eyes flit between the two women. Picking up a whining Alice in her arms, Wynonna nods towards the door, and then says, “Well, I should get going. And then you two can … do whatever it is that lesbians do.”
Wynonna pulls another face and starts gathering Alice’s things up with her free hand, shoving them haphazardly into the overnight bag that she prepared for her daughter’s night away from her.
Waverly tries not to seem too eager to usher her sister out of the room, but there’s really only one thing on her mind. With Nicole, her hair a tousled mess and her eyes groggy from being woken up so abruptly, looking impossibly more attractive than she did last night, Waverly can’t help but want Wynonna and Alice out of the room as soon as possible so that she can have Nicole all to herself.
When Wynonna finally leaves, only after pulling at least half a dozen more faces at the fact that there is a woman in her sister’s bed, Waverly closes the door behind her with a sense of finality, a smile on her face at the fact that she finally has the privacy to do to Nicole what she’s been wanting to do since last night.
“I never did say thank you for helping me to look after Alice,” says Waverly, climbing onto the bed at its foot and crawling up Nicole’s body like a predator stalking her prey, until she is in a position that feels very familiar from last night, with her thighs straddling Nicole’s hips. “Is there any way I can pay you back?”
Nicole’s eyes darken and her mouth turns up into a wicked smile, before she flips their positions suddenly and leans in so that her warm breath tickles Waverly’s face, as she answers, “I’m sure we can come up with something.”

Mariel’s Rome Guide
Our third Italian stop in our 11 day Italy trip was Rome.
At this point, we were two for two on our trip: blown away by our two Italian stops (Venice and Florence), each unique and wonderful in its own way. We felt like we had still more to exploring left to do in Florence, so we were bummed to leave, but we were definitely excited for ROME! The capital of Italy and a major history hub.
Statute of Julius Caesar.
TRANSPORTATION
We took TrenItalia from Firenze S.M. Novella to Roma Termini. The entire train ride was about 1 hour and thirty minutes, so even shorter than the train ride from Venice to Florence, and again, the ride was wonderful. We had prosecco and snacks and watched part of another Italian based movie: Eat Pray Love. It was lovely.
Once at Rome’s train station, we took a cab to our hotel. And then, while in Rome, which was only 2 days total, we did a lot of walking to get from one point to the other and took a few cab rides when the distances were too far away (like from our hotel to the meeting place of full day tour of Rome we took).
Hotel
We stayed at Hotel Indigo Rome – St. George, a 5-star hotel.
The first thing I noticed when we walked in to our hotel, was the smell. It smelled like a spa; clean, welcoming, soothing and captivating.
The place was a bit dark and cold feeling, but as soon as you talked to the people at the front desk, you realized the place was actually warm. The staff was really friendly and nice, and did what they could to make you feel at home. They took us to our room, and it was a bit on the small side (like most spaces in Europe), but every bit elegant and first class. A very comfortable room, and the beds were glorious.
The hotel is known for their spa, so the room amenities (like bathroom soaps and shampoos) smelled great and felt really nice.
The hotel had a tiny gym, which we used one of the mornings; we took with us some exercise bands we had brought from home, and used their limited equipment to supplement those for our workout. The small gym did the trick! We were able to get a good workout in and it felt great.
The hotel offered a breakfast buffet, which was not included with our hotel rate, but we went for it anyway because of convenience. To our surprise, it was delicious.
Breakfast at Hotel Indigo Rome – St. George. My husband’s favorite Italian breakfast.
I must say, Europeans really know how to do breakfast buffets at hotels. Every hotel we had been to, including this one, had amazing breakfast buffets. So many options, so fresh, so filling. And the coffee was great!
Hotel Indigo was well located. This allowed for a quick cab ride to wherever we needed to go: dinner, tours, etc.
View as we were walking on one of the streets in Rome.
Sights
Just like in Venice and Florence, we did quite a bit of walking in Rome. We didn’t have as much time in Rome as we did in Venice and Florence, but we packed our days with tours and sightseeing, so we can see and experience as much as possible of what Rome had to offer.
The night we got there we went out to dinner, and once we came back to our room, we re-read the Rome part of our Best of Italy by Rick Steve book, to remind ourselves of the top places we knew we wanted to visit. This was important, as it allowed us to jump on a computer, and look for the Rome tour that best suited our needs. We booked the tour online for the next day. This tour was a really long tour (7.5 hours) and very comprehensive, showing us as much as possible of Rome all in one day.
The tour was called: Walks of Italy – Rome in a Day.
Our tour guide was really great. He was funny and seemed like he loved the American culture, so we felt really welcome and comfortable. He was also really knowledgeable and kept us all on schedule, which is hard to do, considering there was so much to see and explain.
The tour also came with free entrances to all sights (and no waiting in line!), a free gelato tasting (yum!), transportation from one place to the next when the sights were too far from each other, and a 1 hour and 15 min lunch break.
What we visited (with the tour):
Colosseum
This 2,000 year-old-stadium is one of Rome’s (and Europe’s) most recognizable landmarks. It was built at the peak of the Roman empire, around A.D. 80, for public spectacles and gladiator contests. The Romans built this 150 feet high amphitheater, so they could share the “fun sport” with as many people possible.
Inside the Colosseum.
Since the Romans were better engineers than artists, the building was more functional than beautiful, and even though its essential structure is Roman, you can find a lot of Greek influence in the facade (columns). Only a third of the original Colosseum remains, as an earthquake destroyed some of it and most was crated off to build other buildings during the Renaissance.
It’s a monumental sight, and it’s something I recommend everyone visit at least once. If you go in the summer, like we did, be prepared to sweat; make sure you bring a large bottle of water with you and a hat to keep the sun off your eyes.
View of Arch of Constantine
This arch stands between the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, and it is free and always open. This beautiful sight to see, which is very well preserved, commemorates the acceptance of Christianity by the Roman empire.
View of Arch of Constantine.
Emperor Constantine had a vision he would win under the sing of the cross; then, Constantine actually defeated his rival Maxentious in AD. 312 to become to sole emperor of the Roman empire, and legalized Christianity soon after.
View of Roman Forum
We didn’t actually tour around within the Roman Forum, but we got to take a good look at it (from a few different angles) from the outside. The Roman Forum is probably one of the most (if not the most) important pieces of real estate in the whole Western civilization, as a lot of important decisions and events took place here. It is ancient Rome’s birthplace and civic center, and the common ground in between Rome’s famous seven hills.
View of the Roman Forum.
Inside it, you can find: the Arch of Titus, the Forum’s Main Square, the Temple of Antoninus Pious & Faustina, the Temple of Castor & Pollux, the temple of Saturn, the Temple of Julius Caesar, among others.
Trevi Fountain Make a wish! This fountain is just dreamy. Just like you picture it would be; and it is way more majestic than the replica you see in Las Vegas (we go to Vegas a lot, hence my point of reference haha).
At the Trevi Fountain.
We were given about 10 minutes, by our tour guide, to stay here and enjoy it. We took pictures, threw a coin in to make a wish and enjoyed the atmosphere. A must see!
Vatican Museums
Oh man, this place. It has it’s own air, I swear. As soon as you walk in the Vatican City, you feel different. Probably because you’re walking on the world’s smallest county (with its own postal system, armed guards, helipad, mini train station and radio station) and one of the world’s holiest places. Among many sights within the Vatican City, you’ll find St. Peter’s Basilica and Vatican Museums, which are the two that we visited.
About to go in the Vatican Museums.
Inside the Vatican Museums.
The Vatican Museums contain four miles of displays, making it Europe’s top three or four houses of art. There is so much to see, and I would definitely recommend a guide to help you see  the most important pieces and explain what they are to you. Plus, a guided tour will allow you to skip the lines, getting you right in!
View from the outside of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Pantheon
This dome temple was built two millennia ago (yes, two millennia!) and it was probably one of the most influential art buildings. It served as a model for the Florence cathedral dome (which launched the Renaissance) and for St. Peter’s (which capped the Renaissance off). Roman engineering can be appreciated here as well, as it’s circular design is mathematically perfect.
Looking up inside the Pantheon.
Inside the Pantheon.
Inside you can find decorative statues and many famous people’s tombs, like Raphael’s for example. It is a gorgeous temple, made with beautiful material. Make sure you’re covering your shoulders and knees, as otherwise you will not be allowed in.
Sistine Chapel
This was one of our highlights in Rome. We entered it after our tour through the Vatican Museums, and we were wow’ed. So majestic and impressive. Before going in, our tour guide gave us a quick lesson (with charts and cheat-sheets, so awesome) so that we could be prepared to observe it all and know the history behind it. Also, tip: you can’t really speak once inside, you have to be super quiet, so learn prior and then observe away! Did you know the Sistine Chapel is the Pope’s personal chapel and where a new Pope is elected?
We could not take pictures inside the Sistine Chapel, but this is sort of the color scheme you’d find on the ceiling. Only way more grandiose!
St. Peter’s Basilica
After the Sistine Chapel, we visited St. Peter’s Basilica. There’s a handy shortcut from the Sistine Chapel directly to the Basilica, which saves you a good 30 minutes of walking; the shortcut is exclusive for authorized guides and tour groups, so if you take the tour we did through Walks of Italy, this will apply to you too! St. Peter’s Basilica is the richest and grandest church on Earth; that just says it all. It’s a beauty to behold, inside and out.
Inside St. Peter’s Basilica.
IMPORTANT: All of the sights mentioned above were experienced via a tour. It was an amazing tour, and I highly recommend you take it. makes your sightseeing so much smoother and you learn a lot more.
Eats
The food in Rome is somewhat similar to the food we experienced in Florence. At least in the sense that it is in-land, so it offers a lot of steaks and heavier dishes than in coastal areas. You’ll find delicious bruschettas, prosciutto e melone, fried snacks and spaghetti a la carbonara. Also, a ton of delicious gelato options.
Preston enjoying a Nutella calzone.
In general, Roman food is pretty homestyle; food didn’t come out from emperor’s and people’s kitchens, it came out of commoners’ kitchens. Therefore a lot of the food is simple, fresh and seasonal. Which explains why there’s a fondness for tripe, brain and pigs’ feet (note: I did not eat this, as I am not fond of organs nor feet haha).
We were only on Rome for two nights, so we did not get a lot of time to explore the food scene too much. However, below you’ll find a list of the few restaurants we really enjoyed and would recommend for you to go!
Our favorite Rome restaurants:
Enoteca “Cul de Sac” – wine shop / lunch. This place was recommended to us by our tour guide; he told us that he personally goes over there whenever he’s feeling like enjoying good wine and good apps to go along with his wine. We trusted him and went in. It was great! They had a very large wine list and delicious food. The service was super friendly and we felt very welcome. Their baba ghanoush and cheese boards were both fantastic! Definitely recommend this place.
Dar Poeta – pizza and dessert. This place was recommended by my sister, and she told us we could not leave Rome without stopping there, so we did. And we were SO GLAD we did. They are famous for their pizza and calzones, so we ordered a pizza to share (the crust so good, and the ingredients so fresh!) and a Nutella calzone (which was to die for!). Very affordable wine as well.
Nutella calzone at Dar Poeta.
Gelato di Roma – gelateria. Best gelato in town, recommended by our tour guide. They have a ton of delicious flavors, so you have a lot to chose from. They offer different kinds of desserts and sweets too, so if you’re feeling like you’re all gelato-ed out and in need something different, this place has got you covered.
Roman candy at Gelato di Roma.
Rome was everything we thought it would be: influential, traditional, old, inspiring, beautiful…delicious. Even though it’s the capital of Italy, it was not as busy and intense as I’ve seen other capitals to be. It was very pleasant and tranquil, and the people were very kind and willing. I identified myself a lot with this city, since I grew up in a capital city too (Quito), and it reminded me a lot of the environment and pace I was used to in Ecuador.
The oldness of it sort of felt soothing to the soul. I’m telling you, Rome is a must.
Be sure to check out where we went next: Positano!

Boyfriend got into accident with my car..he has insurance/SR-22. Whose insurance will be responsible?
My boyfriend has had an insurance policy with an SR-22 on it for almost a year. It expires in 6 days. He was driving my car to work and got into an accident that was his fault. My car has barely any damage and I don't think the other car was severely damaged. My mom has an insurance policy on my car ( I live with her) But since my boyfriend was driving and he has insurance with the SR-22 doesn't that mean that it will go on his insurance? So I called the owner of the broker company who told me that he would gladly backdate the policy upon the notion that AIG would accept it and they said that they would. How do doctors actually pay for liability insurance?
On studentdoc.com, the salary survey stated that the average OB/GYN made roughly $238000 a year, but some sites I have looked at show that they also pay $50000 a year (in florida, that rises to $100000) for malpractice insurance. Even for other practices, such as pediatrics and internal medicine, the rate is usually $30000+. This is a huge amount of money and really, after paying student loans, mortgages, taxes, and etc, how much money do doctors actually take home? Surely not all doctors actually pay for their premiums. Specifically, how much would a pediatric surgeon pay in malpractice insurance in California or Illinois? Just some food for thought.""
I hit my son's car! (Insurance question)?
I accidently hit my son's car in the driveway. We have seperate insurance policies, but use the same agent. At first the agent told me my son's policy would cover the accident and pay for my son's car but I would have to pay for my deductible. Fine, sounded fair...and I was told don't file a police report. Now I have been given several different excuses as to why my son's car cannot be fixed. First I was told I own his car. Not true!! and we have different insrurance policies, then I was told we have the same policy..WE DO NOT! Then I was told you can't collect if the person is a relative at your residence. What is going on! This is a WELL KNOWN insurance company and we are shelling out big bucks for these policies. Any insight or advice.""

Will getting married affect me being on my parents car insurance?
My mom knows we are engaged my dad won't even know that until December. My husband and I just got married yesterday but our ceremony is not until August. I realized today I am on my parents car insurance. Am I still going to be on there or are they going to send a letter to them saying I am married or something? He already paid the premium until April 2012 with me on it so I don't think they can take me off til then? Maybe at the end of the 6 months I should tell them since I am getting married in 4 months I want to get my own car insurance since it wont be the full cycle done before I am married. IDK I just wanna know if the company will say your married daughter cannot be on your insurance??? I am kinda freaked out.
Need insurance for mercedes car - which insurer will use mercedes repair centre?
I'm buying a Mercedes B class. Swinton have given me some good insurance quotes but during the long conversation (with Aviva) to get 7 day drive-away insurance I was told to be careful of the small print: to keep the Mobilo service I must always use Merc-approved garages for servicing and repairs; unfortunately Swinton's insurers say they will choose where the car goes and this is very unlikely to be a Merc garage. So my question is: what do Merc owners do? From whom do you get your car insurance to make sure any repairs are carried out by a Merc-approved repair centre?

How does motorcycle insurance work?
So I just wanted to know a little about the pay brackets with motorcycle. Im not talking specific numbers cause I know to just get a quota for that. What I heard is for things like scooters or bikes under 150cc there is a bracket. Then it goes up for anything between 150cc to less than 400cc. Then after that you can expect insurance to go up more when you get into the 600cc supersports and so on. I know im wording this kind of poorly. It makes sense just like how insurance for a Ferrari is going to more than a pickup truck or economy car. I just remember someone saying on a forum that they got a ninja 400r and they were happy that its technically a 399cc engine bucause if it was just a bit more the insurance would have gone up to the next class in motorcycle insurance. I just wanted to know if someone can help explain how this works. I wouldnt mind having something stronger than a 250 or 300 motorcycle but if it means that insurance is going to double or something for a 600 or 650 then I may stray away from it because I still have insurance for my car. Also on a side note how exactly does super sport insurance typically compare to standard bikes? For example maybe a gsxr 600 or CBR 600 vs something like a SV650. Both have similarly sized engines but Im sure 600 super sports are more aggressively tuned and other factors. Lastly my one friend had a Kawasaki. I cant remember what kind but it may have been like a 2002 ninja 600? Anyways his monthly insurance was like less then $20 a month! Does anyone know what kind of coverage he may have had. When he crashed it, insurance paid for the damages to the car he hit and for himself. The bike however, was not covered at all. Is this a real thing or am I remembering it wrong? Sorry about the book! I was just curious. Thank you everyone for the help!""

Car insurance situation.....?
one of our cars', 93 Toyota Tercel just got totalled out in a fender bender that was caused by another driver. since we only have collision insurance with AmFam on it, the other woman's company made the pay out to us (~$2K) and let us keep the car. we decided to fix the car up mechanically, and give it a bit of a face lift on the mangled front side fender, but didnt really put too much money into it. so the question is.... as we continue to drive the car, and G*d Forbid, anything similar should happen again, when we are not at fault and there's no bodily damage, just car damage, would we be able to get the other insurance company to pay for the car repairs? or will they say, well, you already had it totalled out once, we're not gotta give you $ to fix a car that not worth much... or how does this work? anyone have any experience with this? anyone here an insurance adjuster? thanks in advance""

20 Fantasy Hockey Thoughts
Here every Sunday until the start of the 2018-19 regular season, we'll share 20 Fantasy Thoughts from our writers at DobberHockey. These thoughts are curated from the past week's "Daily Ramblings".
Writers: Michael Clifford, Ian Gooding, Cam Robinson, and Dobber
  1. Here’s the thing with Artemi Panarin’s 82-point season: nothing was really out of line percentage-wise: His overall shooting percentage in 2017-18 (11.8 percent) was lower than his first two seasons (over 15 percent), his on-ice shooting percentage at five-on-five (his team’s scoring rate) was 7.54 percent and that’s completely normal, and his individual points percentage was a career-high, but it’s not surprising he’s in on more goals when he’s the primary offensive playmaker instead of playing with Patrick Kane.
When you consider how much the Columbus power play struggled this year, maybe Panarin can even improve on the 21 PP points he had and surpass the 82 points? As long as the ice time stays consistent to this year’s, I think a point-per-game player sounds right.
  2. Yanni Gourde’s average draft position (ADP) should be fascinating next season. He’s a good player who has earned his middle-six role with the Lightning. There’s no doubt about that. But his percentages, both personally and the team’s on-ice, were both pretty high. I’m not buying he maintains a 25-goal, 60-point pace next year. Will he go in the first 10 rounds (120 picks)? We’ll see. I don’t think it’ll be enough of a discount to warrant drafting him.
  3. What a monster. Dustin Byfuglien has a history of ramping up his game in the playoffs from his time in Chicago and it sure looks like we’ll be seeing that dominant player much more frequently this spring.
Big Buff’s regular season was somewhat disappointing by his lofty standards – thanks in part to some injury issues, but he still played at a 53-point pace and plugged the peripheral categories with aplomb. Byfuglien will be 34 this month and that may scare some people away from him in fantasy hockey drafts next season but there still appears to be some gas in the tank.
  4. The 2017-18 season was a disaster for most Rangers skaters but it was a solid second campaign from Jimmy Vesey. He had 28 points. Not exactly great. But he did manage 17 goals, one more than his rookie year, and did so with a shooting percentage drop.
The 24-year-old winger progressed in a lot of ways from his first to his second season. His goal rate went up, his expected goal rate went up, his shot rate went up, his primary point rate went up, and for good measure, he improved his penalty differential.
All told, Vesey had a pretty good year. His role is yet to be determined for next season and he’s a RFA to boot, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
  5. Without knowing who his linemates will be, it’s hard to project what Arizona sophomore Christian Dvorak can do fantasy hockey-wise next season. Assuming Derek Stepan and Clayton Keller stick together, and Dylan Strome remains at center, there may not be much for Dvorak to play with next season. Playing a third-line role for a (likely) low-scoring team doesn’t bode well. For now, his only appeal is in deeper leagues.
  6. Tomas Hertl and Joe Thornton both need new contracts next year but I’d be surprised if the Sharks don’t try to figure out how to keep Evander Kane around and stay under the cap. He’s looked very good since the trade and seems to have great chemistry with Joe Pavelski. With his stout shots, hits, and PIM totals, and playing with elite players on an elite power-play unit, things would be shaping up for a career year. Hopefully his ADP doesn’t climb too much.
  7. It was a very up-and-down season for the Flames’ 21-year-old Sam Bennett. He started the year with zero points in his first 15 games, went on a tear in the middle of the year that saw 13 points in 14 games from November 28th through December 28th, and registered one point over the final four weeks of the season. Even in leagues that count hits, that kind of inconsistent production made it hard to rely on him in fantasy.
Bennett led the Flames in expected goals per 60 minutes. His mark of 0.92 was also top-25 league-wide among forwards with at least 500 minutes played. His problem was his shooting percentage, managing just over 7 percent at five-on-five after being close to 10 percent over his first two seasons.
Here’s the interesting thing: he barely shot while on the ice on the power play. Among the league’s 214 forwards with at least 100 minutes of power play time, he was 209th in individual shot attempts per 60 minutes. The only players who shot less often were Nick Foligno, David Desharnais, Travis Zajac, and Zack Smith. Not only did Bennett underperform his expected goals at five-on-five by a pretty significant margin, but there was no chance he’d make up the difference on the power play shooting as little as he did.
The 2018-19 campaign will be his fourth, and you know we love our fourth-year breakouts here. He’ll have a hard time being consistently productive in leagues that don’t count hits as he’ll likely be third line/second power-play unit, but don’t sleep on him in deeper leagues. A jump in shot rates on the PP could help get him close to 20 goals and 40 points.
  8. Obviously, Jesse Puljujarvi’s 12 goals and 20 points in 65 games aren’t enough for fantasy hockey. It’s hard to put up a big fantasy season with 13:22 in ice time per game, though. He also played just 12:21 over his final 30 games of the season. No one is going to produce being used as a fourth liner.
Was Puljujarvi a consistent presence game in and game out? No, but very few Oilers were. The fact the club cut down on his ice time as they were playing themselves out of the playoffs is lunacy. They should have been giving him 16-17 minutes a night to try to build him up for 2018-19.
Next season will be Puljujarvi’s third. Edmonton doesn’t have a better scoring winger on the roster (assuming you consider Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins centers and not wingers). His shot-share numbers were good, his production rates were good, and his shot rates were good. My bet is they go looking for a scoring winger this offseason (LOL) and that worries me for Puljujarvi’s usage next year. He’s good. He can probably be very good. You wouldn’t know it the way the Oilers treat him, though.
  9. The news came out that Blues’ Vladimir Tarasenko will be out 4-6 months recovering from shoulder surgery. That is, uh, pretty bad. Four months would leave him a month until training camp. Six months would have him return sometime after the regular season has started.
A couple of weeks ago, I mused that Tarasenko’s ADP would probably fall from where it was in 2017-18 and that I would be a buyer. Now, I’m not so sure. He’s clearly an elite talent and going into his age-27 season, I wouldn’t expect much in the way of a decline in skills. But I loathe drafting players coming off serious injuries like this. Injuries which don’t let players have a regular offseason. I suppose a shoulder surgery is better than a knee or a hip surgery but it’s no small issue all the same.
  10. When looking at right-wingers, its expected you can lock Nikita Kucherov, Patrik Laine, Phil Kessel, Patrick Kane and Blake Wheeler ahead of Tarasenko, and then you’re left with options such as David Pastrnak, Jakub Voracek and William Nylander in that next tier. If you can nab Tarasenko as the eighth or even ninth RW off the board, you take that swing all day.
Expect a slow start due to such a lengthy period of inactivity this summer but watch him come on strong to finish next year. Tarasenko is a player to target at the right spot or wait to pounce on in a trade mid-season from a frustrated owner.
  11. Jet’s Patrik Laine is a guy whose ADP should be fascinating next year. Can he go in the first round? He’s probably already one of the top-3 goal scorers in the league and he’ll only be in his age-20 season. He was a second-round pick last season in most fantasy leagues. He’ll definitely find his way into the first round, right?
  12. One goalie situation that should be a timeshare next season: the Florida Panthers. Roberto Luongo has confirmed that will be back for his 19th NHL season. If you think that the 39-year-old Luongo is too old to be a starter anymore, consider that his ratios (2.47 GAA, .929 SV%) were significantly better than those of James Reimer (2.99 GAA, .913 SV%). Contract-wise, Luongo still four more years at $4.53 million, while Reimer has three more years at $3.4 million.
  13. In spite of their struggles, Braden Holtby and Cory Schneider are likely to be back as their teams’ starters next season. But like Carey Price, fantasy hockey owners won’t have nearly the amount of faith that they had entering the 2017-18 season. Of the three, I’m still tempted to rank Price the highest because he has the strongest foothold on his team’s starting job, even though his team is in the worst shape of the three. Right now, anyway. Maybe I rethink that over the summer; after all, I am allowed to change my mind because I don’t need to make this kind of decision until September. Fantasy rankings are not a stationary object.
  14. A lot has happened this past season that no one in their right minds would have believed. The Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche making the playoffs. Claude Giroux reaching 100 points. Nathan MacKinnon reaching 95 points. William Karlsson scoring 40 goals. Carey Price with a goals-against average of over 3.00. Not even the fearless forecaster would have predicted those ones!
  15. In terms of truly unexpected happenings from the start of the season until now, where would Philipp Grubauer and Keith Kinkaid starting Game 1 of the playoffs for their the Capitals and Devils, respectively? Each team is starting the goalie that has played better this season.
Kinkaid has one more season under contract after this one, so I could also see the Devils trying to make it work with a pure tandem while he’s under contract (alongside Schneider), but the Capitals will have a decision to make in the offseason with Grubauer, who will be an RFA. The Capitals are right up against the cap, so trading Grubauer and sticking with Holtby for the final two years of his contract might be an option that they are forced to strongly consider.
Factor in the John Carlson potential-UFA situation and it’s really hard to know what the Capitals will do with Grubauer. So we’d really have to wait until the end of the playoffs and the offseason to know where to project Holtby’s value for next season.
  16. Ilya Kovalchuk has expressly made his desire to return to the NHL previously known, so it’s a matter of where he lands, not if he leaves the KHL. A lot of people are going to project how many points they see Kovalchuk racking up and I just don’t know how to go about it.
Here is a guy who left the NHL in his age-29 season and who just turned 35. Since the 2013 lockout, only one player aged 35 or older has managed at least 70 points (Joe Thornton, 2015-16 with 82). The highest-scoring winger was Martin St. Louis with 69 in 2013-14. Keep in mind that St. Louis did that playing nearly 21 minutes a night. Wherever Kovalchuk signs, there’s no chance he plays 21 minutes a night. We have to remember that over his final two seasons, Kovalchuk was playing over 24 minutes a game in order to be a point-per-game player. No team is going to give him anywhere close to that. He won’t be over 20 minutes a game, for that matter.
I love Kovalchuk as a player, and I’m getting excited to watch him again in the NHL, but we should feel fortunate if he can get 17-18 minutes a night. At that level, I’d be hard-pressed to project him for more than 60 points. We have all offseason to figure this out but that seems about right for now.
  17. Down in the AHL, Chris Terry won the scoring title with 70 points in 60 games. He also led with 32 goals. The highest scoring rookie was Winnipeg’s Mason Appleton, with 63 in 73 games. Pittsburgh prospect Daniel Sprong was next with 61 in 62. Rookie defenseman Sami Niku (also a Winnipeg prospect –damn!), had 53 points in 73 games. Sprong should crack the Penguins next year, though I’m thinking closer to December before he makes the jump for good. The other two are a year away. And I only say that because the Jets are so deep and can afford to let them simmer.
Between the pipes, Garret Sparks led the way with 1.81 and 0.936 numbers. But much of that is the product of coaching and coaching style. Compare it to the other Marlies goalie Calvin Pickard – 2.25 and 0.920. Not as stellar, but still very good (Top 6 in the league). Now let’s look at another example in San Antonio: Ville Husso is a quality goaltending prospect who went 15-13-5, 2.32 and 0.926. Very stellar numbers despite the modest win total. And it becomes more impressive because the other goalie on the same team – Spencer Martin – was 14-15-4 (similar record), but 3.10 and 0.893. That’s huge. And that’s how we can surmise that one goaltender is quite better than the other and that it’s not the coaching style and defensive team beefing up the numbers. In fact, they probably drag Husso’s numbers down if anything. If I’m in a keeper league, I’m taking a real close look at getting my hands on Husso. Not only because of his success this season but also because of Jake Allen’s failure. If Allen implodes again, then Husso will come and take that job by next February.
While I’m on the subject, Cal Petersen (23-11-2, 2.30 and .918) looks like  the heir-apparent to Jonathan Quick. He’s another good one to tuck away in case Quick has another one of his ‘hurt-all-season’ seasons.
  18. Frank Vatrano has eight points in 16 games since becoming a Panther but he collected four of those points in the final three games of the season. He’s injury prone but if he can stay healthy, he can provide a secondary scoring option for the Panthers – likely third line, second PP unit next year.
  19. Jonathan Quick just won the William Jennings Trophy and as a Quick owner in one league I’ll be shopping the hell out of him this summer. Besides the fact that Quick gets hurt – seriously hurt – a little too often for my taste, but I just don’t believe in the Kings. Were it not for a career season out of Anze Kopitar, they wouldn’t be anywhere near the playoffs.
  20. It was a rare, under-the-radar post-trade-deadline move on March 21, but Edmonton may have landed themselves a good one when they acquired forward Cooper Marody from Philadelphia for a third-round draft pick.
The former sixth-round pick is 21 years old and has dominated college hockey for the University of Michigan. His transition to the NHL, points-wise, should be similar to that of Drake Caggiula. Marody currently sits 144 on our Fantasy Prospects List but moves up closer to the Top 100 with this trade and the news that the Oilers signed him to an ELC.
  Have a good week, folks!!

How much would insurance cost?
I'm 19 and just passed got my driving license. I live in Yorkshire (I think that me living in Yorkshire reduces the cost of insurance a bit). How much would annual insurance cost for something like a Mazda Rx-8 (2000-2006). Also if possible how much would it cost for a Volkswagen Golf GTi or a BMW E series. I know I havent given much information about which cars but let's just say a car priced between 2000-4000. Also if I do the Pass Plus course how much would that reduce it by? I just need an estimate by the way to get an idea of the prices. By the way I am a first time drive and male. Thankyou
Why are car insurance companies trying to make me go bankrupt?
Okay, this is extremely frustrating. I'm a 19 year old student, who works part time. I have all-state insurance full coverage, and I drive a 2001 toyota tacoma, which is paid off. And guess how much Allstate charges me every 6 months? $750!!!!!!!!!!!! That is absolutely ridiculous. These son of a bitches are totally ridiculous charging me that. I've never had a ticket, never been in an accident. And I don't care if i'm 19 that price is absolutely absurd for that car. I'm almost at the point where I just wanna go illegal and drive without insurance. Can a health insurance company decline your request to cancel?
Here's the situation: I've had health insurance for the past few years through Nationwide, which is/was provided by my employer. The cost is taken out of my check every week. I received a letter from my employer last December stating that I did not have to change anything in regards to the Affordable Health Care Act. Two months later, I received a letter from my insurance company saying that I have inadequate coverage and need to visit healthcare.gov to find different coverage. I found new coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield through healthcare.gov (I was planning on going BCBS anyway). I asked the woman who I spoke with when I should cancel my previous insurance benefits. She replied Wait a couple of weeks until you get all of your new information from BCBS . Here's where the issue comes in. When I contacted Nationwide (my previous insurance company) to cancel they said I had to fill out and send back a form. Basically, the form asked why I was cancelling. Go figure there was no option for them not having the correct benefits. Anyway, I sent that back and proof of my new policy (they wanted the effective date) Nationwide DENIED my request to cancel stating that I only had 30 days from the time my new coverage began to inform them. Even though their coverage doesn't meet the AHCA requirements, I cannot cancel until my company's open enrollment (December) Can they legally decline my cancellation request?""

Car insurance with teenagers.?
My mom and I have been checking around for cars to buy because I have a scholarship and one college class right now, and I need the transportation so that I can go to study sessions for the college class, and to the meetings for my scholarship. We really don't have a lot of money. I work but only on Saturday because of school. My mom has Progressive right now and she checked how much it would be to have me and a new car on the insurance and it is a whopping $500 a month (her, her truck, me, and my car included).. We need an insurance company that isn't going to cost us a 1/4 of our income. At first we were looking at older cars under $2500. Then my mom was thinking it would be better to get me a new car with good gas mileage so she wouldn't have to worry about me being safe and not breaking down on the side of the road... But we can afford a new car, not with our down payment. The monthly payments are too high. So now we are going back to the older cars, and if we have a fully paid for vehicle, I am sure the insurance won't be as high. But here it, I am 16 years old, took driver's ed and have an insurance waiver that is supposed to bring the insurance down 10%. I also have good grades, a scholarship, a job, etc.. These things should look good to the insurance and bring the cost down.. I am safe driver as well.. Not driving far daily at all. Basically back and forth from school and to those meetings and study sessions every now and then. Any suggestions as to what car to look for and what insurace company we should go with? Thanks, in advance.""

Question About Car Insurance/Learner's Permit?
Okay, I am a 23 (soon to be 24) year old male, I have never had a license or a car, and just recently I received my permit through the DMV, I have not driven too many times on this permit, but I am about to purchase a used car from a friend of mine and get the title and everything I need transferred over to my name. I have yet to achieve my license and am still driving on my permit to get accustomed and comfortable behind the wheel before I take the driver's test with a worker at the DMV. My question is this tho, I live at home atm, and my family all has cars/car insurance. And I am not on any of their plans yet nor do I have my own coverage. I am new to this whole scene and such, and I wanted to know with me purchasing a used car from a friend with title and all and this car being in my name, seeing as I am not a licensed vehicle owner yet, and only have my permit, I cannot as far as I know apply for insurance until I achieve my license, so I wanted to ask will my family simply be able to add me/my car to their plan until I get my license? Or how will this work? As I stated I am totally new, but when its done I will have a paid for in full car (my first) all the titles and information transferred to me in my name, and the only thing I am missing is insurance and I am wondering how this will work seeing as I am over 21, have a permit and have my own car? Hi, I'm 17 years old and looking to get a motorcycle. I have good grades and will only drive a motorcycle when the conditions are right. Like weather, cars on the road Sat. I can't find any used or cheap ninja 250's around my area and I think I would rather go stright to the dealer rather then the seller because of too much red tape and work. Will this effect my car insurance?
(btw if this makes any difference whatsoever, I live in the UK) So I'm soon to be a new driver and insurance for new drivers at the moment is really expensive! I'm aware of that! But my question was this: basically I'm looking to buy my first car, but the car I'm looking to buy was involved in an accident with not the current owner, but the owner before that! And I don't quite fully understand this but the accident was apparently a 'Category D' accident? So what I was wondering was, as this car has been in an accident, (but is now repaired) even though it wasn't me who had the accident, will this effect the price of my car insurance, as the car I will be driving will have been involved in an accident before, but not involving myself? Thanks guys :) xx""
How much (on average) does it cost to get insured?
I have been doing side cleaning for some friends and family so of course I'm not insured or bonded. But I can make anywhere from $50-$80 for less then 2 hours of work. I started working PT at a cleaning company so that I could get more experience (and a little more pay) and learn a bit about the business. Of course what I'm learning is that instead of making the full $50-$80 for my services I'm making only 20% and the rest of course goes to the company! I feel I can do much better on my own and really want to work towards that so I know my best bet is to get insurance and bonding. Roughly what is the premium for it? I guess I wouldn't need to be insured for no more then $25,000 -$50,000. And are bonding and insurance liability fees seperate?? Any help would be appreciated. thanks""

Since the news broke last Thursday that the San Antonio Stars were being sold and relocating, fans of the team, and of the league in general, have taken to social media to voice their concerns about sale of the franchise.
Die-hard Stars fans have been the most vocal, expressing a myriad of emotions from sadness to outright anger that Spurs Sports and Entertainment (SS&E), the parent company of the Stars, have been in negotiations to sell the franchise. If the team relocates to Las Vegas, as rumored, it will be the third city for the Stars. The franchise started out in Salt Lake City as the Utah Starzz in 1997. In December 2002, the league announced that the Starzz would be moving to San Antonio.
Some fans have backed the Stars even before the team played its first game at AT&T Center in 2003. They shelled out money for season-ticket deposits to help secure the team for SS&E.
During the Stars’ first four years in San Antonio, the team experienced losing seasons before earning a 20-14 record in 2007 under former head coach Dan Hughes. The following season the Stars had their best year, earning a trip to the WNBA Finals before losing in a sweep to the Detroit Shock.
Hughes left the team after the 2016 season, capping a four-year stretch of losing seasons. The team ended the 2017 season with an 8-26 record, at the bottom of the league under first-year head coach and former Stars player Vickie Johnson.
Four fans took some time over the weekend to share their opinions with Hoopfeed.com about the relocation of the team. Their responses to questions about the team are below.
Suzanne Kenoyer – A “fan of the WNBA since the beginning of the league and a season ticket-holder since the Stars came to San Antonio.”
Jackie Freeman – A Stars fan “since day one. Went to the unveiling of the San Antonio Silver Stars uniform and new name.” She was introduced to the league when she attended a Houston Comets game soon after Sheryl Swoopes returned after giving birth. “I still have my program and poster. It was the best.”
Jeanne Chew – A “WNBA fan since its inception and a 15-year season ticket-holder for the Stars.”
Cathleen Coyle – A “WNBA fan since the league started. Living in San Antonio, I rooted for the Comets, but being from Jersey, I was a huge Liberty fan. They had T-Spoon! I have been a Stars fan since I knew they were relocating here from Utah. I was one of a group of folks dropping the $50.00 deposit to get the team here.”
Are you surprised that the team is moving? Why or why not?
Suzanne: Somewhat surprised because nothing was rumored, but as I look back – Hughes stepping down, only a one-year contract for [Vickie Johnson], not being billed for our season ticket renewals – maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. It’s no secret that SS&E has done little to attract or retain new season ticket-holders over the years, and we’ve often felt that the team was an afterthought. Knowing that SS&E acquired a professional soccer team meant there was less money to go around. I understand that it’s a business decision for them – the team never made money – but it’s still a knife to the heart for all the fans.
Jackie: “I was floored. I honestly didn’t see this coming. I had no idea we were being put up for sale because I had not heard any rumors among our fellow STH friends at the games, nor had I seen anything on the internet. Of course, we have always been the last to know anything about the Stars from the front office.”
“I’m just shocked. But there should have been signs that I look back on over the past year:
Why just a one-year contract for Coach VJ? That puzzled me and my husband, plus our fellow STH. Now it makes sense, because we were going to be one and done this year.
No pink court. We were the only WNBA team with a pink court for Breast Cancer Awareness. It was awesome! I was invited to help paint a portion of that court, got to shoot some baskets on that court with fellow survivors and sometimes one or two players, too. But no pink court this year. I asked and never got an answer.
We never got billed in September on our credit card for the season ticket renewal. We waited, we emailed and asked and the response was a changed date in billing.
There was even less coverage than the usual less coverage this year in the local newspaper and TV. There used to be billboards along major roadways with schedules of the next three to four home games back in the day.
Theme nights, back in the day (up until a few years ago) we had theme nights. We love San Antonio night, Recycle Night, Military Night, First Responders, Hoops and Hounds, Father Daughter Night, Fill the School Bus for Back to School, SA Food Bank night (bring in some canned goods and get a voucher for a ticket Breast Cancer Awareness (used to be a huge event, not this year or last year). We even had a Hawaiian themed night. But these stopped. Everything this year was tossed together last minute.?”
Jeanne: “I am surprised that the team is moving because it seemed though we supported them through several tough seasons the future was looking bright. No indication was given to STH that the team was leaving. The reps pushed hard for ticket renewal and I know of many new season ticket-holders that came on board for the 2018 season.”
Cathleen: “I am more upset than surprised. For the first 10 years, I really felt Spurs Sports & Entertainment were behind the Stars. Hell, our first COO was Clarissa Davis – played an undefeated season for UT – A local hero. Slowly and methodically, we started losing the little perks. Free t-shirts, fan rewards etc. I think we knew it was coming, we just didn’t want to admit it. The Spurs organization finally showed their true colors and loyalty. Unfortunately, our local news never really covered the Stars. Hell, high school football got more coverage.”
What does the loss of the team in San Antonio mean to you?
Suzanne: “We (there are four of us who have had season tickets by each other since the beginning) also support UTSA women’s basketball, so we will still support the sport. But not having the professional team here is a blow. Before the Stars came here, we tried to go to some of Houston’s games, but that’s not an option now. Dallas is much further to travel to, so I doubt we will make many of those games. It’s disappointing that the girls’ basketball teams that attended the professional games won’t have that option any more, either. It seems like boys have plenty of athletic role models, but girls? No so much.”
Jackie: “Well, it was something my husband and I enjoyed going to together and along with our friends. We made so many new friends. We both love sports and this was something we really loved to go watch Live. Didn’t like the losing seasons, those were painful, but we stuck it out. This team also presented a positive role model for our young women in sports in and around [San Antonio]. They inspired young women to make a goal and go for it. Now that is gone. I’m going to miss not having something to look forward to this next WNBA season, going to miss it a lot!”
Jeanne: “The loss of the team leaves me sad and angry. The young ladies on the team were such good role models for the young girls and boys in the community and they gave their time and energy to make the community a better place. The price for tickets to the games was affordable to most families. I will miss the friendships formed with the players and not being able to see other STH that I became acquainted with through the fifteen seasons.”
Cathleen: “The loss means everything to me. This was more than a basketball team. This was a group of talented athletes that gave hope to young girls that they could dream big, be anything. It was a summer full of great basketball with athletes that cared about the community. This franchise did Ruth Riley and Vickie Johnson wrong. We were a young team, just starting to gel. They never gave us a chance. “
“On another note, I was part of a group called Stars Section Leaders. This was a group that would ‘adopt’ a player and highlight them in the section they sat with. Out of our own pocket we would purchase banners – at $75.00 a pop, that would have the players section name. For example – “Hamby’s Hoopsters.” We would purchase rally towels, draw-string bags, make posters, had out balloons, all on our personal dime! SS&E never gave us a nod, but we did it for the team and the fans. I will really miss doing that. The players loved it.”
Do you have any thoughts on the performance of the team in the past few seasons with losing records, change in coaching, etc.?
Suzanne: “I love Coach Hughes as a person, but some of the trades he made were baffling. We also questioned why he continued to start players who weren’t performing. But our losing seasons have also had a lot to do with injuries – they killed us.”
Jackie: “We were a revolving door for the first few years with coaches. I loved Coach Hughes and his wife, but sometimes his coaching decisions and trading decisions (if they truly were his) made my head spin. I never understood why some players that showed potential didn’t get the playing time they deserved…. I got frustrated that we were constantly losing, repeatedly. There had to be a reason, but what was it? The coach? The team chemistry? What? But loyalty factors in this for me and win or lose, we were there to cheer on our team. If you truly are a fan, I think, you stay for the good, the bad and the ugly. And Lord knows our team the last few years was the poster child for the WNBA in injuries. That killed us for at least the last three seasons. It was like we never could catch a break.”
Jeanne: “Though the Stars struggled to achieve winning seasons many times, I was a true fan who supported them whether they won or lost. Those of us who were loyal fans celebrated the wins and mourned the losses. Would I have like to have seen the Stars win a championship? Of course, but I supported these young ladies who played with so much heart and left in on the court every game. There were coaches that I liked and some that I felt were not a good fit. In the end I was elated that Vicki Johnson was given the chance to be the head coach and even though it was a tough season, toward the end she had the team moving in the right direction. Everyone was looking forward to next season and the core of young players the team had to build on.”
Cathleen: “Did we underperform in the last year or so, probably. This season was marred by injuries before it started, thanks to overseas play. We had a No. 1 pick that really didn’t want to be here, but warmed up to situation. I love Dan Hughes, but I think we got a little stale. STH were beyond excited they hired VJ. I knew, and the fans knew, VJ would bring a new passion, but that takes time and by the end of the season – the team was playing great. It was finally starting to click and the fans had really high hopes for next season, but the organization bailed on the team and on their fans.
Bottom line, SS&E used us as a seat filler.”

Is bitcoin another tulip craze or a legitimate investment?
From becoming a legal currency in Japan to being vulnerable to hacks, here are five things to know about bitcoin. (Amber Ferguson/The Washington Post)
Every instinct as an investor tells me to stay away from bitcoin, the online “crypto” currency invented by some mystery man and criticized by JPMorgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon on Tuesday as a “fraud.”
Dimon, one of the most powerful voices on Wall Street, said he would fire anyone trading in it because it’s “stupid.”
“It’s worse than tulip bulbs,” said Dimon, referring to the 17th-century mania that ended in collapse. “It won’t end well. It will blow up.”
Like most American investors, I am into vanilla savings like mutual funds, stocks, bonds and cold, hard cash. I don’t buy gold. I don’t trade in options. No derivatives for me. I don’t know how to trade in currencies. I don’t even buy lottery tickets.
[What’s behind the Dow’s stunning rise?]
I don’t know what to make of bitcoin. You can’t eat it, wash in it, wear it, drive it. But you definitely can spend it. The price had risen 300 percent this year to more than $4,000, but bitcoin’s value slipped Wednesday following Dimon’s comments.
A bitcoin sign in Toronto. (Mark Blinch/Reuters)
“It’s quite speculative,” said Arthur Levitt, former commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. “I would consider investing in companies that use bitcoin, or trade in bitcoin. I’m not sure I would invest in bitcoin itself. It fluctuates for reasons that are hard to understand.”
But cryptocurrency is with us for the future, he said. “I don’t know whether it will be bitcoin or ethereum, to name just two. But it’s here to stay because of the disparity between countries where a monetary system is robust and countries where there is virtually no monetary system. This comes up as an alternative currency.”
It was created by an unknown person in 2009 under the alias of Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoins can be used to buy merchandise anonymously, involving lower or no fees and no banks.
Australian entrepreneur Craig Wright has come forward as the mysterious creator behind the virtual currency Bitcoin. Here’s a look at what we know about the creator’s pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin’s history and Wright’s claims. (Jenny Starrs/The Washington Post)
The currency is traded on “bitcoin exchanges” where people can buy and sell using various currencies. Bitcoins are a product of something called “blockchain technology,” and they are stored in digital wallets that exist in the cloud or on people’s computers.
The currency is unregulated and its future is uncertain. It is not tied to any government or country.
“I’m a bull about the technology behind bitcoin, but I don’t buy it because I don’t have confidence that I can predict the price,” said Kevin Werbach, professor of legal studies and business ethics at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
One adviser, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he did not want to publicly endorse it as an investment, said he would encourage people to buy small amounts in case the price goes wild.
[A first lesson on the stock market: Don’t run from a good sale]
“It’s clearly a speculative bubble,” Werbach said. “There is nothing that has happened that would justify the short-term run-up in the price. But that doesn’t prove it’s a bad investment. It may be we are seeing early signs of a long-term set of uses that will justify this price or a much higher price.”
CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin said on “Squawk Box” Wednesday that he didn’t know where to come down on bitcoin. Allianz economist Mohamed El-Erian, one of the show’s guests, said bitcoin has value but its price is inflated because it is not going to see widespread adoption.
It’s worth “at least half of what it is, a third of what it is,” El-Erian said. He called it a “disruptive” technology but won’t see widespread use.
Christian Catalini, an expert on the economics of digitalization, said most cryptocurrencies today will probably not exist a decade from now.
[The GOP is looking for ways to pay for tax cuts. Your 401(k) may bear the cost]
“These are highly speculative assets and extremely risky investment vehicles,” said Catalini, as assistant professor for technological innovation at the MIT Sloan School of Management. “Right now there is a very high level of enthusiasm about crypto tokens and blockchain, and this has resulted in unrealistic expectations about the value of some of these tokens.”
Catalini cautioned that “it’s easy to dismiss bitcoin unless you focus on what the major technological breakthrough behind it means for digital platforms. With bitcoin, you have the ability to exchange a scarce, digital token across the globe without having to rely on an intermediary. This is a fundamental change in how we transfer value across the globe and how we design marketplaces.”
“You can’t advise anyone you like to buy bitcoin,” Michael Farr, a Washington investment manager, said. “Upside volatility is always seductive. Downside volatility is excruciating. With no way to determine intrinsic value, any purchase is just gambling. If you want to gamble, go to Vegas. At least they’ll give you a free drink when you lose.”

The Trump Caucus, who are they? We should be very curious.  Where did the congressional base support come from?  He did not get into office as a solo act.  Two of his supporters even seem to be honest and sane!
1.      Chris Collins (R-N.Y.)   http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2016/03/why-did-ny-rep-chris-collins-endorse-donald-trump
a. Do you remember Carl Paladino? Sure you do. He's the wealthy developer and racist jackass who somehow managed to win the Republican nomination for New York governor in 2010 and proceeded to run a campaign drenched in almost fetid ugliness. He hasn't changed much in the intervening years and he is—unsurprisingly—supporting Donald Trump for president. A few days ago he sent a message to his email list:
b.      We haven't heard from you following my last memo. The press said I was trying to bully you; obviously that is a misnomer. After all, you are the duly elected representative of your constituents and you know what is best for them. Don't you?
c.       ....This is our last request that you join Trump for President and try to preserve what's left of your pathetic careers in government. Whatever you do, staying neutral is not an option. Pick a horse in the race and you may salvage some of your constituents' respect for you. Not choosing paints you as a coward. The bus is leaving the station very soon. Get on, or you'll be left behind.

a.       has joined 101 other members of the House in urging President-Elect Donald Trump to move the American embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. During the presidential campaign, the president-elect strongly supported the move to Jerusalem, which Israel considers to be its capital city. Currently, the U.S. embassy in Israel is the only American embassy not located in the capital as identified by the host nation. (AP Photo/Eitan Hess-Ashkenazi, File) (Eitan Hess-Ashkenazi)
b.      http://heavy.com/news/2016/11/lou-barletta-donald-trump-transition-team-member-congress-pennsylvania-who-is-bio-wife-illegal-immigration/  Lou Barletta, a noted hard-liner on illegal immigration, is another member of Donald Trump‘s transition team and has supported the billionaire’s run for the Oval Office since March 2016. He’s one of four members of Congress on the Executive Committee, alongside Chris Collins, Marsha Blackburn, Devin Nunes and Tom Marino.
3.      Tom Marino (R-Pa.), http://www.alternet.org/rss/breaking_news/545029/rep._tom_marino,_on_subcommittee_for_africa,_doesn't_know_libya_is_in_africa/
a.       Rep. Tom Marino, on subcommittee for Africa, doesn't know Libya is in Africa.
b.      Trump has come under heavy fire in the last two days for not immediately renouncing former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke’s support in a TV interview. But Marino, citing Trump's daughter Ivanka's religion, said Trump isn’t racist. Billy Long (R-La.),
4.      Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.),
a.        http://www.latimes.com/la-na-trailguide-05262016-meet-donald-trump-s-unlikely-e-1464276047-htmlstory.html Cramer takes a mostly traditional Republican " all of the above" approach to energy policy -- rolling back environmental regulations, including the landmark Clean Power Plan now making its way through the courts, and continuing production of oil and coal. Though he has made headlines with his thoughts on a modest carbon tax , he is skeptical of climate change.
b.      http://inthesetimes.com/article/19578/donald-trumps-energy-adviser-doesnt-know-how-electricity-works  Donald Trump’s energy adviser does not know how electricity works. In response to an audience inquiry about promoting renewable electricity sources, Cramer punted the first response to Houser, saying of the question, “this is a good nerdy one.” When his turn came, Cramer said, “Great question. … It is complicated when you talk about the movement of electricity. You know, neurons go where neurons want to go once they’re on the line, right?” Contra Cramer, neurons are nerve cells in animal nervous systems (including humans’) engaged in electrochemical processes that allow us to think and feel and follow through on basic cognitive functions. Unlike electrons, they are not generally found flowing through the electric grid. Cramer serves on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, is a former member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, and was previously North Dakota’s Public Service Commissioner, a role that involved overseeing the state’s electric utilities.
5.      Mike Kelly (R-Pa.),
a.       http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/11/17/mike-kelly-trump-has-a-mandate-to-implement-colossal-change/ Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Mike Kelly wants President-elect Donald Trump to begin repealing President Barack Obama’s executive orders the moment he assumes office. “President-elect Trump has a clear mandate to implement colossal change within the federal government,” Kelly said in a statement.
b.      http://kelly.house.gov/press-release/icymi-rep-kelly-profiled-one-president-trumps-8-favorite-house-members  First elected in 2010, Rep. Mike Kelly is one of three Pennsylvanians in the group, and he became a staple on the campaign trail with Trump in the Keystone State. As the owner of a successful chain of auto dealerships in western Pennsylvania, he relates to Trump as a businessman and innovative leader.
6.      Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.),
a.       http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/432179/scott-desjarlais-americas-worst-congressman-endorses-donald-trump  America’s Worst Congressman Endorses Donald Trump. If you’ve heard of DesJarlais, it’s likely because he became somewhat notorious in 2012 when it was revealed that the allegedly stalwart “pro-life” politician had supported two of his ex-wife’s abortions, had a whopping six affairs, and was caught on tape apparently pressing one of his mistresses to terminate her pregnancy.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press has the details: A decade before calling himself “a consistent supporter of pro-life values,” Tennessee physician and Republican U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais supported his ex-wife’s decision to get two abortions before their marriage, according to the congressman’s sworn testimony during his divorce trial.
Obtained by the Chattanooga Times Free Press, the couple’s 2001 trial transcript also confirms DesJarlais had sexual relationships with at least two patients, three coworkers and a drug representative while he was chief of staff at Grandview Medical Center in Jasper, Tenn. During one affair with a female patient, DesJarlais prescribed her drugs, gave her an $875 watch and bought her a plane ticket to Las Vegas, records show.
And lest you think that DesJarlais has since reformed to become a man of sterling character, trial transcripts revealed that he lied to his constituents about taping his former mistress: The 679-page transcript reveals new details about DesJarlais’ interactions with a 24-year-old-patient, who claimed she became pregnant with DesJarlais’ child during a short fling in 2000 and that the doctor later pressed her to have an abortion. b.      http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/08/scott-desjarlais-reelection-110028  NASHVILLE—Two abortions. Maybe three, if you count the one he pressured a girlfriend—who happened to be his patient—to get. Pulling out a gun during an argument with his first wife. Prescribing pills to another patient while they dated. Getting reprimanded by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners for dallying with patients, an ethics violation.
Voters in Tennessee’s 4th Congressional District had plenty of reasons not to vote for incumbent Scott DesJarlais last week. The Tea Party Republican might have snuck under the radar to win a first term in 2010 and held back an onslaught of negative publicity long enough to capture a second one in 2012, but a third time? When conservative voters in this district, which stretches from the edges of Chattanooga to Nashville, went to the polls, they were widely expected to run off a pro-life, family-values conservative who had shown in divorce court that he could bend those beliefs in his own life. If this was supposed to be a throw-the-bums-out kind of year in Congress, then DesJarlais was the ultimate bum….
As a reporter who has followed DesJarlais these past 21 months, I have watched with a mixture of amazement and respect as he—running for re-election for the first time since it surfaced that his personal life could have been a storyline from “Nip/Tuck” and written off by political handicappers in both Tennessee and Washington—has managed to mount a comeback with little money or political support. In a year in which incumbents have beaten back challengers nationwide, a DesJarlais win could very well be the most extraordinary feat of them all, putting him alongside the likes of Ohio’s notorious James Traficant, who served nearly 20 years despite charges of tax-evasion, taking bribes from mobsters and forcing his aides to clean horse stalls on his farm, in the ranks of some the most improbable congressional hangers-on of all time.

7.      Tom Reed (R-N.Y.)
a.       Upon election to Congress, Reed was appointed to the House Judiciary Committee and House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He was selected to be a vice chair for president-elect Donald Trump's transition team.
b.      Surprisingly, although he was an early supporter, Reed criticized comments made by Trump. “Women are never to be talked about in this way. As someone with eight older sisters, a wife and daughter I care deeply about, it is disappointing and offensive to hear these words,” Reed said. “It is not right and these comments must be called out for what they are, just wrong.”
8.      Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.)
a.       http://www.breitbart.com/2016-presidential-race/2016/06/17/hunternottrumpflack/  “I am done with trying to articulate or explain or answer for what Donald Trump says,” said Rep. Duncan Hunter (R.-Calif.). “I think he’ll make a great president,” said the Marine officer and combat veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. “I think he’ll make good decisions on the economy, on the border, on national security–doesn’t mean I endorse what he says.”
