Two world records set on Mount Everest in single day
A British climber and a Nepali guide have broken their own records for the number of ascents of Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain, Fox News reports.
Rakesh Gurung, director of Nepal’s tourism department, said on Sunday that 50-year-old Briton Kenton Cool and 54-year-old Nepali guide Kami Rita Sherpa climbed the 29,032-foot summit for the 18th and 29th time respectively. They were on different expeditions accompanying their clients. Garrett Madison of the US-based expedition organising company Madison Mountaineering said of the Nepali climber:
He just keeps going and going… amazing guy!
Madison had teamed up with Kami Rita to climb the summits of Everest, Lhotse, and K2 in 2014.
K2, located in Pakistan, is the world’s second-highest mountain and Lhotse in Nepal is the fourth-tallest. Lukas Furtenbach of the Austrian expedition operator Furtenbach Adventures called Cool’s feat remarkable. Furtenbach, who is leading an expedition from the Chinese side of Everest, also said:
He is a fundamental part of the Everest guiding industry. Kenton Cool is an institution.
Both climbers used the South East Ridge route. This route was established by the first climbers New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953. It remains the most popular route to the summit of Everest.

We had played quite sedately on our journey out to Jamaica but now that he was here, Prince Philip was having none of that, introducing us instead to deck hockey “minus rules.” Within thirty seconds of the first game, the Exchange Telegraph correspondent was flat on his back and he was still having medical treatment after we arrived in New Zealand. By the time we reached Fiji there were four sprained ankles, four seriously crushed fingers, and countless minor injuries, but as Prince Philip always managed to come out quite unscathed, the games continued until the day we came ashore.

Wales vs NZ Rugby
Date: Saturday 5th November 2022
Venue: Principality Stadium, Cardiff
Kick-off: 3:15pm
Referee: Wayne Barnes (England)
TV Coverage: Live on Amazon Prime (UK and ROI)
Wales v New Zealand: Seven decades of Welsh agony against the All Blacks
Cheating, national scandal, timekeeping disasters and spine-tingling drama… Wales against New Zealand rarely disappoints.
The history of matches between two nations that bleed rugby – and plenty of the red stuff has been spilt over the years – is almost a history of the game itself.
Since the 1905 ‘Match of the Century’ which gave rise to the tradition of singing national anthems before sports events, they have battled.
Now Justin Tipuric’s side are the latest to try to lift the millstone from around their neck and bring a 69-year losing run to an end.
There is bitterness that the wait has gone on so long, not least after the most talked about accusations of cheating in Welsh rugby history.
The New Zealand head coach, Ian Foster, has welcomed back several of the All-Blacks star names to face Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.
Foster makes wholesale changes from the team that beat Japan last Saturday, including starts for Beauden Barrett, his brother Jordie and Aaron Smith. It will be Smith’s 113th Test, taking him above former fly-half Dan Carter as New Zealand’s most capped back.
Wales vs NZ Rugby in Cardiff | Match Preview
New Zealand will seek to extend their 32-match winning streak over Wales when the two sides clash at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on Saturday although the hosts fancy their chances against visitors who have not enjoyed their best year.
The All Blacks have not lost to the Welsh since 1953 and in their last nine fixtures have amassed 33-plus points in each game. They ran out 54-16 victors last season.
But by their own high standards, New Zealand have had a varied season, losing a home July series 1-2 to Ireland and, despite going on to win the Rugby Championship, suffering a first home loss to Argentina.
“What better side to come up against than a New Zealand that probably haven’t had their best season?” asked Wales coach Wayne Pivac, himself a Kiwi.
“But certainly when you look at the teamsheet, it is quality, we know we’re in for a big game but we’re there to win it.”
Teams:
Wales: 15 Leigh Halfpenny, 14 Louis Rees-Zammit, 13 George North, 12 Nick Tompkins, 11 Rio Dyer, 10 Gareth Anscombe, 9 Tomos Williams, 8 Taulupe Faletau, 7 Tommy Refell, 6 Justin Tipuric (captain), 5 Adam Beard, 4 Will Rowlands, 3 Tomas Francis, 2 Ken Owens, 1 Gareth Thomas. Replacements: 16 Ryan Elias, 17 Nicky Smith, 18 Dillon Lewis, 19 Alun Wyn Jones, 20 Christ Tshiunza, 21 Kieran Hardy, 22 Rhys Priestland, 23 Owen Watkin.
New Zealand: 15 Beauden Barrett, 14 Sevu Reece, 13 Rieko Ioane, 12 Jordie Barrett, 11 Caleb Clarke, 10 Richie Mo’unga, 9 Aaron Smith, 8 Ardie Savea, 7 Dalton Papali’i, 6 Shannon Frizzell, 5 Scott Barrett, 4 Samuel Whitelock (captain), 3 Tyrel Lomax, 2 Codie Taylor, 1 Ethan de Groot. It also stars George Sanders and Merle Oberon.)

Saint James the Greater Apostle - Feast Day: July 25th - Both Calendars - Patron of Pilgrims
This James is the brother of John the Evangelist. The two were called by Jesus as they worked with their father in a fishing boat on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus had already called another pair of brothers from a similar occupation: Peter and Andrew. "He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him" (Mark 1:19-20).
James was one of the favored three who had the privilege of witnessing the Transfiguration, the raising to life of the daughter of Jairus and the agony in Gethsemane.
Two incidents in the Gospels describe the temperament of this man and his brother. St. Matthew tells that their mother came (Mark says it was the brothers themselves) to ask that they have the seats of honor (one on the right, one on the left of Jesus) in the kingdom. "Jesus said in reply, 'You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?' They said to him, 'We can'" (Matthew 20:22). Jesus then told them they would indeed drink the cup and share his baptism of pain and death, but that sitting at his right hand or left was not his to give—it "is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father" (Matthew 20:23b). It remained to be seen how long it would take to realize the implications of their confident "We can!"
The other disciples became indignant at the ambition of James and John. Then Jesus taught them all the lesson of humble service: The purpose of authority is to serve. They are not to impose their will on others, or lord it over them. This is the position of Jesus himself. He was the servant of all; the service imposed on him was the supreme sacrifice of his own life.
On another occasion, James and John gave evidence that the nickname Jesus gave them—"sons of thunder"—was an apt one. The Samaritans would not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to hated Jerusalem. "When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, 'Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?' Jesus turned and rebuked them..." (Luke 9:54-55).
James was apparently the first of the apostles to be martyred. "About that time King Herod laid hands upon some members of the church to harm them. He had James, the brother of John, killed by the sword, and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews he proceeded to arrest Peter also" (Acts 12:1-3a).
This James, sometimes called James the Greater, is not to be confused with the author of the Letter of James and the leader of the Jerusalem community.
The scallop shell of St. James the Greater Apostle was worn as a pendant by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The shell is both a symbol of baptism (as used by St. John the Baptist) and as a symbol of pilgrimage since thirsty pilgrims used the shell to draw water to drink as they made their way to the shrine of Our Lady of the Pilar. It is said that St. James used the shell as it was small and people would give him food and drink in the shell.
The scallop shell is also incorporated into the Coat of Arms of Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Benedict’s affinity for St. Augustine of Hippo (Bishop and Doctor of the Church, 354-430 ad) is well known. While a doctoral candidate in 1953, he wrote his dissertation on The People of God in Augustine’s Teaching is always about the Church.
As the story goes, St. Augustine was once walking along the seashore as he meditated on the unfathomable depths of the central mystery of the Christian faith: the Holy Trinity. Augustine noticed a boy carrying water from the sea in a seashell and pouring it into a little hole in the sand. When Augustine asked the boy what he was doing, the boy replied, "I am emptying the sea into this hole." The boy’s futile effort to empty the sea into a little hole helped Augustine to understand that no one would ever be able to fathom and exhaust the depths of the mystery of the Triune God.
The Missionary Society of Saint James the Apostle

Prayer to Saint James the Apostle
O glorious Apostle, St. James, who by reason of thy fervent and generous heart wast chosen by Jesus to be a witness of His glory on Mount Tabor, and of His agony in Gethsemane; thou, whose very name is a symbol of warfare and victory: obtain for us strength and consolation in the unending warfare of this life, that, having constantly and generously followed Jesus, we may be victors in the strife and deserve to receive the victor’s crown in heaven. Amen.

Dave’s Faves for Deutscher + Hackett Auction 27 Nov. 2019
The last auction for the year at Deutscher + Hackett on 27 November features two collections which couldn't be more different, and wonderfully demonstrate D+H's brilliant range in their offering.
Lots 24 to 34 contains works from the Mainland Collection of Contemporary Asia Pacific Art; it was assembled with the idea of "The art of humanity: a cultural march through complex landscapes", with works by eminent contemporary artists hailing from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, China, Vietnam and Thailand, and ready to be discovered by a wider audience in Australia.
Meanwhile, lots 35 to 41 are all by Kate O'Connor, one of our now highly revered artists who had immersed themselves in the Paris of the early 20th century, but struggled to get recognition after their return home. The 6 lots were collected by a close relative of O'Connor during 50 years and represent paintings from all periods of the artist's career.
Both collections come with illuminating catalogue essays also available on the D+H website and well worth reading.
We will be attending the sale in Melbourne, and would be delighted to assist you with due diligence and pre-purchase reports before the auction and also bid for you on the night.
The viewing in Sydney is held at 16 Goodhope Street, Paddington, from 14 to 17 November.
The viewing in Melbourne is at 105 Commercial Road, South Yarra, from 21 - 27 November.
The auction is held on 27 November 2019, 7 pm, at 105 Commercial Road, South Yarra.
