Mamata Banerjee declared no partnership with Congress for upcoming elections
On Wednesday, the entire opposition INDIA bloc was shaken when Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announced cutting off Congress from TMC's Lok Sabha poll plan for the state. Mamata said that the party has decided to go in alone while offering a small possibility for "post-poll adjustments" at the "all-India level". TMC would "do whatever is needed to defeat BJP", she added.
Mamata, criticized the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra by Rahul Gandhi and said that planning a route that passes through Bengal without discussing it with its INDIA ally Trinamool was "discourteous" of the grand old party.
The Bengal CM also said that Congress had been rejecting her proposals ‘from the very beginning” and there were no discussion meetings between the two parties for two weeks. "Whatever is being said (about seat-sharing) are blatant lies. I request everyone, including a section of the media, not to propagate that."
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh also called out Congress for its double standards. "They say in Delhi that TMC is a critical INDIA partner. In Kolkata, its leaders ridicule us. This cannot go on. The reality is that Congress did not win a single assembly seat in Bengal in the 2021 polls." Another TMC MP told the media that the party had always adhered to "alliance dharma and been courteous despite Bengal Congress chief Adhir Chowdhury's pathetic and nasty comments against TMC".
Mamta also emphasized that the INDIA bloc does not belong to any one party. The alliance (INDIA) does not belong to any one party. I said earlier that let them (Congress) contest 300 seats alone. The regional parties will fight the other seats, and they (Congress) should not interfere,” she said.

"No Tie-Up With Congress": Mamata Banerjee's Bengal Twist Stuns INDIA Bloc
The Trinamool Congress will contest the elections for Bengal's 42 Lok Sabha seats on its own steam, and only consider a pan-India alliance with the Congress after results are declared, a furious Mamata Banerjee declared Wednesday. Ms Banerjee's words deliver what appears to be a final blow to hopes the two parties - widely seen as important members of the INDIA opposition bloc - will reach any agreement.
Tumblr media
"I had no discussions with the Congress. I have always said that in Bengal, we will fight alone. I gave them (the Congress) many proposals… but they rejected them. I am not concerned about what will be done in the (rest of the) country… but we are a secular party and, in Bengal, we alone will defeat BJP."
In further signs of fraying tempers, she also hit out at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and his 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra', which is expected to enter Bengal on Thursday but might skip Kolkata.
"They are coming to my state… but did not have courtesy to inform me, even though I am part of the INDIA bloc. So there is no relations with me, as far as Bengal is concerned," she told reporters.
Ms Banerjee has a good rapport with Congress matriarch Sonia Gandhi, but her ties with Mr Gandhi are seen as strained. She has made it clear, earlier too, she is against allowing her 'ally' to contest in Bengal.
"INDIA will be present in India (but) in Bengal the Trinamool Congress will fight. In Bengal it is only Trinamool that can teach the BJP a lesson. It can show the country the path to victory…" she had said.
Minutes later the Congress responded through comms boss Jairam Ramesh.
Mr Ramesh, who is with Rahul Gandhi and the yatra in Assam, said his party "cannot imagine INDIA bloc without Mamataji". Mr Ramesh insisted "all INDIA partners will unitedly fight Lok Sabha polls in Bengal".
Ms Banerjee's announcement has drawn a scathing jibe from the BJP's Amit Malviya, who called it a "sign of desperation". "Unable to hold her political ground, Mamata Banerjee wants to fight all seats, in the hope that she can still be relevant, after the polls…" the BJP's IT Cell boss posted on X.
The Trinamool vs Congress squabble over seat-sharing, and the larger picture of how INDIA might defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP, has rumbled on for weeks with no apparent resolution, with neither side willing to back down. The Congress has, so far, ignored deadlines to close a deal.
On Tuesday Ms Banerjee criticised the Congress' "unjustified" demand for 10-12 Lok Sabha seats in her state; she had offered two, pointing to its' abysmal record. It won four seats in 2014 and only two in 2019.
A senior Trinamool leader, on condition of anonymity, told news agency PTI, "(Ms Banerjee) said, 'Don't think about seat-sharing with Congress'… she said she offered two seats but they demanded 10-12".
Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh last week warned the Congress against "unjustified bargaining".
Meanwhile, Ms Banerjee, in a show of strength, has directed party leaders in Birbhum and Murshidabad district to begin planning for the combined five Lok Sabha seats on their own. The latter is key because one of its three seats is Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury's constituency of Berhampore.
Mr Chowdhury, the Congress' state unit boss, is fiercely opposed to sharing seats with the Trinamool, and has repeatedly attacked Ms Banerjee, despite efforts from leaders on both sides to stitch an alliance. He responded to the offer by declaring Ms Banerjee owed her success to the "mercy" of the Congress.
Rahul Gandhi, asked about these attacks, played them down, insisting "Mamata Banerjee is very close to me and our party" and that it is "natural", sometimes, for the two sides to criticise each other.
But they are not going to disrupt the relations between the Congress and the TMC," he insisted.
Meanwhile, away from Bengal, the Trinamool is also unhappy over the Congress' refusal to play second fiddle to regional parties when required. The Congress has already been criticised for this by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav after it refused to share seats for November's Madhya Pradesh election.
Ms Banerjee on Monday said the Congress was welcome to fight 300 seats on its own, but urged the party to surrender some seats to regional parties that will have the best chance of defeating the BJP.
"Particular regions should be left to regional parties. They can fight 300 seats alone… I will help them, I will not contest those seats… but they are adamant about doing what they want," she said.
"I have the power to take on the BJP, but some people don't want to listen to us about seat-sharing. If you don't want to fight the BJP, then at least don't give away seats to it," the fiery Trinamool leader said.
Ms Banerjee is one of the few opposition leaders to have enjoyed electoral success against the BJP in recent years, after orchestrating a statement win over the saffron party in the last Assembly election.
In 2019 too she ensured her party had an edge, winning 22 seats. That, though, was less than the 34 from five years ago. Ominously, BJP went from two to 18.

Stand-Up Comedy in India circa 2019
As of 2019, the stand-up comedy as an art form has caught up in India. Stand-up comedians perform in urban and cosmopolitan cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai. They use English interspersed with Hindi.
This is a recent phenomenon i.e. not even a decade old.
First, we consider Russel Peters - a Canadian of Indian-descent.
Canada in the past three to four decades has become home immigrants from many parts of the developing World: Indian sub-continent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh), West Asia (Afghanistan and Iran), Eastern Europe (Poland, Ukraine and other countries of former Soviet Bloc), South America, Africa, and East Asia (China, Koreas, Japan).
Russel Peters has an astute sense of observation. Seemingly, growing up around such a diverse Canadian populace, he caught on the art of mimicking people from different cultures. He performs, in Canada and US, stand-up comedy concerning different cultures.
Since the mid-2000s, his live performance recordings starting getting distributed via internet, thanks to the then-burgeoning internet speeds and the resulting broadband revolution. This, in turn, resulted in a larger pull to his live acts, especially the Indian diaspora. As a result, he became a big hit with Indian diaspora crowds in the West (the US, Canada, and the UK). And earned a lot too i.e. for the years 2013-2014, Forbes magazine named him the third richest comedian in the world.
He jokes about the idiosyncrasies of people belonging to different cultures. For example, how Indian parents treat their children, the stinginess of Chinese/Indians/Jews, and many such things about Indians, Chinese, Arabs, Filipinos, and Africans. His observations are accurate and never seem to fail to enthrall the audience. Unfortunately, he sometimes resorts to crass vulgarity which clearly embarrasses his audience.
Recordings of his acts are available freely on YouTube, the most popular video-sharing platform on the internet.
About a decade later, since his recordings started to appear online, the stand-up comics started mushrooming in India too. And now, in 2019, almost half-a-decade later, at-least four dozens of Indian stand-up comedians can be found online. Their recordings are not only available on free platforms like Youtube, but also on paid-for-video-streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime.
These comics can be divided into three tiers:
Tier I: Varun Grover, Rahul Subramanian, Kunal Kamra, Siddharth Dudeja, Amit Tandon, Jaspreet Singh, Madhvendra Singh, Karan Chauhan, Maheep Singh, Sourav Ghosh
Tier II: Atul Khatri, Anshu Mor, Manish Tyagi, Amar, Ravi Gupta, Karunesh Talwar, Abhishek Upmanyu, Sundeep Sharma, Vinay Sharma, Vipul Goyal, Rahul Dua, Mayank Pandey, Harsh Gujral, Rohit Swain, Jeeveshu Ahluwalia, Amit Sharma
Tier III: Angad Singh Ranyal, Gaurav Gupta, Abhineet Mishra, Kishore Dayani, Parvinder Singh, Abijit Ganguly, Manik Mahna, Pratyush Chaubey, Parvez Hassan, Ujjwal Sonar, Rajeev Nigam.
Tier I comics are original and their observations are unique. They comment on contemporary India i.e. modern families, relationships, politics and everything that is in vogue.
Tier II and Tier III comics are not as good as Tier I ones. Their acts seem contrived. Often, they resort to generating shock through crassness and vulgarity. However, considering their online following, they are equally or more popular than Tier I comics.

New Post has been published on http://www.visionmp.com/amit-shah-challenge-mamata-banerjee-kolkata-rally-today-bengal-nrc-takes-2019-centre-stage/
Amit Shah to Challenge Mamata Banerjee With Kolkata Rally Today as 'Bengal NRC' Takes 2019 Centre Stage
Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Amit Shah is expected to rake up the National Register of Citizenship (NRC) issue during his speech here on Saturday. This will be Shah’s fifth visit to West Bengal in the last one year as the party attempts to wrest nearly half the seats from Mamata Banerjee’s TMC in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Shah, who has been embroiled in a heated war of words with Banerjee ever since the National Register of Citizen final draft was released in Assam, will address a massive political gathering that has been organised by the BJP’s youth wing under the banner of ‘Yuva Samabesh’ on Kolkata’s Mayo Road.
Shah’s speech is likely to run on the same lines as his other addresses since the NRC draft came out on July 31 during which he has accused the opposition parties of playing vote bank politics on an issue that has “national security implications”.
He raised the issue in poll-bound Rajasthan and also during a News18 event on Tuesday, where he said that “40 lakh infiltrators have entered our country illegally” and said that they will be deported if they can’t prove their citizenship.
The BJP chief has often singled out Banerjee for attack on the NRC issue as she has been the most vocal critic of the Centre’s implementation of the Supreme Court monitored exercise, saying that “not only Muslims, Hindus have been excluded” from the draft too and Bengalis in particular have been targeted.
In the run-up to Shah’s rally, BJP leaders in the state have given clear indications that they will make the alleged presence of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants a poll issue and seek an Assam-like NRC there.
BJP general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya told reporters that there could be over one crore illegal immigrants in West Bengal and suggest that NRC should be adopted in all border states to identify them.
State BJP president Dilip Ghosh had earlier said that NRC will be published, on the lines of the one in Assam, if the saffron party was voted to power in the state.
After making inroads in the northeast, Shah has set an ambitious target for the party in Bengal for the Lok Sabha election, asking the party cadre to ensure 22 out of the 42 seats.
He has made regular visits since 2017. He visited Bengal on April 25 and then in September 11 last year. He also visited Bengal on June 27 and Saturday’s visit would be his second in less than 50 days.
According to party sources, Shah will land at Kolkata’s NSCB International Airport around 9 am and he will go to Port Trust Guest House. From there he will go to Mayo Road to deliver his speech around noon. He will take a flight back to Delhi at night.
Beside the NRC issue, Shah is likely to talk about Centre’s schemes for the poor and how they will work if voted to power. Since it’s a youth wing event, he is also likely to urge youths to join hands with the BJP.
The Kolkata police after delaying giving its nod for the rally has reportedly turned down BJP’s request to use drones and restricted the use of walkie-talkie. The BJP had made the requests to ensure better coordination in wake of the tent collapse incident at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally on July 16 when 90 people got injured.
A large number of policemen will be deployed to maintain the law and order situation on Saturday. CCTV cameras have been installed in and around venue to keep a close watch in the area and giant screens have been installed inside.
The BJP has given a contract to set up pandals to a Ranchi-based event management group Speaking to News18 over telephone from Ranchi, company founder Kunal Ajwani said extra safety measures are being taken while setting up the pandal, which will be around 5000 sq ft covered area. ‘There will be 30 big screens and the stage will be eight feet tall,” he said.
“Most of the items we sent it from Ranchi and all the iron bars, nuts and bolts are new. We have sent two drones but we will use that only after the state BJP get permission from the Kolkata Police,” he said.
The BJP’s state unit has trained nearly 500 volunteers to manage the crowd and special buses have been arranged to bring party workers from other districts to make the rally a success. Some people have already started coming to Kolkata from various places and were put up at several places in and around the city.
On Friday, a central BJP delegation comprising national general secretaries Kailash Vijayvargiya and P Murlidhar Rao visited the venue to examine the safety measures and other arrangements made for the event.
State BJP president Dilip Ghosh said, “The event will be a successful one. We are expecting lakhs of people from all over the state.”
The TMC, meanwhile, has chosen the date to observe a “Dhikkar Diwas” on the NRC issue. TMC’s Arjun Singh said, “It (Shah’s rally) will be a flop show as people don’t trust anyone in BJP including its state party president Dilip Ghosh.”

Arsenic-polluted water linked to cancer in India
(CNN)Millions of people in Bihar, India, are showing symptoms of arsenic poisoning, which can be linked to cancer, due to consumption of contaminated drinking water.
The symptoms arise after many years of exposure, say experts.
The state of Bihar, in eastern India, is one of the country's most impoverished states. More than 10 million people in the state are estimated to be threatened with arsenic poisoning or arsenicosis from contaminated groundwater.
Dr. Ashok Ghosh, a professor at the Mahavir Cancer Institute and Research Center in Patna, Bihar, has been studying groundwater pollution in the state since 2004 and says arsenic concentration has shot up in the groundwater supply of some Bihar districts since he began looking into it.
According to reports, 17 of Bihar's 38 districts have groundwater with arsenic concentrations above the permissible limit. Hand pumps in some parts, such as the district of Buxar, have been found to have severe arsenic poisoning with concentrations above 1,500 parts per billion.
World Health Organization guidelines state that the permissible limit of arsenic in drinking water is 10 ppb, while the Indian government states it to be 50 ppb, five times higher. These districts show far higher concentrations than either limit.
Since 2004, Ghosh has tested 44,000 tubewells in Bihar and found that about 30% have water with arsenic concentration higher than 10 ppb.
Ghosh believes the signs of cancer and other ailments now showing among the populations at risk are due to their continued to exposure to this toxin.
In 2016, the Mahavir Cancer Institute registered as many as 23,000 new cancer patients, and Ghosh found that many, though not all, of these cases were linked to exposure to this toxin. Some cases are thought to be a result of tobacco chewing and smoking, he said.
"When I joined the cancer hospital, I started checking blood, hair and nail samples of cancer patients and found they have very clear-cut symptoms of arsenic poisoning," Ghosh said. "I saw 6 and 7-year-old children coming with cancer. These children don't chew tobacco or smoke. It was very disturbing, and I could not sleep. Slowly, I adjusted."
Arsenic is an element that occurs in organic and inorganic compounds. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, its presence in inorganic compounds is highly toxic and carcinogenic.
"It is a slow poison. Symptoms appear after continuous ingestion over five to 12 years," Ghosh said.
The first known case of arsenic poisoning in India occurred in 1983 in Kolkata, West Bengal, when a patient developed skin lesions, said Dr. Kunal Kanti Majumdar, a professor at the KPC Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Chronic arsenic poisoning can lead to cancer, depending on factors such as the dose, how long it is consumed, a person's nutrition levels and any genetic predisposition. Arsenic has been linked to various forms of cancer in India, the most common being skin cancer, followed by cancers of the bladder, kidney and lung, says Majumdar.
Common symptomsof arsenic poisoning include pigmentation and keratosis, a condition that leads to hardening of the skin on the palms and soles of the feet. Arsenic poisoning can also lead to respiratory diseases, vascular diseases, neuropathy and liver fibrosis.
Before the 1970s in India, surface water from tanks, ponds and open wells was used for drinking. But since then, millions of tubewells were installed in the Ganges delta, the International Agency for Research on Cancer says, to prevent gastrointestinal diseases such as diarrhea from surface water. People soon became dependent on groundwater.
"The cause of the upsurge in arsenic concentration is the overuse of groundwater for irrigation and drinking, which happens when withdrawal rates exceed recharge rate," Ghosh said, adding that this overuse changes the chemistry of the aquifer. "There is no law here to check excessive groundwater withdrawal."
These changes mean arsenic -- which previously occurred in a relatively harmless insoluble conjugate with iron called arsenopyrite -- then split due to overuse, contaminating the groundwater with a soluble ionic form of arsenic that has since been consumed by millions of people for decades.
Within India, arsenic concentration is particularly high in and around the Ganges delta in eastern and northeastern India, affecting the states of Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Manipur and Chhattisgarh. This is due to silt from the Himalayas containing arsenopyrite.
As a remedial measure, Ghosh simply recommends individualized testing of each hand pump or tubewell, and marking it as safe or unsafe based on arsenic levels in the water.
His team developed a color code -- blue for unsafe and red for safe -- and began painting some hand pumps in Bihar, but they quickly became discolored. Ghosh stated that government support is needed to systematically implement a method of discrimination between high and low arsenic sources and to educate local residents about the risks.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer says arsenic contamination of groundwater has also been found to naturally occur in countries including Argentina, Chile, Mexico, the United States, China and Bangladesh.
