Why wasn’t she here?
The thought beats behind his temples like a quiet pulse—soft, relentless. Ever since that last dream—the one where he saw himself, the boy he used to be, and her, wrapped in something tender and untouchable—he hasn’t been able to let it go.
She was there for him. She stayed. Through every storm. Every silence. Every unraveling of the world around them.
But where is she now?
And why can’t he remember losing her?
The waking world gives no answers. Only the ache remains—dull, insistent. So he does the only thing that feels right:
He returns to the fog.

Night after night, he slips beneath the surface, welcoming the chill of mist and memory. What was once an occasional dream becomes a ritual. The fog thickens faster. Greets him like an old friend—quiet, constant.
And she is always there.
At first, she’s a presence. Familiar, but blurred. Her voice was a soft echo. Her laugh was a thread of warmth pulled from some half-remembered time. He treats it like a puzzle. Logs the fragments. Tracks lunar phases. Journals dream symbols, sleep cycles, anything that might explain her. As if he's a scientist hunting for reason.
But then, one night—
She sharpens.
No more silhouettes. No more teasing shadows.
He sees her face—truly sees it.
Not some sculpted ideal. Not the distant, porcelain perfection of fantasy. No, her beauty is grounded. Gentle. Real. A mouth that lifts a little crooked when she laughs. A nose that crinkles. Soft eyes full of clarity and storm. There’s nothing flawless about her—and that’s what makes her unforgettable. She doesn’t feel imagined. She feels inevitable.
She smiles, and the world softens as she tells him her name.
She says his name, and something inside him answers.
And for the first time, he stops watching from a distance. He steps forward.
He is no longer the echo of a past self. No longer just a dreamer looking in.
He is present. Awake inside the dream.

And the dream changes.
It started with replays of long-forgotten memories, core memories from a different life that had somehow ingrained and shaped his current lifetime. Soon, new dreams were made by them. New moments. New warmth. They walk shoulder to shoulder through fogged ruins and half-lit skies. She leans into him on a crumbling ledge above some forgotten city. He threads his fingers through hers. She hums a lullaby that curls through the fog like smoke.
She touches his face.
He touches hers.
It feels terrifyingly real. And impossibly safe.
He tells himself it’s still about understanding. About answers. But he knows now—
He’s fallen.
And the fog, once a mystery, has become a home.

He records sleep cycles. Notes variations in REM duration. Tags dream sequences in coded shorthand. Anything to quantify what keeps pulling him under. The dreams aren't random—he’s certain of it. And if there’s a pattern, he’ll find it.
But analysis gives way to fixation.
The fog becomes a constant. The woman in it—no longer an anomaly, but a presence he anticipates. Her voice lingers past waking. Her silhouette stays imprinted behind his eyelids, more persistent than memory. He tells himself he's looking for causality, perhaps even a misfiring of neurons tied to fatigue or unprocessed emotion.
But he knows better.
The obsession has taken root.
He no longer observes. He yearns. For the dreams. For her. For the strange, impossible feeling that he was once whole in a way the real world no longer allows.
And then, the ache turns sweet.
One dream slips in quieter than the others. It isn’t grand or tragic. Just her—offering him something small. A piece of candy, unwrapped and pressed into his palm like a secret.
He eyes it suspiciously at first, turns it over with a stoic detachment. But she only grins, patient and expectant. So he places it on his tongue—and freezes.
His whole face scrunches. Eyebrows shoot up. A tiny sound escapes him, a cross between surprise and wonder. It’s sweet. Unreasonably sweet. His eyes widen like he’s just discovered a new vital sign. Then comes a quiet, pleased hum. He tries to hide how much he likes it. Fails. Completely.
She laughs—not at him, but because of him. Because in that small moment, he lets his guard down. And he smiles. An open, boyish thing not seen in years.
After that, he begins to crave the dreams. Not just for what they show him—but for the comfort she brings. The ease of her presence. A place where nothing is demanded of him beyond simply existing.
He remembers another dream: gentler, still. She doesn’t flinch at the frost in his hands or the cold breath curling around his words.
Instead, she drew close and took his cold hands in hers, into her warmth. Then she asked, “Can you make something beautiful with it?”
That night, he tries.
The first creation is a mess of soft snow—a clumsy little thing that looks vaguely like a rabbit, or perhaps a bear. It melts before he can finish. But she takes it in her hands like it’s something precious. Her laughter doesn’t mock. It invites.
So, he tries again.
The next one isn’t perfect. Still awkward, still too blocky—but it doesn’t melt. And when she sees it, her eyes light up.
For the first time, his power doesn’t feel like a burden. It feels like something he chose. Something soft and expressive, shaped by her belief in him.
With her, even winter begins to feel warm.

They come softly, like brushstrokes on canvas—layered until one day, he wakes with colours lingering in his lungs. Fingers tingling like they’ve been holding a paintbrush all night.
At first, it’s only texture. Fog and light and the ghost of melody. But then comes colour. Explosive, radiant colour that bleeds into everything. Walls, sky, even the spaces between his ribs. He sees her there, always at the centre of it. Not directing the dream, not standing still like a muse, but moving. Dancing. Laughing. Living inside the very chaos that calls to him.
And the world she moves through?
It’s like stepping into a living canvas.
A broken theatre, scattered with forgotten props. Rusted catwalks high above a city that hums with unfinished lullabies. Neon lights flickering in time with her breath. It's surreal. Beautiful. Once, when he was younger—loud, defiant, always on the edge of trouble—she stopped him mid-mischief with nothing more than a soft voice and a brush. “Try this instead,” she said, and handed him a jar of watercolours.

Then, he tried.

He kept returning to her.

He wakes, sometimes, with the ghost of harmony still in his fingertips.
He plays nothing perfectly. He sings with no training. But now, in the depths of the night—when others might sleep, but his world is wide awake, lawless and lit by neon—he finds silence between sounds. He puts on that same record—an old one he tracked down obsessively, heart pounding—and hums along to the notes they once made together in the dream.
He knows she’s not real.
And yet, in every bar of music, in every off-key note he dares to sing alone, she lives.

She’s laughing as he burns the rice, smoke curling up like incense. There’s a rhythm in the way she stirs the pot, a song in the sizzle and crackle of oil. The kitchen becomes a kind of sanctuary. Cluttered. Lived-in. Intimate.
He doesn’t remember learning to cook. But he remembers how she made it feel like love.
Every spill, every ruined dish became a shared story. A memory stitched into the quiet moments between them. The burnt rice becomes a symbol—not of failure, but of comfort. Of being seen in his imperfection and still being treasured.
He remembers the way she pointed to the sky one night, eyes full of stars, and told him to chase it. Told him he could.
He loved planes before he understood why.
But in the dream, it’s clear.
He loved them because she made him believe he could fly.
That he was brave enough. Strong enough.
Because once, in the fragile hours between fear and morning, she had been the one to shield him. To tell him he was more than the weight he carried. That being soft didn’t mean being weak. That courage wasn’t loud—it was the choice to rise again, even when broken.

And he hadn't seen it.

The fog has never lied. Not truly. It gave him comfort. Connection. Her.
But now it offers something else:
Truth.
Bit by bit.
She was there. She loved them. And then—something changed.
The question lingers like smoke in his lungs:
Why did she leave?
And why did they let her?
The fog returns, soft but sad.
The comfort remains. But so does the wound. Because something is coming.
And this time, he can’t afford to look away.

Emerging SARS-CoV-2 Resistance After Antiviral Treatment - Published Sept 26, 2024
Key Points Question Is there an increased frequency of SARS-CoV-2 antiviral resistance in individuals receiving antiviral therapy?
Findings In this cohort study with 156 participants, nirmatrelvir resistance mutations were detected more often in individuals who were treated with nirmatrelvir, especially those who were immunosuppressed, compared with untreated individuals. However, all mutations were present at relatively low frequencies, appeared transiently, and were unlikely contributors to instances of virologic rebound.
Meaning In this study, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 strains with resistance to nirmatrelvir after treatment was rare, irrespective of virologic rebound.
Abstract Importance Previous studies have identified mutations in SARS-CoV-2 strains that confer resistance to nirmatrelvir, yet how often this resistance arises and its association with posttreatment virologic rebound is not well understood.
Objective To examine the prevalence of emergent antiviral resistance after nirmatrelvir treatment and its association with virologic rebound.
Design, Setting, and Participants This cohort study enrolled outpatient adults with acute COVID-19 infection from May 2021 to October 2023. Participants were divided into those who received antiviral therapy and those who did not. The study was conducted at a multicenter health care system in Boston, Massachusetts.
Exposure Treatment regimen, including none, nirmatrelvir, and remdesivir.
Main Outcomes and Measures The primary outcome was emergent SARS-CoV-2 antiviral resistance, defined as the detection of antiviral resistance mutations, which were not present at baseline, were previously associated with decreased antiviral efficacy, and emerged during or after completion of a participant’s treatment. Next-generation sequencing was used to detect low frequency mutations down to 1% of the total viral population.
Results Overall, 156 participants (114 female [73.1%]; median [IQR] age, 56 [38-69] years) were included. Compared with 63 untreated individuals, the 79 who received nirmatrelvir were older and more commonly immunosuppressed. After sequencing viral RNA from participants’ anterior nasal swabs, nirmatrelvir resistance mutations were detected in 9 individuals who received nirmatrelvir (11.4%) compared with 2 of those who did not (3.2%) (P = .09). Among the individuals treated with nirmatrelvir, those who were immunosuppressed had the highest frequency of resistance emergence (5 of 22 [22.7%]), significantly greater than untreated individuals (2 of 63 [3.1%]) (P = .01). Similar rates of nirmatrelvir resistance were found in those who had virologic rebound (3 of 23 [13.0%]) vs those who did not (6 of 56 [10.7%]) (P = .86). Most of these mutations (10 of 11 [90.9%]) were detected at low frequencies (<20% of viral population) and reverted to the wild type at subsequent time points. Emerging remdesivir resistance mutations were only detected in immunosuppressed individuals (2 of 14 [14.3%]) but were similarly low frequency and transient. Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data analysis showed no evidence of increased nirmatrelvir resistance in the United States after the authorization of nirmatrelvir.
Conclusions and Relevance In this cohort study of 156 participants, treatment-emergent nirmatrelvir resistance mutations were commonly detected, especially in individuals who were immunosuppressed. However, these mutations were generally present at low frequencies and were transient in nature, suggesting a low risk for the spread of nirmatrelvir resistance in the community with the current variants and drug usage patterns.

I know I said that the "blorblos from the attic" won't be a thing but I just like to work with characters and analyse them. Therefore I will continue my journey on the "Star Trek characters ace people like" thing with Data this time.
Funnily, I don't think this will be the character I will have the most to say about this particular subject because there is almost nothing mirroring sexuality and romance in his development. It is not absent at all but this is just one point in many others. Maybe that's a part of why I liked him so much at the time. I was never found of the romantic affairs in series when they were too plot driven for a characters, because the conclusion is often the same : they overcome the difficulties and the reward is too often : kiss, bed, flesh. And I don't find it rewarding personally.
I don't mind when it happens, but keep it short and I will be fine. Make it long and I will began to feel like it is voyeurism. I don't mind romance and exploration of feelings in general - Data is more of this second part and the rare flesh moments are not "satisfying" for the character either. In that my little ace self can relate.
Note : I haven't seen Picard' series so my analysis doesn't cover eventual new interactions Data could have made after the older series.
Who is Data ?
Data is an android - basically a machine - kinda one of his kind. In reality there are more than one but they are all different. He was built and deprived of all emotions by design - another model with emotions programs went wrong - and Data is seeking to become more and more human.
In that he has a sort of Pinocchio syndrome.
At first I thought he was a substitute for a Spock like character. And he can be in several aspect : no emotions displayed, super strong and resistant compare to human, highly intelligent, used sometimes to mirror humanity contradictions in storytelling.
In a way he was but the development was different, and I enjoyed his journey. Spock had to deal with emotions. He was suppressing them. Data isn't. He cannot feel by design, and to the contrary of the vulcan, he wants to reach that.
He is making experience in every field he can imagine to understand how human work and emulate it, until he can feel. And the thing is, he is never discouraged by a failure, he is never tired of trying, because those are feelings he cannot have. So he is persevering tirelessly.
Sometimes those experiences lead to profond discussions, and put words on our own feelings or perceptions, but sometimes this is just cute.

I have to make a little side note here. Data is an interesting character with a very slow development towards his goal, but Brent Spiner who plays him, is fantastic. For various reasons, he had to play various characters in the show, sometimes alone facing himself, and it gives you his range, but what makes him Data is that weird uncanny valley he can pull out from nowhere.
Data is not unexpressive and will often display some accurate facial experessions in diverse situations. Basically, he will do in social interactions that need it. But this is also something that builds up with time, as he learns more about those interactions. In other case he can be unexpressive or emulate. And there are also his little head mouvements he does when Data computes that help bringing his not human nature. It looks like bird mouvements. There are many ways he brings that uncanny valley with him. The contrast can be disturbing and yet be funny sometimes, like here :

And that little extract will lead me you my next point. Because you can see in this sequence, Data is trying to learn to dance (for a wedding). There is absolutely nothing sexual involved with Beverly. She is friendly trying to help him. But in the final sequence, we can see him asking for a female dancer to practice and the computer generate a woman in a sexy outfit and sexy demeanours toward him, but Data doesn't care, he is here to learn to dance. He is not aroused by this woman as the show leads us to thing that it could be his reaction. Yes he is awkward then, but in all honesty, this has nothing to do with any sexual tension, and I find it very interesting that the point is elsewhere.
Data, sexuality and "feelings"
His journey is quite long and bumpy but very interesting, as he tries to integrate as much as he can of human behaviours. Sometimes, he would ask question to define things, like a child who is exploring is own self. The exploration of sentimentality, romance, liaisons etc comes like drops in the ocean of his questions about humans.
The sexual subjects are almost never in the equation of Data's humanity's quest.
For the sexual part, he is programmed to satisfy the sexual needs of an humanoid so he doesn't have to learn the technicalities, so to speak. What he lacks is the capacity to feel something for someone emotionally. He treats romance and everything that turns around it, like another social experiment.
It happens sometimes that someone is attracted to him and he is kissed. But he doesn't understand much of it.

At some point though, he formulates the wish to get involved in a relationship or to "procreate". That doesn't work very well each time, and the interesting things is that he allows us (viewers) to project feelings over something he doesn't feel at the time. The breakup. The loss of a child. Yet he expresses those things in his own ways. And his ways helps finding ours.
The case Jenna D'Sora
Data's issues about love and sexuality reside in lack of all emotions, not in specific triggers or any definitions of what that could represents for him, but some of his responses or interactions hit close to what I experience as an ace. While I do feel and am not responding as detached as he is, the awkwardness is the same. The conclusion of the story dedicated to that part of his development is failure, because the human counterpart didn't feel loved despite what he can offer. He accepts the failure as : "this is as far as I can get, this is beyond my grasp". Yep... Me too.

But the thing is, even if he wants to model his life into the social role humans display in majority, he never achieved that and he is well.
More interestingly, when he has finally a ship with programs to develop and explore emotions, he is not searching particularly for love. He has friendships he cherishes - especially with Geordy, Picard and Worf - who I will speak about later.
Despite his limitations, he understands the concept of love and the human need to seek for that. He is just not capable of such thing. He was also aware that his limitations would probably causing his partner emotional pain, which happens in the end, but she was aware of it too - they discussed it beforehand.
This relation is a total failure, yet, we can't say Data isn't capable of loving. He can't reprocicate the feeling but he shows some strong attachments.
The case Tasha Yar
I cannot speak about feelings, romance and everything for Data without mentioning her.
Very early on, on the show, they have a sexual affair. Tasha is like intoxicated when it happens and she doesn't want it to be something, so she made it clear to him when everything is back to normal. They had a normal working relationship after that. She dies later in the season.
Despite being asked to ignore what happened between them, for Data she was important. He always kept an holographic picture of her.

She is a precious memory of him and we will never know why and how it works for him. But she reappears sometimes like a reminder that : yes Data loved someone.
The case Spot
Yes Spot is Data's cat and no there is no sexual things here 😅. With him, he will have the same response we have to our pets. In a way, he empathised more with that cat in an organic way than with any other humanoids, while he didn't have his emotion ship.

He cares for him a lot, to the point that with his ship activated, he will cry of joy discovering him alive in the wreckage of the Enterprise after they crashed.
The Borg queen
The Borg queen might be the only one he felt attraction to. She goes dirty on him to gain his loyalty, offering him real skin and overloading him with new sensations while she blocked his emotions programs activated.

His desire for emotions is Data's weakness but he adapts quite quickly to a lot of it. Probably because he worked so hard before hand to understand things without being able to feel.
But Data's loyalty cannot be altered that easily when he experienced this kind of manipulation before, and he played the fool until he had the possibility to destroy the queen. He would tell Picard afterwrds that he was considering to accept her offer for 0.68 second, which is very long for him 😅.
Now this is about as far as it get in his exploration of love. What he will develop the most though is friendship. His nature has a tendancy to weird people out sometimes but people are often charmed by his candid way of thinking about trivial things for them.
Seeking for advice and frienship
When he doesn't grab a concept or he is enable to determine the good course of action, he often goes to his friends for help.
What I like in TNG is how patient everyone is and ready to give their best to help one another. It gives some nice discussion, on sometimes tough subjects.
To be fair, Data becomes friend with a lot of people and people around him adjust to his lack of emotions pretty well as they usually find his ways enough to empathise with him.
Each of his friend is very different or course and will give him different perspective on his problems.
From the relationships I like the most : Geordy is the bro, Picard a more father like figure, and Worf is more of the direct approach - no feelings gets in the way. Then, we have Deanna Troi and Guinan who are for me the two sides of the same coin for him.
Geordy and Worf
I put them together because with Data they share a common ground for my analysis : they have difficulties in their love affairs. Data we saw why just before. Geordy is married to his job and has difficulties to link with women. Worf is culturally different from the vast majority and it will take time for him to open up to interracial lovers.
For me, those two are his best pals, in the common sense. Geordy is the definition of his ultimate friend. They go through a lot together. He is openly friendly and emotional towards Data. And Data will help him in some difficult moment, showing trust when no-one does.

Worf is very different and their friendship is more in the Klingons ways. They have frictions sometimes but a huge respect for each other. And they can tell the truth bluntly when need be. There is no hiding things.
Although Data can be really random with him sometimes trying to experiment human relationships with him, and hilarity ensures 😅.

The case Picard
This is one of the most touching for me, because Picard has a real problem with children, but Data grows like the son he never had. They are friends but there is that profound link that build up with time. Data is loyal to Picard to great extend and vice versa. And there is that sacrifice tendency Kirk and Spock had, that link them.

The case Deanna Troi and Guinan
They are the neutral counselor in a way. They are not friend with Data the same way of a Geordy or a Picard but there is a connection. Data values their point of view and advices. And they both like him a lot.
Deanna is the kind of the opposite of Data in a way and their connection is slow but really rewarding to me.
I had some difficulties with her character during the series because the stories around her were often turned into weird kinks and sometimes disturbing subjects, that she recovers from too easily. But her character often help to show a different side of peoples, as she is the ship counsellor and sort of psychologist. From her race, she has empathic abilities that she uses to feel people emotions.
But with Data, there is nothing to read, yet he will ask her help to define some emotions from his camarades he is confused by, how to respond to it, what is the correct way of action. And she will push him to explore more abstract concepts.

I liked their time together because, at first, she was a bit guarded with him because as he has no emotions she can't read him, but she became one of the most invested in his emotional quest, and grew emotionally attached to him.
Guinan is an enigmatic character but she often has the insight that helps people when they need. Data values her judgement and will come sometimes for advices. She is good sport with him and participate in some of his experience, like trying to understand humour.
She is mostly helping people in their line of thoughts, digging a bit what they want and need to help them figure out the rest.
And this is what she does about is first love affair.

Conclusion :
I wrote way more than I intended lool. I love Data for his quest of humanity, helping decipher things on the way. And I recognise myself in a lot of his behaviour around love, thriving more in casual relationships and friendships than finding anything for more in love affairs. And the character delivers so many nuances that highlight the complexity of human relations and emotions.
