<Today’s CD> 재즈 뮤지션들은 요절한 사람들도 많지만, 장수한 사람들도 많다. 니콜라스 페이톤은 젊은 세대의 트럼펫터로 꽤 명성이 있으나, 나이답지 않게 뉴올리언즈 재즈를 계승하고 있어서 나이 드신 어르신 재즈맨들이 귀여워 하는 듯하다. 오늘의 이 앨범은 재즈 트럼펫의 옛사운드를 들려주는 최장수 트럼펫터 도크 치트햄이 91살에 손주같은 니콜라스 페이톤과 듀엣으로 제작한 작품이다. 1920년대부터 트럼펫터, 밴드 리더, 싱어등으로 장년간 활약했던 도크 치트햄은 자신의 멘토가 루이 암스트롱이라 말할 정도로 그를 좋아했고 뉴올리언즈 재즈를 잇는 재즈 뮤지션으로서 변함없는 존재감을 지니고 있었다. 피아노에는 버치 톰슨을 게스트로 하여 올드 재즈와 모던 재즈의 묘한 복합성을 표현하는 본 작품은 음악적인 의���로서도 깊은 맛을 지니지만, 재즈 역사의 한 페이지를 장식하는 멋진 신구세대의 뮤지션이 서로 깊은 애정을 갖고 콜래보한다는 점에서 남다른 의미가 있다. 재즈 스탠더드 넘버 위주의 곡 편성을 트럼펫터로서 두 사람이 해석해 내는지도 참으로 기대된다. 도크 치트햄은 이제 이 세상에 안계시지만, 하늘 나라에서 흐뭇하게 후배들의 재즈 연주를 들으며 기뻐하시지 않을지... #music#jazz#NewOrleans#trumpet#DocCheatham#NicholasPayton#ButchThompson#verve#1997(Edogawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan에서)
