it  hadn't  been  that  long  ago  that  nick  had  been  sharing  his  tidings  about  the  future  of  red  creek  ,  warnings  of  what  was  to  come  if  they  did  nothing  .  it  seemed  that  people  were  suspicious  of  him  ,  wondering  what  he  was  up  to  or  disregarding  him  ...  but  the  proof  was  in the  rather  spectacular  pudding  that  had  been  served  up  that  day  .  nick  thought  whoever  was  behind  it  was  quite  iconic  when  it  came  to  the  art  of  distraction  . he  doesn't  see  the  other  at  first  ,  stepping  out  into  the  cool  ,  on  the  outskirts  of  the  bar  that  was  attracting  quite  a  crowd  .  people  needed  alcohol  to  get  them  through  what  they  had  seen  but  nick  ...  he  had  to  be  careful  not  to  misstep  ,  one  drink  could  quite  easily  lead  to  something  altogether  more  dangerous  .  perhaps  sobriety  is  an  advantage  as  he  narrows  in  ,  "  were  you  coming  to  get  a  drink  to  take  the  edge  off  ...  evade  the  upcoming  woes  ?  "  gesturing  back  towards  the  door  which  swings  slowly  on  hinges  as  another  departs  .  "  it  might  be  time  to  reassess  my  bone  ,  "  words  humorous  ,  quirk  of  an  eyebrow  .

a very pissed off rant because some people still think this is a romance centered story

okay everyone ik people are loving the romance angle a lot in these books, and people on reddit are like "stop policing us!! some people read it for romance!! we don't have to adhere to your rules!! okay so 1. shut the fuck up and 2. this book is not romantasy. it is a YA fantasy series, it is bree's journey, her story, her life has romance so we get to see romance.

if this book were romantasy, or like even just with a major major focus on romance, i could understand dropping the book for a love interests' appearance/disappearance or not giving it stars because it is a romance book and it failed to make you feel romance worthy. but it is not a romance book. romance is a subplot. even the fucking tag is after young adult. if it were a proper romance you would know!! this is a romance subplot!! this is a sort of coming of age typa story it is bree's story can we please stop fucking pretending that the romance is the only thing here??

ik we love a dark-haired brooding character i love him too okay but is it that fucking hard to understand that this is not about him?? this is why reading comprehension and literacy empathy is important it doesn't take people a moment to toss bree away because oooh white boys.

im not saying the books are perfect, yes there are flaws, but if the only flaw that you can find is that one white guy isn't mentioned or mentioned too much in a black girl's story then you need to put the damn book down and go back to your romantasy section. this is not a story for you and I'm tired of people posting "uNpOpUlAr oPiNiOnS" and it's just plain bullshit.

i'm rereading the legendborn cycle in preparation for oathbound and have some thoughts about nick after legendborn.

i didn't like him the first time around, but as a firm breesel shipper i wanted to take my shipper glasses off and give him an actual shot.

verdict: i kinda hate him more

sel is 100% right. nick is spoiled and selfish as hell. he doesn't give a shit about anything but bree and his feelings and it shows. i don't think he had any obligation to the taking on his position as arthur's scion, but if he doesn't want it then he cannot throw it around when it benefits him.

he just comes of as some oblivious dummy, and on occasion i believe he's absolutely blind to the struggles bree faces not only as a black woman, but as a black woman within the historically white Order. putting her on the spot in a room full of people who view her as an outsider with absolutely no hesitation or concern is dangerous and he doesn't seem to give a shit.

also, i despise what he does to sel. i understand that what sel did was shitty, not disputing that. but attacking someone who can't fight back and explicitly state he did it because he can't fight back? fuck this guy.

undoubtedly  ,  they  knew  each  other  .  it  was  impossible  not  to  ,  which  gave  them  both  ammunition  and  opinions  of  the  other  .  nick  ,  willing  to  say  anything  to  anybody  when  it  came  to  trying  to  get  his  own  way  .  the  only  thing  that  was  different  about  this  was  that  somehow  nick  did  seem  to  find  himself  on  the  right  side  of  morality  -  it  was  possible  that  had  never  happened  before  .  for  the  first  time  ,  he  was  spurning  on  the  community  to  take  a  stand  for  good  and  as  bizarre  as  it  was  ,  it  didn't  seem  to  be  a  double  edged  sword  for  those  he  lured  in  .

"  it  must  be  nice  to  sit  there  with  your  moral  high  ground  over  being  the  one  to  sensationalise  the  brutal  murders  that  take  place  here  because  it's  good  for  business  .  fuck  the  people  who  are  suffering  ,  huh  ,  bash  ?  "  raising  an  invisible  glass  to  cheers  at  the  prospect  .  as  if  there  was  anything  better  or  more  correct  about  sitting  back  and  not  even  trying  to  use  your  journalistic  powers  to  do  anything  positive  other  than  spin  shitty  headlines  .  nick  thought  ,  if  he  was  in  that  position  ,  he  had  a  few  stories  that  he  would  prefer  to  write  .  some  homegrown  truths  he  wouldn't  mind  outing  .  it  excited  him  .

IF BASH CANNON WAS CAPABLE of keeping his damn mouth shut, he'd probably have a lot less battle wounds to attend to. still, he never quite learned the lesson. it was hard to take the other seriously with the spastic range of emotions, but mostly colored in red. ❝ the difference is i'm not trying to solve the murder , i'm trying to make headlines. which i did. what exactly are succeeding by yelling in a library of all places about this for ? least go to the sheriff's if you're trying to clear your conscience instead of making a scene , ❞ he accused with a quick tongue, hues still fixed on the other, but relaxed in his seat. it was strange, his sudden outburst. last he could recall, he's only seen nick and kirby nearly take each other's head off.
