Man in a Suitcase: Night Flight to Andorra (1.30, ITC, 1968)
"You know we're not in this for kicks by now, don't you?"
"I heard a story about Buck, whoever Buck might be, something about taking me behind the sheds and murdering me."
"Ha. Well, old Buck watches a lot of TV, ma'am."
#man in a suitcase#night flight to andorra#classic tv#1968#reed de rouen#jan read#freddie francis#richard bradford#peter woodthorpe#zia mohyeddin#luanshya greer#ewan hooper#edward underdown#carlos pierre#robert crewdson#peter swanwick#fred beauman#ricardo montez#charles laurence#nita lorraine#and so McGill bows out. this was probably never intended as a series finale (it was 28th in production‚ with 1.26 The Revolutionaries the#final episode shot) but it inadvertently acts as a kind of unofficial coda on the series; McGill is finally back doing the work he was#trained for‚ albeit in an unofficial capacity‚ putting together a team for a heist on behalf of the uk government. much of the exposition#is handwaved through (we never really know how McGill came to be doing this job‚ nor why he's explicitly working for the uk when the US are#also a concerned party) but there's much to enjoy in the classic heist setup of a band of uneasy allies working to their own agendas. of#these‚ the late Mohyeddin is the standout as the sole likeable member of the gang; so charming in fact that even when he pulls a knife on#an innocent girl‚ he manages to do it in such a way that he still seems perfectly reasonable and friendly. de Rouen had cowritten the only#real dud in the series‚ 1.22‚ but this is a much better script (and he bagged himself a supporting role into the bargain). Woodthorpe was a#theatre legend‚ having originated parts in both Waiting for Godot and The Caretaker‚ but he was also an infrequent supporting actor in#brit horror films and had already worked with director Francis on three pictures (inc the excellent The Skull for Amicus)

I wrote this on Twitter but I have two followers so I wanted to try here.
It was the middle of the summer when Steve and Robin ran away. It was unexpected, but it just happened, Hawkins was an unbearable nightmare on their lives and it had never felt like home, so, one night both grabbed all their belongings, stuffed them on Steve’s car and drove to Dustin and Max’s place to say their last goodbyes.
Both kids cried a little but the eye bags on Robin and Steve’s face stopped them from begging them to stay. They knew it would kill them.
Robin read her whole old diary to Steve in their way to Indianapolis, translating all the bits she had written in other languages and laughing every once in a while over how in love was she with Tammy. All of her old plans to run away to Europe were there, she had a whole trip planned, so when Steve and Robin entered the airport and saw that the first flight available was to Lyon both bought their tickets with their own savings without hesitation. About five hours later Robin and Steve’s parents arrived to the airport to find Steve’s car parked between the hundred of cars of other travelers and the little boards with all the flights tagged as deployed. They were gone.
Robin did all the talking at first, Steve just followed her holding her hand and eating whatever Robin had managed to fit in their budget, the hostel they were staying was horrible and they didn’t know anyone, but they were free. The croissants tasted amazing, the people didn't even paid attention to them and the streets were beautiful at night, so they stayed there as long as their money allowed them.
Steve studied harder than he had ever done it to learn to move on his own, he was used to be alone, learning in a new place to do the same wouldn't be hard, and he had Robin with him now, he wouldn't be alone anymore.
Sometimes he would order by himself his food, or pay at the grocery store, sometimes some locals would tell him little grammar corrections and he would feel embarrassed, going back to his ‘stupid self persona’, that stigma that everyone had of him, but everyone was so nice, they understood him, they made the effort to understand him unlike other people.
The day that everything changed on Steve was when a tourist asked him to take a pictures of her in French and he understood her. He felt so warm over the fact that people didn’t know who he was, and if he was capable or not, they asked him because they saw him as someone who could help, and Steve felt useful without having to risk his life for once. Steve couldn’t be happier.
By the time their old savings were running low, Robin had managed to get some tutoring jobs for kids and Steve had landed a job at a local restaurant as chef. A secret of Steve was that he was amazing at cooking. A friend of him had got him the job at one of his friend’s father restaurant.
So they saved money again and by the time two years had gone since they had left Hawkins they left Lyon now, jumping this way around most of the most touristic cities in Europe.
About ten years later they had already visited (and worked, and made friends and even fucked) France, Italy, Andorra, Portugal, and Spain, settling on the last one.
It was around 3 in the morning when Max called (because time difference) and Max laughed loudly when Steve answered in Spanish.
By the time they settled on Spain Steve spoke a good chunk of French, pieces of Italian and Portuguese and he had also learned Spanish and some Catalan, something he never imagined he could be able to do . Forced proximity to a language was a real thing. Robin on the other hand was on another level, excelling all the languages from the places they had live in, but that wasn’t anything new. Steve was more than thankful because he wasn’t sure he could’ve done it without Robin.
Max allowed both Robin and Steve rant a little about their new lives in Spain now that they were awake, she felt a little guilty over waking them up (mostly because the hadn't had the chance to talk a lot lately). After hearing how well was doing Robin at this company she was working as a translator and how nice were the kids she was tutoring and how Steve had been very stressed the last week hiring cooks for his restaurant, Max finally invited them to Will's first gallery.
It was no surprised for any of them that Will was already hosting a gallery of his art but both Robin and Steve felt suddenly very aware over the fact that it had been ten years since they left and last saw all of the party, they all had graduated now and were working their new paths.
They accepted the invitation gladly. Some vacations would be good from their new agitated life in Europe.
Max of course didn’t tell anyone other than Dustin.
Around a two weeks later when they arrived they decided to visit a gay bar that Max told them about the day she called them in the middle of the night claiming she had just gone the day before (both Steve and Robin had found it odd but the kids were odd anyways so they didn’t question it)
After leaving all their luggage in their hotel and heading to the bar they waited around twenty minutes before they could finally enter, and as soon as they did it they started to fight over who was going to get drunk, because of course Steve claimed it was Robin’s turn to take care of him because he took care of her after that party they had in Catalonia, but Robin reminded Steve that she had to run his restaurant a whole day (which was horrible because Robin can’t handle the stress of such a crowded place) that time Steve had been hungover after a party in Barcelona. So the fight keeps going on and reaches a bartender who is laughing excitedly at the sight of two (still) sober friends throwing in their faces the times they had to take care of the other.
So the bartender promises he will be back and leaves still amused because he has to serve more drinks, that's his work, the thing is he had to serve specifically Nancy and Eddie’s drinks who happen to in the same bar together (after forming a very nice friendship discovered by their mlm and wlw solidarity). After all, after Steve and Robin left they were all they had before moving to Massachusetts, Nancy going to college and Eddie working around in the music scene that Salem and Boston had.
Hence why when Steve screamed that he was not going to drink soda and sparkling water when there was Tequila in front of him both Nancy and Eddie turned to find their old friends, because they could recognize those voices everywhere. They could even after ten years. Yet no words came out of their mouths, they were both gaping at a loss of words.
Mostly because Steve looked so different now, he’s wearing glasses but they suit him amazing, and he has a new haircut that enhances his jawline not to leave behind the fact that Eddie can tell Steve is still in very good shape even from the distance, and it bothers Eddie, it really does, because who gave Steve the right to look so good even after all these years. He was supposed to be the guy who peaks in high school and then has his downfall, but if anything, he looked better than he ever did (something the old 21 year old Eddie would find impossible because Harrington was already the definition of perfection back in the day). He is glowing, Steve was genuinely shining, he looked like a whole different person.
And Robin, she has long hair now, it goes all the way to the curve of her waist and Nancy tries to focus on that detail but she can't, she can't do that because Robin is laughing and smiling when Steve tries to reach the Tequila bottle and Robin is fighting him to not do it, but even when Steve is next to her, she looks like she’s the only one in the room, or at least the only person Nancy wants to pay attention, and Nancy isn’t sure if this is how she remembered Robin ten years ago.
And Steve let’s go of the tequila bottle when he makes eye contact with Eddie, Eddie Munson, who is standing a few meters away from them, wearing his classic leather jacket and vest combo. He looks taller but Steve is almost sure is because he’s wearing boots. His hair is even longer now but Steve can’t tell how longer because it’s tied on ponytail that allows Steve to see all the new piercings Eddie has gotten, it also allows Steve to see his neck and for some reason that gives him a chill. So Steve froze, because he remembered wishing to meet a girl with the same facial features that Eddie had back in the day when he didn’t knew some things about him. He knows things about him know, and Eddie is there.
Robin doesn’t get any time to scold Steve for letting the bottle fall because she finds herself in the same situation when Nancy, next to Eddie, smirks at her. And Robin feels like she 17 again because that’s the same smirk Robin remembers ranting Steve about how she was tired of liking people who would never like her back (the same night that they decided to ran away) Nancy being one of them.
When times moves as it should once again the bartender comes to the rescue and finally catches the bottle, speaking at the same time, bringing them back from the shock.
"Little gift from them—" he mutters placing in front of Robin and Steve two shots of tequila as he nodded towards their staring opponents.
It tastes sour, Steve and Robin immediately remembered why they hadn’t drank tequila in a long while, the Barcelona party had been almost a year ago. Exchanging a witty look they both wondered if the fight that they just had was worth it because they no longer enjoyed alcohol like they did in Italy and France, at the beginning of their adventure. A not so proud moment of them.
With a loud clash on the counter they left their caballitos behind and decided to reach Eddie and Nancy. And it’s awkward, it’s always awkward, mostly because Nancy and Eddie were still hurting a little over the fact that they left, as much as they didn’t want to admit it. And Robin and Steve are scared, because they know it wasn’t the best way to leave, so most of their polite chat comes in short sentences and whispers, which isn’t good because the music is loud and it’s actually hurting Steve who has to lower the volume of his hearing aid, something only Eddie notices but is scared to ask.
But they try, and Nancy as bold as she always is takes the first step and invites Robin to dance. And they disappear in the crowd, Robin giving a slight nudge to Steve to push him to try, but nothing comes on. Steve tried first and asked Eddie if he preferred Italian or French food because he could cook any of them if he ever wanted but Eddie hasn’t tried any of them. Then Eddie gives it a chance and asks Steve what does he think about the recent Grammy nominations but Steve is lost because he barely knows what music is trending, most of the time the ambience of his restaurant is in charge of the managers. So they stop.
Steve doesn’t try again but attracts Eddie’s attention when he laughs after seeing a girl wearing a Padres shirt in the bar because he’s a Mets fan. And Eddie just jokes that he’s actually a Padres fan (he doesn’t know much about baseball but Wayne is a Padres fan and he is one by inheritance) so Steve is about to apologize when a guy interjects and claims he’s a Mets fan too.
And Steve feels good to find another Mets fan, but this wasn’t the circumstances he wanted to find one, and he doesn’t have the heart to cut him or politely decline him because he hasn’t done this in a while, the restaurant consumes most of his time and he already had a few ‘friends’ who he hung with, so the guy just keeps going over the season and the players. But he stops, he stops when Eddie throws his arm around Steve and pulls him a little closer to him. The poor ginger just stumbled a few times before he went back to his friends a little embarrassed.
"Figured you needed help" eases in Eddie and Steve smiles, genuinely. And that’s it, that was the breaking point they needed, because after that none of them can shut up, and neither separate, because unconsciously (totally consciously) Steve grabbed Eddie by the waist and pulled him closer too.
So when Nancy and Robin laugh seeing them Steve can’t help to roll his eyes sensing his best friend eyes, but he doesn’t care because he feels okay like this. And he can also see the way Nancy’s hand never left the curve of Robin’s back as she guided her dancing. He can also tell there is a slight blush under her freckles, and they’re both sarcastic and know each other too well so the next morning is gonna be embarrassing for both of them, but that doesn’t feel important right now.
The night goes on, at some point Eddie asks if Steve wants to leave and they do, about four hours later he arrives at his hotel only to find Robin arriving at the same time and they both laugh over the fact that they had only come back to the hotel to not worry the other. They both fall asleep before they can tease the other.
The next morning Eddie and Nancy are waiting for them in front of the hotel.
Both Max and Dustin laugh maliciously and high-five each other when Steve and Eddie arrive together and Steve is wearing Eddie’s leather jacket that he lent him last night when he drove him back to the hotel. Nancy and Robin are just behind, Nancy helping Robin to do the tie she had completed her outfit with.
So when Mike ask Max if the bar he had recommended her (which turns out it’s a bar the 4 eldest know) was fun, she doesn’t know what to say, because she didn’t go. But she smiles.
"Yeah, it was pretty good" jokes Eddie answering Mike’s question while side eyeing Steve who just rolls his eyes and gives both Max and Dustin a we'll-talk-about-it-later look, even though he doesn’t have any complaints.
The day goes on, and the gallery is a success, they see the rest of The Party, and enjoy gathering with them, Steve and Robin try not to cry but every once in a while Eddie and Nancy catch their eyes looking glassy because they missed so much. But at the same time, both Nancy and Eddie notice the way Robin and Steve move, and they see the freedom in them, there is no hint of the fear they had in Hawkins. They also reach for the other constantly just for simple touches of reassurance and they can both see that if they hadn’t left, they wouldn’t be here today, so this feeling of hurt leaves both of them.
When the gallery ends, both Nancy and Eddie invite Robin and Steve to a double date everyday of the week before they have to go back to Spain.
And they need to figure out things because they’re living in different countries, and they all need to meet again because they’re not the teenagers they were, but they feel like they have time, unlike in the past, this time they feel and know there is a future, so they’ll work on it.
I hope this is well written because my wrist gave up almost at the end.

It sucks ass to be from a city in the forgotten and empty part of Spain, because going and coming back is a Royal pain in the ass.
The Going Journey
I don't live in one of the big German cities, so the airport only connects with, you guessed it, the mediterranean coast, the Canary islands and Mallorca, so I have to move to one of the bigger airports, which means that I have to trust
Stage 1: The Fucking Deutsche Bahn.
The happenings during the Pandemic have fucked DB to the point that every other train is late. Even trains that start at the spot you take it, start late sometimes. I have to trust these machines to be at least 2h early to the flight departure time and it's a lot of trust to put in this god damned company. This is the most anxiety inducing step of the going journey because I have usually to take a regional train and then an ICE, and if the regio is late, the whole trip falls apart. My heart is taking the tension hardly. Regardless, if everything goes well, I arrive with enough time for checking in to
Stage 2: The God Damned International Flight to Spain.
Connections of the regions of Spain with international airports are very different from one region to another. You see, if you trace a diagonal line that crosses Spain from Andorra to the bottom of Portugal, the southeastern half, is super well connected to international airports (Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Malaga, Mallorca, Sevilla, Madrid for example), but the northwestern half is... not (Madrid, Bilbao, Asturias in the summer sometimes). So, I cannot go directly to my hometown, I have to be damned by the stupid centralist design of the transport network and go through Madrid. Once there, it comes the last part of the journey,
Stage 3: The Bus/Train Home.
This stage is usually fine in terms of timing because luckily the trains and buses are on time. This is just loooooooong. If I'm feeling loaded of cash and planning, I could take an AVE to my hometown, but I'm not usually, so is either bus or slow train. Fine. I can take it. For now, because I'm not getting any younger.
Now I'm in my hometown, trip's done. The whole thing took like 19 hours, but it was fine. I had to spend 5 hours in Madrid and saw some friends I had not seen in person in a long time in the meantime, so, fine, I'll buy.
The problem comes with
The Journey Back
because, yes, it seems simple enough to do the same thing backwards, and yes, it sucks that I have to eat again the long, LONG, trip in
Stage 4: The Train/Bus to Madrid
and it sucks that I have to depend on that stupid city for
Stage 5: The International Flight back to Germany
But those steps are somewhat reliable. The bus will be on time, the flight will arrive on time or only slightly late. My problem is with fucking DB, because the trains later in the day are ALWAYS LATE. The last time I has to wait 2 hours in the airport, that became 3+ because the fucking train was more than an hour late. Then, of course, missed my connection to the regional to take me home and had to ask a friend for help getting home (He's a lovely guy, I love my homie so much, I got him cheese for christmas). Total time of the joke was 20+ hours that should've been noticeably less.
The points of this story are 2:
Fucking Deutsche Bahn, lately it sucks ass so much.
This whole bullshit of travelling and transports would be much better if train and bus companies would still have regular nocturnal trips. The time on trains and buses could be spent at night, when I can sleep, instead of wasting whole days fearing getting stuck in some middle city because the connection with the last train of the day missed.
I hate travelling in scales, that's the gist of it

wow i have so much respect, how did it happened? u just ate everything?
oh wow ok sit down children it’s Story Time
the first time was at a hot pot restaurant and they have a thing where if you go on your bday w your company, you eat free (and we all know what a hoe i am for Free Food™️) anyways the long and short of it was i ate....9? 10? plates of beef tripe, duck blood, and fish tofu bc im also a protein hoe (vegan vegetarians look away) bc ofc im gonna indulge on my bday and basically the waiters were all like The Fuck?? and kindly asked us to leave and heavily implied I should not be brought along
the second time i went to this spanish french fusion restaurant along the pyrenees with my parents bc we were going snowboarding in andorra to celebrate my parents’ 20th anniversary and i was a Starving Middle Schooler so i basically.....ate like 2 trays of paella and creme brûlée? and both my parents, bless their hearts, taking turns to feed me off their plates so it’s not so obvious but like we were the only ones there idk who they were trying to fool anyways the owner came out and started crying and tldr we are banned from a small buffet in the outskirts of andorra
third time it was the hotel continental breakfast at this fancy ass hotel (bc our flight got cancelled bc of....a snowstorm? or was it bc a bankruptcy? an earthquake??? and basically there were a bunch of post tsa passengers who had no where to go and no where to stay and so we all had a complimentary night in a 5 star hotel) and me being me, basically cleared the entire fruit and french toast tray within an hour and the hotel waitresses were like we have other guests to serve? and im like ur a 5 star restaurant with a two story continental buffet and literally 5 other trays of the exact same thing? im also ur guest? also i didn’t just hog the entire tray i took portions like the civilized human that i am? do you know how much energy i have expended constantly getting up for more food bc i didn’t want to look like a pig? fuck you anyways tldr; the four seasons in hangzhou hates me

Lis had used the flight over, long as it was, to sort out her shit. She couldn’t be falling all over Stella again, not until she was sure the other would help France and Foix. Not just Andorra. It was a dangerous game, one Arnauld wouldn’t be easily convinced by. And Lis was aware the second they passed the first step Lis would not be able to simply turn back. She couldn’t deal with losing her again. She needed to take a full step back and keep it profess- Her private pep talk stopped in its track as she saw the girl in question. Of course, Stella wouldn’t make it easy. She knew the game too. “Hey,” Lis said clearing her throat and looking away. The rest off her mind was blank and it was annoying her so she continued to look anywhere but at Stella after the first quick look. “Nice night.” she mumbled “Clear.”

I now want some headcanons about Modern AU Pirate Mechanic like, they could be so damn hot 😍
BLESS YOU NONNY THIS IS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO ME ALRIGHT STRAP IN FRIENDS THIS IS ALMOST 2K AND IT’S JUST HOW THEY MEET
First thing first, modern AU Zeke has Jordan Bolger’s accent. I need Raven to hear his voice before she sees him, think damn, then turn around and not be disappointed (if you haven’t heard his voice, let me bless you today) Also it’s about to be (kind of?) a college AU so hope that’s cool?
SCENE 1: a hackathon, an annual competition hosted at the USNA; Raven is repping MIT and when she walks in, people start elbowing each other, pointing at her. That’s THE Raven Reyes. She’s won the last three years. CIA is looking for her once she graduates, but she’s not really the desk job sort of girl. Did you see her bike? She built it in her spare time, completely from scrap, refurbished it from an 80s model. She’s legend.
She smiles to herself, flips her hair a bit, stares down the competition she knows, and walks over to her seat, texting Clarke that it’s too easy with these nerds.
The competition starts and of course, Raven is nothing but cool. She’s on top of her game, and is just about to push her latest update when her screen flickers. She freezes. Everyone else’s does too, but then the screens go back to the normal display and everyonebreathes a sigh of relief, going on. Raven narrows her eyes and opens another browser, just playing out a hunch… nobody notices that she’s left her main console open, that she’s working in another command center, but everybody notices when she pulls her legs off the desk in front of her. Her lips are pursed but her eyes are alight with a challenge.
Minutes pass and she leans forward, fingers flying. She types a few morelines, mutters ‘boom’, then leans under her desk and yanks out thecable. Her screen goes dark and everybody looks around in confusion. She grabs a pen and pencil that were on the desk, scribbles a couple of lines on the scratch paper provided, and walks over to the moderators’ desk, setting the paper onto it. “That’s an ip address, somewhere in the UK,” she says, pointing, “they hacked the mainframe, they can see all of our screens, and they’re pulling all the code everyone is writing and feeding it nicely onto this,” she taps the paper again, “site; he’s blasting it out online. I don’t write for free, so I dropped a virus in his system. You can track that here,” she taps one last time, before pulling back and sticking her hands in the pockets of her jeans. “It’s pulling everything it can from his machine. Once the upload is complete, it’ll fry his drive.” She turns from the desk, strides out of the room. It’s completely silent, then everyone else starts pulling their cables too.
They call off the competition; nobody wants to talk about how someone calling themselves The Acolyte managed to get onto the server that’s encrypted with the same security as most of the branches of the US government. They ask how Raven was able to find their hacker, since that means she’d have to access the same server, and do it without Uncle Sam or The Acolyte knowing about it, and she cocks an eyebrow at them. “Ye of little faith,” she shakes her head, then calls the airline to move her flight up a couple of hours.
SCENE 2: bellarke house party. Raven doesn’t often go into Boston but she makes an exception for her friends’ house warming. It’s a gorgeous brownstone, with Clarke’s avant-garde pieces hanging throughout, and a dark library for all of Bellamy’s books. The house is BRIMMING with people, and Raven smiles to herself, happy that her friends have so many people who want to celebrate them.
The night goes on and people are weaving in and out of the narrow hallways and the lights are dim and she’s eavesdropping near the fireplace, listening to some guy with a really lovely British accent talk about a solo motorcycle trip he took across Europe. She’s laughing a bit to herself—come on, does he really expect them to believe he made it from Madrid to Andorra in 5 hours? —when someone trips and someone else moves to avoid their drink, and then someone else steps into her. She’s sure they didn’t mean to, but they hit her left knee just right and she’s falling when someone catches her.
Strong arms are at her elbows and when she turns to thank whoever caught her, she doesn’t recognize him. He has a jawline she could cut herself on, gorgeous brown eyes and an amazing mouth that just happens to be turned up in a bit of a smirk when he realizes she’s looking. “You alright?” he asks easily, and she realizes that this is the renegade biker and his voice suits him. But she doesn’t like to be caught off guard and she especially doesn’t like it when it’s because of her leg so she pulls her arms back, nods curtly, and says “It’s 609 kilometers from Madrid to Andorra; does your bike have wings?” and then he really grins and she can’t help herself, but that’s a pretty sight.
He pulls her into the group conversation, and Raven likes the light rise and fall of his voice. She also likes the relaxed way he’s standing, the way he fills up the corner of the room, the way he tells stories and they way he seems to be noticing everyone around him. He’s smart, and it’s a lazy kind of intelligence, where people might not assume itwhen they meet him, but that’s an advantage. She can tell, because she gets his humor. He’ll say something to the side, mutter it, and look over at her in surprise when she snorts, because she heard it, and was thinking it. He’s not used to someone catching it, and Raven’s amused by that.
At some point, he pushes the sleeves of his jacket up his forearm, and she notices the tattoo just under his elbow. She asks him about the bird there and he shrugs, saying it reminds himof this line from a poem, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before, that he heard when he was in primaryschool, and how it stuck with him, and whenever he sees the ink, it reminds him to venture, never settle. He adds that it’s by this guy Edgar Allen Poe, called The Raven, and she realizes he’s either the boldest person she’s met, or he truly doesn’t know who she is. Either way, the next time someone pushes into someone else, and the room shifts to readjust, she steps closer to him.
She leaves with him. Is okay with him not knowing her name, okay because look at him, and he’s looking at her like he’s thinking the same, and after the disaster that was the hackathon, she could use a break. She’s not usually one for hookups, but then again she’s never met a British guy with eyes that are as quick as hers, and hands that feel like fire on her skin, and a voice that sends shivers through her. He’s careful of her leg and he keeps checking that she’s okay and when she falls apart, the awed expression on his face sends a jolt of emotions through her that she wasn’t expecting. She lets herself fall asleep in his bed, his hand running through her hair and hers tracing the ink on his arm. She’s tempted to ask about the other tattoos, but she doesn’t.
She wakes at the crack of dawn, like she always does, slips around the room to grab her clothes while he’s still waking up. It’s not awkward, but she thinks they both know that this is it, and not to make a big deal out of it. But as he makes her some coffee, the picture of domesticity in his kitchen with sweatpants around his hips and his face still half asleep, she finds herself wishing that maybe it could be more.
But she has school and she assumes he has a life to get back to, so she plants a chaste kiss on his pretty mouth, leaves the coffee on the table, and lets herself out.
The next weekend, Clarke asks her at brunch, eyes laughing and expression telling, if she and Zeke got along as well as she had predicted. It takes Raven a minute to connect the dots that her hot hookup was the ex-RAF pilot that Harper had met when she was overseas, and that she and Clarke had been trying to sether up with for forever (”seriously, Rey, he might be the only guy ever who’s on your level”). But she dunks some more sugar into her coffee, rolls her eyes and says that she didn’t really get to talk with him—it’s true, they really didn’t talk much—but that that’s probably a good thing, since she doesn’t go for guys who think that being on her level is a competition. Clarke mutters that sometimes someone really is just that perfect for you, and Raven takes the opportunity to divert her friend to her boyfriend, which Clarke happily bites at. She’s easily distracted when it comes to him.
Classes resume and Raven is disappointed in herself. She doesn’t let guys get under her skin, no matter how gorgeous they are, or how well they can handle a Ducati, but here she is, wondering what brown eyes is doing with his week.
She gets a call from Annapolis on Wednesday morning: they found the hacker. Well, sort of. Turns out, The Acolyte had a couple pet viruses of his own, and whenever his machine went down, they backfired on thesource. He lost everything, sure, but he’d gotten halfway through the mainframe of the hackathon before they caught him. And now he had a firewall set up, locking them out of the system and him in and, they were embarrassed to ask this, but would it be possible for Raven to take a look…
She does. Rolls her neck and sitsdown at the computer they give her in a room that isn’t supposed to exist. She’s slipped in through a backdoor and she whistles in admiration as she has to work her way through three more layers. It’s sophisticated stuff. Flashy, a bit much for her taste, but excellence can afford elegance. You can tell a lot about a developer by how they write code, and The Acolyte is no amateur. She’s surprised: usually hackers like this use their skill to steal or blackmail. This guy, he just seems like he’s trying to prove a point. But he’s protecting something.
Three hours in, she finds it. He hacked the competition because there was a backdoor through the USNA server into a subset of DACA records. The administrators behind her are getting nervous—it’s fair, Raven figures, they can’t read a thing on her screen, and she’s been focused pretty intently for the last half hour—but she doesn’t cue them in. Because, after all that effort, he’d just changed the deportation date for a couple hundred kids. Given them a chance to stay in the states, extend their future. Raven bites her lip. She thinks for a millisecond, then she changes her strategy. She still takes down the firewall, still wipes his drive. But she erases The Acolyte from the code, and publishes the code with the authority of one of the men behind her. The Acolyte is out, but his changes are in, and locked. And she left him a message.
She doesn’t know if he’ll show, but a week later, she’s back in Boston, waiting at the Common. She leans against one of the pillars, looking down at the Brewer Fountain. Just as her watch shows 4pm she straightens, not believing her eyes. But sure enough, she recognizes the broad shoulders and jawline of the man casually holding a rosary—she thought she was clever— and pacing back and forth in front of the fountain, looking around curiously. And as she goes down to meet him, she finds she’s smiling, wondering if maybe Harper and Clarke were on to something.
“Zeke Shaw,“ she says when she gets closer, and he turns, recognizing her voice. A couple different emotions run across his face, then he laughs, his hand coming up to cover his mouth as he steps towards her.
“Are you kidding? I was up against Raven Reyes?“
“You’re lucky, I went easy on you.“
He snorts. “You wiped my hardrive.”
“You crashed my competition.“
His eyes are laughing and he lifts his chin at her. “Come on, that wasn’t a competition for you.”
He’s right, and her smile stretches. “Rarely is.”
He stares at her for a long moment, admiration mixed with humor in his eyes. Then he shakes his head. “Now that, I believe.”

I finally got to see Szilvi’s house in Austria AND kick off the ski season with her and Stu. HAPPY FIRST WEEKEND OF 2019!
Szilvi picked me up from Munich late on Friday, she and Stu were driving down from the Netherlands and we wanted to get to her parents home in Reutte that evening to avoid the snow and be able to spend a solid day Saturday skiing. Success on one front, the snow was WILD on Saturday and traffic was jammed on all roads in and out of the valley. On the other front... we slept until 1 on Saturday thanks to being up so late driving the night before!
Luckily, even though we overslept by a lot, there wasn’t enough snow that they closed the hills and i fit perfectly into Szilvi’s mom’s skis so I was able to borrow a pair instead of taking a lot of time to get fitted and rent skis at the hill.
It took a run or two to get back the feel of skiing and it was a bit blustery up there, lots of snow in our faces but it was SO fun. Plus, with so much snow almost each run we were skiing on virgin snow! And good practice for the big ski weekend with my friends from Helsinki - we are going to Andorra in February.
In the evening we had dinner and completed a personalized puzzle with Szilvi’s parents. Such a cozy time with good people!
On Sunday it was STILL snowing, traffic was STILL backed up, and the train headed to the most direct town back to Munich was closed leaving from Reutte station! I didn’t know if I’d make it back to Munich to catch my Finland flight. I wanted to be in time to great Tom or even go to work on Monday (not to mention I didn’t want to have to buy another flight). Luckily though, I’d arrived at the station early enough that I could go on the route that was open and get to Munich from that next town. I made it to my flight and back to Finland with no problems after that.

Barcelona and the Andorran Pyrenees
We arrived in Barcelona on a rainy morning after a quick flight from Lisbon. Austin, Ryan’s closest friend from high school, graciously picked us up from the airport despite being half asleep and half drunk from the night before. We spent our first day relaxing at Austin’s home outside the city, in the forested enclave of Les Planes. We ate delicious pizza (our favorite was with fig and goat cheese) and chatted with Austin’s housemates. Valentina is a an awesome swiss-german woman who has studied traditional medicine. Chris is an english bloke who manages to be both laid-back and engaged in the same moment.
The next day we gathered some outdoor gear and Austin’s energetic dog, Kala, and set out for the mountain kingdom of Andorra.
Tumblr media
Kala was primed for romping
The drive through small spanish and french villages with the ragged mountain range in the background was picturesque. Crossing the border into Andorra is a strange experience. The source of Andorra’s wealth lies in its status as a tax-free haven. Upon entering, one is bombarded with neon offers of cheap liquor and perfume in gigantic malls. However, Andorra’s heart and soul is in its mountains. Andorra has beautiful mountains. Everywhere you look sun-kissed granite and quartz peaks look down upon you.
Tumblr media
Our starting point - trailhead at Rui d’Incles
We spent three days hiking and camping, climbing through steep valleys filled with boulders, streams, and glass-like alpine lakes. We climbed up the Rui d’Incles drainage up to a ridge that straddled the France-Andorra border. The only people we saw were close to the trailhead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One neat feature of the Pyrenees (and other European mountain ranges) is the system of refugios - stone huts that offer shelter and, sometimes, food and drink. We stayed in one the first night that was a simple two-room slate-roof affair. We sipped on hot cocoa mixed with whiskey while playing Cambio, a local card game similar to Golf. In another area stood two refugios that could sleep 30-40 people and were equipped with a restaurant and bar. They were beautifully constructed and had neat features like a hydroelectric generator and big outdoor patio. They were closed for the season, however we could sit on the patios and dream of hamburgers and surly french mountaineers drinking vermouth.

We returned to city life in Barcelona, spending two nights in the hip neighborhood of El Poble Sec. Austin works in that neighborhood. He’s got a cool gig working for Eat Street, a little company that organizes street food events around the city. The events have really taken off. Americans take note: the job is hard work no doubt, but he can also go into the office in the afternoon and team brainstorming often involve drinking many beers. Perfect.
Tumblr media
Austin’s flexible work schedule allows him to spend more time with his child
During our last days in Barcelona we walked through city parks and quaint cobblestone alleys, toured the harborside, sipped on coffee and wine, and ate delicious tapas. We soaked in Turkish baths, an elaborate indoor system of hot pools of varying saline and temperature. Austin arranged them for us while backpacking, on a cold wet evening, after hearing Amanda’s talk of soreness from the past weeks of biking and hiking. (Thanks again Austin!) We also visited Parc Guell, the city park designed by Gaudi, likely the most popular tourist attraction in Barcelona. And for good reason. Calling it a “park” is like calling the Great Lakes a “water feature” - it’s accurate but largely misses the point. Parc Guell is brimming with hallucinatory structures like a huge undulating bench covered completely with colorful mosaic tiles and gatehouses with towering irregular spires reminiscent of a gingerbread house.
Tumblr media
The Serptine bench at Parc Guell
After a quick trip to a local climbing gym and one last meal in Barcelona, we said goodbye to Europe as we boarded for our next flight, headed to southeast Asia.

Gerard Pique & FC Andorra: Why Barcelona defender bought a fifth-tier Spanish team
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/gerard-pique-fc-andorra-why-barcelona-defender-bought-a-fifth-tier-spanish-team/
Gerard Pique & FC Andorra: Why Barcelona defender bought a fifth-tier Spanish team
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FC Andorra’s Estadi Prada de Moles has just one stand with capacity for around 530 fans
Surrounded by mountains and 4,000ft above sea level sits the 530-seater Estadi Prada de Moles.
It is here, in the tiny Andorran village of Encamp, that Barcelona defender Gerard Pique dreams of hearing the Champions League anthem.
He has heard it before, of course, having won the competition four times as a player. But now he wants to experience it as a club owner.
In December, soon after transforming tennis’ Davis Cup, the Pique-owned Kosmos group bought FC Andorra, then in Spanish football’s fifth tier.
Pique has big ambitions for Spain’s version of Salford City – the English non-league team owned by six former Manchester United players.
With one promotion secured already, Pique, manager Gabri and first-team player Federico Bessone talk BBC Sport through a remarkable five months.
‘A risky venture’
Pique with the squad at the announcement of a sponsorship partnership with Andorra bank MoraBanc
FC Andorra, who were founded in 1942, have played in the Spanish league system since 1948.
When Kosmos took charge of the club, they were struggling with debt, one point off the relegation places and 17 points behind the leaders of the Primera Catalana.
“No-one thought FC Andorra could be a very interesting prospect, but we analysed it and thought it had great potential,” says Kosmos director Ferran Vilaseca.
Pique, 32, heard of the club through “friends of friends” from Andorra and thought “it could be an interesting opportunity”.
“The main difference with other clubs in Spain is here there’s a whole country backing up the team,” says the Spain centre-back.
“We don’t want to be just an investor, we want to be involved in the team, to make it better and place the team in higher divisions.”
The World Cup winner’s first move was to appoint former Barcelona players Gabri and Albert Jorquera as manager and assistant manager respectively.
Gabri spent 13 years at the Nou Camp, winning the Champions League in 2006. The 40-year-old had been in charge of Barca’s youth teams and managed Swiss top-flight side FC Sion before moving to Andorra.
“Friends and family were surprised and questioned me because it was a risky venture,” he says.
“They asked if I was sure because it involved a change of country and I had to leave my family.
“Leaving the professional world to go down so many levels, you have little to gain and a lot to lose. But Gerard convinced me – his attitude especially.”
A Barca makeover
Gabri won the Champions League at Barcelona as a player
Gabri acknowledges taking charge of a semi-professional team in the Spanish fifth tier was “very different to what I was used to”.
“My first impression was it’s an amateur team which trained with quite difficult means with a difficult schedule,” he says. “The players have jobs – they work during the day and train at night.”
The squad, which included several Andorra internationals, has been given a Catalan makeover and now features graduates from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, including Bessone, Marti Riverola, and Adria Vilanova – the son of late Barca boss Tito.
“Players like Riverola or Bessone were at some point in a team with me or players like [Barcelona forward] Leo Messi,” Pique says.
Argentine defender Bessone, who has played for Swansea City and Leeds United, dropped a division from Catalan side Prat to join FC Andorra.
There he has been reunited with former Charlton team-mate Ruben Bover.
“I rang him and asked him what he was doing there because, with all due respect, this was the Primera Catalana,” said Bessone.
“It was not easy to move. I decided to join because I liked everything they were telling me. And, amazingly, everything they have told me has come true.”
Bessone has played for Barcelona B as well as Swansea and Leeds
Bessone remembers Pique from the Barcelona academy, and played alongside Messi in the C team.
“Before my first game, Pique came to Andorra to introduce himself and explained what was going on,” said Bessone.
“He remembered me from our time together at Barcelona. It says a lot about the kind of humble, friendly person he is.”
Because of his playing commitments, Pique was only able to watch a handful of games in person last season.
“I would like to go more often but Barcelona has a very tight calendar,” he says. “But I follow the games.
“My parents and my brother have gone to support the team several times – they were present the day they won the league.”
Gabri adds: “He always tries to come to speak to the players and encourage them and be close to the team.
“It was a bit difficult for the players at first. There was a lot of change, and then Pique was coming to games. There was a bit of nervousness and pressure.
“But when you know Gerard, he gives you confidence. Now it’s a bit more accepted.”
‘The lads have never seen so many fans’
An estimated 1,500 fans watch FC Andorra win promotion
The Pique effect has not just been felt on the pitch.
“At the beginning the fans did not believe what was going to happen,” says Vilaseca. “I remember the first game I went to see there were 10-15 people. Nowadays there can be 300-400 fans.”
Bessone estimates there were 1,500 fans present when the team secured promotion last month – packing out the stadium’s one stand and watching from the road behind, adding “the lads from Andorra had never seen so many fans.”
“With the results and our improving league position we’ve been able to attract more and more people,” says Gabri. “There’s been a very big change from the people who came before and who come now.”
Pique could not attend as it came a day after Barcelona were beaten by Valencia in the Copa del Rey final.
“When we started to follow the club the idea of promotion was real, but we were aware of the difficulty,” he says.
“The squad kept believing in the project and trained even harder. Their attitude is what got us promoted this year. I was really proud.”
FC Andorra will play in the Tercera Division next season
Copa del Rey return and the future
Pique says he is aware of Salford City, who were bought by his former Manchester United team-mates Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt, while another ex-United player, David Beckham, is also now a co-owner.
They are preparing for their first season in the English Football League after four promotions in five years.
“Having former professional players involved in lower-division teams is something positive,” says Pique. “It gives them extra support and make these leagues more interesting, for supporters and media.”
Next season, FC Andorra will play in the Tercera Division and will be in the draw for the Copa del Rey for the first time in 24 years – offering a potential meeting with Pique’s Barcelona.
Gabri says the first aim is to reach the Segunda Division and turn professional.
“I think it can be done,” he says. “Andorra is a country that wants to do something beautiful with football.”
He plans to be at the club for a “long time”, describing it as: “like a child that you want to watch grow up”.
Pique is “ambitious” and does “not want to talk about boundaries in this project”.
Asked if he will ever play for the club, he said: “I’m a Barcelona player and at the moment I’m not considering anything else.”
But what of his hopes of bringing European football to the club?
“Gerard says his dream is to listen to the Champions League song in Andorra,” says Vilaseca.
“We want to go step by step, with a lot of humility and respect to other teams. We have great ambitions. Dreams are difficult but not impossible.
“We want to become one of the key representatives of Andorra within the Spanish landscape and European landscape, for the country to be proud of this team.”
Additional reporting and translation by Becky Grey.
FC Andorra will play in next season’s Copa del Rey and could meet Barcelona

Hotel Review: Hotel Piolets Soldeu, Andorra
Hotel Piolets Soldeu Centre
The Andorran ski resort town of Soldeu is in the heart of the Pyrenees mountains and though it’s busy throughout the year, it’s during the winter months, when the snow lies thick on the ground, that it’s really buzzing. Hotel Piolets Soldeu is just metres from the gondola station, with many of the rooms overlooking the black run used for the Women’s World Cup.
Who for
Hotel Piolets Soldeu is for serious skiers: it’s one of the closest hotels to the ski lifts, there’s a designated ski locker room in the basement, and all of the rooms at the back of the property overlook the slopes. Families and groups are attracted by the option to have all your meals included, the heated indoor pool, and the fact that although there are lively bars and nightclubs nearby, the hotel itself is quiet, so you can get a good night’s sleep when you need to.
Accommodation
Hotel Piolets Soldeu Centre accommodation
The hotel’s rooms are spread across the upper floors of the building, either facing the slopes, or looking over Soldeu town. The slope-facing rooms have balconies, so you can make the most of the view. Inside, you’ll find comfortable double or twin beds, and plenty of space to hang and dry your ski gear should you need to. Many of the rooms can be interlinked, which is ideal if you’re travelling with children. The en suite bathrooms have hot showers and baths, which are a godsend to soak in and relax tired muscles at the end of a long, sometimes cold, day skiing. Rooms are accessible by elevators from the lobby, and a second elevator goes straight from the locker room to all floors.
Facilities
heated indoor pool
On the ground floor of the hotel you’ll find the bar (see below), which has a pool table should you fancy a game. In the basement there’s a heated swimming pool, sauna and steam room, which guests can use for a small fee. You’ll need to bring or buy a swimming cap if you want to use the pool.
Food and Drink
large buffet laid on for every meal
Most guests at Hotel Piolets Soldeu opt for half- or full-board. There’s a large buffet laid on for every meal, and though it does get busy, the staff do a sterling job of turning out fresh dishes. Given that they’re catering predominantly for skiers, it’s mostly calorie-laden, carb-heavy fare, but there are some tasty local Andorran and Catalan options, including fish dishes, and tapas-style snacks.
hotel’s bar
Regardless of the time of day, you can also stop by the hotel’s bar. The coffees and hot chocolates are a warming treat, especially if you have a pastry or muffin at the same time, and it’s seemingly never too early for a pint of draft beer, a gin and tonic, or a cocktail. In Andorra, there’s no duty on alcohol, so you’ll stay smiling even when you get the bill.
What’s Nearby?
Grand Valira from Soldeu
Soldeu is the best access point for the Grandvalira ski resort, the largest continuous ski area in southern Europe. The Soldeu ski school was set up, and is run by, Brits, and all of the ski and snowboard instructors are internationally qualified.
If you don’t fancy skiing, you can try your hand at dog sledding, snowmobiling, and igloo building. There are some beautiful mountain walks (though snow shoes or cross country skis are advisable in the winter), and you can rent mountain bikes with thick snow tires too.
Soldeu’s après ski scene is the liveliest in Andorra, and none of the nightlife spots are more than a couple of minutes’ walk away from Hotel Piolets Soldeu. The Harp, the most popular live music bar, is opposite the hotel, as is The Aspen sports bar, with its giant television screens, pool tables, and table football.

Value for Money
Andorra is one of the most affordable ski resorts in Europe, and significantly cheaper than those in the Alps. Hotel Piolets Soldeu is well-priced, especially given its central location.
Getting There
Andorra has no commercial airport, so you’ll need to take a flight to Barcelona or Toulouse. Onward bus transfers to Soldeu and other Andorran resort towns are frequent, especially in the ski season, and the bus stops right outside the hotel.
