“I'm a street legend
Block love me with a deep reverence
I was birthed in a C-section
Hella cops and police presence.”
“****** is banging over blocks that they don't own, thinking that's home
Boy, you think that's where you're from?
You don't really know where you're from
You don't know how deep your roots is or what your ancestors had done
So God bless all the sons and daughters who knew their history
So they knew where to take it farther
And all the ones that stuck with me like good barbers
Lookin' at my life story, God's a good author
Never was the loudest in the room, we move like ninjas
And if it cost you peace of mind, it might be too expensive.”
“Damn, I realize all my setbacks were inside of me
In high school I learned chemistry, biology
But not how to cope with anxiety.”

BIG ICE

Big Ice talked to us at HAZARD Magazine about finding her lane, what success means to her and her upcoming album “Bigger Dreams” in this exclusive interview.
HM: Thank you for talking to HAZARD Magazine! Can you tell the readers about yourself?
BI: I go by Big Ice. I’m from Houston, Texas. My start came a long time ago. When I was 8, I knew I wanted to be a rapper. I wrote lyrics to the preset beats on my Casio whenever I was at my dads house… and my mom is a huge hip-hop fan so, I grew up listening to everything (seriously man – everything), especially JAY-Z since she’s from NYC. My dad influenced me the same way. When I was 7, he took me to a studio next door to his barber shop and I freestyled a capella in the booth. He and his friend were gassing me up like crazy and it meant a lot to me. It wasn’t until 2014 that I actually recorded a freestyle and uploaded it online and since then I’ve been dedicated to the music.
HM: What was the defining moment for you? How did you know this is what you're meant to do?
BI: I knew this was meant for me after my very first show back in 2014. It was like 60 people there. Even my cousin, Nathan and my mom & step-dad were there. Everybody was really loving my set. As soon as I got off stage everyone was showing mad love which I didn’t expect. That moment was when I knew this is something I could do if I keep pushing and keep elevating with my writing.
HM: Speaking of performances, you came and performed during Homecoming, how was that experience?

BI: It was beyond amazing. I didn’t know what to expect out of that situation but that moment has changed my life in a lot of ways. I found out I was performing like two weeks before hand but I kept it to myself until a few days before the show. I still look at pictured sometimes like “Man that really happened.” I gained a lot of fans and opened a lot of ears so I’m truly grateful. I’ll never forget that day.
HM: What's your main goal with music? What does 'making it' mean to you?
BI: My main goal is to inspire with music. I want to motivate people with my music. I’m not intrigued by the fame and accolade aspect. I mean, being known is cool but inspiring someone in a positive way is a different type of cool. My goal is to establish generational wealth in my family and establish black owned businesses in my community so my people can recycle dollars within our own. I’m trying to create a new narrative. As long as that happens, I’ve made it. My dreams have come true.
HM: I follow you on twitter, I saw you recently dropped a song from your album. Can you talk to us about your upcoming project?
BI: Yup, I dropped “Bigger Nightmares” which is the intro from my album “Bigger Dreams” which drops April 30th. I had to push it back a couple times but it’s finally ready for release. My producer, T-LO DIMES, really did his thing with the production. All of my features are dope. I’m excited for everyone to hear it and I’m hoping it takes me places.
HM: What does hip-hop/rap mean to you? What's your main motivation behind your work?
BI: Well, in my opinion, there’s a difference between hip-hop and rap. Rap/Rapping is simply the act of reciting lyrics but hip-hop is the culture. The culture in itself means everything to me man. I’m not just a rapper, I’m a hip-hop historian. I love everything about hip-hop from the music to the fashion to the controversy. I was blessed to have three parents who didn’t hinder me from listening to hip-hop as a child. My mom always had the latest albums and she would break lyrics down for me. She would even keep me up to date on the latest rap beef. She’s a real one for that. I love everything about the game and I’m hoping to be officially apart of it one day.I’m going hard because I want a brighter future for myself and the people around me. I want to take care of family and my community. I want my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to have everything they need when I die. That’s my motivation. Nothing more or less.

HM: Touchy subject but let's talk about Nipsey for a minute. He influenced a lot of people in the rap game. Did he influence your work or your mission at all? What's your take?
BI: The first time I really heard of Nipsey was back in 2015 when he dropped his mixtape “Crenshaw” … I was intrigued by the fact he was selling them for $100 a pop and he only had 1,000 copies available. It was something no rapper had ever did before. Then HOV bought like 100 copies from Nip and I was like “Ok, my favorite rapper likes this guy so I’ma start tuning in.” I really loved his project “Mailbox Money” … I was inspired all over again when he had each copy at $1K and sold 60. I jammed that mixtape heavy my senior year of high school. His last project “Victory Lap” was very important for me. He spoke real facts on every song. I remember where I was and what I was doing the moment it dropped. He was putting everybody in the world on game and made real sacrifices to be successful. He gave back to his community and made sure his children will always be good once he’s gone. You can’t deny that kind of character. You can’t deny real integrity. He definitely had some influence in my mission before he died and now its x100. I’ll forever honor him and I hope he’s resting in peace.
HM: Well thank you for coming to talk to us. It was an honor and us at HAZARD Magazine can’t wait for ‘Bigger Dreams’ to drop tomorrow. Keep up with Big Ice here.

Underground and Hip Hop Movies
Gone but never forgotten. Nipsey Hussle was/is a legacy. Not only was he a rapper loved by many but a community activist too. He was a neighborhood kid that made it out and both his girlfriend Lauren and the rest of the world loved him for that. He overcame the pains of black neighborhood life like no other. He was born into the unfortunate circumstances of South Central and at the age of 14 joined the Rolling 60’s Neighborhood Crips, one of the biggest street gangs in Los Angeles, but his story didn’t end there. Following years of selling CD’s from the trunk of his car, Hussle reached a level of underground success. In 2013, he took another step up, selling limited edition physical copies of his independent mixtape, in which Jay-Z hoped on, buying 100 copies. With his success came many opportunities. Nipsey opened Vector 9, a coworking space that provided a tech incubator to South Central. He also united with Fatburger and a barber shop to reestablish the neighborhood beloved roller rink. He even harmonized with law enforcement to develop a response to gang violence, in which he was scheduled to meet with the day after his death. When asked why he featured gang life in his music during an interview, he responded,“I wanted to be able to say, ‘I’m one of you, and wherever I end up, you gone know that you could end up there, too. Whether it’s at the top of the game as a business owner, I came from this. I’m not on the outside of this culture.” Nipsey Hussle was a true inspiration to the community, as he gave back and provided hope for those that were born into injustice just like him.
Nipsey Hussle reminds me of Tommy the Clown. Both men were born into the unfortunate circumstances of gangs and violence but rose above and invested into their community. Although not easy at times, they never backed down. They always got back up, bettering themselves and pouring into those around them. While Tommy started “clowning”, a style of dance that acted as a source of entertainment and an outlet for the black community, Nipsey opened up opportunities in his community and restored lost ones, always giving back in anyway he could and using his music as an outlet to motivate others. Both Tommy and Nipsey were influential figures in their community, breaking the status quo and thriving in the midst of adversity.
Reading articles about Nipsey Hussle has really opened my eyes to how much of an icon he was in rap and the community. It takes a courageous man to rise above their circumstances and break out of the norm. It’s truly remarkable what he did for the community and I am in awe with the man he was and legacy he left behind.

I want to take a min. & tell y'all the story of @gfc.ny It all started with me & @sain7snsoldi3rs in 2006. Saint was managing @mickey.factz. @kwasikessie & I were creating Laced. We needed a theme song for the mag. Not many ppl were rapping about sneakers, etc. Mickey was one of the 1st. He became GFCNY's 1st artist. We couldn't afford to hire ppl so we did everything ourselves: A&R, marketing, publicity, styling, production. I'm a huge @pharrell fan & thought it'd be cool if Mickey flipped N.E.R.D. material. We flooded everyone's Myspace w/'In Search of the N.E.R.D.' We were 1 of the 1sts to focus on digital marketing, thru ideas & building relationships w/the OG blogs. We didn't have our own Macs so we'd go to the Apple store & push music there. @kidcudi would be in there doing the same thing. He was pushing his music while @ Bape. @kushedgod connected me w/ @jonnyshipes. He wanted to know who was behind Mickey. He believed in me cause of how I believed in others. He wanted me to do PR & digital marketing for @nipseyhussle. We started working on Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. 1. Fast fwd: Nipsey has figured out the model to make money digitally. Glad I was a part of his journey. Shipes held it down for me. He bought me my 1st Mac. I'll always will be appreciative. He didn't know him reaching out was perfect timing. The day before I was out here broke, shitting my pants (literally). Shit had to change. I told @Stalley about my bad day. We laughed & went to the barber shop. I cut all my hair off. I went & met with Shipes the next day. We worked on a few artists together (DZA & @bigkrit). I handled marketing & explored outlets like creatives & photo. I worked on KRIT's marketing & tour photography. I did my 1st photo exhibit in 2014. We curate lifestyles for artists we've respected since day 1. We now work w/dope artists: @6lack @a_chal @bigkrit @meloxtra @raury @kushedgod @wolfedemchls. @saistv & I handle @bigbabydram's creatives through our agency #BOOOTLEG. The hardest shit is the most inspiring shit: you gotta do it all. Be the leader of every part of your life. Own it. (at New York, New York)

HANiF Flexes On His New Surprise EP "No Clout" Produced by TOPE | @QuadrupleOGLuck @itsTOPE
Two of Portland's Hip Hop GOATs HANiF (formerly known as Luck-One) and TOPE connect for the surprise EP "No Clout" available exclusively on Bandcamp for sale only!
Hitting Bandcamp's Top 5 Best Selling list within 24 hours, HANiF and TOPE shocked their fans with the new EP out of nowhere dropping with little to no promotion. 7 songs deep, HANiF makes his return to music with his first official release since 2014 and sounds sharper than ever with updated bars and unleashed lyricism. TOPE surprises listeners as well with a new and improved production sound that shows his growth as a musician and producer, featuring additional production by Anthony Danza on "LLC."
Taking a page out of Nipsey Hussle's playback, HANiF elected to forego streaming services to exclusively sell his new project, and so far, the decision is paying off. With artists having clear over 1,500 streams to equal one sale in 2020, HANiF and TOPE are taking advantage of the work they put in for years to build a dedicated fanbase in the Northwest and worldwide. With HANiF dropping his first official release in over 5 years, fans have been happy to fork over $9+ to hear what an artist they love has been up to.
As two trailblazers in the Portland Hip Hop scene both TOPE and HANiF took time away from music and relocating to Oakland and New York respectively. Connecting while back in Portland the basis of HANiF's No Clout EP was essentially laid in one studio session with TOPE playing beat after beat and HANiF inspired to eat up every track coming his way. Guaranteed to be one of the best projects you hear to 2020 hit https://luckonemusic.bandcamp.com/ to support these two independent artists.

2020 GRAMMYS CARPET: Chris Brown On Dad Duty, Cardi Floated & Dripped, Tyler Drips Doorman Swag, Lauren London, Big Freedia, Chyna
Although everyone was hurting after hearing the news of Kobe Bryant’s death, celebs hit the red carpet for the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards inside the Staples Center. Peep the red carpet flicks inside…
The vibes for the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards were a bit somber and subdued as hours before news broke that NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant died in a helicopter crash. Kobe spent his entire 20-season career with the Los Angeles Lakers inside the Staples Center. With fans gathered outside of the multi-purpose arena, celebs trekked inside to celebrate music and remember an icon.
Several celebs declined to speak with the press after learning about Kobe’s death, which is totally understandable as we all were stunned and shocked by the tragic news.

Cardi B and Offset dripped hard on the carpet in Mugler and Chrome Hearts.
R&B crooner Chris Brown – who was nominated for Best R&B Song for his track “No Guidance” – brought his 5-year-old daughter Royalty Brown as his date for the evening. The mini fashionista rocked a cream sweater over a white blouse with a matching cream skirt, black boots and white ruffled socks. Her famous dad debuted colorful hair – half pink, half blue. He wore a yellow and cream Prada sweater paired with black trousers for the ceremony.
Big sister Royalty - who welcomed her baby brother Aeko Catori Brown last month - is already learning how to snap a quick selfie with fans from her dad. Check it:

Too cute.
This year’s Grammy Awards paid tribute to late rapper Nipsey Hussle, so his entire family was there to see it, including his soul mate/son’s mother Lauren London (rocking Pamella Roland), his daughter Emani Asghedom (who attended the Grammys with her dad last year), Nipsey’s sister Samantha Smith, and Nispey’s grandmother.
The tribute included performances by Meek Mill, John Legend, DJ Khaled, YG, Roddy Ricch and Kirk Franklin, which went down after winning his first Grammy posthumously.
Watch the family accept his Grammy below:
Nipsey just won a Grammy. His family came to the stage to accept the award.

After the tribute, Nip copped another Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance for his feature on DJ Khaled’s “Higher” with John Legend.
Before hitting the stage, John Legend rocked a gray pleated Alexander McQueen suit.
His wife/model Chrissy Teigen (and our fave meme-able face during awards shows) joined him on the carpet in an orange ruffled Yanina Couture dress.
Can't say this is our fave.
New dad again DJ Khaled rocked a black suit with red and black Nike sneakers on the carpet.
Grammy & Oscar winning artist Common remembered Kobe Bryant when he stopped to talk to the media.
“We all feel it in our own way but his family, his loved ones feel it in another way,” he said. I’m just giving it to God and hopefully, today we can celebrate through music and different things, but there’s nothing that can take away from what life is.”
“I just want to say, God bless his soul and his daughter, and everyone who was on that helicopter,” he continued. “Man, it just makes you think about people in the world. And we love him.”
"The Chi" actor later performed for a tribute to Trustee Award winner and longtime Grammy Awards executive producer Ken Ehrlich. He hit the stage for a performance with Misty Copeland Camila Cabello, Ben Platt, The War and Treaty for "I Sing The Body Electric" from the musical "Fame."
Oh yeah, and Common was looking GOODT in his maroon Dolce & Gabbana suit.
Before hitting the stage with FKA Twigs and Shelia E to pay tribute to Prince, Usher rocked Balmain on the carpet. It's not horribly bad, but we would have liked to see something more polished.
Before FKA worked that pole on stage, the singer posed it up in this pink and black Ed Marler concoction. Are we feeling it?
Before winning Best Rap Album (his first Grammy ever) and performing at the Grammys, Tyler the Creator served up doorman swag in a pink and red Golf Le Fleur outfit.
After the show, he reacted to Kobe's death:

Peep his acceptance speech (and his super happy mother) below:

Rap couple Quavo and Saweetie have been all over LA during Grammy weekend, so it was no surprise when they popped up on the carpet together.
The Migos rapper rocked a custom red and black Prada suit.
Meanwhile, his "ICY" girlfriend dazzled in Moschino.
And look who else came out...
We don't seem him often, but Migos rapper Takeoff was in the Grammy mix.
Gucci Mane (who rocked a Gucci suit) and his wife Keyshia Ka'oir Davis rolled up on the scene in matching 'fits.
On the red carpet, Mrs. Davis said it took her five hours to get dress because she ended up breaking a zipper on her dress. So, they had to sew her in it. By the way, Gucci Mane revealed he has pieces coming out with Italian luxury brand, Gucci. The rapper also talked about his Grammy nomination with Lizzo and more. Check it:
youtube
Singer Khalid was nominated for Record of the Year for his track "Talk." Unfortunately, Billie Eilish won for "Bad Boy." This is his 6th Grammy nomination.
Rapper YBN Cordae landed his first two nominations for Best Rap Song ("Bad Idea") and Best Rap Album (The Lost Boy). He didn't win, but he was SUPER ecstatic to even be nominated.
Lil Nas X had one hell of a night in his bright pink cowboy inspired Versace suit.
The 6-time nominee won his first two Grammy Awards ever - one for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and one for Best Music Video, both for "Old Town Road (Remix)." Congrats!
He also hit the stage to perform "Old Town Road" and "Panini" where he brought out rapper Nas, Young Thug, BTS and Billy Ray Cyrus. Peep his performance HERE.
Young Thug also hit the carpet in this outfit before the stage.
"POSE" actor Billy Porter went full glam cowboy in a sparkly teal Baja East 'fit topped with a custom wide brimmed Sarah Sokol Millinery hat.
Bounce queen Big Freedia - who was featured in a Facebook commercial during the show - also served up cowboy vibes.

A post shared by Big Freedia (@bigfreedia) on Jan 26, 2020 at 5:11pm PST
Rapper Swae Lee was asked what he was wearing on the red carpet and he said "Peter Dunbar." He meant a custom 'fit by Peter Dundas. He was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Sunflower" with Post Malone.
Lady in red!

Today was HARD. I can’t lie, it was difficult to report on something fun when so much tragedy hit so quickly. But I do want to take a second to take in this moment, feel absolutely BLESSED, and thank all the people who worked hard to get me on this red carpet tonight. I appreciate every single moment.
