Family matters AU. Levi and Noah's meeting throught Levi's POV.
Levi knew it long before he asked. Long before he opened his mouth at all, actually.
It is universally acknowledged truth amidst the druids what everyone moving on two feet is a dirty liar.
This societal conviction grows out of another known to the druids fact; emotions have smells.
Emotion is a chemical reaction of a body to some outside stimulus, and, as any chemical reaction, it provides an echo. A mix of hormones getting into the blood, extra sweating or unusual heart hate, the rise of the body heat or the sudden drop of it.
Emotions control such reactions and thus provide the outlet for the body to process it.
Thus the smell changes.
It almost never fully aligns with the way two feet walker presents themselves, does not back up the words spoken aloud.
They all are liars: humans, elves, dwarves and halflings, mixed breeds of all kinds, children touched by Hells.
Everyone lies; their smell does not.
So, naturally, as a talented druid of his own, Leviathan Anchev always relies on the smells first, they have never let him astray before.
Not what he can remember.
So this is what catches his attention when it's more wise to pay it to a fight.
The smell.
The ghostly-light wiff of another living being in the building.
A child. A particularly strange smelling child.
This is what leads him to abandon the fight at all, rather recklessly even, and follow the scent to a small alcove with steep stairs leading up.
This is what makes him climb the steps, effortlessly discard of several alerted by his presence guards and stop in front of a locked door.
This is what makes him blast the darned lock to ashes, turn on the knob and step inside.
The smell.
The intricate mix of personal odor of two people combined.
It is another universally aknowledged by druids truth what children often smell as a combination of their parent's scents. It stirs from the primeval biology and the way the child is inevitably a product of two genomes interwoven, combined to a new, previously unexistent mix.
One is his.
Another belongs to Gortash.
It is also a thing what helps animals track their cubs, no matter how far they've gone.
Levi is very much that animal now.
And he knows; he knows even before he sees the boy with the dark hair and Gortash's face, sans the crooked nose and dark shadows under his eyes. He knows before infernally bright green eyes peer at him curiously, his own gaze reflected back at him.
He knows before the child stumbles from the sofa he was sitting on, transfixed by some odd board game.
He knows and something deep inside him aches and burns and twists.
His. This little boy with faint freckles scattered across cheeks is his.
But two-legged creatures are liars, and Levi is currently one, so naturally, he is too.
And he lies. To the boy he just met yet loves more than is reasonable, to himself, a man not allowed such affections, to the whole situation itself. He lies and pretends he Does Not Get it.
He lies and intruduces himself, he lies and chats the boy up as his father climbs the stairs, no doubt brought up by some kind of alarm system.
He lies even as Enver Gortash's body betrays him, his own scent betrays him, letting Levi know not only of the man's presence, but the sudden, wild and uncontrollable gush of affection.
The boy is the source of it. No, the boy and him, interacting with each other.
Just what kind of a tragedy Levi managed to leave behind?
But he keeps the rouse, asks the questions, and finds more than he had any right to know.
His voice trembles and his hands tremble and finally he snaps, because he is not a wild animal and he needs to hear the confirmation spoken aloud.
It is spoken aloud, with the smile so false it reeks of its owner being wary, ready to open fire at the mere hint of his cub being in danger.
That revelation is worse than knowing he and Gortash were involved. That revelation lets him know the child is loved and, if the total lack of fear from the boy is of any indication, is treated fairly.
That's a low blow.
His voice trembles as he tries to calm the child - his child - down as the boy - Noah, Noah - sobs, hands wrapped around Levi's neck in a strongest hold they can muster.
He can smell a fury of conflicted emotions tearing at his companions, and cares not. Not even for Astarion's, who seems to be affected even more than Karlach.
Instead he concentrates on the intoxicating scent of him and Gortash intertwining, joining in this child, the product of their creation.
Their child.
He kisses Noah's forehead and tastes the expensive soap what was used, he buries his nose in his hair and it smells of herbs. He closes his eyes and melts away, merging together with a creature what was once inside his body, whom he had grown, muscle and bones and sinew, from his very own flesh.
Flesh of his flesh, blood of his blood.
His son.

Golden Dawn: What is Hermeticism?
Hermeticism is a religious and philosphical system based on the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus (Hellenistic conflation of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth) produced over approx. c. 300 BCE - 1200 CE.
Tumblr media
One of the most common uses of the label is to refer to the religio-philosophical system propounded by a specific subgroup of Hermetic writings known as the 'religio-philosophical' Hermetica, the most famous of which are the Corpus Hermeticum (a collection of seventeen Greek Hermetic treatises written between c. 100 and c. 300 CE) and the Asclepius (a treatise from the same period mainly surviving in a Latin translation).
Hermeticism was closely associated with the idea of a primeval, divine wisdom, revealed only to the most ancient of sages, such as Hermes Trismegistus. In the Renaissance, this developed into the notion of a prisca theologia or "ancient theology", which asserted that there is a single, true theology which was given by God to some of the first humans, and traces of which may still be found in various ancient systems of thought.
Philosophy
God as “The All” -  The ultimate reality is called by many names, such as God, Lord, Father, the Creator, the All, the One, etc. However, specific to the Hermetic view of the divinity is that it is both the all and the creator of the all. God (”the All”) creates itself, and is both transcendent (as the creator) and immanent (as the created cosmos).
As Above, So Below - Appears in its most widely divulged Latin translations as:
Quod est superius est sicut quod inferius, et quod inferius est sicut quod est superius. That which is above is like to that which is below, and that which is below is like to that which is above.
Prisca theologica - The doctrine that a single, true theology exists, that is exists within all religions, and that it was given by God to man. Christians appropriate the Hermatic teachings for their own purposes to demonstrate the truth of this doctrine themselves. By this account, Hermes Trismegistus was (according to the fathers of the Christian church) either a contemporary of Moses himself or the third in line of men named Hermes (Enoch, Noah, then Hermes Trismegistus).
Three parts of the wisdom of the whole universe - A phrase derived from the Emerald Tablet, referring to three disciplines purportedly taught by Hermes Trismegistus.
Alchemy (operation of the sun, an investigation into the spiritual constitution of life, of matter, and material existence through an application of the queries into birth, death, and potential resurrection. Seen as the key to theurgy).
Astrology
Theurgy (”operation of the gods”, one of two different types of magic. The Goetia - black magic reliant on an alliance with evil spirits, i.e. demons, and theurgy - divine magic reliant on an alliance with divine spirits i.e. angels, gods)
Fall of Man -
Man observed the creation of nous and received from God man's authority over all creation. Man then rose up above the spheres' paths in order to better view creation. He showed the form of the All to Nature. Nature fell in love with the All, and man, seeing his reflection in water, fell in love with Nature and wished to dwell in it. Immediately, man became one with Nature and became a slave to its limitations (desires such as sex, necessities such as sleep). In this way, man became speechless (having lost "the Word") and he became "double", being mortal in body yet immortal in spirit, and having authority over all creation yet subject to destiny.
Religious and Philosophical Texts
The Corpus Hermeticum -  17 chapters, which hold dialogues between Hermes Trismegistus and a series of other men. The first chapter contains a dialogue between Poimandres and Hermes. Poimandres teaches the secrets of the universe to Hermes. In later chapters, Hermes teaches others, such as his son Tat and Asclepius.
The Emerald Tablet -  A short work attributed to Hermes Trismegistus which was highly regarded by Islamic and European alchemists as the foundation of their art. The text of the Emerald Tablet first appears in a number of early medieval Arabic sources, the oldest of which dates to the late eighth or early ninth century.
The Asclepius - A.K.A. The Perfect Sermon, The Perfect Discourse, or The Perfect Teaching. Written in the second or third century, and is similar in content to the Corpus Hermeticum.
History
When Hermeticism was no longer endorsed by the Christian church, it was driven underground, and several Hermetic societies were formed. The work of such writers as Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, a man who attempted to reconcile Jewish kabbalah and Christian mysticism, brought Hermeticism into a context more easily understood by the variety of Europeans gaining the skill to read during the time of the Renaissance.
Hermetic magic underwent a 19th-century revival in Western Europe, where it was practiced by groups such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Many Hermetic, or Hermetically influenced, groups exist today. Most of them are derived from Rosicrucianism or the Golden Dawn.

God Judges the World
(Sunday, May 28th, 2023 A.D.)
Genesis 7:10-24
Golden Text:       1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2) And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Genesis1: 1-2
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. 12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. ... 21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: 22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.- Genesis 7:11-12, 21-22
Look at the verses just above. In Genesis 1:1-2 God reports a “once in an eternity” miracle took place, when God created the Heaven and Earth. When God created Earth, it was covered by water. The word deep found in Genesis 1:2 is defined:  Strong: H8415 1) deep, depths, deep places, abyss, the deep, sea; 1a) deep (of subterranean waters); 1b) deep, sea, abysses (of sea); 1c) primeval ocean, deep. There most of the subterranean waters stayed until the world wide flood. Then God unleashed them. These were the fountains of the great deep, that were broken up. Waters covered the Earth.
Earth is again to be covered by water with this world wide flood of Judgment, covered with water, as it was in the beginning. God here begins the second creation of mankind and the animals through their kinds. But is this a cleansing? The people and all the animals were all selected by God. Noah and his family who (although not sinless) obeyed and trusted and believed God. Every one of the animal inhabitants on the Ark was directed there by God.
The moving picture sermon: Many people have been indoctrinated to believe God’s Bible is partly in error (part a lie) they believe that these men of Noah’s day were crude men in skins, with perhaps stone or maybe a few iron tools. But, for those who believe God and His Bible, we see in Genesis, Chapter 4:21-22 that men had by then made musical instruments and were metal craftsmen working in brass and iron. Brass means copper and a copper alloy or a combining of copper and another metal (usually zinc or tin) to make bronze. To obtain copper and zinc we must know how to mine things from the ground. Brass needs a process of smelting (melting the two ores and combining them) the heat needed would have to be sufficient to melt copper (19850 F) and zinc (7880 F).
This kind of technology that could make flutes, harps, lyres and smelt copper would have to be much more advanced than your biology teacher was told to tell you. These are the men who watched the events unfold as the last preparations were made.  They apparently went in for awhile, but also came out as they loaded provisions and animals on the last day before the deluge.
Perhaps it was like a new barn or milking parlor where the animals got used to it, but went outside during the day to eat and take care of other biological functions. But can you imagine enough animals and birds to fill up a three story building where the floors could have been as much as 15 feet high or higher if the upper floors were not as tall. The ark was almost a city block long (a football field and one half) and it was as wide as one half a football field and it was forty five feet tall.
Perspective: Today with floors of ten feet that Ark would be taller than most four story buildings and it would be longer and wider than good sized three story motels.
There were seven sets of what we call clean animals (ceremonially pure with no blemish or fault from their type or kind of animal). They went in, the male and the female, as God had commanded.  What a living moving picture that had to be of the thousands of animals, for the unsaved men of earth. What were they thinking?
From Where Did All The Water Come? This time God also used some of the same waters that were in the Earth: fountains of the great deep, some that were above the Earth: firmament (windows of heaven). In addition God caused it to rain on the Earth for forty (40) days and forty (40) nights. Was this a cleansing of the unclean Earth?  Was the flood real, did it actually happen? Consider this evidence.
When the Bible refers to a worldwide Flood in Genesis 7–8, that’s exactly what it means. Not local, not metaphorical, not some crazy dream—the waters covered the whole earth. Don’t just take our word for it, though. Take a look at the evidence right beneath your feet.
Evidence 1: Fossils of sea creatures high above sea level due to the ocean waters having flooded over the continents
We find fossils of sea creatures in rock layers that cover all the continents. For example, most of the rock layers in the walls of Grand Canyon (more than a mile above sea level) contain marine fossils. Fossilized shellfish are even found in the Himalayas.
Evidence 2: Rapid burial of plants and animals
We find extensive fossil “graveyards” and exquisitely preserved fossils. For example, billions of nautiloid fossils are found in a layer within the Redwall Limestone of Grand Canyon. This layer was deposited catastrophically by a massive flow of sediment (mostly lime sand). The chalk and coal beds of Europe and the United States, and the fish, ichthyosaurs, insects, and other fossils all around the world, testify of catastrophic destruction and burial.
Evidence 3: Rapidly deposited sediment layers spread across vast areas
We find rock layers that can be traced all the way across continents—even between continents—and physical features in those strata indicate they were deposited rapidly. For example, the Tapeats Sandstone and Redwall Limestone of Grand Canyon can be traced across the entire United States, up into Canada, and even across the Atlantic Ocean to England. The chalk beds of England (the white cliffs of Dover) can be traced across Europe into the Middle East and are also found in the Midwest of the United States and in Western Australia. Inclined (sloping) layers within the Coconino Sandstone of Grand Canyon are testimony to 10,000 cubic miles of sand being deposited by huge water currents within days.
Wikipedia, while not sure the world wide flood happened, does offer:
The story of the flood takes up chapters 6–9 of the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible. Ten generations after the creation of Adam God saw that the earth was corrupt and filled with violence, and He decided to destroy what He had created. But God found one righteous man, Noah, and to him He confided His intention: "I Am about to bring on the Flood ... to eliminate everywhere all flesh in which there is the breath of life ... ." So God instructed him to build an ark (in Hebrew, a chest or box), and Noah entered the ark in his six hundredth year, and on the 17th day of the second month of that year "the fountains of the Great Deep burst apart and the floodgates of heaven broke open" and rain fell for forty days and forty nights until the highest mountains were covered to a depth of 15 cubits, and all life perished except Noah and those with him in the Ark. After 150 days, "God remembered Noah ... and the waters subsided" until the Ark rested on the mountains of Ararat, and on the 27th day of the second month of Noah's six hundred and first year the earth was dry. Then Noah built an altar and made a sacrifice, and God made a covenant with Noah that man would be allowed to eat every living thing but not its blood, and that God would never again destroy all life by a flood.
MESSAGE TEXT: -  Genesis 7:10-24
10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
After seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth. So, the loading process must not have taken that long. It was accomplished and the animals and fowls all had their places and most likely bedded down and became familiar with their places. AND after seven days from when God had warned them to get on board the Ark as the rain was coming, God kept His Word. It began to rain: the waters of the flood were upon the earth. ~ Now all the people, the scoffers, those who laughed at Noah as he and his family were preparing their Ark because Noah believed God, also now believed. The people who did not believe God were now seeing Noah had been right. Noah had tried to warn them. Are you ready for His second coming of our Lord? Or are you like the pre flood mockers who ridiculed the plan of God? They were wrong about the Judgment of God.  How about you? Are you wrong about the soon return of Jesus?
The call to Noah is very kind, like that of a tender father to his children to come in-doors when he sees night or a storm coming. Noah did not go into the ark till God bade him, though he knew it was to be his place of refuge. It is very comfortable to see God going before us in every step we take. Noah had taken a great deal of pains to build the ark, and now he was himself kept alive in it. What we do in obedience to the command of God, and in faith, we ourselves shall certainly have the comfort of, first or last. This call to Noah reminds us of the call the gospel gives to poor sinners. Christ is an ark, in whom alone we can be safe, when death and judgment approach. The word says, "Come;" ministers say, "Come;" the Spirit says, "Come, come into the ark." Noah was accounted righteous, not for his own righteousness, but as an heir of the righteousness which is by faith, (Hebrews 11:7). - Matthew Henry 1710
11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life. Now we have a precise length of time being set out. It was in the 600th year, the 2nd month, and 17th day. This was one hundred years after Noah and his wife began to have sons. Those sons were fully grown and had taken wives.
In the second month, the seventeenth day of the month  were all the fountains of the great deep broken up. Springs of water of the great deep (deep 1a> (subterranean waters) 1b> deep, sea, abysses <of sea>) were broken up (split, cleave, break open, divide, rip up). The same day were all the fountains of the great deep - i.e. the waters of the ocean (Job 38:16, 30; Job 41:31; Psalm 106:9) and of subterranean reservoirs (Job 28:4, 10; Psalm 33:7; Deuteronomy 8:7) - broken up. "
And the windows of heaven were opened. And as if waters shooting up from the cracks in the earth, was not enough the windows (openings) of heaven (sky, visible heavens, 1a1>abode of the stars) opened  (to open, be let loose, be thrown open).  Also the rain came.
The rain was upon the Earth forty days and forty nights. And it was not just a shower.  It was not just rainfall. Rain came down for forty days and forty nights. It was non stop rain.
13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;
In the self same day, Noah and his family Shem, Ham and Japheth and their wives come into the Ark.  WE are not sure if God spoke to all in the family or just to Noah, we do know that they all regarded it as the Word of God and they obeyed as the rain was falling and waters were coming from below and above. For those outside the Ark, they must have begun to realize that Noah had been telling them the truth. This was a storm of epic proportions that no one had ever seen or imagined.  It was, I suppose, very frightening to now know that it was too late.  The time had come. God had now judged the world.  The Bible tells us:
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation. - Hebrews 9:27-28
There is another judgment coming.  Are you ready to meet your Lord?  Do not fail to be ready or you will face the Judgment of God. Christ died to pay your sin debt, your death penalty has been paid.  Have you received Him and His death in  your place?  He shall appear the second time. Will He be your judge or is HE your Savior?
(The flood waters were on the earth until the 601st year, the 2nd month, 27th day the earth was dried up. So the flood experience lasted one year and ten days).
14 They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.
Every beast after his kind. Verse 14 tells us only kinds of beasts (living creatures) went onto the Ark. And all cattle (collective: livestock, cattle, goats, sheep, etc.). As to kinds, thus you would not have 250 breeds of dogs, but only two of the dog kinds. The kind is a type of animal of the dog type and may well include the coyote and wolf as both of those have bred domestic dogs and resulted in healthy offspring.
Every creeping thing, and every fowl. And for some to say ‘the ark was not big enough,’ if they are sincere, they are not thinking. The Ark was 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. A cubit was then both said to be 18" and 24" (the latter was the Egyptian cubit). 300 cubits would be, at the least, 450 feet or if Egyptian measurement 600 feet long. There was no rush in building the ark. God could have  made it three blocks or a mile long. But we believe that if it were the shorter 450 feet long, thousands of animal kinds could have fit aboard this the ark. This ark was going to be sufficient to hold all the “kinds” of animals “wherein is the breath of life.”
Every bird of every sort.  Fowls after its kind. Flying things, such as birds and other things that fly in the air. We already have discussed insects and how they may well have survived outside the ark. Bird in the Hebrew means bird, but remember again it had to do with kinds not individual species.
There were to come in two by two.  But there were to be seven sets of clean animals (ceremonially pure with no blemish or fault for their kind of animal) and of the other animal kinds only two, the male and his female.
15 And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life. 16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
They went in unto Noah into the ark. They (the animals and others) went in, the male and the female, as God had commanded. NOTICE: Noah and family would not have to go round them up. They came as directed by God. There were clean, ceremonial and also non ceremonial animals, but they all had a purpose, they obeyed God. They would repopulate the Earth. Some were scavengers, who eat dead things to keep the land free of rotting flesh. Some could go for long periods without water. They all had a purpose. The same was true of flying things. There were bees for honey. There were bats to clean up annoying insects at night. Hummingbirds to carry out pollination. They all went in two and two. They went in where Noah and his family had prepared the ark (as God instructed). And as God had warned, the flood was upon them. Perhaps more than one billion people were on earth. They saw the waters of the flood coming upon the earth: rain, fountains of the deep, eruptions, the collapse of overhead waters from the canopy above. Man watched. It was too late. No longer would God strive with man.
God shut the door of the ark. God shut the saved in and the unbelievers God shut out. It was the beginning of a new earth, a new population. Does that remind you of the contrast between those who have new life in Christ Jesus and the lost?
16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.  18 He that believeth on Him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the Name of the Only Begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. - John 3:16-19
Those who do not believe, those who loved to stay in the darkness and corruption of this world are already condemned. They (you) who do not have the Son of God as the Lord of their individual life are condemned already.  You (they) will be shut out as were the unbelievers in the days of Noah.
17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
DESTRUCTION & DEATH: The flood was upon the earth as the earth fractured and cracked open to release the great fountains of the deep. There was an immediate, immense world wide flooding as tons of water came from inside the earth, from fountains erupting from the great deep (which God [who foreknows everything] had prepared for this use when HE created Earth]). Huge, powerful stratosphere-reaching geysers of scalding hot water must have shot up from the fractured earth. The inside of the Earth is full of magma. The heat is intense. The heat will kill all life. When this happened, mountain tops became uncapped. Volcanic magma spewed out for miles and miles. Earthquakes and landslides caused more death and destruction.
Remember the 1980 Mt. St. Helen volcanic eruption leveled a huge amount of trees (tens of thousands). All life that stood in front of the volcanic eruption died. New rivers and new canyons formed. Multiply that by hundreds, at the least. Yes, that fracture would have triggered thousands of powerful earth shaking, volcanic, disintegrating, vaporizing blasts. Hot molten magma (liquid rocks) at 20000F spewed out.
Each volcanic explosion would carry the strength of an atomic bomb (as did Mt. St. Helen) with all of its latent destruction. Enormous, property- crushing, people killing all in their path. The land slides would continue on and smother all in their path, man animal, all. There would be gigantic, out-of-control tidal waves in the Ocean. There would have been vicious, building pulverizing and animal man drowning floods. Every man, (except Noah and his family) every animal and every fowl (flying thing) not in the ark was destroyed or drowned.
If they had survived the initial flooding, other catastrophes that would be triggered by the earth fracturing would kill all in which was the breath of life.
After 40 days and nights of continual rain together with the fountains of the great deep opening, (and the heavenly canopy of water or ice falling) and the resultant destruction from the other catastrophes, the ark of God (the only place of safety on Earth) was floating on the top of the waters.
Commentators tell us that this cracking of the Earth is still seen in the ring of fire or ‘fault seams’ around the globe.
The waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth. BUT NOT THOSE IN THE ARK OF SAFETY.  As the waters increased the waters lifted up the ark of safety. And the ark was lifted above the death and destruction taking place.  (Like a rapture?)
18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.  19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered.  20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.
And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth. The waters became so deep the highest hills and mountains were covered with 15 cubits or 22 ½ feet of water. NOTHING COULD HAVE LIVED. With these conditions prevailing, everything made of flesh, that had in them the breath of life (normally breathed through their nostrils) and all that lived on the dry earth died. This is how the whole population of man on earth (that would not repent) who would not listen to the preacher of righteousness, Noah, would die. Also, all land breathing animals and all the flying things were destroyed.
The ark went upon the face of the waters. And the ark of God safely floated.
21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: 22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of life, of all that was in the dry land, died.
And do you think the men and the animals died without a struggle?  Most likely not. There must have been battles for the higher ground. It was the struggle for life and only the strongest would survive as they fought death. They undoubtably killed as they tried not to die. They fought. They most likely killed.
DEATH AND DESTRUCTION as has never been seen or imagined was taking place. They were very wise and may well  have had all the types of weapons that we have. They fought over the high ground, they most likely fought over the food. Most of the people and animals who died would end up in the water. There the sea monsters, the large fish, the large mammals would have gorged themselves on the dead and dying flesh.
23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained alive, and they that were with him in the ark.  24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
Every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground. The miracle is two fold: supernatural destruction of all and the supernatural preservation of one man and his family who obeyed God. One family on the ark (of safety). The flood conditions and the resultant catastrophic events, the entire flood lasted upon the earth for 150 days (five months).  Destruction and death as had never been seen before or since. The Great Tribulation will be no worse.
Note (1.) Desolating judgments come not till God has provided for the security of His own people; see Gen 19:22, I can do nothing till thou be come thither: and we find (Revelation 7:3) that the winds are held till the servants of God are sealed. (2.) When good men are removed judgments are not far off; for they are taken away from the evil to come, (Isaiah 57:1). When they are called into the chambers, hidden in the grave, hidden in heaven, then God is coming out of His place to punish, (Isaiah 26:20, 21).
Our Savior tells us that till the very day the flood came they were eating and drinking (Luke 17:26,27); they were drowned in security and sensuality before they were drowned in those waters, crying Peace, peace, to themselves, deaf and blind to all Divine warnings. Now they see and feel, and are convinced of their folly when it is too late; now they find no place for repentance, though they seek it carefully with tears. (2.) We may suppose that they tried all ways and means possible for their preservation, but all in vain. ...the flood reaches them, at last, and they are forced to die with the more deliberation. Thus it will be at the great day. Neither climbing high in an outward profession, nor claiming relation to good people, will bring men to heaven, (Matthew 7:22; Matthew 25:8, 9). Those that are not found in Christ, the Ark, are certainly undone, undone for ever;...(3.) Would it not be terrible if some of those that perished in the deluge had themselves assisted Noah, ... and yet were not so wise as by repentance to secure themselves a place in it. They may have been instrumental to help others to heaven, but themselves may have been thrust down to hell.
Let us now pause awhile and consider this tremendous judgment! Let our hearts meditate terror, the terror of this destruction. Let us see & say, It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God; who can stand before Him when He is angry?  Let us see and say, It is an evil thing, and a bitter, to depart from God. – Matthew Henry 1710
PRAYER: Almighty God, I can but imagine the death and destruction of the world wide flood.  But I know that since You sent Your Son to keep us out of hell and the lake of fire, they must be far worse. O God look upon my heart.  It is weak, it is wicked, God have mercy upon me, a sinner.  I confess that my sins are many and that only one is enough to place me in hell and later in the lake of fire. So, I beg of You have mercy upon me, a sinner. Please cleanse me. Forgive me, I pray. I need You every hour. I need You every minute.  I need You every second.  Protect me from all evil.  HELP ME to be the kind of a person that You want and expect me to be.  Strengthen me when I am tempted.  Help me.  Help me.  Please help me.  This I pray in the Name of the One Who died for me, my Lord and my Savior Jesus Christ, my Lord.  AMEN and amen.

Noah Primeval Preface Snark
If you enjoy the content you are reading, please like and follow the Center of Stupidity blog.
Summary: The author claims that his stories are rooted in "the theological and spiritual intent of the Bible."  He also loves to scripture drop. The worst is yet to come.
In case anyone wants to read the original author’s preface in order to form their own conclusions, you can read it here.
In the event that this gets flagged, here is another place to read the chapter snark.
Inspired By True Events.
Keep this in mind, folks.
Because...
Tumblr media
The story you are about to read is the result of Biblical and historical research about Noah’s flood and the ancient Near Eastern (ANE) context of the book of Genesis.
Translation: Because I did some research, it means that the novel is deep and elevated lit-ra-choor.
While I engage in significant creative license and speculation,
....
..................
......................................
That’s a verbose way of saying “I created a work of fiction.”
all of it is rooted in an affirmation of what I believe is the theological and spiritual intent of the Bible.
Even though there are countless Bible interpretations.
You found all of the "hidden truths"and know the "correct" way to read the Bible.
Tumblr media
But silly me.
This is the same person who spews vitriol at movies that don't conform to his beliefs and wrote a paper called Calvinism and the Bible.
In the document, Godawa insists that "Calvinism is simply Biblical Christianity" and how the five points of Calvinism are “truly Biblical doctrines, then most of us western American Christians have been sold a bill of goods as to what the Gospel really is."
For those who are leery of such a “novel” approach,
Tumblr media
Like some other writers, Godawa believes that he has a Wildean wit.
let them consider that the traditional Sunday school image of Noah as a little old white-bearded farmer
Tumblr media
I gotta call bullshit.
The traditional Sunday school image depicted Noah as being a white man.
It didn't emphasize that he was an old farmer.
building the ark alone with his sons is itself a speculative cultural bias.
It's been a while since I've been to CCD…
But I don't remember them ever discussing at great length on how the ark was built.
They don't deal in the minutia.
Instead they focused on educating people about their faith.
And the whole "speculative cultural bias" comment is rich...
Coming from a man who preaches in his fiction and does evangelizing podcasts with his friends.
The Bible actually says very little about Noah.
Instead we get lengthy details about who begat who and what tribe they came from.
We don’t know what he did for a living before the Flood or even where he lived.
Which is why the Midrash aggadah was written.
According to MJL, Midrash aggadah interprets biblical narrative, exploring questions of ethics or theology, or creating homilies and parables based on the text.
For instance, one of the best known midrashes is the story about Abraham.
It states while Abraham was a young child in Mesopotamia, he was smashing idols.
This story suggests that God didn't randomly pick Abraham.
Instead, God knew that Abraham would be receptive to His voice.
How do we know whether he was just a simple farmer or a tribal warrior?
The answer?
We will most likely never know for certain.
And secondly, who cares? It is minutiae.
Oh wait.
The author is going to bestow us the answer.
Genesis 9:2 says Noah “began to be a man of the soil” after the Flood, not before it.
Tumblr media
Genesis 9:2 says this:
The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands.
(This comes from the New International Version.)
And I checked two other translations: the King James Version [KJV] and the English Standard Version [ESV].
They are the same as the first.
The passage about Noah becoming a farmer comes from Genesis 9: 20
Noah began to be a man of the soil, and he planted a vineyard. [ESV]
Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. [NIV]
And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard. [KJV]
So in conclusion:
Tumblr media
If the world before the flood was full of wickedness and violence,
Because they would all fight evil physically.
It's not like righteous men would ever combat evil by using their words or practicing non violence.
Noah would not have been that different from Abraham,
Or…
He could have been a prophet whose words inspired others.
Nobody knows for certain what Noah did prior to the flood.
who farmed, did business and led his family and servants in war against kings.
Man, Godawa is obsessed with the idea of righteous warriors.
We know very little about primeval history,
Tumblr media
There is a newfangled thing called archaeology.
but we do learn from archeological evidence that humanity was clearly tribal during the early ages when this story takes place.
Um…
The previous line belies the rest of the sentence.
Where's the editor?
Yet, nothing is written about Noah’s tribe in the Bible.
We also don't know anything about Jesus' childhood.
Your point being?
It would be modern individualistic prejudice to assume that Noah was a loner when everyone in that Biblical context was communal.
Who ever said that he was???
Is Godawa just making up arguments so he can tear them down?
Noah surely had a tribe.
You already said that. Move along.
There is really no agreement as to the actual time and location of the event of the Flood.
And in other news…
Bears shit in the woods and the Pope is Catholic.
So B. Godawa lists some theories about when and where the Flood took place.
He thinks it is "Early Bronze Age Mesopotamian contexts" because of some passages in Genesis.
By the by... He doesn't mention any specific passages.
At some other time, I'll take a look at the appendix.
Because right now, I'm not in the mood to read an appendix that is about one hundred pages long.
The Bible also says Noah built the ark.
And now for the following news bulletin:
Adam and Eve lived in a place called the Garden of Eden.
Are we to believe that Noah built it all by himself?
Yes, if you take the Bible literally.
It doesn’t say. With his sons’ help? It doesn’t say.
Tumblr media
But that very same book does say earlier that Cain “built a city” (some scholars believe it was Cain’s son Enoch).
Which scholars said that?
Because doing a quick Google search got me absolutely bupkis.
Instead, I got a bunch of websites that talked about Cain building a city and naming it after his son.
Are we to assume that he built an entire city by himself?
No lie… I had to check and see if Cain had a son named Enoch. (And he did).
Because after the bungling of a verse from Genesis, I wasn’t sure if this was another mistake.
As for Cain building an entire city single handedly?  I’m sure Christian fundamentalists would respond with “yes”.
My response would be “no” followed by:
Who helped Cain to build a city? A lot of golems? Some demons? Or did he hire a lot of people in the nearby area?
If Cain just hired a bunch of people, wouldn't the idea of God only creating two humans [a.k.a. Adam and Eve] be false?
How did Cain get the materials to build a city?
How would Cain know which materials would be good for building a city?
And why did Cain want to build a city in the first place?
Tumblr media
Ridiculous.
Who knew that with one word, such disdain could drip from a person’s tongue?
Cain or Enoch presided as a leader over the building of a city by a group of people,
Tumblr media
Wait a tick…
Godawa previously said that it was Cain that built a city but some scholars believe it was Enoch.
And now he is stating that it could be Cain OR Enoch.
Does that mean that Godawa forgot what he wrote previously?
Or the man who sees himself as the Grand Poobah of Biblical Knowledge is finally admitting that he doesn’t have all the answers?
just as Noah probably did with his ark.
So in other words, Noah just sat on his ass and barked orders at people.
Because as we all know, that is a great leadership style.
One of the only things Genesis says about Noah’s actual character is that he was “a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God” (Gen. 6:9).
Now a normal person would interpret this to mean that Noah was a good person who conversed with God.
But Noah Primeval turns Noah into a Gary Stu. (By the way, this will be revealed in future chapter snarks).
The New Testament clarifies this meaning by noting Noah as an “heir” and “herald” of righteousness by faith (Heb. 11:7; 2Pet. 2:5).
ESV [English Standard Version] said Noah as a “herald of righteousness” while NIV and KJV described Noah as a “preacher of righteousness” (2 Peter 2:5).
While ESV, NIV, and KJV all described how Noah “became an heir of righteousness.” (Hebrews 11:7).
You might be thinking to yourself: What’s your point?
If we are to take into account what the Bible said about Noah… It describes Noah spreading God’s message (like a herald or a preacher). But it also adds that because of Noah’s faith in God, he “became an heir of righteousness.”
This differs from the depiction in Noah Primeval where Noah is the Chosen One from an ancient prophecy.
And that makes him superior to all the other filthy mortals along with slightly less perfect than Jesus.
The popular interpretation of this notion of “righteousness” is to understand Noah as a virtually sinless man too holy for his time, and always communing with God in perfect obedience.
But is this really Biblical?
If you mean, some people acting like sanctimonious hypocritical assholes, then I would loudly shout “Hell yes!”
Would Noah have never sinned? Never had an argument with God?
Personally, my answers would be “no” for both questions.
But in this novel, when Noah isn't acting like a bratty teenager, he acts like a smug douchebag.
Yet the reader is supposed to see Noah as a paragon of virtue.
Never had to repent?
In order to repent, a person must have genuine remorse for their actions. It also requires accountability.
It doesn't entail a person rending their garments melodramatically until they are completely naked and then yelling at the top of their lungs. I'm looking at you, Noah Primeval.
As a matter of fact, the term “righteous” in the Old and New Testaments was not a mere description of a person who did good deeds and avoided bad deeds.
Maybe it is because the writers of the Old and New Testament know that good people are not perfect. They make mistakes and take ownership of their actions.
Righteousness was a Hebrew legal concept that meant, “right standing before God” as in a court of law.
Tumblr media
What makes me so fucking disgusted is that Godawa has no qualms with cherry picking things from different mythologies and whatever doesn’t suit his narrative is either discarded or depicted as being malevolent lies.
It carried the picture of two positions in a lawsuit, one “not in the right,” and the other, “in the right”
You mean a lawsuit involves two sides:  the prosecution and the defense?
Tumblr media
or “righteous” before God.
And this series doesn’t hesitate to jump on a soap box and shout at the top of their lungs.
It was primarily a relational term.
*Sigh*
What’s next?
Are we going to define the definition of is?
Not only that, but in both Testaments, the righteous man is the man who is said to “live by faith,” not by perfect good deeds (Hab. 2:4; Rom. 1:17).
Tumblr media
So righteousness does not mean “moral perfection” but “being in the right with God because of faith.”
In other words, ice is cold and fire is hot.
….
This is leading up to rant filled with gratuitous Bible citations.
Tumblr media
What’s more, being a man of faith doesn’t mean a life of perfect consistency either.
You mean good people aren't perfect??? Thanks for notifying me Brian Godawa!
Look at David, the “man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22), yet he was a murderer and adulterer and more than once avoided obeying God’s will. But that doesn’t stop him from being declared as “doing all God’s will” by the apostle Paul.
At risk of sounding like a broken record, good people are not perfect.
Which is why repeating the obvious makes a person look like a blithering moron.
Or consider Abraham, the father of the Faith, who along with Sarah believed that God would provide them with a son (Heb. 11:8-11).
What does this have to do with anything? Is Godawa trying to dazzle the reader with how many Bible verses he can quote?
Yet, that Biblically honored faith was not perfect, as they both laughed in derision at God’s promise at first (Gen. 17:17; 18:12).
I guess Godawa never heard of a thing called context.
According to the Zohar, Sarah laughed because her son would have a feminine soul.
The Zohar also states that a soul from the "feminine world" cannot have children.
Sarah knew this and laughed because this contradicted God's promise to continue Abraham's bloodline.
God had to remind Sarah that He has the power to do anything. Which means He can turn a feminine soul into a masculine one.
And because Godawa loves to scripture drop, he cites additional examples from the Bible when people either argued or complained to God.
The very name Israel means “to struggle with God.”
I normally don't split hairs but considering the fact that the author fancies himself to be a scholar…
The word Israel means "God contends".
An alternate translation is "He Retains God"or "God Is Upright".
All the heroes in the Hebrews Hall of Faith (Heb. 11) had sinful moments, lapses of obedience and even periods of running from God’s call or struggling with their Creator.
According to the NIV translation, it commended the people for having a strong faith in God and how that faith allowed them to do what it is just. It does not give blow-blow descriptions of their spiritual struggles or a detailed accounting of all of their sins.
Now that I'm thinking about it… I have a sneaking suspicion that this is leading up to Godawa justifying his depiction of Noah.
Tumblr media
It would not be heresy to suggest that Noah may have had his own journey with God
Well, duh.
Noah's spiritual journey would have started with baby steps.
It is not like Noah would be chummy with God the very second he was born. A relationship with God is developed during a lifetime.
that began in fear and ended in faith.
Tumblr media
That's assuming that every person that started a relationship with God that said relationship was founded on distrust (which is fueled by fear) or the case of Noah Primeval, built on a foundation that is a passive-aggressive hate boner for the Almighty.
For some individuals, their spiritual journey never originated from animosity or distain because they always had faith.
In fact, to say otherwise is to present a life inconsistent with the reality of every human being in history.
Tumblr media
I'll say it again.
Every person's spiritual journey with God is different.
To insist that every person's relationship with God originated from negative emotions is not based in reality.
To say one is a righteous person of faith is to say that the completed picture of his life is one of finishing the race set before him, not of having a perfect run without injuries or failures.
Tumblr media
It is time for a writing exercise! Let’s take this wordy sentence and make it concise.
I'll go first.
The completed picture of a righteous person’s life is not a perfect run without injuries or failures but rather they finished the race set before them.
Now that I'm thinking about it …
This verbose sentence sounds like something that belongs in a fortune cookie.
Also, I find it odd that this little nugget of wisdom uses the gender neutral phrase “righteous person of faith” but then uses his | him pronouns.
Why am I getting the feeling that this is a subtle message that only a man can be a "righteous person of faith"?
Some scholars have even noted that the phrase “blameless in his generation” is an unusual one,
“They also think it is peculiar that the Flood lasted for forty days and nights. Why not eighteen or twenty-five? Is forty God’s favorite number or did He just pick it randomly?”
reserved for unblemished sacrifices in the temple.
Wait a minute.
So these scholars are stating that the phrase "blameless in his generation" is only used for animal sacrifices.
Which means Noah is likened to an animal sacrifice…
Tumblr media
Which is totally different from Noah Primeval's depiction of Noah as a macho and virile warrior who is the Chosen One.
Also, it is really dodgy when someone only gives some citations or doesn't provide any.
This physical purity
The words "physical purity" just sent shivers down my spine.
Because when words like that casually enter into a conversation, it is not long before an argument is made in favor of eugenics.
takes on new meaning when understood in the genetic context of the verses
"Genetic context"?
I didn't know that words had DNA.
Flippant comment aside, all this talk of "physical purity" and "genetic context" prompted me to do a quick Google search of the following:  Noah blameless in his generation animal and it  brought up a thread asking if Genesis 6:9 is referring to Noah's genetic purity.
before it that speak of “Sons of God” or bene ha elohim leaving their proper abode in heaven and violating the separation of angelic and human flesh (Gen. 6:1-4; Jude 5-7).
Um…
This is sort of correct.
Genesis 6:7-4 is about the Sons of God marrying beautiful human women and having children called Nephilim. Yet it also states that humans will live to be 120.
While Jude 5-7, the writer reminds the reader that God delivered his people out of Egypt and destroyed the non-believers. They also said that the angels who "did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling" along with the sinful people of Sodom and Gomorrah will be punished by "eternal fire."
Within church history,
Tumblr media
The concept of the Grigori and Nephilim originated in Jewish folklore and legends.
At some point, early Christians either stumbled across an old scroll discussing these ideas or simply heard about it. They probably found the whole story to be fascinating and proceeded to write their own interpretations.
there is a venerable tradition of interpreting this strangest of Bible passages as referring to supernatural beings from God’s heavenly host who mate with humans resulting in the giant offspring called Nephilim.
The idea that some angels came down from Heaven to mate with humans doesn't sound bizarre to me.
Frankly, the Book of Revelation reads like John was on a big acid trip.
Other equally respectable theologians argue that these Sons of God were either humans from the “righteous” bloodline of Seth or a symbolic reference to human kings or judges of some kind.
Again, Christians didn't come with these alternate explanations. For instance, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai strongly opposed the idea that the "benei elokim" were angels.
I have weighed in on the supernatural interpretation
That is a weird way of saying "I have decided to write a novel that depicts the Grigori as angels."
According to the Collins dictionary,  the words "weighed in", means:
give an opinion or enter a discussion or argument
to measure how heavy someone is, esp. before a competition
It is important to note that The Free Dictionary  and the Oxford Learner's Dictionaries has these definitions but with slightly different wording.
In conclusion?
Tumblr media
and have provided appendices at the end of the book that give the Biblical theological foundation for this interpretation.
Tumblr media
Only a filthy peasant has opinions.
An enlightened individual only believes in facts and since they are benevolent, they are imparting their wisdom to others.
This novel seeks to remain true to the sparse facts presented in Genesis (with admittedly significant embellishments)
“Admittedly significant embellishments”?
That’s putting it mildly.
More like “being preachy but insisting that you are only telling people facts.”
interwoven with theological images and metaphors come to life.
Tumblr media
I’m sorry but I can’t take this statement seriously.
Because it reminds me of a scene in the movie The Ref when Gus is talking about how “a complex web of complications need to be weaved and woven into a quilt of some kind.”
Where I engage in flights of fancy,
That’s putting it mildly.
This story never put its feet on the ground.
such as a journey into Sheol,
Pray tell, what is Sheol?
An explanation would be nice because for all we know, Sheol is the name of a cave or a forest.
I seek to use figurative imagery from the Bible, such as “a bed of maggots and worms” (Isa. 14:11) and “the appetite of Sheol” (Isa. 5:14)  and bring them to life by literalizing them into the flesh-eating living-dead animated by maggots and worms.
Let’s break this down, shall we?
Isaiah 5:14 ESV says this:
Therefore Sheol has enlarged its appetite
and opened its mouth beyond measure,
and the nobility of Jerusalem[h] and her multitude will go down,
Isaiah 5 is about the people of Israel who will be punished for their sins. This specific passage is discussing how the sinners are going to die.
Isaiah 14:11 ESV says this:
Your pomp is brought down to Sheol,
   the sound of your harps;
maggots are laid as a bed beneath you,
   and worms are your covers.
Isaiah 14 discusses how Babylon will be destroyed by God.  This specific passage is about how the haughty King of Babylon will perish.
It still doesn’t answer the question of what Sheol is.
If we are still looking at the Bible for an explanation, the NIV translation of Isaiah 5:14 states:
Therefore Death expands its jaws,  opening wide its mouth;
Also, the New International version of Isaiah 14 doesn’t use the word Sheol.
Instead,  it uses the words to the grave.
Based on these translations, one can make the assumption that Sheol is the word for death or grave.
However,  Sheol is a place where the souls of the dead reside.
Let's take a look at this line more closely:
bring them to life by literalizing them into the flesh-eating living-dead animated by maggots and worms.
The Bible having figurative imagery? That is not a groundbreaking revelation. Plenty of Bible scholars have written papers and or books analyzing this.
Figurative language is not supposed to be taken literally. It is used by a writer to convey an idea (example: time is a thief) or to paint a picture in a reader's mind (example: the flowers danced in the wind.)
To take something figurative and make it literal is asinine.
Also, "flesh-eating living-dead"?
I guess the word "zombie" is too plebeian.
Another player that shows up in the story is Leviathan.
“Another player”?
I bethink he is a pretentious rampallian who thinkest by using an antediluvian word maketh him intelligent and literary sir.
“Player” is an old fashioned word for actor.
It DOES NOT mean character.
So in conclusion:
Tumblr media
While I have provided another appendix explaining the theological motif of Leviathan
Translation?
“Behold my dizzying intellect!”
as a metaphor in the Bible for chaos and disorder, I have embodied the sea dragon in this story for the purpose of incarnating that chaos as well.
One word:
Tumblr media
I have also literalized the Mesopotamian cosmology of a three-tiered universe with a solid vault in the heavens, and a flat disc earth supported on the pillars of the underworld, the realm of the dead.
Thanks to Brian Godawa, the words "metaphor" and "literalized" annoy me.
I'd hate to rain on your parade but Mesopotamian mythology isn't the only one who had a three-tiered universe.
Below is an image of the Hebrew cosmology:
Tumblr media
It also has an universe that has three levels: heaven, earth, and the underworld. The earth is a flat disc floating on water with heaven above it and the underworld below it.
If one takes a second look at the picture, you will notice that there are pillars or the foundation of the earth.
In conclusion, Mesopotamian mythology isn't the only one to depict a universe as being composed of three levels.
This appears to be the model assumed by the Biblical writers in many locations (Phil. 2:10; Job 22:14; 37:18; Psa. 104:5; 148:4; Isa. 40:22),
Tumblr media
Jewish people have their own culture. They would not be using Mesopotamian mythology as their yardstick.
so I thought it would be fascinating to tell that story within that worldview unknown to most modern westerners.
You mean a different concept or an idea can be interesting? What a mind boggling revelation!
If I didn't know any better, I’d believe Godawa when he said telling a story from another culture’s point of view would be “fascinating.”
Yet it is painfully obvious that if something doesn't conform to his beliefs, it must be a vile falsehood created by malevolent beings.
The purpose of the Bible is not to support scientific theories or models of the universe,
Actually, the Big Bang Theory does not conflict with the story of creation.
but to tell the story of God through ancient writers. Those writers were people of their times just as we are.
Which is why the absence of Jewish culture is jarring.
Especially since all the "good" characters are Calvinists.
I have also woven together Sumerian and other Mesopotamian mythology in with the Biblical story,
It is randomly inserted  (ex: Pazuz) or the deities are evil fallen angels who are destroying Family Values™ and Corrupting the Children™.
but with this caveat:
"Anything that doesn't conform to my worldviews must be the lies devised by Satan."
Like C.S. Lewis,
Did he compare himself to C.S. Lewis?
….
……….
…………………….
Tumblr media
It is like trying to compare M. Night Shyamalan to Alfred Hitchcock.
Even though one is a hack while the other one is a talented creator.
I believe the primary purpose of mythology is to embody the worldview and values of a culture.
Aside from helping people to understand the world around them and giving them answers to timeless questions such as: Is there life after death? Why does evil exist?
Mythology also provides a form of entertainment and ensures that certain traditions survive.
But all myths carry slivers of the truth and reflect some distorted vision of what really happened.
Tumblr media
This reeks of ethnocentrism!
Sumer’s Noah was Ziusudra, Babylon’s Noah was Utnapishtim, and Akkad’s was Atrahasis. The Bible’s Noah is my standard.
Tumblr media
I'll bring this up if anyone tries to claim that Noah Primeval isn't preachy and ethnocentric.
So my goal was to incorporate real examples of ANE history and myth in subjection to that standard in such a way that we see their “true origin.”
....
You know what?
If someone wrote a Wiccan based fantasy series that demonized Christianity, he would be outraged.
Godawa reiterates his "speculation" that the deities were fallen angels with superhuman abilities that once belonged to God's divine council.
See the appendix at the back for my defense of this interpretation from the Bible.
Tumblr media
I'm not in the mood to read a lengthy appendix that reads like you giving yourself a giant pat on the back. Perhaps that will be a future snark.
Lastly, I have permitted myself to use extra-Biblical Jewish literature from the Second Temple period as additional reference material for my story.
In other words...
He gave himself permission to steal and vandalize a different culture. Isn't that charming?
I use these ancient Jewish sources
I bet many people wished you hadn't.
not because I consider them completely factual or on par with the Bible,
"They are complete heresy. Instead, believe in the teachings of John Calvin."
but simply in an attempt to incarnate the soul of the ancient Hebrew imagination in conversation with the text of Scripture
Like the Yeti, the Hebrew imagination has yet to be found.
rather than imposing my own modern western one upon the text.
...
............
............................
Tumblr media
I am within the tradition of the Church on this since authors of the New Testament as well as early Church Fathers
Just "Church Fathers"?
Tumblr media
Christianity also had Church Mothers.
To name a few: Mary Magdalene, Phoebe, Junia, Lydia, Eudia, Thecla, Syntyche, and Prisca.
and other orthodox theologians in church history respected some of these ancient manuscripts as well.
While the author did the opposite.
Many of these texts from the Second Temple Period, such as Jubilees, Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs or The Life of Adam and Eve, and others found in the Pseudepigrapha, were creative extrapolations of the Biblical text.
I guess the word of the day is "extrapolations".
Extrapolation is defined as "to predict by projecting past experience or known data" or " to infer from values within an already observed interval."
I find it rather disgusting to imply that the Midrash is a product of guesswork or estimates.
Which means whatever the author's personal beliefs are founded in facts.
Tumblr media
These were not intended to deceive or overturn the Bible,
Notice the word "intended".
It infers that the writers weren't deliberately telling lies.
It just happens that they were spreading falsehoods.
but rather to retell Biblical stories with theological amplification and creative speculation
Tumblr media
You see, humans are a curious species. We don't like unanswered questions.
Therefore, we come up with a possible answer or an explanation for a particular event.
The purpose of the Midrash is to provide explanations or to give a story details.
Ever wondered who was Cain's wife? According to Book of Jubilees, she was Cain's sister and her name is Awan.
while remaining true to their interpretation of the Scriptures.
Tumblr media
They weren't providing interpretations to Mesopotamian mythology.
In short, I am not writing Scripture.
Normally, I would believe this.
But subsequent interviews and podcasts along with the preachy messages written in the story belies this statement.
I am not even saying that I believe this is how the story might have actually happened.
Remember when I said to keep something in mind because it will be significant later on?
Well, now it is important.
This statement and the words "Inspired by True Events" are contradictory.
I am simply engaging in a time-honored tradition of the ancient Hebrew culture:
No, no, no!
Do not pass go. Do not collect $200!
I am retelling a Biblical story in a new way to underscore the theological truths within it.
Tumblr media
Godawa only wants to associate with ancient Hebrew culture when it elevates him as a writer and  his stories.
From his remarks, it is obvious that he regards the Midrashes as being subpar bodies of work that will mislead undiscerning readers.
That being said, that won't stop him using such texts in order to receive praise for his "creativity" and be commended  in scholarly circles for using Jewish texts.
This mentality is similar to Rick Riordan's.
In case anyone doesn't know...
Rick Riordan is best known for writing the Percy Jackson series which retold Greek mythology. He then wrote a series based on Norse mythology called Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.
Both series were a hit and he greatly profited from these stories.
After sometime, Riordan made the following statements:
“I didn’t realize some people still worship the old Viking gods. Very strange, and a little scary…In my opinion, the more you learn about the mythology, the more impossible it is to take it seriously as a religion… after you’ve met Odin and Thor in the stories, who in their right mind would ever want to worship them?”
" I love Greek myths, but why anyone would want to worship the Greek pantheon is beyond me. "
"It’s strange to think anyone would still worship the Olympians seriously."
Early in the book, the character Chiron draws a clear distinction between God, capital-G, the creator of the universe, and the Greek gods (lower-case g). Chiron says he does not wish to delve into the metaphysical issue of God, but he has no qualms about discussing the Olympians because they are a “much smaller matter.”
Unsurprisingly, this offended many polytheists.
You might be wondering: what's my point?
To put it simply? Both writers profited from incorporating different mythologies into their stories.
One writer made disparaging remarks about individuals who believe in these deities after becoming a best selling author.
While the other barely concealed their disdain for the source material they used that garnered their popularity and praise from critics.
In conclusion?
Don't build your career on writing stories using different mythologies and deride the believers of said mythos or the very thing that puts money in your bank account.
Then wonder why some people think you are a horse's ass.
The Biblical theology that this story is founded upon is provided in several appendixes at the back of the book for those who are interested in going deeper.
First of all..
Stop peddling your friggin' appendixes.
We get it.
It has citations.
Which means it is supposed to be scholarly...
Therefore... It is deep and elevated literature.
The beauty of fiction
Um, no.
It is not all beautiful.
It can also be bland or terrible.
And in some cases, it is deeply disturbing.
is that we can make assumptions regarding uncertain theological and historical information
Yes, you can.
Up to a point.
The moment when you insist theses assumptions or personal beliefs are based in fact...
Writers like Philippa Gregory and Brian Godawa are born.
without having to prove them one way or another.
You know what also doesn't require proof?
Faith.
The story requires only that we establish continuity within the made up world,
Tumblr media
It is called the suspension of disbelief.
and accepting those assumptions for the sake of the story does not imply theological agreement.
Normally, yes.
But this series makes it abundantly clear that if you don't agree with the political and theological beliefs...
At best, you are country pumpkin. (Yes, he does equate them to being stupider than Ana Steele.)
At worst, you are not only a moron but a depraved degenerate as well.
So, sit back and
Reach for the booze because you are going to need it. Also, make sure that the vomit bucket is in front of you.
let your imagination explore the contours of this re-imagined journey
And before long, wishing that you never did and longing to depart for the Undying Lands.
of one of the most celebrated religious heroes across all times and cultures.
And by the end, you want:
To repeatedly punch the "good" characters in the throat and stab them in the groin. Especially Noah.
The villains to shut up and fuck off. Because they are what a thirteen years old boy would think is edgy.  Especially if said boy was also a Bible thumper.

Hey - love your articles! Quick question on Noah’s flood - how do you respond to Jimmy Akin (catholic apologist ) who says that the flood stories we hear in the americas only happened near bodies of water which would make sense if they were just based in their own experiences of floods - eg tribes that weren’t by water or rivers did not have these stories ! He has an episode in his podcast about it! Thanks
See this link on Amerindian flood traditions: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/flood-myths.html#Navajo
You'll notice their presence throughout tribes of the western United States who inhabited a very arid region. Part of the issue is that there is clearly a genealogical relationship between a wide variety of Amerindian traditions (i.e. the conversion of the bird sent by the flood hero to find land into an otter or equivalent) spread over a vast area, indicating common descent. Influence by missionaries shapes traditions at the most superficial levels- a local deity is replaced by Saint Peter or something like that. The narrative shape of the traditions is its most stable feature.
Moreover, the hypothesis of independent origin simply fails entirely to explain why these traditions have the specific similarities with the biblical narrative that they do, and also fail to explain the larger pattern which holds true for the whole primeval history.
There is also the assumption that any catastrophe would lend itself to the archetypal "cosmic judgment" story, for which there is no justification. There are few to no equivalent stories of a "global earthquake" in regions prone to earthquake, certainly no pattern of stories suggestive of a common tradition of narration.
It is exceptionally easy to find some body of water in some relation to any people group, because human beings die of thirst without regular access to water. But even at the superficial level it seems easy to me to undermine the existence of this alleged correlation.
