It was a rough week, so I’m just recovering/ stabilizing. I’m doing a great job persevering through a difficult fall and the idea that I’m sustaining a respectable performance in a grueling graduate school semester even while facing severe housing insecurity just shows how much I’ve grown, progressed, and developed as an adult.
I just dug an Excel sheet out from my inbox from 2020. It’s a database of Dave Matthews songs, concerts, and performance variations, with statistics like song length, etc. My professor helped me make it for me from DMBalmanac.com in my very first computer programming class back during that year. It all seemed so overwhelming to me at the time, and it’s wild how now it all makes so much more sense to me. I’ll be using it for my final project in a class about advanced Linux/ Ubuntu coding and also discussing it in my reflective portfolio class.
It’s a little interesting to try to reflect on all the knowledge and experiences I’ve had so far in life and try to synthesize that into wisdom about how to move forward making meaning in my professional life. We forget that the vast majority of people do not get this much formal education and do not need, want to, or have to put so much formal thought into what they’re willing to do in exchange for money.
This is basically my first official stab at the first draft of the portfolio paper due next Friday. I have a lot of demonstrated interests in projects that discuss preppiness over the course of my graduate career. There might be a better or alternative word for it, but almost every one of my grad school projects has been related to or discussing nodes of interest adjacent to preppy culture. I have two projects about Dave Matthews Band, a project about The Official Preppy Handbook, an internship about Southern Studies/ southern identity, a project about Taylor Swift and recession pop, and a project about TikTok influencers. A published article about ChatGPT, postmodernism, and epistemology, two technical articles about Big Data for higher education, a GitHub about the competitive programming world, a failed experiment in quantitative finance professional certification. Jobs as a data engineer on AirBNB, cybersecurity/ Silicon Valley, and social justice work. And then maybe a few other projects that I can’t remember as well right now.
Plus, core memories of sitting with a hot Baltimore private school guy at the dinner table on my birthday during my first year of grad school, making the professor so jealous that he paused the lecture to comment on my social life, my relationships with two gay men who took erotic pleasure in yelling at me and mocking me when they saw me trapped in a mental hospital years later, with a woman who saved my skin this morning when she let me borrow $500, with Colin, who would probably be both annoyed and intrigued if he saw a full presentation and context of where he fits into my broader social life and has a lot of thoughts about both the preppy and poor white trash dichotomy, and with Austin, who is like Colin but ten years younger. And with Dustin, and with Massachusetts Nick, the Congressional candidate, and with the British guy, and with Chris the porn star, with the classy Salt Lake City guy who stimulated my sexual imagination, with the woman in Idaho who wanted to have a threesome, with more women at Syracuse, with can’t forget the perfectly normal Rhode Island guy who had a beautiful hockey and Harry Styles date with me last fall and who was one of the most objectively caring people when I was trapped in the hospital this summer, and with various OnlyFans stars.
Colin was one thing that stuck out in this list, and I had this idea to reread or re-watch Hillbilly Elegy by JD Vance and use that as a segue to comment on, explore, find closure about everything Colin and I really have to argue about—preppiness, the white working class, and the dichotomies and pressures between the need for money to survive in capitalism and the importance of looking beyond money to appreciate other things like art and social justice. The fact that I could write an entire book or PhD dissertation if I wanted about what Colin and my ended friendship means to me is pretty cool. And I think I should.
I remember from my 2020 internship that there was sort of this dichotomy between Southern Studies and Appalachian Studies, where Appalachia has more to do with poverty and whiteness. And what does that have to do with place in terms of Colin and my relationship to New England, and then my experience of having the most postmodern experience ever in Los Angeles (cf. Edward Soja and Frederic Jameson’s comments on LA) right at the crux of trying to finish my masters degree. And one could throw in my application to a French university job today, fulfilling a childhood dream, and my work on other themes: sex worker justice, Silicon Valley, and whatever you would call the Computational Law Review and my Word document data structures project.
I learned about security clearances, too, interviewed with a major Big Law firm, experienced the digital nomad lifestyle and the present day iteration of intentional communities/ DAOs. Fantom
Fantom is a high-performance public chain based on DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph), which provides services for enterprises and applications, and aims to solve the scalability and processing time of existing blockchain technologies.
Fantom is powered by Lachesis, an advanced DAG-based aBFT consensus algorithm. In Fantom, each transaction information can become a unit, and the units can be connected to each other arbitrarily to verify their validity. Transactions do not need to be packaged together to complete the transaction, thereby increasing transaction concurrency and volume, and realizing instant transactions.
DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph)
If a directed graph cannot start from a vertex and return to that point through several edges, the graph is a directed acyclic graph (DAG in the figure). In other words, it is  non-cyclic, meaning it can only carry out the one-way flow of information. Compared to the typical chain design of blockchain, DAG can speed up the transaction speed and scalability.
Lachesis aBFT (LCA algorithm, Asynchronous Byzantine Consensus)
Lachesis is a breakthrough aBFT consensus mechanism developed by Fantom. aBFT consensus stands for “asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant” consensus. When a network is said to be “Byzantine Fault Tolerant”, it means that nodes can still reach an agreement on an ordering of events even if part of the network acts maliciously.
Key properties of Lachesis algorithm:
· Asynchronous: Participants have the freedom to process commands at different times.
· Leaderless: All participants are equal and play no special roles.
· Byzantine Fault-Tolerant: Functional even when up to one-third of faulty nodes and malicious nodes are present.
· Instant: The output transaction of Lachesis can be confirmed in 1-2 seconds.
Unlike Proof-of-Work (PoW), Proof-of-Stake (POS) and pBFT, Lachesis nodes do not send blocks to each other. Validators don’t vote on a concrete state of the network; instead, they periodically exchange observed transactions and events with peers.
The event block includes the following information: transaction, smart contract, historical information, and the value of previous transactions.
In general, LCA specifically forms the Lachesis DAG based on the Lachesis protocol. A set of links between event blocks form a DAG, which is a distributed system that stores arbitrary data that cannot be changed. Due to the design of validator node, DAG supports high-speed real-time transactions.

However, DevOps is also undergoing its own transformation, buoyed by the increasing automation and transparency allowed through the rise of declarative infrastructure, microservices and serverless technologies. This is cloud-native DevOps. Not a tool or a new methodology, but an evolution of the longstanding practices that further align developers and operations teams — but now also expanding to include security teams (DevSecOps), business teams (BizDevOps) and networking (NetDevOps).

Is the enterprise really ready?
The bleeding edge can bleed too much for the likings of enterprise customers, said James Ford, an analyst and consultant.
“It’s tempting to live by mantras like ‘wow the customer,’ ‘never do what customers want (instead build innovative solutions that solve their need),’ ‘reduce to the max,’ … and many more,” said Bernd Greifeneder, CTO and co-founder of Dynatrace . “But at the end of the day, the point is that technology is here to help with smart answers … so it’s important to marry technical expertise with enterprise customer need, and vice versa.”
How the enterprise adopts new ways of working will affect how startups ultimately fare. The container hype has cooled a bit and technologists have more solid viewpoints about how to build out architecture.
One notable trend to watch: The role of cloud services through projects such as Firecracker. AWS Lambda is built on Firecracker, the open-source virtualization technology, built originally at Amazon Web Services . Firecracker serves as a way to get the speed and density that comes with containers and the hardware isolation and security capabilities that virtualization offers. Startups such as Weaveworks have developed a platform on Firecracker. OpenStack’s Kata containers also use Firecracker.
“Firecracker makes it easier for the enterprise to have secure code,” Ford said. It reduces the surface security issues. “With its minimal footprint, the user has control. It means less features that are misconfigured, which is a major security vulnerability.”
Enterprise startups are hot. How they succeed will determine how well they may provide a uniqueness in the face of the ever-consuming cloud services and at-scale startups that inevitably launch their own services. The answer may be in the middle with purpose-built architectures that use open-source components such as Firecracker to provide the capabilities of containers and the hardware isolation that comes with virtualization.

TRON Acquired BitTorrent for USD$140 Million, Resourced and Rational
When Bitcoin first became known as a P2P digital asset in 2009, nobody expected that cryptocurrency could become the next big thing to shake up the entire capital market.
The boom in cryptocurrency from 2017 to 2018 brought under the spotlight blockchain technology. It is a key concept of Bitcoin which is in essence a decentralized database. The extensive popularity of Bitcoin made known to people the technical framework and prospective application of blockchain, its underlying technology.
While cryptocurrency is much sought-after, it is also caught up in controversies. After nine years of development, the market price of Bitcoin soared to a highest of USD$20,000, 2600 times its initial value. Such a drastic increase is also denounced as a bubble. However, it is undeniable that blockchain technology has already won the favor of technological giants.
The technology has already been applied to charitable fund-raising, food traceability, residential rental management, supply chain finance and other fields by leading Chinese fintech businesses such as Ant Financial, Tencent, JD and Creditease. This vision resonates with BitTorrent, a company that may appear unfamiliar to most people today, but the mention of “BT seeds” and “BT download” would definitely bring back some memories of Internet users. At its peak in 2006, BitTorrent occupied up to 70% of the Internet traffic. It is the prototype of almost all downloader software we use today.
BitTorrent is a content distribution protocol (CDN) and a P2P file transmission protocol based on the TCP/IP protocol. It was created by software engineer Bram Cohen in 2003. It adopts an efficient software distribution system and P2P technology to share large files and allows users to provide upload services like a newly placed node in the network. Its biggest feature is that the more the downloads, the greater availability of bandwidth and the faster the speed. Central to P2P technology is the nonexistence of server—all downloaders are both the client and the server.
BitTorrent was even named by the Fortune magazine as one of the four new technologies shaping the development of the Internet and is seen as a key technology representing the future of a wireless broadband Internet. However, its development hasn’t always been smooth. It seems to have faded out of our sight after its peak and is merely staying afloat. This is because, for over a decade, the business pattern of BitTorrent couldn’t sustain a healthy development.
It is said in the Capital Gamethat to succeed, you need to do three things—what other couldn’t think of, what others couldn’t do, and what other don’t want to do.
BitTorrent was born because Bram Cohen though of what other couldn’t—he realized that defects in bandwidth and storage technologies undermined the efficiency of data transmission. But in 2018, bandwidth and storage issues no longer exist thanks to technological advancement, and people now prefer to use legal channels to download and watch videos online.
Nevertheless, BitTorrent still has its influence, though it is more or less forgotten or overshadowed by other rising technologies. As the pioneer of its kind, BitTorrent is relatively different from the dominant server-based architecture today. It takes into consideration how it can best utilize the decentralized network architecture where all machines function as nodes to share, store and backup data.
BitTorrent is impacting and reshaping the current network behind the curtains. As a quick example, decentralization, core concept of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies based on it, has been an intrinsic feature of BitTorrent since more than a decade ago.
This conception of decentralization is in line with TRON, which resulted in the acquisition of BitTorrent for USD$140 million by Justin and his blockchain startup.
As to why TRON wants to buy BitTorrent, here are the reasons. First, TRON’s rapid development in less than one year inevitably evoked people’s attention which in turn exposed its issues faster, one of which is technical theft of FileCoin and Ethereum. The integration of BitTorrent will definitely give TRON more technical expertise.
Second, the P2P architecture of BitTorrent suits the needs of TRON’s development. BitTorrent’s 170 million users will also bring TRON more inflow despite increasing cost of client acquisition. BitTorrent’s products include its client and BitTorrent Now which focuses on video, audio and other creative contents.
Third, TRON wants to gain more network advantage. According to BitTorrent, its protocol normally supports over 40% of Internet flow, which will turn into TRON’s competitive edge.
Also, though BitTorrent allegedly has no plan to alter its business pattern, impose any service charge or to embark on cryptocurrency mining now or in the near future, this is an opportunity to fully bring its technical strengths into play and explore its business pattern.

But faced with the realities, it still needs a clear development path to stay afloat.
TRON’s appearance opened a new chapter to BitTorrent’s future development, where they can realize win-win cooperation based on their shared passion for decentralization. It is said that to succeed, a business, especially a startup, must possess strong creativity for products and services as well as for monetizing them. A business is prone to fail without either of them, which is true of both TRON and BitTorrent.
