Here's an internet hidden gem for y'all
So I'm fucking around in the network section of Firefox's developer's tools because I'm taking a Django course and I'm looking at the instructor's samples as part of a lecture and I spot this little thing:
and I'm like ????? Sir what are you doing in my browser???
The instructor of this course likes making little references all the time (for example he often uses "42" as a value because of Hitchhiker's), so my first thought was that he is also a Terry Pratchett fan and added him as a value in his sample code, but what is "x-clacks-overhead"?
Well, let me share with you what I found on the X-Clacks-Overhead website:
In Sir Terry's novel "Going Postal", the story explains that the inventor of the Clacks - a man named Robert Dearheart, lost his only son in a suspicious workplace accident, and in order to keep the memory of his son alive, he transmitted his son's name as a special operational signal through the Clacks to forever preserve his memory
[...]
As a way to preserve the memory of Sir Terry Pratchett, the users of the SubReddit for the Discworld series came up with the idea behind the X-Clacks-Overhead HTTP Header. It allows web authors to silently commemorate someone through the use of a non-invasive header that can be transmitted from server to server, or server to client without operational interference.
[...]
At the time of writing, Mozilla.org (makers of the Firefox web browser), the makers of Debian (a popular Linux Operation System), and Xml.com (a major repository of standards information) are examples of some of the backbones of the Internet who transmit the Signal "GNU Terry Pratchett".
It's not that the instructor is making a hidden little reference to Terry Pratchett. It's so much more than that. And I think it's beautiful :')
EDIT: There's more information in the GNU Terry Pratchett website if anyone is interested

Ok, so I'll admit SSL is a slight blind spot for me because I have virtually no use case for it*, so maybe someone else knows but like
Chrome recently started putting a caution nag on http sites on private browsing windows to warn that you that it "doesn't support a secure connection"
But... I was under the impression that incognito browsing sessions were supposed to not track history locally -- and that's it. Why the hell are they acting like it's some secure browsing paradigm?
Anyway, an HTTP server is what I want to run, not an HTTPS server. I don't need repute, I don't want anyone establishing a trust relationship with my server because they SHOULDN'T trust my server, and the modern push to HTTPS first and foremost is weird!
*I have a VPN server running so I can remotely manage my server locally, and that uses its own encryption; however, nothing about my web server should behave differently for different users, no data there is private, and even the most I'd want to do - keep thousands of strangers at a time from inadvertently ddos'ing my filestore to download anime - can be accomplished through http basic auth since I there's no private data accessible from the web whatsoever

For this year's October drawing challenge I'll be drawing my characters I and O going through some HTTP status codes, mostly client errors
I got the idea some months back and thought it would be fun to interpret these in wacky ways

This URL decodes into https://[blogURL].tumblr.com/search/#[tag1], #[tag2]
However due to # being used for moving scrolling the page to an element with an id, the # must be encoded. I don't know why the space and the comma need to be encoded though.
figured out a way you can search for posts that are tagged TWO things on a blog!!! feeling clever
for anyone else who didn’t know, this is the format!:
https://[blogURL].tumblr.com/search/%23[tag1]%2C%20%23[tag2]
remove the [brackets] when using it!

most funniest sudden deviation from a youtuber’s typical video lineup i’ve seen in recent memory

like bro imagine being SO pissed at the direction a show had taken that you have to momentarily quit spongeposting in order to talk about it for two whole hours. king shit
#pinyatalk#yes. ALL her content is spongebob. except for just that ONE video.#even tho i never watched arcane season 2 (i heard some Things about it that made me turn away from it lol) that essay was still utter PEAK#REALLY good political analysis and critique of themes and characters and such. GOD. plz watch itttt#she may be a spongepilled squarepantsmaxxer but she talks about this shit like she’s known it for yearsss#i haven’t watched the spongebob analyses yet tho. though if the arcane video was peak then all her spongebob stuff must be peak as well…#anyways here’s the videooo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAgP6V--qYM)

So, this is probably more information than you bargained for, but no, affiliate links are unrelated to this.
Source
So the affiliate link is putting a parameter at the end of the url which ties that link to a specific person. As an example, if I have a Barnes & Noble affiliate account I can generate links to Barnes & Noble products with my account in the parameters and I get a commission if you use my link to purchase that product.
What href.li is doing is hiding the referer:
Source
So when you click on a link the referer gets populated with the website that linked or included the resource.
Without href.li:
User clicks link on Tumblr
HTTP Referer header is set to Tumblr
Request goes to destination
Destination sees that request as coming from Tumblr and can track that fact
With href.li:
User clicks link on Tumblr
HTTP Referer header is set to Tumblr
Request goes to href.li
HTTP Referer header is set to href.li
Request goes to destination
Destination sees that request as coming from href.li and can track that fact
So yeah, not related to the affiliate link thing.
It is nice that Tumblr is using href.li to anonymize outgoing links. I think it is a win for users.
But... it does have the side effect mentioned previously that contributes to the myth that you can't convert Tumblr users into subscribers/customers/whatever, which is bad for Tumblr keeping the lights on.
Holy shit I think I just cracked the code of why people think you can’t sell things on Tumblr 😭
