The Cherry on Top

A/N: A white day present written with @x-noechi-x in mind, but anyone can enjoy it. 

Synopsis: After the fiasco that was valentine's day, you never expected to find a trail of little things leading you to the arms of Hyoma Chigiri.

You had the biggest crush on Hyoma Chigiri. He was a sweet guy, although a little arrogant at times. Even in his moments of being what others might call a douche canoe, he was still quite sweet towards you. You’d help him with math problems and he’d be your partner in P.E. Before you knew it, it was the spring of your final year in high school. This year you were bound and determined to make your feelings known on Valentines Day. 

Exhausted. That was what you are and will continue to be now. Valentines was a huge fiasco. It wasn't enough that you had a hard time making karinto manju look pretty but you ended up getting tiny little oil splatter burns from frying. Then your box wasn't big enough for the treats and the box of his favorite tea. And you forgot his locker combination. Then to top it off, once you got into his locker, he was absent from classes. At this point you just wanted to cry. All that effort and it seemed like it was all going to go to waste.

The next day, you sit at your desk still feeling defeated when you see movement out of the corner of your eye. The red panther had returned and was eating his present. “Hey darlin,” he mumbles through a mouthful of the treat. “Was this from you?”

Suddenly there's a sweet in your mouth. It tasted at least 5 times better than it did the day you made them.

You nod. “Yeah, sorry if they’re not as good as the ones from the bakery.”

He looks at your hands, seeing little red dots. “Wait, you made these? At home?”

You nod again. “Yeah,” You reply, now fully turned towards him.

“Have you tried them?

“I tested one the day I made them, they were good.”

“Thank you,” he whispers before heading to his seat.

The next month moves by quickly. Chigiri still opts to be your P.E partner every day. You still help him with math, though these sessions are happening just about every day now too. When he’s not on the soccer pitch,  he’s doing homework with you. Sometimes you both go to a cafe to work, other times you are at one of your houses. Sometimes the study sessions run super late and he would walk you home, always with an arm around your waist in a protective way. Still, the protective touch makes the butterflies rise in your belly. 

You never expected to get anything from anyone, especially in the romantic sense. Your friends hand you the little cards with a piece of store bought candy taped to it as you walk into school. Arriving at your locker, you sigh. When you open the door, there is a small box and a card. Quickly you pick it up and open it. Inside, there are some homemade chocolates each with a sakura pink design. The card attached reads:

You got used to the attention. It felt good, lovely even. That is until about March 10. You approach him in the courtyard at lunch to confirm the study session at his place.

“Sorry pretty girl, I… I can’t.”

“Oh, okay. Maybe tomorrow?” You ask, trying to hide the hurt in your voice.

“Maybe, I’m really busy this week.”

All you do is nod and head back to the classroom. This strange behavior of his lasts for a few days. Normally this kind of thing wouldn't hurt except that now the two of you have gotten really close. The twinge of heartbreak overflows into White Day. 

Your curiosity is at its peak, so you think about it and the only place it could be was the field that's surrounded by the track. You run out there and scan the field for anything odd or out of place. That’s when one of the guys from the soccer team comes up to you. “You must be y/n, yeah? This is for you.” The guy hands you another small box and a card. You open the box and find a tube of your favorite lip balm.

My Princess, 

I made a scavenger hunt for you on this day of White.

When you're ready for your second clue, come to where I make balls take flight

I apologize for making you wait this long. But I want to do this right. 

This person was going to ask you to leave school to go get a clue? Now this was just silly. Of course you would do it. The Byrd was the fancy bakery actress from the cafe where you and Chigiri would sometimes go to do work… Then the thought hits you… maybe its Chigiri sending you on this wild goose chase. You doubt it, he has no spare time for dates between soccer and tutoring. 

My Princess,

By now you’ve met a friend of mine to pass along the word.

Clue number three will wait for thee at the cafe table by the Byrd.

When you get to the cafe, there's a small box and a card on the table that you usually sit at. You pick it up and inside the box is a gift card for your favorite meal at the cafe. As you head to place your order, you read the card.

My Princess,

You’ve made this far. Not a surprise ‘cuz its you.

Your final task to find love true

Is meet me where our favorite tea can brew

You jump into his arms and place a loving kiss on his lips. “Happy White Day.”

Now you know it's Chigiri. Not many people will drink hot tea outside their home. Especially Chigiri, he is very particular when it comes to his favorite tea. You grab your take away order and head to his house. When you arrive, you don't even have to knock on the door. He’s waiting on the stoop with two travel mugs of tea and a plate of karinto manju.

“I knew you’d just go do the entire thing all at once. Was it too easy?” he asks, finger combing his cherry red hair behind his ear.

“You threw me for a loop… I didnt think…” Your words trail off as he puts a finger to your lips. Chigiri pulls you into his arms with a gentle squeeze.

“I didn’t want to break out plans but you deserved a nice White Day gift,” he whispers, kissing the shell of your ear. When he pulls away you nearly whine. “Happy White day, y/n,” he whispers. Then he shows you a final small box, containing a pendant of his initials on a thin gold chain. “Whatcha think? Did I do good? Can I call you mine?”
