It didn’t come out this year, and it’s poetry not proze, but I got Rupi Kaur’s Milk and Honey and The Sun and her Flowers for my birthday and both are beautiful and I wholeheartedly recommend them.

Game of the year:

I don’t play games much, but I’m gonna be really corny here and say I quite enjoyed playing Among Us :)

New years resolutions:

I didn’t really have any new years resolutions, I never do. I kinda just take the year as it comes. If I don’t make any resolutions I can’t disappoint myself :)

Very true @noerttiprinsessa... I proper ugly cried when they played Rise the other week. Literally, first note I went “Oh no” and just sobbed uncontrollably ‘til they started the next song. It honestly never ceases to amaze me what beauty lies within those goofy idiots :’D When they started playing En Route though I was just like “Of course Paavo plays the sexy intro... Of course he does” XD

(Also sorry to be a pedant but “fat chance” is a nicer way of saying “fuck all chance” XD It’s not a synonym for “high chance”, despite that making more logical sense... English real dumb...)

This is often used as a term of endearment (for partners, children, babies, animals...) just as much as it’s used to describe an actual nose that happens to be small and cute.

hippulat vinkuen // with “hippulas” squeaking, in a hurry (colloq.) (humoristic/cliche)

The word “hippula” has many interpretations: decorations or other objects on a sleigh or carriage, testicles, shoe strings made of leather, slippers.

koko konkkaronkka // the whole group/gang/crowd

This expression is a loan from the Swedish “hela konkarongen”.

tenkkapoo // a problem, a dilemma, a Situation™

Another loan from Swedish, where “tänka på” means “to think about”.

This is one of those cliched stock phrases, like in English you have stuff like “tall, dark and handsome” and “young, wild and free”.

Aivan varmasti pääset mukaan, sinähän olet niin fiksu ja filmaattinen! // Of course you’ll get in/will be included/get to go along, you’re so smart and cinematic!

Älä itke ruma lapsi, ota rusina. // Don’t cry, ugly child; have a raisin.

This is a saying, of origins unknown(?), that you can say to anyone who’s disappointed/upset/frustrated/etc. It’s used in a joking manner. There are also multiple other versions of this saying, including:

Älä itke ruma lapsi, huomenna ostetaan naamari. // Don’t cry, ugly child; tomorrow we’ll buy a mask (for you). Älä itke ruma lapsi. Maailma muuttuu paremmaksi. Arguably the best sarcastic comeback to anyone complaining excessively and/or about an insignificant matter or being overdramatic. Often accompanied by an eye-roll. (For maximum level sarcasm, you can drag the tip of your index finger down one cheek in imitation of the path of a teardrop as you’re saying this.)

Ei siinä kauan nokka/nenä tuhissut. // A beak/nose didn’t snuffle long at it/doing it. It didn’t take long.

Ei siinä kauaa nokka tuhissu ku me vietiin ne pahvilaatikot sinne ulos ja saatin koko homma pakettiin. (colloq.) // It didn’t take long when we took those cardboard boxes outside there and wrapped it all up (= ended the whole thing with that).

pitää mölyt mahassaan // to keep the noises/clamours inside one’s stomach, to stay silent and swallow one’s anger, to not criticise/call names/complain

Itse kukin voisi oppia pitämään mölyt mahassaan! // Each could learn to swallow their anger and stay silent!

Hyvä Tuomas joulun tuopi, paha Nuutti pois sen viepi. //Good Thomas brings Christmas, bad Canute/Knut takes it away. 

This saying refers to Thomas the Apostle and Saint Canute, King of Denmark.

In Finland, December 21 (the Feast of St. Thomas) has popularly been considered to be the day when Christmastime begins. January 13 (St. Knut’s Day) on the other hand is considered to be the day when Christmastime ends (historically, Jan 13 was the day that marked the end of Christmas Peace according to Nordic legislation).

Jaakko heittää kylmän kiven veteen. // James throws a cold stone into the water.

This phrase/concept makes reference to James the Greater, one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus.

The metaphorical throwing of the stone happens on July 25 (the feast day of St. James), which is considered to be the day when the weather starts cooling and the swimming season begins to draw to a close.

Kuu kiurusta kesään, puoli kuuta peipposesta, västäräkistä vähäsen, pääskysestä ei päivääkään. // The Eurasian skylark, a month till summer; the chaffinch, half a month; the white wagtail, a little bit; the swallow, not a single day.

This old saying/rhyme references various birds commonly seen in Finland and supposes that when you first see each of these birds, you can guess how long it will be until summer comes.

Some of the people speaking Norwegian on these language apps sound so happy XD Jeg leEEEEEEEEEER! Vi.. LEEEEER! :DDDDDDDDD Hahaha I think being a native speaker gives you most right to speak shit about it :P I’ll dump all over English at any given opportunity XD But yeah German...... I want to be able to speak German so badly (and I can understand chunks of it) but whenever it comes to stringing grammatically correct sentences together I just want to scream XD With Finnish I kinda feel like it’s okay if I get something slightly wrong, but with German I’m always worried I’m gonna offend someone’s nan or something.

Favorite time of the year: summer, mostly because I get cold really easily and in summer it's generally warm. Also because things are green and there's sunlight and stuff. I don't enjoy the heatwaves we've been getting the past few years when it's just too hot to do anything at all, though, those aren't fun

Comfort food: my mom's creamy rainbow trout pasta. I haven't had it in a while, tho. I could do it myself, it's not that complex of a recipe (it's very much a "just throw things together" kind of weekday food), but I just can't be bothered to cook a lot anyway and fish spoils fast so I'd have to like, buy fish and make it immediately and it's just overall a bit of a hassle so I don't tend to make it myself. Also, freshly baked bread.

Favorite drink: I don't know, really. Tea and hot cocoa are pretty nice. Also then there's this brand of sodas that's basically only sold in Åland (there might be a few places that sell it in mainland Finland, but I haven't seen it anywhere so idk) made with real fruit juice and I really like some flavors of it, but it's a rare treat since, like I said, you can't usually really get it here.

Current favorite song: Honestly idk, I haven't listened to a lot of music in a while? I guess I'm kind of vibing with Clannad's "Strange Land" (from the RoS soundtrack) but like, idk. Also I've had "Never Set the Cat on Fire" (it's not really about violence against cats, it's more about scifi, and it's really just meant to be funny anyway) stuck in my head all morning but I think that's classified as an earworm, not a current favorite.

Favorite song: Honestly I'm just really bad at naming my favorite anything when asked, I seriously don't know

Langblr Secret Santa

Hey @noerttiprinsessa I’m your @langblrsecretsanta​ this year :D

I was told you like cooking and baking so I looked for some christmas recipes in your target languages! (Except for Finnish because I don’t speak a word of it, please forgive me qwq)

This is probably the best thing the Netherlands have ever come up with! Pepernoten! (I actually mean Kruidnoten but everyone calls them pepernoten) They are made of speculaas and are very popular for Sinterklaas (I’m kind of addicted to them).

Ingrediënten

250 gr zelfrijzend bakmeel

125 gr donkere basterdsuiker

4 theelepels koek en speculaaskruiden

snufje zout

100 gr koude boter

90 ml melk

Bereiding 

Verwarm de oven op 170 graden. Roer het bakmeel, basterdsuiker, speculaaskruiden en een snufje zout door elkaar in een kom. Voeg de koude boter en de melk toe en kneed tot een stevige bal. Kneed niet te lang, want het deeg mag niet te warm worden.

Bekleed een bakplaat met een stuk bakpapier. Draai balletjes (ongeveer 70) van het deeg en leg ze op de bakplaat. Je hoeft ze niet plat te gaan drukken want dat gaat vanzelf in de oven.

Zet de pepernoten ongeveer 25 min in de oven. Als ze uit de oven komen zullen ze nog wat zacht aanvoelen maar als ze afgekoeld zijn dan worden ze knapperig

zelfrijzend bakmeel: self-rising what now??? You might be wondering what this is. Zelfrijzend bakmeel is something that you can’t get in most countries. In the Netherlands it’s very common to find flour in the supermarket that has already added yeast or baking powder. That way you don’t need to add anything to it and can immediately use it for baking. You can easily make it yourself! For 500gr of flour you should add one bag of baking powder (15gr). So for this recipe, all you need is half a bag for 250gr. :)

Special tip from me: Try covering your pepernoten in chocolate! Trust me you won’t regret it :))))

Now on to Norwegian! (I apologize if I misspelled anything, I only speak Swedish xD)

In Norway it’s very popular to bake ‘Lussekatter’ for the Lucia festival which is celebrated on the 13th of december in all of Scandinavia! It’s the festival of light and there is a big ceremony with lots of singing! :)

Ingredienser

Antall stykker: 20

150gr smør

5dl (500ml) melk

50gr gjær

1gr safran

150gr sukker

1/2 ts salt

2 ts kardemomme

13dl (~780gr) hvetemel 

For pensling og pynt:

1stk sammenvispet ägg

1dl (~60gr) rosiner

Slik gjør du det:

Smelt smør og tilsett melk. Ha i safran og sett til side. Smuldre gjær i en bakebolle og rør ut i litt av den lunkne melkeblandingen. Bland i resten av væsken.

Rør i mel, kardemomme, salt og sukker. Bruk en kjøkkenmaskin med eltekrok om du har det. La deigen heve under et klede eller plast på et lunt sted til den er dobbel størrelse, ca. 30 minutter.

Strø litt mel på bordet, elt deigen godt. Del deigen i biter og trill dem til lange fingertykke pølser. Del i ca. 20 biter. Form ulike lussekatter, bare fantasien setter grenser.

Legg de ferdig formede lussekattene på stekeplate med bakepapir, og la dem heve under et klede eller plast på et lunt sted i minst 15 minutter. Sett stekeovnen på 250 °C.

Pensle lussekatter med sammenvispet egg og pynt med rosiner. Stek midt i ovnen i 5 - 8 minutter til de blir gylne. La dem avkjøles litt på rist før servering. De smaker aller best litt lunkne.

You might have noticed that some ingredients are given in decilitres (dl)! That is because in Scandinavia it is very common to have one of these things at home:

These little spoons make it very easy to measure ingredients in decilitres because you just need to take a decilitre spoonful of it. However because in the rest of the world this isn’t very common, I provided the amount in grams or millilitres :)

Thank you guys so much for the support on my last post! I have a few stories and requests sitting in my little ideas book so hopefully I’ll get them out in the next few days, I’ve made a list of the ideas I’m working on at the moment, let me know if you have anymore ideas!

Five checking on his siblings in the middle of the night, checking their pulses and breathing, holding their hands going out to Bens statue ect to try and remind himself that they’re not dead and he’s not in the apocalypse

Five decides to take a mission solo and gets heavily injured but decides not to tell anyone, he stumbles back into the academy and goes to make a coffee and just passes out and everyone freaks out and tries to help him

Five falls asleep one afternoon just like nap times cause he’s a child and wakes up, freaking out cause everything’s too quiet and for the past 58 years he’s be surrounded by noise so he goes and asks Vanya to play violin for her and they find comfort in each other

When they were younger Reginald would seriously push Five to the extremes with using his power which would result in Five like exhausted to the point where he would be sick and couldn’t walk properly because his knees would buckle under his weight, Luther would often walk into the little room where Reginald would leave Five to recover and pick up his brother and carry him back up to his room and look after him
