3. How do you know if your writing is “in character”?
Oh, you don’t. writing in character comes down to a vibe more than a science- and yes, that can be stressful. Trying to figure out Kotaro in the NOfA AU was a pain because i couldn’t find a way to characterize him as an adult that felt both recognizable and made sense with him having a completely different life in canon. I kept swinging too widely to either side thinking about what readers would think and then Gentry told me to stop stressing and go with what i found most logical or that clicked most with the rest of the story.
So, you can’t really know. All you can do- what i focus on, at least- is are my favorite parts of the character there? would i be frustrated if i read it from another author? am i unfairly bashing on characters bc i dont like them? I use those questions to sort of check myself. Once you figure out what vibe you like, you accept that some people wont like it, but stick to it as much as you can in a story to be consistent, and viola. mostly in character.
4. Where do your story ideas come from?
Anywhere, everywhere. Movies and other books inspire aus, sometimes i dream of ideas, sometimes a post or ‘up for grabs’ au will connect with me. I’ll look at a story idea i have, and ask ‘what if this went different’ and follow the rabbit hole to a new story.
frequently i come up with an idea by asking ‘ok what haven’t i seen yet?’ and just going with the craziest idea for that. That’s why, btw, i like using things from Vigs and the Big Three so much, there’s a lot of content less used for them i can bring in new ways.
and sometimes i just wanna straight shot of fluff and parental love or some platonic cuddling and cant be sated by reading so. that happens too.
8. What is a scene you wrote that you are most proud of?
im gonna sound like a shill but it’s still the Inspirited Tree Fight in MoL. But since i’ve waxed poetical about that before, I will say i am also rather proud of the party scene in NOfA au. I wanted to get a lot of worldbuilding down- what it’s like for Toshinori as a quirkless hero, how the commission works, Endeavor as Number One, and i also wanted to give a good picture of how his relationship with both David and Inko worked. The family and the career changes are the two biggest parts of the au, so i knew i had to get them both explained well after the pitch of the first chapter, and i’m pretty happy with how it turned out
