Arin Mirkan was the legend of Kobane. Sometimes in history the role of an individual can be as essential as a whole group. According to various media reports Arin detonated a bomb when she knew she was going to be captured by ISIS because she did not wanted to be captured alive by them but there was a lot more in this action than has been reported.

The account which I have heard from several people- all of whom are still alive- and were on the ground at the time is a little bit different from what has been reported in the media. At the time of battle for Kobane, #ISIS fighters had seized part of the strategic #Mishtenur hill overlooking the city of Kobane.

At that time the number of Kurdish fighters who were still on the ground and had not been killed or captured -in that area -by ISIS was less than a few dozens. At this time there was a small meeting in which people concluded that they did not have enough forces and they should tactically retreat and wait for reinforcement, At this meeting Arin disagrees and announces that retreat would be strategically wrong and she would hold the fort for as long as she can.

A few hours later when the news of her death reaches other fighters, they decide to come back and they are supported with reinforcement shortly thereafter. I should mention that at the same time in the surrounding Kobane villages several fights were still ongoing but hearing of Arin's brave act creates a spirit of solidarity for other #YPG fighters to take the city house by house and neighborhood by neighborhood. In a situation where many people had lost heart she lifted up their spirit by her courage. In reality in the beginning YPG did not even have control over even one neighborhood in Kobane and they only controlled a few houses.

The past two days have seen the continuation and intensification of the Turkish military campaign against the people of Northern Syria. Airstrikes have hit military and civil institutions and villages along the border with Turkey have been shelled. The death toll is reaching 100 people. Despite destroying two Turkish tanks the defence forces are massively outgunned.

A state of high alert has been called. In the cities many of the public offices are closed, the patients in the hospitals have been moved as they are potential targets, life goes on but people are watching the skies nervously. The morning after the air strikes on Xaraco over 3000 people of all ages and from all ethnic groups climbed a mountain to bear witness to the latest Turkish attack. In front of an American military representative YPJ spokeswoman Nisreen Abdullah demanded meaningful action from the international community and threatened the immediate cessation of operations against ISIS in Raqqa if this was not forthcoming.

The defence forces in Rojava are calling for a social media campaign to help them. It's not much but it helps to place pressure on Turkey and the governments who are happy to talk big about fighting ISIS but unwilling to support those fighting and dying to defeat them and replace their rule with one based on democracy, tolerance, and feminism. Dopo i bombardamenti dell’aviazione turca che nelle primissime ore di martedì hanno colpito Shengal, in Iraq, e Karaçokê, in Rojava (dove i jet di Ankara hanno sganciato 26 bombe sul centro di comando delle Ypg, uccidendo 20 combattenti, ferendone altri 18 e distruggendo il media center dell’organizzazione), dal Rojava si è levato un appello alla mobilitazione internazionale contro l’offensiva di Erdogan. Quello di martedì è stato un attacco feroce che ha messo a nudo una volta di più la strategia e gli interessi della Turchia, segnando una nuova accelerazione nell’aggressione di Erdogan contro la rivoluzione del Rojava. Di fronte all’accerchiamento delle Forze Democratiche Siriane su Raqqa la Turchia è intervenuta per cercare di paralizzare l’operazione per liberare la città, bombardando un centro strategico per il coordinamento delle operazioni contro l’Isis. Timida per ora la reazione della coalizione internazionale che combatte l’Isis, che ha ammonito Erdogan in seguito ai raid ma non ha fatto nulla per prevenire quest’aggressione. Dopo i bombardamenti la tensione e l’allerta in Rojava restano alte: nella giornata di ieri le forze turche hanno condotto nuovi attacchi contro diversi villaggi del Rojava (in corso ancora oggi), cui è seguita la risposta delle Ypg, che stanno combattendo duramente per bloccare i tentativi di invasione di Ankara. Manifestazioni di protesta sono esplose in diverse parti della Siria del Nord. Da ieri è in corso un tweetstorm con l’hashtag #NoFlyZone4Rojava, un’iniziativa che sta raccogliendo un vasto sostegno per sostenere il Rojava e condannare la barbarie delle aggressioni turche. L’appello è a fare pressione su Ankara con un’ampia campagna di mobilitazione, protestando sotto le ambasciate turche, denunciando il silenzio mediatico e politico su questi attacchi e la complicità dei governi europei con il regime di Erdogan, portando l’urgenza di istituire una no-fly zone sul Nord della Siria.
