This past weekend I got to wine taste at @belvinowinery in Temecula, California. This boutique winery is so cute and has some decent wines. Right now they are doing outdoor wine flights for $25. All the tables are at least 6 feet apart or you can bring a blanket to social distance on the grassy lawn. They even have a cute house you can Airbnb to stay the night. I felt totally safe wine tasting there during these COVID times. . . I really enjoyed a lot of their white wines, especially the Field Blend and their Rose. I have now completed a little over two weeks of distance learning and I’ve definitely learned a lot in a short amount of time. Distance learning is HARD. Would it be easier to teach normal in a classroom? Yes. But it’s more important to stay safe! . . Here are a few Distance Learning Tips I’ve picked up in the past week *Stretch and take a quick walk around your room any chance you get. *If you can get two monitors so you can have you Google Meet/Zoom on one screen and what you are working on on another. *Be flexible. Technology issues will happen, to both you and the students. Just make the best of it and it’s a good bonding experience for you and your class. Communication is KEY. *Figure our ways to get to know your students. You still want to form that bond with them. I try to talk to one or two each day as they log on. *Still have standards and order. The kids NEED structure. They haven’t had it since March. So stick to a routine if you can and get them back in the groove. *Drink a ton of water. You need to stay hydrated especially with the consistent talking and teaching. *Make sure to give yourself some YOU time. You can’t be a good teacher without making sure your health is in order. It is okay to not answer parent emails right away. It’s okay if every lesson isn’t perfect. It’s okay to give you AND your students a break. The last stop on our California tour is San Diego. I LOVE visiting San Diego especially in the summer. Today was schedule pick up day for the 7th graders at my school! They get to come and drive through to get their schedule and books for the year. It’s so weird having the start of school so different. It will be interesting to see how different this school year is. . . PS this photo was taken in the Japanese Garden at the Huntington Library. The Huntington Library is one of my favorite places to escape to in Southern California. Not only do they have a ton of amazing gardens, they have a couple museums on the property as well. In one of the buildings, they have the Gutenberg Bible (one of the first printed books)! Went to Transylvania... Didn’t get bitten by Dracula! . . Did you know Transylvania is a real place? This region of Romania contains several awesome castles! It is scattered with medieval towns and Gothic fortresses. The castle pictured, Peles Castle was once the residence of the Romanian king and is still technically a residence of the king. The more famous castle of the region, Bran Castle, is also called Dracula’s Castle due to its associations with Vlad the Impaler. Vlad was often called Vlad Dracula due to his reputation of cruelty. Thus, this inspired the name Dracula for Bram Stoker’s book! . . Bran Stoker used Transylvania as the setting for Dracula. History lesson time! Last summer I had the privilege of visiting Belgrade, Serbia. As a historian the history of Belgrade and Serbia was very interesting to me. Belgrade has seen a lot of crazy times and has changed hands frequently throughout history. Ruled by the Romans, the Slavs, the Byzantine Empire, the Franks, and many more in between, one of its prime times was during the rule of the Ottoman Empire and later Yugoslavia. Throughout its history it has been through 115 wars! Present day, it is the main city of Belgrade and holds the seat of government power. . . I loved that in Belgrade I got to talk to several locals and it was very interesting hearing their perspective of their country.
