still not gonna be answering asks about this, but i figured i’d cross-post this thread i made just so i have a final statement on both platforms i use. this is my final “i’m not talking about this anymore”, and anyone is free to use this thread in any of the videos they’re making lol

Someone that goes by the name “@nonbinaryfinnmertens” decided to insult artist Jeff Scott Campbell and his art by saying one of this art pieces (Mary Jane from Spiderman) wasn’t drawn well.

NonBinaryFinnmertens (NBF for short) therefore decided to “fix” the original art by photoshopping it.  The end result was a ‘safe’, less dynamic picture (i.e. less fun and less ‘sexy’).

The original artist (Campbell) decided to have a little fun with this incident, taking NBF’s poor attempt and making it better (you can see it on Instagram).  Not only that, he invited all of his fans to redraw one of his other pictures (the character Black Cat) in their own style.  Hundreds (thousands maybe) of fans joined the challenge.

Above is my attempt at re-drawing Campbell’s “Black Cat” in my own style (I like skull and skeleton imagery).  The bottom-most photo is the original by Campbell.

Ever the good sport, Campbell responded to many posts and added them to his Instagram stories.

I liked Nonbinaryfinnmerten’s work. I think the response back was childish and felt highschool. I think that there were better ways to handle this if he was truly that hurt or offended. He did not choose the high road, strong dislike for people like this.

However, this is a great example of how there’s drama/discourse in every community and fandom. Don’t think there’s only drama within one, it’s fuckin everywhere. Even between a small tumblr artist and a well established adult artist.

J Scott Campbell ironically gave a bigger platform to a small time artist and showed that artists get mad if you’re offended their work isn’t natural or sexy enough. He corrected NBFM’s work by adding bigger boobs 😂 Weird correction, guess he’s that dedicated to the single woman body type he draws. It was even one of his critiques! How dare woman have small boobs and you can’t see the shape and size in her skin tight top!

I can’t help but noticed that in the “Fix” of the fix he plumped up her boobs. what did this accomplish? It was not acknowledged at all, it wasn’t even circled and given a half-assed excuse as to why they should change.

I can also see he was trying to make the other artist seem sexist while making himself seem not sexist (its VERY obvious he is) you can see this specifically in the way he compares the redesign’s pose to a dog (Weird comparison dude people sit like that irl) 

He also tries to take down another passionate creator by calling their art “art” and calling attention to the fact that they said “It wasn’t perfect”, this is all reminiscent of a toddler screaming “LOOK AT ME!” 

My point here being that creators should lift each other up not discourage each other through passive aggressive quotation marks, I think nonbinaryfinnmertens did a splendid job and i wish them the best in life and i think the rude whats-his-name is okay but he should work on his poses.
