I came up with this set up:

I think that if you do this with a high quality image, instead of the crunch one I have, you might get better results!

This looked so much like a normal map, I just had to try it...

This is a plane in a 3D modeling program, with this image applied as normals (basically, a lighting guide, so you can fake 3D details on 2D surfaces to save yourself some computing). This is what it looks like with a light passing over it.

Here are some examples of normal maps--the left is in global space, the right is in tangent space.

Tangent space is typically used, because it deforms with the mesh. So, I tried making the image bluer, and got this result:

Also it brings me zero pleasure to be Cassandra here, but “mass deportation” is a synonym for murder. I need you all to understand this. Even in the absolute best case scenario, it means large numbers of people being warehoused in slapdash facilities where illness spreads quickly and medical care is inadequate. i've been listening to the horror and the wild by the amazing devil on repeat and i think it's extremely havoc duo coded. if anyone disagrees with me, you're wrong. here's some more little sketches i did for some other lyrics, because i used to make animatics for fun and i still miss doing them.

A cast of characters I put together for fun over the course of like a week. The setting is supposed to be some kind of generic medieval fantasy. I tried to be as historical as I could with the clothes and armor, but didn't hold myself to a strict time period or location and instead went with a vague "European middle ages".

While I personally am fond of the whole grimdark fantasy thing, I love how colorful the real middle ages could be and I wanted to be sure I was sticking to that as closely as I could manage.
