What if I'm Not a Cat? by Kari-Lynn Winters
Tumblr media
Preorder
Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: June 6, 2023
Synopsis:
A sweet, playful story about identity - and what it means to belong. Why, of course Donkey’s a cat. He spends all his time with the other cats on the farm. He licks his fur and pounces, just like they do. He even cuddles with them at nap time. Though, he must admit, sometimes he does feel … a little off. So, when Farmer says to him, “Donkey, you’re acting like a cat!” it gets him thinking. What if he’s not a cat? And if not, then what is he? Will going off on his own help Donkey figure out what he is and where he belongs? Award-winning author Kari-Lynn Winters’s delightful story of self-discovery uses kid-perfect hilarity to deliver the message that every individual has something unique to offer to their community. The contrast between Donkey and his cat friends makes for laugh-out-loud silliness in Kelly Collier’s endearing and amusing art (ever seen a Donkey perch on a fence post?). Pages are filled with spot illustrations, speech bubbles and action words that keep the visual appeal high. Sure to be a story-time crowd-pleaser, this picture book could easily spark discussions about identity, fitting in and belonging. It also works well for character education lessons on adaptability, inclusiveness, initiative and caring.
My Rating: ★★★★★
My Review:
This is a sweet and very funny story about a donkey who thinks he's a cat and what happens when he has a bit of an existential crisis. The commentary by the cats is hilarious, as are the illustrations. The expressions on the various animals' faces are especially funny. Kiddo (8) and I laughed a lot as we read this. I would definitely recommend it to kids age toddler to elementary school. It would be a great pick for a read-aloud storytime at a classroom or library. *Thanks to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for providing an early copy for review.

The Van Buren Sisters vs. the Pants Police by J.F. Fox

Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: May 2, 2023
Synopsis:
A true story about two sisters, four wheels and hordes of angry fashion police! Addie and Gussie Van Buren were raised by their father to be confident, competitive and not much concerned with stuffy opinions about what women can and can’t do. So, when World War I broke out in Europe, the sisters believed women should be able to join the fight. To prove that women would make excellent battlefield messengers, they decided to drive their motorbikes across the country, dressed sensibly in leather coats and pants. Only, this was 1916, and women didn’t ride motorbikes. And women certainly did not wear pants! Despite being stopped repeatedly for wearing “men’s” clothing, the Van Buren sisters showed that “woman can, if she will”! Part of the Head-to-Head History series, this irreverently told, inspiring story by J. F. Fox showcases one of the many battles in the history of the women’s movement. This thrilling story continues to delight people today, including the descendants of the Van Buren sisters who commemorate their accomplishments by re-creating the iconic ride with dozens of other women bikers. This highly readable book adds historical context with notes at the back of the book, and a glossary and bibliography expand the content and help promote inquiry-based learning. Historical details are incorporated into Anna Kwan’s illustrations, which use comic-style speech bubbles and plenty of humor to keep the tone fun and lively.
My Rating: ★★★★★
My Review:
This was a fun and funny book about the Van Buren sisters, who had their own ideas of what was 'ladylike' and refused to bend to society's wishes. The story is told in a breezy and amusing way, and the illustrations are very expressive and emphasize the amusing parts. At the same time, it emphasizes how ridiculous the old ideas are and how capable women are, no matter what people say. Kiddo (8) enjoyed it immensely - especially the pants police part. The information at the back elaborates on how women were supposed to behave and how the Van Buren sisters broke those rules. I had no idea pants weren't widely accepted as women's wear until the 1960s - that's just bizarre. This is a fun book for kids to read to supplement lessons about how women and men have not always been treated equally. *Thanks to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for providing an early copy for review.

Why Are We Afraid? by Fran Pintadera
Tumblr media
Preorder
Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: June 6, 2023
Synopsis:
From the creators of the highly acclaimed Why Do We Cry? comes this poignant, evocative exploration of the many reasons we feel fear. After a clap of thunder, the lights in Max’s house go out. Max’s father lights a candle, and Max asks, “Dad, have you ever been afraid?” His father says everyone is afraid sometimes. Then he slowly and carefully begins to describe the contours of fear. He explains how even small fears can seem to flood everything around us. He enumerates the many different things that can make us afraid: shadows, feeling lonely, losing what we love, not being able to control the future and fading away. And he reassures his young son that while our fears can stop us in our tracks, we must keep going. Award-winning author Fran Pintadera’s poetic text together with Ana Sender’s stunning imagery make for an entrancing picture book about emotions. It makes clear that fear is a normal part of life and that when we can identify our fears, it’s easier to accept them and to move past them. A wonderful conversation starter, this book could be used to help young children understand and process their fears and, more generally, why we feel our feelings. It makes an excellent choice for lessons on social-emotional learning. Back matter includes informational content about the different types of fear, the purpose and usefulness of fear, and an activity to further explore some of the story’s key concepts.
My Rating: ★★★★★
My Review:
Kiddo (8) and I really enjoyed this. He was able to connect some of his own fears to the story and the discussion questions found at the end. The story was very sweet - a young boy asks his father if he's ever been afraid, and his father says yes, and then tells him about all the different types of fear. The illustrations were my favorite part - they are gorgeous. The style is a little bit surreal, not bothering with proper proportions or accurate depictions, which gives the whole thing a dreamlike quality. They are painted - I think with goache - but kiddo remarked that they looked like a collage, which they do. The colors are the best part. They are rich and bold and darker than one usually gets in kids books, emphasizing the many different fears depicted. I also really liked the discussion points at the end, which elaborates on why we feel fear and the different types of fear and their uses. I think this book could be very helpful to kids with big fears so they can see that they aren't alone and see how their fears can be categorized into one of the types that many people have. Thanks to NetGalley and Kids Can Press for providing an early copy for review.

Let's Build a Dam! by Daniel Fehr
Tumblr media
Preorder
Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: May 23, 2023
Synopsis:
Hilarity ensues when siblings set out to build a simple dam in this charming picture book for young children. Siblings May, Lily, and Noah build a dam. Stone by stone, their dam grows higher and higher, until their creation attracts the attention of fishermen, pirates, and even the King and his fleet. The sky's the limit, until Noah wants his stone back . . .  Each page builds upon the previous scene as the children’s imaginations also grow. Children will delight in pointing out the changing details on each page as they laugh along to this picture book about the boundlessness of imagination and sibling friendship.
My Rating: ★★★★★
My Review:
This is super cute. It's whimsical and fun and imaginative, and encourages the reader to use their imagination and play outside. Have you ever spent a summer day building a dam with your siblings? I have. Yeah, it was across a tiny stream but it didn't feel like that while we were building it. It felt so much bigger - like in this story. We created a pool to splash about in and hunt crawdads in. It was amazing. No, pirates and fishermen and kings and villages did not magically appear, but that's where imagination comes in. The story is simple, yes, but it does a fantastic job evoking that "summer dam building" feeling. It doesn't *need* a complicated plot or a moral lesson. Just some kids and rocks and a stream and their imagination, and a mom to wrap them in blankets and give them hot cocoa after. The art is gorgeous and humorous and adds a lot to the story. The colors used and the techniques and textures used in creating the landscape give it a 'summer day in the imagination' feeling that fits perfectly with the text. I look forward to sharing this with my kiddo (8). He's a little old for it, maybe, but I think he'll really enjoy it. I would definitely recommend it for younger kids. It's a book to take time with and investigate the changing details of the images as the story progresses. *Thanks to NetGalley and NorthSouth Books for providing an early copy for review.

I'm being stalked by someone who screams that I can't stop talking about her despite her having it made it clear she wants "no contact" and then screenshots my blog to spread more lies about me in spite of the fact that I have her blocked and block evading is supposed to be one of my grievous sins
like literally the most I have talked about her recently was with a coded name that doesn't even reference her URL in response to her taking a screenshot of my post and calling me pro-American because memes are hilarious but IRL seriously I would have preferred 9/11 not have happened
I am still not using her URL or her fucking name while she goes around saying VELVET VEXATIONS SHOULD DRINK BLEACH BECAUSE SHE SAID DONALD TRUMP DOESN'T BELIEVE TRANS WOMEN ARE WOMEN NOW EXCUSE ME I SAW MY LEAST FAVORITE COLOR AND NEED TO COMPOSE A MELINCHOLY POEM TO PROCESS THE GRIEF IT'S CAUSED ME
every time a transradfem equates discussing how transphobes feel about us is the same as misgendering other trans people, that's fucking pathetic assuming it's a genuine belief and not just something to performatively break into tears over as intoxicatingly self-righteous justification for thinking only the people they fetishize should be allowed to exist
but apparently! this person has another stalker who sends her posts to other people! and that's really interesting to me, you know, because the only post of her's I've ever received from an anon was one in which she was talking about me! And when that person came off anon to say it was them that sent it, she took a screenshot of that admission but did not include me telling them off for stirring shit
too bad I decided to delete the admission due them using her name and can't prove I gave them that dressing down, clearly I shouldn't have fucking bothered since innocence itself is no protection
she seriously can't stop calling me a TERF while actual no-bullshit TERFs are openly calling on one another to email publishers trying to get me canceled for writing a fanfic where it's briefly mentioned a trans teenager wore her sister's clothes without asking, what the fuck does any transradfem know about TERFs when I'm dealing with actual TERFs and all they are to them is an abstract concept used to bludgeon trans men and non-binary people with
these fucking people do not experience actual fucking problems, they do not have any conception of what an actual problem is, they sit around lying about the traitorous Queen of Tee Em Eees, puppet of the completely fictional AFAB patriarchy, because they do not have real problems and have never had one in their entire lives, like all fucking people who can't go five seconds without reminding you they're a communist because they think it's cool and trendy and makes them sound smart to say things like dialetic materialist epistemology transubstantiating within the imperial core of the glocal northsouth without actually engaging in any of the actual ideals that make communism laudable and worthy of sincere pursuit
the temptation is to say that transradfems do it because they feel powerless to do anything about actual social issues on any level and lash out at anyone they can feel good taking a swing at, but I don't give a fuck, I'm not willing to give them that they're just misguided, I don't think there's a single atom in the being of even one transradfem that cares about about anything beyond the clout they can extract from it, at best everything they whine about is less than a fourteen year old on Livejournal writing about how unfair it is when their parents won't let them get a tattoo except usually the the fourteen year old would be relaying actual events that actually happened
and I straight up do not fucking believe anyone gets hate mail over interactions I've had with them either, I fucking do not believe those obviously bullshit lies while I still get anons calling me zipperits and trying to trigger dysphoria on the assumption that works on me for saying I think transmascs aren't cis men
in fact, I kinna half-joked about it before, but I think I now just fully believe it one hundred percent was a fucking trans rad fem - probably even this one in particular! - who sent my published work to that TERF the other day, because I haven't had that pinned or brought it up in months and I've never gotten attention from TERFs before this month outside of one or two comments that went nowhere
motherfucking hellsite
fucking internet
fucking stupid motherfuckers

Book Blurb: From the world of Jitterbug, a picture bookfor any child who is afraid to step into the limelight and try something new!
Walter is a shy moth. He prefers to hide out in his quiet attic. But a fiery passion slumbers in him . . . In his heart he is a drummer, a true “Goth Moth.” There’s just one problem: Walter has no drums, let alone a band. The moth adores the music by Jitterbug (also known as Lady B. Marie)—his idol. At one of her concerts, the unimaginable happens: the Goth Moth now finds himself on stage, in the limelight.
Kai Lüftner’s rollicking rhymes tell the story of someone who flies under the radar with daring rhythm. Wiebke Rauers prepares the stage for our shy hero in such a thrilling way that you too will become a Goth Moth fan.
Rock on with Walter the Goth Moth and Lady B. Marie the Jitterbug in these musical refrains about being yourself!
Review: A darling and very sweet children's book about being afraid to step into the limelight and try something new. The story follows Walter, a shy goth moth who usually hides away and dreams about being a drummer. Can he find the courage to seize his dreams and play with his idol, Jitterbug? This was so cute and sweet. The artwork is cute and I had fun reading this.

Wish You Were Here: Postcards from Franz Kafka by Bernadette Watts US pub date - 9/10/24
An absolutely lovely story that I’ve loved for a few years now after seeing a social media post featuring the story. Bernadette Watts’s new book, Wish You Were Here tells the tale with gorgeous, vividly colored illustrations that are a joy to look at.
The book is charming and heartwarming, its illustrations utterly beautiful, and it’s a wonderful story to share (and one I fully recommend) with new and older readers alike.  This deserves a spot on bookshelves - my own children are nearly grown but I’ll be getting a copy of this for our bookshelf anyhow.
Recommended.

little agression, it always set my heart of fire (celric)

little agression, it always set my heart of fire (celric)
DRAGON*
A very long, long time ago in China, the men, women and children fished, hunted, planted and lived
together in tribes. Some lived near the oceans and rivers, some in the tall mountains, and some in
valleys and plains. Each tribe was protected by a kind and caring spirit.
These spirits looked like the animals the tribes knew best. Those that lived near the oceans or rivers
were protected by a fish or a frog spirit. Tribes in the mountains were protected by the tiger or eagle
spirit, those living in the plains by the camel, horse, deer or the swift serpent, and those who lived near
the rice fields were protected by the helpful ox spirit.
So this is how it was a long, long time ago in China: the people of the tribes working and living under the
protection of their special animal spirit.
But all was not well. Sadly, the tribes were jealous of each other. Often one tribe would wage war
against another tribe in the name of their spirit. There was much fighting.
One day all the children in China grew tired of all the fighting and they decided to declare a war on war.
After much thought, they knew what they needed to do. They would make a new animal spirit, one that
would be more powerful than all the other animal spirits and would be able to protect ALL the people of
China.
So they did just that. They created a new animal. They used the neck and body of the swift moving
serpent, but covered it with the scales of a fish and gave it the belly of a frog. For feet they used
powerful tiger paws with the strong, clutching claws of an eagle. For a head they started with one that
resembled the camel or horse of the plains, but added the horns of a deer and the ears of the ox. And
because it needed to be able to protect ALL the people, they made it able to fly in the sky, swim in the
sea and walk on land. They called their new animal DRAGON!
When the men and women of all the tribes in China saw the animal their children had created, they
thought it so beautiful, so magnificent, that they vowed to stop their fighting and they made peace with
one another.
Of course, they were not always successful, and over the years there were wars, but the children’s
powerful dragon remains a beloved symbol of peace in China today.
*A retelling of “Legend of the Chinese Dragon” by Marie Sellier, Catherine Louis and Wang Fei,
NorthSouth Books, New York, 2006.
They're both stories close and you're a really close and they changed a few of the words in the tone. They were wearing like they are now they had fighting and fighting and they needed to have a better weapon to stop them it's a conquer and wanted to make one to use and they went ahead and informed the dragon. It's an analogy to our son's brother where they're having to make weaponry and his name was Vlad the impaler which is also the dragon and Arthur Pendragon and it's him that they were blaming and are blaming for making the dragon. It's very much celebrated in our culture and it is a huge huge deal meaning it's a very big deal in Asia and our son is nicknamed The lizard King by a lot of people mostly Jim Morrison who thinks that he did it and he's the father of Justin Gill and his wife is also attributed is making the dragon so much so that they named the name to try and get her to talk calling it Godzilla and she didn't say anything and he had to figure it out and said look at the fat ass on that thing. And he speaks like an American okay it is kind of rude but that's what happened the Philippines peloponnesia Vietnam Cambodia all of the islands and little blue time and a few other areas they know about this story in about Dave AKA Jesus Christ and they know that he is the one they believed in it since they've been around for a long time so they know that our son is his brother and is different in a few ways and is a different group although from the same family so this year is the year of the dragon and the two ships or boats which are really part of a catamaran being brought out and revived right now he has people looking for it and she does too and her son says boy let's hope she doesn't ruin yours that's how it is back in the day and he's not smiling and says it I have to get out of here other people too will try and ruin it even though it's the property of JC and Mary they don't want it back and they don't want this idiot back so it's something for him to do rebuild the boat and people are making fun of him for years cuz he didn't know about it that would be the max making fun of him as Mark Harmon and he took out an old tool since I know how to use this it says it's getting worse and the girl came down and saw it and said what the hell is that for and that's actually Sarah now and he said I don't know what does it look like and she started getting mad at him and today she's laughing okay so you're this moron who doesn't know anything his kids trying to figure it out because he's in a trap and you're not figuring it out and he says it's all words and stuff so someone destroys it to get to destroy you and they're moving on the boats. This is a wonderful period of time where history is coming back and it is powerful and you'll see how powerful this guy is trying to court off the whole area and he's going to try and use it but he needs the boat out

Solar Tech Systems | aussiesolartech.com.au
Solar tech systems harness and convert solar radiation into various forms of energy. They include photovoltaic (PV) technologies that directly convert sunlight into electricity; concentrating solar-thermal (CSP) technologies that generate power by using mirrors to concentrate sun’s heat; and electrical grid systems that integrate PV and CSP technology with traditional and other renewable sources.
Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems

Solar tech systems photovoltaic (PV) convert the Sun’s radiation into electricity. They can be used for homes or large electric utility and energy generation purposes. Individual solar cells produce only a small amount of power, so they are combined into modules and arrays to generate larger amounts. NREL researchers are working to improve the performance of PV cells so that they can meet the growing demand for clean, renewable energy.
NREL also conducts research to ensure that PV systems are properly sized to match their owners’ electricity usage. This includes determining how much electricity is needed and deciding what time of day the system should be operating so that it can take advantage of peak sunlight hours. Currently, most off-grid PV systems include batteries to allow them to continue producing electricity during cloudy conditions.
Concentrating solar-thermal (CSP) systems
CSP technologies capture the sun’s heat to drive a conventional steam turbine generator. They are often paired with thermal energy storage systems to provide flexible and dispatchable electricity.
Solar energy is focused by mirrors onto a receiver or engine that converts the thermal energy into electricity using a Rankine or Brayton cycle. There are two major types of utility-scale CSP: power tower and linear concentrator.
Power tower systems use a network of sun-tracking mirrors that focus sunlight on the top of a central tower where a heat transfer fluid is heated to over 600oC. The steam drives a conventional turbine-generator to produce electricity.
Linear concentrator systems use parabolic trough collectors to concentrate sunlight into parallel tubes filled with a heat transfer fluid. These systems can either operate without storage, or with a thermal energy storage system like molten salt.
Sun-tracking systems
Solar tracking systems are designed to orient solar panels toward the sun as it rises and sets. This can lead to a significant boost in power production, which is why it’s worth the additional expense of installing these systems on your rooftop.
There are several types of solar trackers, with a single-axis solar system offering the most cost-effective solution. These trackers move on one axis and are aligned northsouth and east-west. These are also known as vertical single-axis trackers or VSATs.
Dual-axis trackers are more expensive and require additional maintenance.
However, they can improve your solar energy output by up to 40%. These are often used in commercial applications. They have a more complex control system and are based on a computer-based algorithm. They can be more prone to failure than static solar panels.
Perovskite solar cells
Perovskite solar cells (PSC) have high efficiencies and are currently being extensively researched. However, they are not yet ready for commercialisation. This is because they have stability issues and need to be improved, optimised and scaled for large areas of device.
The stability of these solar cells can be improved by adding tin to the mix. Tin is in the same column as lead on the periodic table and has a similar ionic size, so it can replace lead without negatively impacting the performance of the cell.
The NREL’s research in this area includes examining how the structure of a perovskite cell can be altered to improve stability. Another focus is improving the fabrication process for these devices. This includes reducing the number of heating and coating steps, and using roll-to-roll processing.
Cadmium telluride solar cells
Cadmium telluride solar tech cells use a thin semiconductor layer to absorb and convert sunlight into electricity. They are more efficient than crystalline silicon panels and can operate in higher temperatures. They can also withstand more moisture.
The Ohio-based companies First Solar and Toledo Solar make cadmium telluride solar panels. Their products compete with crystalline silicon systems, which represent the majority of the world’s solar panels.
The cadmium telluride industry is less vulnerable to supply chain interruptions than the crystalline silicon sector, Mansfield said. The materials needed per panel are relatively small, and better ways to refine them could maximize their availability. The industry is also less dependent on foreign supplies, and can use byproducts from mining ores. It is less carbon-intensive than crystalline solar technology, and can recycle end-of-life modules.

Book Blurb: Warts, evil spells, and toads for pets? The modern-day witches in this book aren’t scary or frightening, but rather hip! Meet these diverse witches from around the world and their animal companions in this quirky picture book from debut author-illustrator April Suddendorf!
Every witch needs a pet by her side. But if you’re picturing black cats or toads, think again. Because in Wacky Witches and Their Peculiar Familiars the animal companions are just as original and likable as their witches: a little monkey helps his pink-haired witch cut her locks, while a parrot helps his tarot card-reading witch answer the phone.
In her picture book debut, German author–illustrator April Suddendorf plays with a cliché: witches are not evil, old, or scary, but modern, versatile women from all over the world. Joyful magic unfolds through clever rhymes as each witch, and her animal friend, is introduced. Readers, discover what kind of witch you want to be!
Which witch will be your favorite? For readers who love Room on the Broom and Witch & Wombat!
Review:
The cutest little witchy book. This book is absolutely adorable!! It features so many different types of witches of with their familiars and the diversity is perfection. I love the artwork featured in this book so much and I would absolutely recommend this book for young readers!
