Playing Both Sides by Tamarai
Title: Playing Both Sides
Author: Tamarai and on Tumblr @tamsolo
Summary: Rogue is good at infiltrating enemy bases as a double agent, but maybe this time, she's a little too good. Romy
Rate: M
Fanfiction ID:  7336198
Universe: Wolverine & the X-Men
Characters: Gambit/Remy Lebeau, Rogue/Anna Marie, Jean-Paul Beaubier/Northstar, Fenris Twins.
Genre: Romance and Adventure.
Status: Complete
Published: Between Aug 29, 2011 and Feb 14, 2012
Word Count: 111,001 in 34 chapters
Content/Author Notes: Disclaimer: I do not own the X-men, nor am I affiliated with Marvel in any way.
Author's notes: I just can't seem to resist the call of the new X-men cartoon even though it was cancelled after only one season, so here's another fic in this verse! I like that Rogue and Gambit never met on the show, it keeps so many possibilities open. For those unfamiliar with the 'toon, I've taken the liberty of keeping things easy to follow and slightly AU.
A few notes: The MRD stands for the Mutant Registration Department—a government run program for capturing and detaining mutants, claiming it's necessary to register and imprison mutants for public safety—although they seem to have mutants that work for them. They are the show's main antagonist. S.H.I.E.L.D. is like a secret ops program that enlists all types of people or mutants with special abilities, running its own secretive agenda, mainly for the good of everyone regardless of the ruthless methods used at times. Sometimes they are protagonists, sometimes they are not. I did not want to bring the mojoverse into this fic, but to keep canon with the series, it is briefly addressed.
As always, I use minimal accents, I truly believe your imaginations are far better than all my misspelled words and apostrophes.
I recommend this because first there are only 42 Romy fics (on Fanfiction.net) pairing Rogue and Gambit in the Wolverine & the X-Men universe, most of them are one shots so If someone asked me I definitively  would list this fic in the Must read ones in said Universe.
This fic gets me thrilled with all the action and all the adventures they have, you get the opportunity to read some characters on the X-Men Universe a little bit forgotten.

"There’s something refreshing about spending time in the company of children, don’t you think?” A morning spent in the company of orphans, giving into curiosity about how Laewyth treated some of its most vulnerable. Knowledge, Ingrid had always believed, was not a thing you could have too much of. All knowledge was good knowledge. Especially when it concerned others. “I think that sometimes there’s so much we can learn from them.”

ϟ ☾ “Come, drink with me. This is a momentous occasion,” Eirik raised his goblet to the other, merrily. “I never thought I’d see a time that my people would join forces with the South. The gods demand that we mark this day.”

Laewyth, evening.
“Do you know ---,” Gyda hushed conspiratorially, “Where I can get a love potion?”

«✧ “I’m sweltering,” the guard complained with a heavy sigh.  “Who decided it was a good idea to stoke the fire? Savages will melt in their furs. Or is this ridiculous heat all a ruse to cease the pillaging in this fair city?”

Saanvi greatly admired the event--Laewyth was lit up with light, laughter, and games aplenty. What a lovely, welcoming idea. She would have done the same, she would hope, if it had been the southerners in Svalr.
She was particularly interested in their small productions--acts of drama, humor and intrigue. It made her heart ache. How similar this was to Diwali in her mother country. Watching with bright eyes, she leaned to the person at her side, “In India, we had men that breathed fire.”

“If you had any sense, you’d leave now,” Derrik paced the floor, looking out into the murky, grey clouds that clotted the skies. War was so imminent on the horizon, that the weather was shifting to accommodate it's mood, “Things are about to get... unsavory.”

the crowds were impressive. if bjor had thought the town center of laewyth was busy before the festival, now it was downright teeming with hot, sweaty, drunk bodies. it reminded bjor of home, actually; if, of course, the people walking didn’t look to him with such contempt.
the jarl sat at the fire pit ( one of many that had been set up throughout the kingdom, serving as local meeting spots for festival goers to eat and drink outdoors ), watching the happenings around him intently, eager to learn more of the people who were celebrating. “ what could they be celebrating, without a reason or sacrifice to make it real ?” he was speaking mostly to himself, but anyone could have heard.

it was early, early enough that ingrid still felt dreamy. washed, dressed, and fed, by all semblances awake, but there was still a large part of her left unhardened by duties of the day. early, yes it was early. past sunrise, but not yet the hour of waking for all. there was something nice in being outside at such an early hour, soothing. her eyes were fixed overheard on birds flying, watching them as they soared so gracefully. what was it like to be so free? she sighed. “do you ever think what it would be like to fly?”

“I yield,” Eirik said, tossing his sword to one side. He had not been losing against the solider he sparred with, by any means, but he just couldn’t be bothered. The arrival of the Magnicourt envoys had cast a dark cloud on his usually jovial moods, and he could think of little else. Not even his favourite hobby could distract him. Turning away from his opponent, he caught the other’s eyes on him. “Feel free to pick up my sword if you wish. We should all have blades in our hands given the circumstances.”

“And graven with diamonds in letters plain There is written, her fair neck round about: Noli me tangere, for Caesar’s I am, And wild for to hold, though I seem tame.“ Rani read aloud from the book clasped in slender fingers. A sigh left her lips as she closed the pages, her gaze lifting to her companion. “Is it not beautiful? I don’t think there is anything that captures the heart more so than poetry.”

Christoff was well known in his own kingdom as a brave knight of the realm, strong and fearsome on the battlefield, and a serial philanderer when attending court. It was a reputation that had been cultivated since he had taken a role in service of the Rosenburg family, aged only 18. Not many realised the range of his talents. His education had been thorough, and his penmanship was excellent, as evidenced by the painstakingly written page in front of him. What would surprise those that knew him even more was the drawings tucked away under the page, talented reproductions of some of Laewyth’s curiosities to send to his children. Bastards as they were, he held a large degree of affection for them, and though neither were yet old enough to read, it helped him miss them a little less if he regularly wrote to them, and sent them trinkets and drawings of his own. So engrossed was he in printing words on the page, he did not noticed the presence of another in the room.

He sat at the edge of the fountain, set on making the most of the day’s sunlight. A journal at his lap had his full attention, and he scrawled in it furiously whilst he waited for his princess. Now more than ever his thoughts threatened to tear him apart, and he found the only release the act of ink to paper.
Westerners. In the South. If the thought of Northerners hadn’t worried him , this certainly did. Simple civilians and diplomats, they both intrigued him and dredged up discomfort he dared not fully revel in. His first thought upon hearing news of their arrival was to find Ingrid and hear her perspective on the matter. She helped him make sense of his own mind, and the idea that maybe he could still do such a thing for her had him request their meeting. Despite being on unfamiliar territory with his oldest and best friend, his first instinct in troubling times was still to go to her. To see if she was okay.
A shadow fell upon him and he looked up to see the woman in question. A smile broke across his face and he stood. “Ingrid.”

With his siblings growing hungrier, Meri was growing more desperate to find work. He’d been able to clean a few people’s stables and polish a few pieces armor, but none of the coin he’d received has done him much good for long. Stopping in the middle of the busiest street he’d found in Laewyth, he stopped a stranger with a hand on their shoulder. “ Please, do you know where I could find work ? ”
