We are excited to announce that the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee has approved the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act. The legislation which was reintroduced by Sens.Cory Booker and Shelley Moore Capito was passed by the committee with a 24 to 4 vote and will be included in the Endless Frontier Act S. 1260. This is great news for sharks and the oceans as the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act makes it illegal to buy, sell, possess or move shark fins or any product containing shark fins, except for certain Dogfish fins. Although shark finning is illegal in the U.S. the country does not have a total ban on the shark fin trade and is a major shipping hub for illegal fins. We want to personally thank Sens. @corybooker @capitoforwv @maria.cantwell_ and @senlisamurkowski i, and House reps. @kilili_sablan @congressman_mccaul . And a huge shout out to the shark advocates and shark community. Without all of your support changes like these wouldn’t be made possible. Although this success brings the U.S. one step closer to being fin free, the fight isn’t over yet. WildAid & Plan B: Anti Shark Fin

Shark Awareness Day

In recognition of the recent of Shark Awareness Day, international conservation organization WildAid and Plan B Media PCL, launched a campaign urging restaurants to stop serving and people to stop consuming shark fin.

The advertisements via BBDO Bangkok, placed on Plan B’s media platforms in prominent locations around Bangkok, features wedding couples dressed in controversial outfits suggesting that their fashion statement was not the “worst choice” they made but rather their decision to include shark fin on the menu.

The campaign builds on WildAid’s “Celebrate with #NoSharkFin” initiative calling on the public to forgo shark fin at weddings and celebratory events. According to WildAid’s survey findings, more than half of urban Thais have eaten shark fin and, even more alarmingly, 61% plan to consume it again in the future. Survey respondents said they consumed shark fin most often at weddings (72%), family meals at restaurants (61%) and business meetings (47%)

The bust happened on May 29th after custom officers inspected two air shipments arriving from Mexico and found millions of dollars worth in shark fins. These illegal commodities are valued at approximately $2.2 million dollars. Hong Kong officials actively do their part to try and stop the illicit trade of shark fins. Sharks in CRISIS

Sharks and rays are in serious trouble, numbers locally and globally are falling dramatically. Local populations are extinct, Fisheries regulations are either non existent, insufficient or failing.  Many organisations are trying to reverse the trends either nationally or globally.  Shark populations are crashing... The sharks have been around since before the dinosaurs, they have been swimming the world’s oceans for more than 400 million years. They watched the dinosaurs come and go, they survived the mass extinction that killed the dinosaurs, but in 50 years we have reduced sharks to critically low numbers. They simply cannot survive over-exploitation by humans. 

These top predators are in grave trouble due to heavy fishing pressure. Shark finning for the Asian Shark Fin Soup trade has increased dramatically as China and other SE Asian Nations have become wealthier. 

Numbers of reef sharks in Borneo have fallen by over 90%. The Shark Trust estimates 80 per cent of Atlantic sharks have been lost in the past 15 years. Britain is one of only five EU member states that still allows the removal of shark fins at sea. The meat of many sharks has little value so the fins are kept and the shark body dumped back into the sea. 

TRACC is working within Malaysia with a number of partners to protect and restore shark populations. Using advocacy, policy changes, science and awareness campaigns. TRACC is trying to create shark protected areas and effective bycatch regulations. The time for change is now, the loss of sharks will create devastating and unpredictable changes to ocean ecosystems.
