Well... Banner thoughts

1. Black Knight/Zelgius is absolutely perfect. I laughed at his “accosted by children” line and also just love that he’s CHRISTMAS-themed.

2. Dorothea...

Ok look... I very very very VERY rarely use this word because it’s either misused as all hell, or people are making an exaggeration over it.

But... I genuinely think IS is being sexist with Dorothea. In a way that’s so hurtfully ironic to her character. I hate using the word “sexist” because she’s NOT REAL, I get that, but like I honestly don’t know how else to go about it. Dorothea hasn’t even been included as a base alt in this game; She’s so far had the most alts out of any character without actually being in the game. And that’s not a BAD thing. But... Look at all her alts: Summer swimsuit alt, Plegian alt with skimpy clothing, and now her Christmas alt with a SUPER low-cut top and fishnet stockings. Like wasn’t the whole point of Dorothea’s character that she was seen as a low-class nobody who only gained value for her voice and her body? And all IS keeps doing is giving her more sexy alts BEFORE EVEN GIVING HER A BASE UNIT IN THE GAME?

And ok, let me absolutely clarify: These are just lines at the end of the day. It’s just a drawing. In the long run, I don’t give a shit and it doesn’t affect me. But in the short run... Fuck, I wish they’d be a little more balanced and less blatant with who their fan-service is for. Oh, also STOP MAKING THE THREE HOUSES UNITS MANDATORY ADDITIONS TO THE CHRISTMAS BANNER.

3. Annette. Sweetie, darling, love of my life, honey, I love you. I really do. You are precious to me.

... But you are also a Three Houses character and the fact that both you AND Dorothea are on this banner means that you’re killing the banner diversity.

4. Cordelia and Selena.

HRGHHHHHH.... Really mixed on this one.

On the one hand, it’s... really weird that they’re going “Haha look, it’s a Harmonic Hero” when no. It’s not. Shuddup. Also hell, could they not have made Selena the main unit? This is her “first” alt in the game (but really no it isn’t, the Easter alt is), and they decided to make Cordelia ANOTHER alt primarily. Also right on the heels of her Fates alt being added? Really? So now we have Regular Cordelia, Bridal Cordelia, Summer Cordelia, Resplendent Cordelia, Caeldori, and finally this Christmas one. Yaaaay.

But on the other hand, it’s sweet that Cordelia and Severa are finally in a Duo Heroes together. So I’ll let it slide.

5. Bruno.

Augh... I haven’t seen the art yet but Bruno is slowly stepping into Dorothea’s territory, just in the male version of it. IS, please just give us Bruno as a Legendary Hero for the next banner. Please don’t make him like Dorothea where all we’re getting is man-tiddy. Like... Do as much fan-service as you want AFTER their base unit gets added, but consider adding him first. Also maybe do the cool thing you did with Conrad where his mask is off when you check his profile.

Actually, I kind of hope he has his mask off for this banner.

All in all, I honestly hate to say it but this Christmas banner is a pass for me. I might try to free Summon for Black Knight but that’s it.

5 Years Of Three Houses, 5 Years Of Loving Edelgard.

5 Years ago today, I was first able to enter the continent of Fodlan, I meet Edelgard and from there I fell for a character in a way I never had before. I was already a professional writer with published worked and focused on Character driven work but I was still blown away by what an amazing character Edelgard was. 5 years ago, I got Engaged at a queer con, I was playing my 2nd route of three houses having played from Three Houses. The game was with me at this wonderful landing point in my life, it was there during the rough covid era struggles, when I was deeply, deeply sick, I was sicker than I ever been, not with Covid but with stomach issues and was hospitalized multiple times in one month ending in a surgery. I ran a roleplay inspired by Three Houses in Thirsty Sword Lesbians which I played for many years, I dated one of my exes through the whole campaign and grew a lot closer to one of my current girlfriends through it. I refined a version of one of my favorite OCs Ever Lena to do a Three Houses OC AU version of her for a different roleplay and while that fell through she did end up being used for that previously mentioned TSL game.

I reviewed Three Houses after finishing all four routes, I wanted to be really through and experience every route, every story, every FF romance arc, etc before I reviewed it. I gave the game a 7/10, I think now I'd give it an 8/10 maybe but a review score is what I think of the game as an overall package. The life changing power of Crimson Flower was really the big deal for me. That was 10/10, that was peak, it was just that the other routes were nowhere near as good for me. Edelgard the revolutionary who is happy to cast herself as a villain if that's what it takes to change the oppression in the world, something that was so strong, so powerful that it was reflected into our world. She was so good at being a character who impacted a fictional world, the only reason things happen at all that people to this day get angry about people loving her, discourse about her, cast her off, make up shit, show their political asses, etc. What a fucking character to be hated so strongly, for so long by this rabid group. Keeping love from a small fan base over time is hard but maintaining hate as a fictional character, that's harder especially with a 24/7 culture war of new women to hate. However, she also maintained love, Edelgard is the most popular character in all of Fire Emblem, in the 5 years she's got the most fan art, the most votes in CYL, she clearly makes nearly the most money in the gacha given how often they make new versions of her or rerun her, she is the moment.

Of course, it is not just Edelgard I love but the Black Eagles as a whole from the classic roster to the extended family of Mercedes, Lyesthia, Shamir, Leonie, to the Hopes additions of Monica and Shez. Edelgard stands so tall but she doesn't overshadow her amazing allies in changing the world. Even the men, me a famous not man enjoyer, finds at worst like, kinda boring rather than like repulsive. Plus I really love Hubert and Jeritza both as characters and think they are lovely, brilliant characters I wouldn't want to see replaced.

Three Houses hit me in a way "better" games haven't hit me in. I still think about the characters, the world, the politics, the ideas, the lore, the romances, everything so often, daily. I love so much art, most of this little blog is me talking about art I engaged with and I struggle to think of another piece of art that took me by storm in the same ways that Three Houses has. I'd love to have another game sweep me off my feet and have me giggling like someone who just met their idol but even if it doesn't happen again I am glad it happened with Three Houses.

Then there was Three Hopes and I fucking love Three Hopes, it only exists in the context of Houses but Scarlet Blaze and Golden Wildfire blew me the fuck away. Both routes do a ton for the characters in the series, the plots are fantastic, bringing Monica back and making her one of the best characters in the Fire Emblem series was so fucking great, and I adore the Warriors gameplay. Three Houses was a gift that not only gave itself but Hopes which really just furthered helped put Houses in focus, tie in way more lore, way more context, and way more information. I could explore the world of Fodlan even more honestly, I still hope for Hopes DLC because I just love this game.

It was so amazing to see Edeglard freed of Those Who Slither in the dark and the way her revolution works if she could just have saved her lesbian best friend and probably girlfriend. I loved to see the new amazing paralogues, the way the war shakes out, how she operates free of enemies resting in her house, how the nobles react when Edelgard is a free agent, the way the church fights back in this new time line. It really exciting and it is fun to see how the world once again revolves around the actions and moves of Edelgard and how she sets Fodlan Ablaze with change but now with more time to do things more carefully. It is such a great alterative look.

I don't have enough glowing things to say about Three Houses but I do have some things to say for the future of my favorite video game series. I deeply hope the future of Fire Emblem is more like Houses and not like the games around it. Houses was a return to form and the first story that blew me away since Radiant Dawn. I want more games that have the style and budget and scope and ambition of a Houses. I don't really trust intelligent systems to bring me that kind of story, so I hope they work with Koei again in the future and let their writers do their thing,

I love the smaller scale Fire Emblems but I can play indie games and smaller budget SRPGs and get the scope and ambition of a smaller scale Fire Emblem but only Nintendo money can bring the kind of game Houses is to the table. I really want to see the expensive class system brought back hopefully without the sexism and the big roster of characters and so much of the little things that made houses so charming. I don't need multiple routes but I would like a good political message like Crimson Flower to be in the future. I don't know if I'll ever love a character not made by me or my loves ones as much as I love Edelgard again but I want them try and I want them to pull it off.

lets say youre byleth. youre teaching the black eagles, yay! but you have a b support with claude. you and claude are good buddies, maybe you just like claude as a character or its accidental because of x y z does Not matter. either way you are one of claudes closest friends. then the war starts, and you choose to side with a woman claude sees as a future tyrant (or at the very least a driven warmonger who might crush the alliance underneath her boot). imagine the hurt. the absolute fucking agony for claude.

and for byleth! byleth wakes up and their friend is gone. on another side, unreachable, 5 years of emotional distance *yawning* in front of them.

and then they reunite in the midst of battle, weapons drawn. theyve both come so far and have goals they *have* to achieve.

too bad. if you roll over, you get a game over because you fuckin failed the route. or you have to make someone else kill claude because sumn sumn mechanically you have a 0% hit rate bc of that b support. you cant do it.

too bad. claude cant run away, hes the last line of defense for a place hes responsible for. if he leaves what is he? a coward? a turncoat? would he have to believe in edelgard's future? would he have to slay his own allies, friends, the people who relied on him?

he mentions sometimes dreaming of the monastery. the food was good, right? hope the foods good in the future you build with edelgard. hope you name a town after him, thatd be fun. dont get stupid, teach, dont join him too soon. maybe he'll even wait for ya. keep a seat warm.

lets say youre playing black eagles. its nearish endgame but not too close so i dont say any spoilers, but regardless bernadetta and yuri have an A support. they might get hitched postgame man, you havent done the A support of anyone else w those two. its a rough battle, your healer is severely low on psychic uses, you sold all your fucking vulneraries because you thought dorothea was more of a beast than she is. its dire.

bernadetta is within 5 tiles and instead of yuri's canned death quote, bernie interjects with one of the most well voiced anguished screams youve ever fucking heard. on the next turn, bernie gets +50 hit *and* crit on that enemy, and if she kills it the rest of the scene plays.

bernie is holding yuri, one of her few friends in her hellish fucking life. hes not gonna make it, she knows that, but shes still gonna try. shes wailing and begging him to stay like she wished she had all those fucking years ago, shes babbling about all the things he'll miss if he goes, all the things shes planned for them to do now that shes brave enough to leave her bedroom. he cuts her off to laugh. now is when she gets brave and honest with her feelings? when hes dying? oh bernie come on. he wraps an arm around her shoulders and pulls her in for a hug, kissing her temple like an old boyfriend and not a quiet yearning crush. he murmurs that hes glad she left her bedroom. that hes glad she can see the world beyond what abuse happened to her behind closed doors. that she'll find some other person to hold in his stead, one who wont so rudely get his blood on her battle leathers. one who wont leave her time and time again like he has. she wails into his shoulder as she drops the scraps of cloth she had been trying to use to stop his bleeding and just holds her dying friend.

"Jack, babe, it's fine! I will help you." You were playing 'fire emblem three houses' on Jack's lap, but you couldn't help but feel a gaze burning into your skin. You had looked to the side, watching how he watched you with interest. You knew that look, he was curious, eager to try.

So you told him he could.

You were still in his lap, the Switch in his hands as yours were on top of his to guide him.

"What I always do is keep the bow user behind with the healer, before that I usually put mages, then axes and polearms and swords. I usually put cavalry on their own as they're pretty strong. Sometimes I leave them with healers, as they also have another weapon to use so that the cavalry isn't all alone."

He had no idea what you were saying and it was noticeable in the way he was playing.

Attacking a cavalry with a bow user, but he was getting there.

You couldn't tell him off, though. The way he was fully concentrating in the game with his chin resting against the top of your head.

◇ when the two of you were at your home, he would sit you on his lap as he watched you game.

◇ one of his arms wrapped around your waist to keep you in place, his other hand occupied by his phone.

◇ his phone was long forgotten though, as he watched you carry in your valorant match.

◇ you play without a headset when Jack is around so that he doesn't feel closed off or ignored.

◇ this is how he hears the toxicity of Valorant though.

◇ genuinely gets angry when you get insulted.

"Bro, why you assuming aimbot? Not my fault I can actually aim." You groaned into the mic as your fingers aggressively tapped on the WASD keys. You got into yet another toxic match and it was pissing you off.

"Make me a fucking sandwich, fucking bitch."

Now that made Jack furious. The grip on your waist got tighter as he cussed the other player out into the mic. He wouldn't let anyone get off the hook so easily, not when they degraded his girl.

"Who do you think you are, fucker? Treating women like trash? You're so fucking pathetic." His voice was hoarse as he spoke, venom laced into his words.

While I get that the first Xenoblade's affinity system can be frustrated with how slow it is to build, and how it locks heart-to-hearts until you meet the requirements, it still is honestly my favourite approach to all these things in any Xenoblade game. Because by locking specific heart-to-hearts behind specific affinity levels, you can get into progressively deeper topics for each heart-to-heart for each pairing, without having to lock them behind being in later areas or specific story progression. It's kinda like taking some of the good parts of Fire Emblem's support system, even if these conversations don't necessarily build on each other like those.

But also, the whole mechanic of having party members gift each other collectibles is super great. Not just because it gives collectibles another purpose aside from being just used for quests, but it's also super fun to see what character likes which kinds of things. Like-

Shulk's favourite colour is most likely blue, and he's more of a dog person than a cat person

There's like three different colours that could be Reyn's favourite, and it's just funny to imagine him trying to figure out what things from the strange category are, what they're for, and getting frustrated over it

Fiora's favourite colour is probably red, and she does like flowers, even though a quiet moment between Melia and Nene implies the opposite

Dunban's favourite colour is either black or white, and- Him disliking things that Fiora likes?? Peak sibling energy. But also, what the fuck, Dunban

Sharla's favourite colour is most likely yellow, which is honestly pretty interesting, cause it isn't really reflected in anything in her design or other parts of her character that are relevant to the main story. And her dislike of bugs is actually even brought up in a heart-to-heart with Dunban, too!

And then Riki's favourite colour probably being green is also interesting for much the same reason why Sharla's favourite colour is interesting. But it's also kinda surprising to see that he likes part at all, given that the above-mentioned heart-to-heart also mentions that Shulk once gave him a part, and he had no idea what to make of it

Which leaves Melia, whose favourite colour is purple - and her not liking nature and bugs is just peak sheltered kid energy.

i feel like ridley is incredibly important (and funny) as a main antagonist in nintendo's roster because of the dichotomy compared to the other main antagonists of the other series when you think about them

bowser is the ruler of an entire kingdom who actually cares about his subjects, and is madly in love with the princess of the neighboring kingdom but is incredibly misguided in his attempts to marry her which only leads to alienating the two further and making the situation worse, and is never taken seriously because he's not all that bad a guy deep down (and pure evil shows up every other week who he is absolutely nothing when compared to them)

ganon is the result of a spiteful curse on hyrule by an angry demon who wanted nothing more than for the downfall of his enemies, doomed to constantly come back and fail to achieve his evil schemes because he's stuck in an endless cycle of bloodshed and saved worlds, and whenever he's unlucky enough to be a human instead of a boar thing he is the king of a people who have one of the harshest environments possible and has to put up with the hyrule royal family's bullshit and will always fail to do what he believes is best for his people because the prophecy says so

kirby kirby lore gives me a headache so i'm not even going to try and get into the ancients void termina dark matter bullshit

pokemon jumps between insane people attempting to achieve their perception of perfection and destroying/endangering their family, themselves and/or their entire region/world as a result (i didn't realize this described so many of the antagonists until right now, huh), the mafia, satan, and also ghetsis who honestly deserves his own paragraph but i'm lazy

i know nothing about fire emblem & persona but i think they're a big part of the nintendo pantheon too somebody fill this in for me, and i could probably go on with this with smaller series like earthbound but i'm lazy

but then with metroid, there's ridley. there's no long description, there's no underlying complicated motivation or deep fleshed out character, there is just a really angry sadistic purple space dragon who hates you in particular, and continuously comes back just for another attempt at revenge because he fucking despises you and everything you stand for and he will always come back.

which is even funnier considering there are actual metroid villains that fit with the other nintendo villains in that way, like dark samus is the avatar of a lovecraftian horror that takes the form of basically living uranium, mother brain is a rogue AI control freak who betrayed her creators, raven beak's whole "power is everything." shtick and being willing to just doom his entire army to death by X just for his own personal gain, the metroids themselves are bioweapons created to stop the rise of a horrible skinwalker parasite only to turn on their creators and be used for evil by numerous outside forces, but then ridley and i guess the space pirates in general are just really really angry jerks who have a vendetta against the protagonist and there's nothing more to them

and also if i was the main antagonist of a game i'd be ridley so there's that

Robin Fire Emblem is the best gender separation in the series.

Excuse the smash render, this is the only fullbody I could find that had both of their full outfits.

Look at these cunts. These genuinely look like the same persons but with different gender expressions. I do think the character creator leaves a bit to be desired, as does any character creator with gender-locked features, but on their own merits, with regards to the base designs, the two robins are the perfect gender select. They are wearing the exact same outfit, and they didn’t force F!Robin to show way more skin. I genuinely believe these are the same character. Considering what’s to come, I’m amazed at a design this good in a Fire Emblem game. There is the Gacha game, and the distribution of alts between these two is, Not Great, but that is a topic for another post. Please take a moment to appreciate these designs before we continue. Things will get worse, quickly.

In contrast, look at the Corrins.

While their outfits are very similar, there is one glaring difference. F!Corrin has to show off her thighs, while M!corrin gets to wear much more practical tights. There is literally no reason for this to be a gender difference, aside from the notion that there is something inherently sexual about femininity. I don’t even necessarily think F!Corrin needs to cover up, I just want the designs to show the same amount of skin, because they’re the same person. Corrin is a weirdo, they walk around barefoot in impractical armor, if they want to show some skin, that’s fine, I just want some equality.

Byleth, however is where Fire Emblem *really* shits the bed.

Excuse my use of Gacha game art, but the poses in their Three Houses renders are so different it makes comparing them there very difficult. (Which is probably a conversation to be had in itself.)

That being said, what the fuck is this? What the fuck is F!Byleth wearing? The difference in skin shown is fucking STAGGERING. While certain elements of the outfit are consistent enough to make it clear these are intended to be the same character, holy shit are these outfits different, and as a direct result, they communicate the characters very differently. M!Byleth looks like the stoic, ruthless mercenary of few words they’re supposed to be, where F!Byleth looks more fun and quirky in exact fucking opposition to the way they are characterized. And for fucking what? F!Byleth’s outfit isn’t even hot, it’s a category 5 Disaster of Fashion.

And to round off this conversation, I’ll mention Alear.

Comparing these two is surprisingly difficult, for me at least, because their fits are so fucking bizzare and nonsensical they’re difficult to even parse. That said, there are similar ideas going on in both outfits, but F!Alear feels a lot more like a sexy cosplay of M!Alear, than a more feminine take on the same design. Replacing the shorts with stockings is already an odd, yet predictable choice, as it continues the pattern of female characters showing thighs, but here it especially feels like it hurts the design, as the weird baggy shorts of M!Alear alter their silhouette, an element that F!Alear loses out on entirely. Much more egregious, however, is what happens to M!Alear's Jacket. It becomes some kind of miniature corset that removes an entire dimension from her design. I don’t think it’s as god awful as what F!Byleth has going on, because I can at least compare the two outfits directly, but it’s really not great.

Anyway, this is why Robin is the best My Unit, and nobody even comes close.

Also why gender is a fucking scam.
