I really do wish we had gotten a bit more of a look at Benji's world outside of Victor, but even with what little backstory we've gotten... like, shit. Boy has some valid fucking emotional trauma.

To start with, assuming he just turned 17 and the reference to both him and Victor being a couple of 16yos was just him forgetting he just turned 17, this would mean he had to have started drinking at least at 15.

he's fifteen and there is *something* in his life that is grinding this self hatred into him hard enough to make him start drinking to forget it. even if his parents are "white liberals" (which in my experience mostly means performative liberals: lowkey conservative and prone to letting shit like casual racism and homophobia slide because, well, it would be rude to make a scene, they're just products of their time, no harm meant), kids don't learn this level of self hatred if there's a counterbalance of acceptance and unconditional love at home.

So, he's 15 and drinking and canonly having sex (underage and intoxicated) with girls in an attempt to make himself into something he doesn't hate.

Oh, and at some point here he had to turn sixteen and get his license. Please please tell me he wasn't drinking enough to be able to mask that during a driver's test. like, I'm genuinely terrified of this thought.

So by season two, he just got his one year chip. Season one, he and Derek hit their one year anniversary.

this means they were together before the accident and before he came out.

So this 15 year old boy, who hates that he's gay enough to attempt to drink it away while he forces himself to sleep with girls to prove his heterosexuality meets Derek... out, proud and completely dismissive of anything remotely hetro.

he's 15 (16) and disgusted with himself for being gay and falling into a relationship where he's always hearing all the ways he's just. not. gay. enough.

(that sounds familiar.)

He's anxious and drinking and hiding and falling in (first) love and probably not in the world's best headspace as he ventures further and further into exploring his sexuality with Derek (and hating that he's not ever gay enough for him) and hating the fact that he's too gay to force himself to be straight while trying to drown all these conflicting emotions in more alchohol.

And then the accident happens. (if it *was* an accident, who knows what was actually going through his mind that night.)

He wakes up in the hospital and realizes how close he came to dying and it scares him out of the closet. That's a shit way to come out, let's be real.

(Edited to add in the whole "dad took him to a strip club to try and make him straight via paying a grown woman to give his 16 year old son a lap dance" thing, because yikes.)

So now he's gay and an alcoholic and getting his license suspended and somehow now in an open relationship with a very out and proud gay man who has no patience for any pretense of heterosexuality and how does he ask for a little bit of time to unlearn all this mess in his head and learn to actually love himself as who he is before forcing himself into the public eye? Does he?

Or does he quickly learn how fast the people who *know* about his alcoholism will hone in on any bad moment, bad day, slight dip in emotional stability? Does he very quickly learn how to hide when he's struggling behind a smile and a joke and his music and channel his frustration and self hatred into a sketchbook he never let's anyone see?

And then there's Victor.

Victor makes the anxious voices go quiet, he make the noise of all the worry and the anger and, yeah, that constant lingering disgust (that he can't figure out how to get rid of) go a little fuzzy. Still there, but manageable.

He falls in love.

He falls in love and tries to hide it, because Derek, despite the feeling of being off, has been there through it all. He taught him how to be gay in all the ways Benji never knew before (and even if some of them don't fit, even if some of the jokes grate a bit, he's still thankful he had someone to teach him (that line didn't sound like it came from Benji.)).

But Derek also makes him anxious and he still feels like he has to hide behind a happy smile, but... not with Victor. He feels like maybe... maybe Victor would be able to handle seeing him without the mask on.

He lets himself fall.

The summer bubble is perfect and beautiful and he wishes they could live in it forever.

The bubble pops.

Victor isn't ready to fully announce that he's gay, which Benji understands, he does, he's been there and he's not going to force Victor to be visible until he's ready, and plus the secret love language thing feels good and he's a little bummed they didn't get to use it more, but now Victor is out and proud and...

His mom can't even look at his boyfriend.

He tries to understand but he doesn't like seeing Victor hurt and he doesn't like the way her hesitation and avoidance make that seed of self-disgust in his chest flair up. But Victor says she's trying, so he has to let it go.

But it hurts, every single time.

And hearing about her singing Broadway tunes over their dinner table with another gay boy, who is far more flamboyant and open about it then Benji has *ever* been able to bring himself to be, just makes it very clear (in his heart even if his head logically knows otherwise) that it's him she has a problem with.

That seed of disgust blooms a little more when Victor hangs up that call.

She can tell, can't she, how disgusting he actually is? There's a spiral waiting to happen.

Then his birthday dinner, his parents pushing right past his discomfort and sharing something he wasn't ready to yet. The argument outside. The things they both said.

Going over after Victor texted him, hoping to make up, hoping Victor was able to handle seeing him without that mask and thinking for a sweet beautiful moment that it wouldn't end in disaster.

In full on, pure and undisguised disgust.

Losing the mask in a moment of hurt and anger and yeah, he probably shouldn't have said that in front of Victor's brother but... would it have ever been said otherwise?

Being sent away, just like that.

Yeah, that spiral was happening.

And then finding out that Victor was just like everyone else who knew about his alcoholism. Another person he had to wear a smile for... but Victor was never supposed to be in that category. How did he even make that work now?

Could he even?

But, hey, at least this time he did ask for time to get his head sorted out.

But even as nice as it was to have Victor's mom come and apologize and attempt to make things right, it didn't magically fix everything. Healing doesn't work like that.

But maybe bailing on the wedding was a mistake.

Maybe going was a mistake.

Maybe everything from the first time he took a drink was a mistake.

Who even knows where this is going anymore?

I have USAA as my auto insurance. Here's the back story. What is The Cheapest Auto Insurance for A Beginner?

Can I still be on my parents car insurance policy if they are in a different state?

I live in California while my family lives in Utah. I have been on my family policy and about a year ago I registered my car here in CA. CA requires insurance (which I have, but in UT). My family is still paying for my insurance but the license plate listed is my old Utah plate but I am unsure if that counts now that I have CA plates. Does anybody know details behind this?

mmk, here is the activity i created for our event this weekend. i was so anxious about it because i’d taken something and changed so many elements from the original activity and we’d NEVER done anything like it (this is my 12th year doing this) so it could have gone so horribly. i kept saying to our director of programs “well ... as long as they learn SOMETHING it’ll be okay.” he had a lot more confidence in what i’d created than i did. 

this is a version of a simulation called archie bunker’s neighborhood. in that, you randomly assign “roles” to participants. roles are racial and ethnic categories. then, throughout the simulation the participants are treated as though they belong to those categories. i asked around in our org if any other site had done a version of this, and i got the file for a high school version, where participants are assigned to “roles” that are racial or ethnic categories, or categories like nerds, jocks, lgbt, handicapped, etc. And then they were to be treated according to stereotypes associated with those groups. It had suggested treatment for each group that made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable. So I stripped away anything that students could identify with on a personal level and assigned them colors. I figured they could get the point without putting them in a situation that would hit THAT close to home. I didn’t want to have crying teenagers on my hands, just thoughtful ones.

the underlying point was to simulate the institutionalized discrimination that exists in our society. we had ~200 16yo kids. we split them in half and then split each half into 10 different groups. the top group (red) had a table and chairs. next was orange with just chairs, then yellow with no chairs or table but the same amount of space, then green with a little less space, and all the way down (blue, teal, purple, pink, fuchsia, lime) with the last group having very little space. grouping was random. they each received a packet with instructions to create a model of a new high school (whoever had the best model would win!!), using the budget listed on the page and the rules on another page. the red group got the most complete rules, the lime group got hardly any instruction. red had a budget of $15,000, the lime group had a budget of $4,000. (it was a sliding scale down the colors.)

obviously having less space is the easy visual representation of discrimination. they didn’t know they all had less money, or less instruction, however. and to start, everyone was bent over their worksheet working as a group to complete the activity. no one initially had any outward qualms about their situation. we had 40 minutes to run the simulation and i didn’t want the red group to get too far too quickly, but after about five minutes i started to panic (only a couple of kids from lime had started to get walked to detention for breaking the rules they didn’t know existed, and no one in any other group seemed to realize anything was happening). after ten minutes, i had the “principals” (2 over-21yo adults) go see the top three groups and tell them that their budgets looked great and they should take it to the “school secretary” (other adults) to get approved. i told the school secretaries to approve whatever they had. 

the younger volunteers were acting as hall monitors and were instructed to treat the ambassadors according to their color (red the best, and as the colors descended they were treated worse). if a red was at the end of the line, they were told to escort the red to the front. whenever they were asked “why do they get to cut?” the answer was “because they’re red.”

fifteen minutes in, the lower groups (pink, fuchsia, lime) started to chant “EQUAL RIGHTS! EQUAL RIGHTS!” their members who had been in detention (which was placed near the red group) had seen how other groups were being treated better. once that chant started i was relieved -- they figured it out. at least, SOME of them did -- the red groups didn’t even look up from their work. (the people who say white privilege doesn’t exist!!) i found out afterward that one person from an orange group (just one!) left their space and went to a lime group and asked what she could do to help them. they responded “nothing!” and she went back to work with her group. 

i had put 200+ yards of masking tape down on the floor to show where everyone was supposed to be. on student in the fuchsia group tore up the tape that separated his group from the middle “hallway” where the adults were seated at tables. some of the younger volunteers came to me panicked “i told him to stop!” i told them, “that’s fine, you can tell them to stop, but don’t physically stop them. if they want to tear up all the tape, think about what that means.” 

but it still hadn’t gotten far enough. i sent one of my “fomenters” down to the lower groups -- “hey, you guys haven’t even gotten your materials and the red groups are almost done, what’s up with that?” and next to someone who was a purple, i said loudly to his hall monitor, “you know, there’s so many more of them than there are of you, if they wanted to walk around without an escort, they could get away with it if enough made that decision.” another student who had more privilege took his hallpass down to someone in a lower group and escorted their members through the activity.

it was interesting to watch the middle groups, who had enough to think they could succeed (build the best model), turn on the lower groups who were chanting and tearing up tape. at one point, the lower groups got out of their boxed and sat down and linked arms -- “you can’t take us to detention!” -- and the girl from an orange group came back to sit with them. she was asked by my fomenter “why are you here instead of helping your own group?” she said that she wanted to bring awareness of the situation to the higher groups.

eventually, the lower groups pulled up all of their tape (less for me to clean up later!!!!), started chanting again, and after having everyone who had a model to turn theirs in, i ended the simulation. i did a whole group debrief that focused on having the red group describe their experience (they were booed by everyone when they said what their budget was), and then moved down to the lime group. one girl i noticed had been very outspoken about how it wasn’t fair that she was going to detention all the time. she had some good stuff to say, and i asked them who’d been the first to pull up the tape. they all pointed to one of our vietnamese kids. i asked him why he’d done it and he stood up, took the microphone, and said, “because color is a social construct.” he handed the microphone back, sat down, and everyone cheered.

sunday at our closing ceremony we traditionally have a few memorable quotes read out and that was one. it got cheers again.

the real key was the small group debriefs, and from what i heard as i walked around, most of them figured it out. it was very easy to see the inequality, and i had hoped that talking about actions that were taken in the simulation would translate to talking about actions that could be taken in real life. i had one student come up to me afterwards asking for the instructions for the simulation so he could bring it back to his high school. i needed to do a full write-up and clean-up anyway (all docs i had were written just so i could understand them). some seminars do a privilege assessment activity (it’s called something something line?? idk) that i’ve done in staff development but without the proper counselor support i wouldn’t want to do that with 200 high schoolers. 

anyway. you can feel better about teenagers. this weekend always gives me hope for our future. :)
