A lion in a fresco from a monastery in Burgos, Spain, ca. 1200. Medieval European depictions of lions are often not very accurate. This is not because medieval Europeans had no access to lions -- there were some lions in captivity in Europe at the time, and there were books circulating with accurate pictures of them. Rather, artists were likely not interested in depicting lions as they actually looked in favor of expressing a lesson or concept.

Today's #MicroMondays is definitely #notalion. He's Leo, and you can find him and his fuzzy muzzle on f. 23r of LJS 463, a 15th century German compilation of medical and astrological texts. Online: https://franklin.library.upenn.edu/catalog/FRANKLIN_9948425633503681

Please enjoy this incunable woodcut of St. Mark and his symbolic lion (or perhaps #NotALion). They hold a place of honor in our collection of incunable leaves.⠀ NE905 .S2⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #incunable #lions #medieval #iconography #woodcuts #bibliophile #bookstagram #booklover #rarebooks #specialcollections #librariesofinstagram #iglibraries #mizzou #universityofmissouri #ellislibrary #ifttt
