year of art - 2023
This was a year of big challenges! Finishing my WIPs, artfight, half of whumptober, and winning nanowrimo. I posted less, but I feel like the quality improved with some active study in paint techniques and composition. I'm cheating on the wheel by using my realism art for the last two but I didn't finish any of my fanart projects in either month...
I don't actually know what to resolve for 2024! ( ̄▽ ̄*)ゞ There's still a million things I need to improve, of course, especially complex compositions. I think I'd also like to go back to simpler pieces, like doodles and plain character shots. That's very contradictory~ I'll just make up goals as they come.
As always, thank you to everyone for your likes and reblogs and lovely comments. I really treasure them. ^^ Have a great new year~!

and with that, i'm all caught up on my (watercolor) WIPs!!! feels amazing to knock out that huge pile~
i can finally switch over to cotton paper! nothing was stopping me except i promised myself i'd finish what was on my wood pulp papers first. there's a few projects i'd already like to work on, but i'll probably take things easy for a while lol

year of art - 2022
the year I got a new hobby!
well, that and I’m still trying to practice more of the technical side of art!! I’ve been soaking up books on composition, color, and light and doing more landscape studies. still not as much plein air as I hoped, but there was some...
also i finally caved and got into alcohol markers. they’re prettyyyy, though i still haven’t found the “flow” of stopping and uncapping markers every time i need a new color. i guess i'll just have to use them more~
as usual, i have improvement and productivity goals for my fanart for the new year, but the biggest goal is just keep it fun! art is still my favorite hobby, and when time is limited it always wins over the others. now you know why i still haven’t finished BOTW orz  but yeah, just drawing my silly faves whenever i want would feel like a success to me~
thanks for all your encouragement over the past years! i’ll do my best to keep improving! have a good 2023!! 🥳

Just dropping by to say that I love your art so much! If it's okay to ask, do you make fan arts of other fandoms as well, or have other profiles intended for that? (you don't have to answer if you're not comfortable, though. Just wanted to express my appreciation ^^)
thanks for the nice message! (〃 ̄▽ ̄)ノ~♡ it made my day!
I sometimes make art for other fandoms when the inspiration hits, like blue exorcist, biscuit hammer, and legend of zelda. but i put everything on this blog, so there's not much in comparison to my DN fanart… xD

year of art - 2021
the year i got back into digital art~
it’s been a surprisingly long year. some of these paintings feel like they were done far far into the past! i don’t remember any significant change in my style or skills; maybe this was more of a refinement period?
(i also did quite a bit of realism offline, which showed some improvement!)
my goals for 2022 are to finish my WIPs, do even more realism, use up a big chunk of my supplies, and, as always, improve my compositions and anatomy~
thank you to everyone who’s supported me. your kind attention makes my day when i see it, and it stokes the flames of my anime art passion~
we’ve almost made it through another year! good job and good luck 💪🎉🎉🎉

Hi. I was wondering what are your thoughts, feelings or whatever is in your head about DNAngel's ending? For me is a weird wave of emotions. PS: I aways gonna love your art <3
Hi, thanks a lot for the message! I’m happy my art was enjoyable for you! I’m still going to love DN and make art for it~ Though I have mixed feelings about the ending too~
After 23 years, the series is finally over! I’ve been following it since the 3rd English volume was released, so DN has been a huge part of my life. It feels good to finally know the ending. I’m grateful for all the happy memories, friendships, and skills its given me.
It’s a relief to see that the story is finished, but I don’t love the ending. On the bright side, if it were a totally satisfying series (like Satoshi Mizukami's works) i probably wouldn't feel compelled to create a lot for it. Dissatisfaction and unanswered questions are very inspiring for me!
MAJOR SPOILERS BELOW
To start with the negative: I really really don’t like “everyone forgets” endings. I tolerate them when they're done well (like in Your Name), but it always feels like a huge waste of development and potential. I don’t think it fit the story of DN, and it instead hurt every character’s ending. Risa, Riku, and Takeshi should have had a better resolution for Dark in their lives.
Even with the frequent references to dreams in all of Part 2, I don't understand what the finale's message is supposed to be. The dreams of your youth stay in your heart even if you forget them? We can hold onto the love in our dreams even if we can never achieve them?
If Sensei is suggesting Dark will return someday like With did, then I don’t hate it as much but... I like the other characters more than Dark so I still don’t like their amnesia lol.
(I’m probably going to find an excuse for them to eventually remember or pretend they never forgot~)
For the positive: the art is BEAUTIFUL. Sensei is such an inspiration. I keep staring at Satoshi’s tears and Kei’s death. I love those two characters so their colored page made me happy. I liked the final look at Kokuyoku! It was nice that the side artworks could be helpful in the last fight, though I don’t think it made much sense. I’ll take it anyway~
Daisuke helping Satoshi was a great callback to when Daisuke admitted that he regretted having to rely so much on Dark and Satoshi. And it was just beautiful all around. Emiko's conversation with Kosuke was cute and made me smile. =v=  Satoshi comforting Risa felt poignant too! That hug was very pretty. I was very happy to see the kids (minus Riku orz) going to school together in their high school uniforms.
All in all, I still love DN for its art and characters even if it’s not an ending I wanted. ^^
Please feel free to tell me your thoughts and feelings too!

I know I post a lot for my main fandom. In different mediums and formats and blogs. And share a lot of headcanons and AUs and meta or whatever. And basically have no life LOL.
This has been bouncing around my head for a while and I want to say publicly: all of my ideas are always free too use. They don’t “belong” to me. I just come up with something, think it’d be fun, and play around with it.
I’m never going to say “no, you can’t use this headcanon or scenario or aesthetic or anything”.
I know for a fact people can and do come up with similar ideas independently of each other, and that's cool. Even if someone were inspired by something I made (such an honor @@), go for it, please.
Don’t ask me for permission and don’t credit me. Just do it!
If this seems weird, well, imagine I'm paying it forward for all the free art tutorials, references, and inspiring artworks I've consumed over the years. If I can give something back to the world besides my obsession with side characters, awesome~ But if not, I at least don’t want to restrict or discourage anyone’s creativity. ^^

year of art - 2020
AKA the year fugitive finally figures out how light works
okay, what were my goals for this year? landscapes, full-body poses, and aesthetic shots. and i actually did those sometimes so it counts as a success??
i felt big improvements this year! i worked with a lot of paint colors that i don’t usually use, and i’m drawing faster! next year i resolve to focus on anatomy and composition, use more gouache and washi tape, and finish my big projects that have been piling up!!
✨ HAVE A GREAT 2021!! ✨

31 fanarts by @fugitivehues + 31 fanfics / 12k words by @keikotwins
thank you @tenrou-no-hoshi for the DNcember prompt list! it was a hell of a challenge but fun too. and i’d been begging for someone to make a fandom event lol
all my thanks to my dear friend Keiko for collaborating with me on this~ you’re great to work with (and helped me a lot when planning compositions). your writing always impressed.
from the start we had agreed to use self-indulgent and/or crack ideas when possible. it was the best way to stay motivated~ i’m happy we could finally bring some of these AUs to life. and i feel like a new artist after this lmao. there’s fluctuation in quality and style, but-- backgrounds!!! that was a lot of exp.
i appreciate everyone who followed along with our collab! i hope it was entertaining!

I'm a long time fan of your style and the soft but bright quality of your watercolor work! Do you have any advice for getting started learning? Or is it a matter of starting and doing?
thank you so much!! that’s very nice of you!! ⁺✧(˶´⚰︎`˵)⁺‧
sure, just starting and doing watercolor is definitely important, because experience is the only way to intuitively know which paint+water ratios give the effects you want. that's also kind of frustrating in the beginning (or at least it was for me) so maybe some tips will make that smoother...
Here's one of my old guides on mixing bright colors. Most watercolor sets at least come with a "split primary" palette, with both a cool and a warm version of each primary color. Getting familiar with the mixing behaviors of your paints will help so much!
Put more water and paint on your brush than you think you need. Watercolors become lighter when dry, and without enough water they dry too quickly on the paper.
Practice the three main techniques: wet paint on wet paper, wet paint on dry paper, and dry paint on dry paper. (I mostly use wet on dry in my art, but the others have their uses, especially in backgrounds!)
The more you rub the paper with your brush, the more it separates the fibers and makes colors less bright and clear. So try to do your layer with as few brush strokes as possible. Working from the lightest/largest areas to the darkest/smallest is recommended.
Let each layer dry completely unless you’re going for a specific effect!! If you add the next layer too soon, the one under it might get wiped away. orz
Maybe plan your colors and shadows in advance (digitally or in thumbnails). It helps me focus on painting without stopping to figure out what to do next!
Put a tissue under your hand or wear a glove while you work to prevent skin oils from repelling the water.
It’s fine if the paper starts warping while you’re painting. It’ll probably dry less warped, and you can flatten it fully once you’re done.
I’m sure you already know this, but there’s a ton of watercolor tutorials and speedpaint videos on Youtube. They’re great for seeing how others mix colors and blend with water, as well as getting an idea for how the paint moves on the paper and what it looks like when dry. Consider looking at copic/alcohol marker artists too, since they also work from lightest-to-darkest and blend colors according to similar rules. I watch videos almost every day; it’s a relaxing way to learn! ^^
Also, here's my process for painting a character, if you haven’t seen that!
Below is mostly about supplies, but it's stuff that I wish I knew in my first years of painting!
To get smooth gradients and soft blending, consider investing in good quality paper most of all. Basically, Paper > Brushes > Paint.
You can do almost anything with student-quality paints. Just check what the manufacturer says about lightfastness. Paints with a low lightfastness score will fade over time.
You only need a few decent brushes ([synthetic] sable or squirrel for large areas of color, and maybe a very small or calligraphy brush with a sharp point for details and lineart, if those are in your style).
If you use "pan" paints, consider using an old spare brush to wet them, because pans will wear out your brushes faster than tube paint.
Your paper absolutely must be watercolor or mixed media paper, because they contain "sizing" that allows the paints to blend smoothly and not stain immediately. “Cold press 300gsm” is probably the most versatile texture and weight. Cotton paper is stronger and more forgiving than cellulose papers but is also more expensive.
Unless you’re working in a watercolor sketchbook, only one side of the paper will have sizing. The "wrong” side can't handle watercolor.
If your finished artwork won’t lay flat, then lightly wet the back of the paper with water, wipe off the excess, and flatten the damp sheet between some heavy books.
I use mixed media paper to practice color mixtures and thumbnails. And I do a ton of color mixing just for fun. 10/10 would recommend filling pages with gradients and stuff!
SO YEAH, watercolor is totally worth the learning curve and is super fun to paint with once you’re more comfortable. I hope you have a great time with your painting! ^^ Let me know if you have any more questions!

those recent botw sceneries are so gorgeous, do you have a print shop/would you ever consider it?
thanks so much! (ˊ•͈ ◡ •͈ˋ)  i appreciate the question, but i won’t open a shop. if tumblr’s resolution is good enough for you, you’re free to make personal prints of any of my works!

@cup-ah-jho (ty for you nice tags btw!!) here are the markers i’m using! the 24 set of “arteza real brush pens”. the color selection really is fun; a lot of them have a big range when diluted vs. saturated, and they all blend well!
apparently the official recommended way to color with them is to dip into water and then blend, but i prefer to do this: rub each marker into a different well in my palette, blend as needed in the other wells, and then paint with a normal paintbrush and water!
probably shouldn’t do that rough method if you plan to do lettering or fine lineart afterward though - and i think they’d actually be really nice for those. these are water-based markers so not waterproof of course, and probably not lightfast either... ^^;

year of art - 2019
early in the year i (accidentally, i swear) stopped the city/landscapes that i’d planned in my resolution. BUT i did end up incorporating backgrounds into a lot of my paintings, and i feel a lot more comfortable doing so! mission mostly accomplished~
(i still want to do ‘scapes so i think they’ll find a place in my art next year too!)
to get very personal... i feel like the quality of my art decreased in the second half of 2019. i had even more going on in my life and much less time and energy for art than i used to. even with reasons, i’m sure other creators know how discouraging it is to look back on your old works and prefer them over your new ones.
i think i can draw and paint faster and with more variety in poses, compositions, and colors. i just haven’t had enough chances to prove it and also test new styles. so... watch out for next year~
resolution for 2020 - full-body illustrations and aesthetic shots!
maaany of my projects are waiting on these skills to improve! i’m a bit nervous but 100% ready to go!
may 2020 be better for all of us!
