I got my Covid booster shot today.
Just a reminder that covid doesn't discriminate. You can be a healthy person and still die. I'm never one nor will I ever be one to tell anyone what to do with their bodies but I will routinely post about my son's battle and death from Covid in hopes that people will make an informed choice and get vaccinated. I won't let his death be in vain. If we save even one life with his story it is worth it.
PLEASE CONSIDER VACCINATIONS.
We put Keiths story out there in hopes that it would be a recovery story.
Instead he ended up with Covid pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, 3 chest tubes, collapsed lungs, sepsis, lung infections, kidney failure, liver failure, (multiple organ failure) blood clots, dialysis, hydropneumothorax, plueral effusions, ventilator, Ecmo machine, multiple blood transfusions, low oxygen saturation levels, proned multiple times, medically paralyzed and eventually the loss of brain function.ECT. And these are just the things I remember from the top of my head.
Now image if your loved ones had to go through that or if your loved ones had to endure watching you deteriorate like that.
This is the reality of what Covid can do.
I willl always be proud of him for wanting to save others. I'll continue to do as wished before his death and ask others to please consider vaccinations..

This is the 30th portrait in a series I've started to memorialize lives lost to covid. This is Gregory Allan Leigh. Gregory passed away from covid in September of 2020. He was a mechanic from Southaven MS. Gregory was a loving husband, father, brother, son, nephew and uncle. His sister described him as funny, a prankster, loyal, and sarcastic. Greg enjoyed playing the drums, fostering pit bulls with this wife, and spending time with his wife and daughter. He was a father figure and friend, and was the glue that held his family together. Look closely to learn more about Gregory and the many reasons he was special ❤️ Project information: I am finishing up a series of portraits to memorialize lives lost to covid. I am no longer taking submissions for portraits. Portraits are drawn entirely with text (provided by families) describing who they were and the many reasons they were special. So many families were unable to grieve together or even hold funerals for their loved ones due to this awful pandemic. Participants in this project are offered the opportunity to come together to provide text, photos, and handwritten notes to be included in these collaborative word portraits. The hope is to help families through loss with art. The idea is to address the humanity behind the statistics. So many of us just see a staggering number of deaths, and don't entirely equate them with actual people. Acrylic and colored pencils on illustration board. #wordportraits #acrylicpainting #portraitpainting #art #portraits #portraitlove #coloredpencil #mixedmediaart #memorialportrait #covidkindness #covid_19 #covid #notjustanumber #portrait #portraiture #portraitdrawing #portraits #wordart #wordartist #wordstoinspire #wearamask #ɢᴇᴛᴠᴀᴄᴄɪɴᴀᴛᴇᴅ #fuckcovid19 #memorial https://www.instagram.com/p/Cc3wzgRJX8b/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Okay real talk here for a minute. Even with the weightloss... I still struggle with my body image and how people see me. So I needed a reminder today at how far I've come and to understand that there is more to loving yourself besides the number on the scale. Insecurities suck, but they're a battle you must face and overcome. To those out there struggling always believe in yourself and remember to look back and see how far you've come and focus on where you're headed. Understand you're not alone and you got this! #badazznotfatazz #beautifulmess #notjustanumber #hurricaneinmysoul #perfectmess #wonderfullychaotic #nsv #checkpoint #wereallinthistogether #bodyimage https://www.instagram.com/p/B1WQkfiH5-V/?igshid=p3j44gzjcm06

It's been a month today since you passed Keith. I'm working on focusing on loving your life, loving YOU and trying to push back the memories of illness and death. I'm remembering your vibrant energy, your infectious laughter and your talk and walk a mile a minute can't keep up with you self. I miss you son. I'll love you forever and ever. 💕

This is the 29th portrait in a series I've started to memorialize lives lost to covid. This is Tobias Noboa. Tobias passed away from covid in May of 2020. He was a retired yellow cab driver from Corona, Queens, NY. Tobias was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His granddaughter described him as kind, caring, patient and humble. Tobias enjoyed going to casinos, listening to music, and sitting on the front stoop on a pretty day and watching the kids play. He was a role model, who forgave easily and gave quiet advice. Look closely to learn more about Tobias and the many reasons he was special ❤️ Project information: I am working on a series of portraits to memorialize lives lost to covid. Each of these numbers has a name– and a face–and a story. They are human beings just like you and me. And we won’t stop until each and every one is free.

I remember reading about a bombing in Baghdad last July that killed 382 and wondering why more wasn't said about it in the press. I also remember wondering at my somewhat muted response to this senseless and massive scale tragedy. I certainly was saddened by the news, as I'm sure many were, but it didn’t completely overwhelm, paining me to my core as many other tragedies have. Why did I not mourn for these victims like I did for those victims of the Paris or Belgium attacks or for those lost in Germany or even Turkey? Why did I read the story of the massive truck bomb detonated in a crowded, upscale section of Baghdad on a warm summer night, take pause to consider, and then, relatively quickly, move on to something most likely quite pedestrian and trivial? What is the difference in the tragedies and my respective response to each?
The answer to the former is nothing, tragedy is tragedy, senseless and brutal, ephemeral yet eternal. The answer to the latter is I just don’t know.
And I still struggle with this.
I remember being awake into the early hours of the morning after the Paris nightclub attacks; tossing and turning in bed, unable to sleep, considering the lives of those lost at the nightclub or the cafe, attending to activities that I, myself, might well have participated in had I been in Paris that night (I love the Eagles of Death Metal). I think I even quoted U2’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday” on social media lamenting “How long, how long must we sing this song?”
I don’t, however, remember how I slept the night after hearing of this Baghdad bombing. I don’t remember anything about the following day or any extended reading I may have done on the story. I’m not sure if I commented on social media about the tragedy or spent any time considering what life would be like if this happened on the Magnificent Mile.
This probably means the Baghdad bombing didn’t leave an indelible mark on me and that fact scares me.
But why didn’t it? I feel I’m a compassionate and empathetic individual who cares deeply about the well being of others, especially those who might be at a disadvantage. So why the disconnect?
382 dead including a father and his two young boys, another son, burned so badly his body had to be identified by DNA. What about the dancer, undeterred by antiquated biases and inspired my Michael Jackson, hoping to some day move to a city “where people love dancing?” And what of the young dentist killed whose wife gave birth to a son the day he was buried? Why did I not cry for them? Why did I offer only a fleeting, somewhat perfunctory prayer on their behalf? Was I that cold and desensitized or did I have some subconscious, predisposed bias toward the Iraqi people that made me less able to mourn for them, with them? And what if one of those boys blown to bits was my son?
That final question gave me pause and maybe herein lies that key to true empathy.
The answer to the rest of these (and many more) questions is simply, I don’t know. But I will endeavor to figure it out, and maybe this piece is a first step. Finally, I will morn, however late and disingenuous it may seem, for the 382 souls lost at the hand of senseless barbarism and hate. Because no matter the theater, life is precious and good.
