Bà Kamala Harris sinh năm 1964, là con gái của cặp vợ chồng gốc Jamaica và Ấn Độ. Mẹ bà - Shyamala Gopalan - là một nhà khoa học ung thư vú di cư từ Tamil Nadu, Ấn Độ. Năm 1960, để theo học tiến sĩ ngành nội tiết học tại UC Berkeley, bà sang Mỹ. Cha bà, ông Donald J. Harris là một giáo sư danh dự chuyên ngành kinh tế của Đại học Stanford, nhập cư từ Jamaica năm 1961 để học kinh tế tại UC Berkeley.

Bà Harris lớn lên tại Berkeley, California cùng người em gái Maya Harris. Lúc còn nhỏ, bà từng sống tại đường Milvia ở trung tâm Berkeley. Sau đó gia đình Kamala chuyển đến một căn nhà lớn hơn trên đường Bancroft ở Tây Berkeley, một khu vực có lượng lớn người Mỹ gốc Phi.

Tuy nhiên, khi cuộc sống ổn hơn thì cha mẹ bà ly hôn năm bà 7 tuổi. Kamala Harris và em gái sống cùng với mẹ, chỉ cuối tuần 2 chị em mới được đến thăm cha ở Palo Alto. Thời điểm ấy, nạn phân biệt chủng tộc diễn ra rất nặng nề, vì là người da màu nên chị em bà Kamala không được bạn cùng trang lứa chào đón.

Bà là người phụ nữ kiên cường, mạnh mẽ và tự tin.

Khi bà 12 tuổi, Harris và em gái cùng mẹ chuyển đến Montreal, Canada, nơi mẹ bà có một vị trí nghiên cứu tại Bệnh viện Đa khoa Do Thái và giảng dạy tại Đại học McGill. Harris tham dự một trường trung học nói tiếng Pháp có tên Notre-Dame de Grâce và sau đó là Trường Trung học Westmount tại Westmount, Quebec, tốt nghiệp năm 1981.

Sau khi hoàn tất trung học, Harris nhập học Đại học Howard, một trường đại học có lịch sử da màu ở Washington, D.C. Harris bắt đầu sự nghiệp tại văn phòng Công tố viên Quận Alameda, trước khi đ���n nơi lớn hơn là văn phòng của Luật sư thành phố San Francisco. Năm 2003, bà được bầu làm ủy viên công tố của thành phố San Francisco. Năm 2010, sự nghiệp chính trị của Harris lên cao hơn khi bà được bầu làm Tổng Chưởng lý California nhưng phải đến 4 năm sau bà mới được đắc cử.

Đến năm 2016, bà thắng nghị sĩ Loretta Sanchez trong cuộc bầu cử Thượng viện để trở thành thượng nghị sĩ nữ thứ ba của bang California, đồng thời là phụ nữ người Mỹ gốc Phi thứ hai được bầu vào Thượng viện Hoa Kỳ.

Là một thượng nghị sĩ, Kamala Harris ủng hộ cải cách y tế, hợp pháp hóa cần sa, hỗ trợ trao quyền công dân cho người nhập cư không có giấy tờ, đạo luật DREAM, cấm vũ khí tấn công, và cải cách thuế lũy tiến. Bà bắt đầu được quan tâm với những câu hỏi thẳng thắn cho quan chức chính quyền Trump trong những phiên điều trần Thượng viện.

Ngoài thành công trong sự nghiệp, bà còn có gia đình hạnh phúc.

Harris tranh cử ứng viên tổng thống cho Đảng Dân chủ năm 2020 và nhận được sự chú ý cho đến khi kết thúc chiến dịch ngày 3/12/2019. Ngày 11/8/2020, bà được chọn để cùng ông Joe Biden tranh cử tổng thống năm 2020. Bà là người Mỹ gốc Phi đầu tiên và là phụ nữ thứ ba tranh cử Phó Tổng thống của một đảng lớn. Trước đó có bà Geraldine Ferraro năm 1984 và bà Sarah Palin năm 2008

Ngay khi giành được sự ủng hộ của cử tri và trở thành nữ Phó Tổng thống Mỹ đầu tiên của nước Mỹ, trên Twitter chính thức, bà Kamala Harris đã chia sẻ đoạn video thông báo kết quả qua điện thoại cho ông Biden. Ngoài ra, bà còn gọi qua điện thoại: "Chúng ta làm được rồi. Chúng ta làm được rồi, Joe. Ông sẽ là Tổng thống tiếp theo của nước Mỹ".

Sau gần 1 năm nhậm chức, bà Harris đang làm rất tốt công việc của mình. Bà vẫn theo đuổi mục tiêu lớn của mình đó là dành cả cuộc đời để phá vỡ những rào cản và xây dựng những dấu mốc "đầu tiên". Và trong số là việc bà vừa trở thành vị Phó Tổng thống Mỹ đầu tiên thăm chính thức Việt Nam.

Green Party deputy leader Jonathan Pedneault is planning to run for a seat in the House of Commons in an upcoming byelection in Montreal's Notre-Dame-de-Grace--Westmount riding.

The 32-year-old ran on a joint ticket to share the party leadership in November with longtime member of Parliament Elizabeth May.

The party's constitution has not yet been changed to make the pair co-leaders so Pedneault is the deputy leader.

The Notre-Dame-de-Grace--Westmount seat was created in 2015 and the area has long been considered a Liberal stronghold.

It was last held by Liberal MP Marc Garneau, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

A victory for Pedneault in the June 19 vote would see him join May and Mike Morrice as Green Party MPs in Ottawa.
