Voters in the Ontario riding of Oxford and Quebec’s Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Westmount will also head to the ballot box that night.

The NDP (leftist party, associated with unions and social services) won a majority government in Manitoba, one of Canada's central, median-population provinces. This means Wab Kinew is the first First Nations premier in Canadian history! (a position roughly equivalent to being Governor in the US? He's the leader of the Legislative Assembly; provinces don't have an executive branch of government).

This comes after seven years of Progressive Conservative government (right-wing, tax cuts, etc.)

The rural north and most of Winnipeg went with NDP, while the rural south and Steinbach went with PC. Brandon was 50/50. The Liberals (a left-centre party) were a nonfactor.

To Ontario and back

Week 2

We left Edmonton mid morning and drove east on Hwy 16. It took us through some nice farm country for 10-20km. We drove through Elk Island National Park where we saw a nice herd of plains buffalo.  After driving through the park, the landscape changed to gently rolling hills with smaller farms and strips of wooded areas

We drove into Vegreville to check out the worlds largest Ukrainian Easter Egg.  There is much tradition and history on the way they paint and decorate easter eggs. The Elks Lodge created a very nice park and picnic area on the edge of town.

Driving east from there we drove through the rolling hills, a lot of it covered in bush and shrubbery with the occasional grain farms, cattle ranches and small lakes in between.

We drove into the Battlefords. First we checked out South Battleford, looking for the tourist info centre, but it was closed. North Battleford is located on a ridge above the south Saskatchewan River. It looks like a service centre for the farming community of the area.

Then we drove east along long stretches of straight and flat roads towards Saskatoon.  Most of the harvesting was already done.  The farms are massive in size as far as the eye can see.  Neighbours here are 10-20 km apart, no homeless people here …..

We arrived in Saskatoon and checked out the downtown area. We were looking for a campground close to downtown but were unable to find it, as the GPS was confused and kept sending us around in circles.

We did settle in an RV park on the edge of town where we enjoyed a beautiful sunset along with dinner

We left Saskatoon early driving east on Hwy 16 and stopped in Colonsay to have a short visit with our friends Brian and Angelica.

They moved here years ago from Calgary to retire and enjoy the country living. They have a lovely home and are involved in the community.  We said our goodbyes after our surprise visit and drove on east.

This prairie land is endless, more land straight stretches of road with a slight curve every few miles.

We drove by Bid Quill Lake, a large body of water in the middle of the prairies.

We stopped in Yorkton to fill up with gas and beer and decided to travel on to Winnipeg.  It made for a long day of driving, but we were looking forward to have an extra day there.  We arrived at brother Jim’s place at 9, had a short visit before going to bed.

The next morning we made our way into downtown Winnipeg to get our windshield fixed as we picked up a rock chip. We also made it to the Fort on the Red River where we had a nice lunch, found a lovely bakery and walked through the park and across the bridge to St. Bonaface.

It was raining when we left in the morning and we had grey skies all the way to Kenora.  We were advised to drive from Winnipeg to ThunderBay in one stretch, as there was not a lot to see in between, it was an 8 hour drive. We drove though more prairie farms, long flat and straight stretches of Hwy 1.  

As we got closer to Kenora there were fewer farms and more bush along the road.

After Kenora the landscape changed as we came to the Canadian Shield. Rocky out crops dot the landscape here. Lots of bush and shrubbery with the odd cattle ranch, it’s no longer flat lands.

The road took us through low hills and rocky terrain as we arrive at Lakes of the Woods of Ontario.  This is a beautiful area with all the fall colours of gold and red and with the evergreens amongst them.

Every few kilometres we come upon small lakes along the side of the road.  There are over a 1000 lakes in this area, many not named.  Mostly small lakes but also some big ones such as Eagle Lake and Buttler Lake and Wabigoon Lake by Dryden. For the following 250KM there were only small lakes along the road, most of them not shown on our maps and the roads were in good shape.

We also encountered several road construction projects. They were amazing as it showed the difficulties of building highways through this uneven rocky terrain. They cut deep and wide gorges in the granite to straighten out the roads. All that granite gets crushed and is used as bedding for the roads.  

We stopped at Kakabeka Falls for a walk around the falls. Big volume of water going over these falls so it was very noisy

We got into ThunderBay late afternoon and drove to a campsite on the waterfront Linda found online. The GPS took us through town and then out of town towards Lake Superior. We drove alongside of some large grain elevators onto a dirt road into an area with large earth moving equipment. The GPS said that we arrived at our destination. WTF we were at the edge of a big dump. So we turned around and drove back to ThunderBay and towards Kakabeka Falls where we spotted a campground on the way.

We managed to set up camp before dark, made dinner and had a short walk around the campground.

Ben Carr, son of the late Jim Carr, who held the seat from 2015 until his death last December, announced Thursday that he’s looking to take over his father’s role as MP.

“My dad instilled in us a firm belief in the good that can be accomplished through public service,” Carr said in a statement.

“He demonstrated that to us over a lifetime, and most recently, as he represented our community with all his heart — until the day he died. In speaking with so many people since his death, I have a deepened understanding of the responsibility of representing our community.”

Carr, who currently works as vice-president at Indigenous Strategy Alliance, is a lifelong resident of the riding."

Julie Rousse Her work is diverse and expressed through several different experimental music projects based on improvisation : live performances, sound installations, electroacoustic compositions, music scores for dance, performance, films, visual artists and photo documentaries.

Passionate phonographer and noise lover, she is always looking for new sonic sources in her worldwide travels, exploring the possibilities of sound capturing in specifically chosen contexts, working with different recording devices. She oscillates between the purity of the recordings and a special attraction for archaic, lo-fi machines. She uses that sonic collection - in an experimental process - as her raw material, an infinite source of rhythms and colors which she shapes with a real time sound treatment software - real time being the essential element of her spontaneous and chaotic approach. She digs in the sound - intruding in the detail - exploring in search of new textures of raw sounds.

In 2015, she was Laureate of the Institut Français programme Hors les Murs, for a3 months stay for a research around the musical culture of the Mapuche people autochtones from the south of Chile.

With Félicie d’Estienne d’Orves, they created the monumental audiovisual installation EXO - Spatio-Temporal Archeology, inviting the audience to turn towards the sky and contemplate while listening to the multiphonics spatialized compositions the Julie created for each objects pointed by Felicie's lasers.

Since 2018 she is living in Marseille. In 2020 she integrates the Collective Les Ateliers Jeanne Barret where she will have her studio as associated artist.

Pierce Warnecke is a multidisciplinary digital artist at the interection of experimental music, digital arts and video art. He has presented his work in the form of performances, concerts and installations at Rewire, Mutek, ZKM, ManiFeste (IRCAM), CTM, Elektra, KW Institut, La Biennale Nemo, Sonic Acts, Martin Gropius Bau, MAC Montreal, Gray Area SF, Scopitone, LEV Festival, SXSW, FILE, etc.

He co-curates emittermicro label and festival with Kris Limbach and Seiji Morimoto in Berlin since 2011, in addition tp co-curating Le Signal Festival in France with Louis Laurain since 2020.

Between 2017 and 2019 he composed several audiovisual works for the Institute for Sound and Music's Hexadome project in Berlin, San Francisco, Montreal and more. Pierce collaborates often and has worked with Frank Bretschneider, Matthew Biederman, Myriam Bleau, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Louis Laurain, Rodolphe Loubatière, Clémént Edouard and more.

His music has been published on raster (DE), Room40 (AU) and Contour Editions (US). He is represented by Disk Agency in Berlin.

Northwest Ontario: 2nd time's a charm

The route from Winnipeg into Ontario and eastward to Espanola is the only section of my trip that I've driven back & forth on the same road (apart from the Kenora-Thunder Bay stretch where I did take a different way back) as the rest of the 20k drive has really been one big loop across the country, hence 2nd time's a charm! 😀 Having assumed that the weather would be worse in September, I had taken my time going west, camping in beautiful provincial & national parks, so check out those earlier posts to see the full beauty of this region. Now on the way back, I tried to see a few new places and/or revisited some of my favourite spots.

It felt really good to see the Welcome to Ontario sign, as it meant I was heading home... all provinces have their own charm, but Ontario I know best, so that will always remain "my place".

Staying in Kenora for the night, I had contemplated to go see the sunset over Lake of the Woods, but instead I just stayed at the motel trying to fix the pump hose for hopefully a few more paddles. 🤞

In the morning, I took the highway south to Fort Frances, which is an hour longer to Thunder Bay then east to Dryden but has the benefit of not having any trucks. The road is curvy & hilly so that means it's difficult to bypass slow drivers, but I had it mostly to myself to take in the beautiful Canadian Shield and all the lakes - Ontario at its best! 😍

At Sioux Narrows provincial park, I did a small hike up a viewpoint of Regina Bay, the most eastern arm of Lake of the Woods. This was one of those viewpoints where the trees are blocking most of the view 😂 but it felt good anyway to be in the fresh-smelling forest. I surprised a deer that was on the trail nibbling at tree branches so that reminded me that I needed to make some noise from time to time - I was still in bear country after all!,

A bit further south, I had a nice 1.5hr paddle at Caliper Lake provincial park along the shoreline and around a little island. I usually start paddling against the wind to make life easier on the way back, however I had misinterpreted how the wind was being deflected around a hill, so suddenly it did a 180 on me and I got the wind against me also on the way back! 😆 less relaxing than I had envisaged!

Fort Frances is the main town in this corner of Ontario, sharing a river as border with the US similar to Niagara Falls. I had thought of breaking for lunch here, but the waterfront did not really appeal to me, so I drove on and stopped instead at a viewpoint of Rainy Lake, another one of those massive lakes.

For the night, I stopped at a motel in the middle of nowhere 😁 midway to Thunder Bay, where the owner had made pretty flower gardens out of reclaimed wood. Living in Toronto, I had always thought that Kenora and Thunder Bay were kinda in the same neighbourhood "out there", whereas in reality they are over 500km apart, so I was glad to split the drive in two! As a bonus, the motel was across the road from a beautiful lake so happy to sit in a chair taking in the last sun rays of the day. 🥰

In the morning the water was still calm, so I used the motel's dock to launch my SUP and went for a great paddle around several little islands. For me, this is as close to paradise as it gets; blue water, blue sky and some little rocky islands with trees in between them 💖💖

After leaving the motel, it was only a short drive to Quetico provincial park, famed for its backcountry wilderness canoeing... something I was clearly not going to do now, but I still wanted to get a sense of what it looked like. Did a small hike around a swamp which was nothing special, so sat for a bit on a rock overlooking the lake and empty beach... travelling after Labour Day is sooo nice as the crowds disappear and calmness returns. 😍 There was a whole flock of larger brown birds walking around, which looked a bit like grouse but those tend to stay in the trees, so at the visitor centre they told me they were partridges!

After Quetico, it was another 3-hour drive to my motel in Nipigon, and adding the final hour of time difference made the day go by fast! In total, I've had eleven time-changes during this trip (+1-1+1+0.5 from Ontario via New Brunswick & Quebec to Labrador, -1.5 back to Quebec, then -1-1-1 to BC, and finally +1+1+1 to Ontario), all in the same country! 😄

Just before getting to Nipigon, I had a quick stop at the Red Rock marina, where the view of steep hills was pretty enough, but the redness of the rock was masked by vegetation 😅. The scenery in this area is very pretty though, and the next day I really enjoyed the drive out of town - there's not many rest places along the highway to take pics from but hopefully you get the jest!

I had wanted to revisit Neys provincial park to hike up a hill to an overlook of a famous Lawren Harris painting of Pic Island, but I had been slow to leave in the morning, first sorting out things online and then waiting for my car to get an oil service. So instead, I repeated a small hike to a rocky point with a stunning view of the lake and sat there (in my coat & headband for the wind) for a while, chatting with a few friends online.

All through Canada some of my best cell phone reception was either on top of a hill or on a rocky outcrop (basically anywhere without trees) so I often would sit there to read email, research things online and chat with friends & family. 😂 It hadn't really bothered me to have poor/no reception for most of the time (sometimes for days on end), but now I was going home there was a lot to sort out, so it became more frustrating.

Staying that night in an airbnb without kitchen, I prepped a salad on the beach's picknick table, and then made my way over to Marathon for some cozy streaming of the Amazing Race while lying in bed 😊, a definite advantage of staying in a building rather than a tent! In the morning, I quickly checked out Marathon's Jellicoe Cove, which is undoubtedly a great place to be on the water in high summer.

Just south of Marathon, I also revisited Pukaskwa national park, which was as stunning as on the way up. It was much greyer now though, so check out the pics from my previous post to truly appreciate its beauty. I redid the Southern Headland Trail and then added the Manito Mikana trail which I hadn't had time for previously... the little islands, the vast water expanse, the beach... all pretty and with starting fall colour changes! 😍

Temperatures were less fun; 4 degrees in the morning and only warming up to 8-12 degrees in the afternoon, so after a cold day, I got myself in Wawa a chicken noodle soup & yam fries to warm me up! Arriving early at my cabin, the same where I had stayed years ago on a Thanksgiving trip up here, I cranked up the heat and snuggled in front of the tv. 😊

Next day, I hiked the Nokomis trail in the northern part of the Lake Superior provincial park, which has stunning views of the surrounding forest and of Old Woman Bay...which I had a harder time to see as I was stung by two wasps on the way up! 😫 Stopping to take off my sweater, they suddenly stung me on the arm and eyebrow before I even realized what happened. I picked up my stuff and ran away 😅. Not surprisingly, my entire eye got swollen so once I was back down, I took some rest on the beach before hitting the road again. Au, it hurt!! 😮

Driving went ok but it was very tiring, so I had another break at the lovely beach of Pancake Bay provincial park to eat something and soak up the sun with my eyes closed. I was surprised that Lake Superior has such large sandy beaches as most of the shoreline consists of Canadian Shield rocks... they are a bit out of the way for city folks from Toronto 😉 but great places for locals from Sault Ste Marie!

In that town, I spent some time getting ready for the next phase of leaving Canada; I washed my car so that it's a little more presentable 😅 (got also a deep-clean booked to get rid of all the sand) and spent my remaining gift cards and Shoppers points... don't want to lose any freebees! 😄

Checking in at the motel in Thessalon, I was relieved to be able to sit and not get up for a while... If we all could see such a sunset each day, the world would be a more peaceful place! 😍🥰

Harmony in families usually has a few sour notes, this is more commonly observed during a cross country holiday. Picture it, it's 1970,some

people are in a boat travelling along the trans Canada, 2 are in the back, 4 are in the front. Well three and a half in the front, a small person is kind of sprawled across a young couple , a middle aged gentleman is behind the wheel. The small person is in the front because the people in the back need some room to spread out . Small people don't realise how heavy they get ,when spread across grownups ' knees, their chubby little elbows dig into bellies and if they are whirling dervishes as they sleep , the unsuspecting grownups get out of the boat car with mysterious bruises and scrapes.

To the wee person , she is the centre of universe and the world is built for them. So to get a chance to sit in the front of the car, was a treat.

From the west of the country, until they pulled out of Winnipeg, that's when the trouble began.Up for debate was whether they would go through the north into Nova Scotia or follow the road south. The young man suggested they go south, the father insisted they go north. Looking back on it, the little girl could careless which road they but it seemed to her they took both.

Contentedly she looked out of the window and watched the road go by. Rocks and trees ,rocks and trees, ...oh...more rocks and trees...still more rocks and trees. Not a bear or moose broke the monotony, just rocks, ...trees...

She asked about the moose and the bears, her big sister replies that they were taken by the black flies and mosquitoes. Everybody seems a little cranky and tired, there is present in the car, an enormous thunder cloud.The small person is now being held by her mother. Her bigger sister at one point was crying and her father had slammed the door, the dash appeared to be shaking.It might have been at that point , the little person puked , the nervous young man who had been sitting in the middle of thunder cloud #1(the father) and torrent # 2 (the bigger sister) ,was good to catch the debris. It wasn't like they hadn't been forewarned , a voice from the back called out to them that said little person was going to blow ,not once but many times,but thunder cloud and torrent were still arguing about whether to go through the north or down towards south. Oddly when the family was finally stopped , they appeared to go south anyway. The boat car had stopped in an area that was flat and green . Somewhere before they stopped they passed some big castle like buildings , and more leafy fields. When they stopped to get out , there had been more door slamming and the little person remembers changing behind some towels and blankets out of her pukey clothes , by the side of the road. While the torrent and her sweet, quiet, but covered ,young husband, went into the gas station restrooms to change . The torrent got caught in the crossfire , like her husband of the unwell child' s puking.( It had not been a very good day.)

She got out of the front seat and got into the back seat with the other big sister. The mother quietly sorted the little person out and got into the front seat beside the young man and her husband .A neat and tidy little girl went back to riding in the rear beside her sisters. Now which one to crawl beside the torrent still glaring at their father,or the one that told her about the black flies and mosquitoes carrying off the moose and the bears. She opted to climb in beside the sister who told her about the flies and mosquitoes. Best to keep her distance from the torrent, at least until Quebec.

Quebec! At the border, of' la belle provence', stood the biggest snow man , she had ever seen. It was two stories high and looked down at her with great buttoned eyes. Things were looking...up.

Day 42 July 12 Winnipeg - Cedar Creek 132kms

Yesterday was another enjoyable rest day. My apartment was awesome and right in the city. I went out walking in the morning….it’s a city. It seems to have a lot of car parks on the east side where I was staying. The bicycle infrastructure is excellent so I’m surprised a lot more people don’t take advantage of it, especially since Winnipeg is flat. There were cyclist, but not as many as you would expect.

I did see this interesting structure

it’s the human rights museum. Hmmm, not really my thing. I was keen to see the famous Forks Markets. It didn’t open until 10am so I did a big walking loop back to it and ended up there right at 10.

They’re not really markets. Just a lot of food places downstairs and overpriced souvenir shops upstairs. The best feature was this outdoor area by the river where I was able to take my coffee and cinnamon bun and relax for a while, reading my kindle.

Today I was packed and ready early. I had to get out of the city before hitting the highway. I navigated it perfectly, helped by the fact that I’d been out that way, over the river the day before to go to the supermarket.

There was almost 10kms of dealing with lights and traffic before the Trans Canada Highway 1.

It has a good shoulder and it’s very flat. The wind was coming from the side today but it’s wasn’t too strong. As the day went on and the road veered to the north my speed would increase noticeably each time I caught the wind.

I knew there wouldn’t be anywhere for a break for a while but I did see a couple of interesting things. First this

it’s the centre of Canada! Not the centre of my ride however, as I started way back in Anchorage which is a lot further west. I also had to go north up to Tok before heading south again. I’m also not going all the way across. I should be done in 20 days. 😁

Next I came upon this lady walking

She didn’t hear my bell ringing as I came up behind her so I got a face full of flag. This is Glenda who is walking with her family to Ottawa to call on the Federal Government to launch an inquiry in missing, murdered and neglected indigenous men and boys. They had a support car just ahead and were taking turns to walk.

I didn’t think it was worth diverting into Ste.Anne’s so I had gone almost 60kms before reaching Richer. There was a very nice looking place selling local produce with a cafe at the side….which was shut. The owner was a very cranky man who just snarled when I asked about coffee. Yes, Shirley had knocked over one of the metal chairs out the front when I was parking her, but I did pick it up. We moved on to the Subway/Service Station. So it was coffee and Subway cookies again for my break. At least they have tables and chairs and are friendly.

A map check revealed a restaurant called Sophie’s about 40kms up the road and 1km to the north. The next 40kms were pretty easy as I was catching the wind a lot. This restaurant was the only thing in a town called Hadashville but it was worth the diversion. It was run by Ukrainians who were doing all the baking. It smelled fantastic!

Only 33kms to go and it seemed to pass quickly. The Highway is split in a lot of places and you can’t see the other side. I knew I would have to take one of the little roads which joined both sides, then double back to my motel. Yep! I picked it perfectly.

This is not a town. It’s just a RV park and motel. It’s a little overpriced but I’m glad it’s here because it’s another 80kms to the next town.

Looks like a shorter day tomorrow!
