VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION:

If Gene had a Pokémon nature & characteristic, what would it be? Asking for fun art reasons...

I was sitting on this ask for a while because I wasn't sure whether to judge his actual characteristics or his actual stats/likes/dislikes.

Like, he doesn't exactly have great Defense or HP or Attack, and his Speed is mid. He could be Adamant, but then his Special Attack (which throwing balms/Pokeballs could count as) would be low, or he could be Brave or maybe Modest, but he likes Sweet and Spicy foods. His characteristic could be Strong willed, but he famously doesn't have great defenses.

(What classification IS he, anyways? A glass cannon, maybe? In Miitopia he's a mage and he'd be a Pawmi in any new PMD, definitely a ranged attacker at the very least. And considering how often he's dealing with Lysandre, his Special Attack should be high, I think.)

I was leaning towards Adamant with the characteristic Often lost in thought, but that doesn't make sense since his Sp.A. would be down 10% but also still somehow be the highest stat he has.

Final answer: Hardy + Often lost in thought, OR if we're going for more interesting stats, Modest + Often lost in thought.

So... I may have had a lil bit of a crisis today...

I've wanted to teach myself how to animate ever since I was a kid, and since I'm unable to work because of serious physical and psycological health issues, I thought now was gonna be the perfect time.

It took me almost a month to write the script for my first animated youtube video and create the storyboard for the animation as well as the thumbnail, and it took me two days of recording and mixing the audio before I was ready to animate in Krita-- cuz that was my only option.

I spent several hours being confused and frustrated with the buttons before I finally made progress and made maybe around 30 seconds of (sketchy) animation...

Then it crashed.

And again.

It kept crashing every time I tried to draw a single line.

Upset by the fact that hours of hard work were for nothing, I tried to get adobe animate, which was unsuccessful thanks to their software being impossible to even download now.

So my only option that won't crash is clip studio paint ex.

I have pro-- which means I can only create 1 second long animations.

To upgrade, it's like £150. WAY too much for me to be able to afford within at least the next year.

Luckily, my birthday is in like 2 weeks, but I have very little faith that my family will even get me anything this year, let alone send me money so I can chase a dream.

So I have a Ko-Fi goal, and there's no pressure to help, but regardless of whether or not I get phenomenally lucky enough to recieve the money for it for my birthday, anyone who decides to donate will be credited in every video I make for AT LEAST the remainder of 2024 because I can't imagine me being able to afford this without help for the forseeable future.

I know I've said a million times before but I absolutely love your artstyle. I've never been the biggest dan of my own art cuz it's always been way too complicated and really difficult to just doodle characters and stuff-- but yours is always so consistent in comparison (not that I'm saying I'm bad at art I just struggle to draw using the same techniques I used to)

I wondered if you had any anatomy tips for characters? Like do you break down characters into shapes to get their proportions vaguely correct while sketching? If you do I very much want to know what shapes you use because I've not been able to draw a single full body character in quite a while cuz I can't get their proportions the way I want 😅

uhhhh I guess I do the general blocky thing that most people do?

(like I'd emphasize the vague in "vaguely correct" here because every other day I stumble on a new amazing art tutorial on how to simplify all 900 back muscles into a perfect shape and it's like oh wow I have Not been doing that and I probably still won't remember now)

BUT for me it's all about the Vibes

so when I'm really trying it usually either ends up being an amalgam of some tips that I try to remember + the shapes I've seen the most in tutorials since the early internet KFJHSDJKF

but like a lot of the time I just do something super simple and then I have to figure it out later on a second sketch layer so it's all kind of a mess BUT that's the general shapes at least!!

Thought I'd post a little (or not so little- oops sorry) info dump of my boy Lux for an OC Sunday since I've made some slight changes to his personality...

So here's some little facts about Luckless (I'd say the trio but I'm still working on the other two)

1) For no apparent reason, he can mimic almost any sound or tone as long as it's made by an organic lifeform (Pokémon cries, whistling, etc)

2) He can feel the emotions of the living beings around him, which is one of the reasons he seems so anxious and overwhelmed the majority of the time- it's cuz he is. Just because he can feel these emotions, though, it doesn't mean he understands them (my poor boi has no idea what's going on)

3) I've spoken about his pain tolerance before, but I've kinda changed it a little. Rather than not feeling as much pain as "normal" human beings, he's just more likely to not notice any wounds or illness thanks to his COMPLETE lack of self-awareness in terms of his physical health. Plus, if he does somehow manage to notice something's wrong with him before it becomes a massive problem, he instinctually hides it from others and tries to convince himself he's fine (he's not aware of why he does this either) He also often forgets that he's a human being that requires food and sleep which leads to all sorts of problems 😅

4) He easily gets scared by sudden movements, flashes of light and loud sounds. (Thunderstorms are a nightmare for him, as well as the other two that have to comfort him)

5) His opinions on other humans is a little complicated. He's quick to trust in general, but he's the kinda guy to immediately (and poorly) prepare himself for betrayal, so he's constantly overthinking what to share and what not to. Plus, he will do anything, and I mean ANYTHING, to avoid conflict with other people. (The main reason he apologises for everything)

6) A verrry strong believer in found family, since he doesn't have any biological relatives- as far as he's aware- so he quickly grows attatched to anyone with a kind and protective nature. (He very much sees the Professor and Cyllene as his parents but would be way to shy to admit it)

7) He's called "Luckless" for a reason. He's clumsy, reckless, and he gets sick VERY easily. Sometimes, if someone nearby is feeling intense enough emotions, it affects Lux's physical health. The whole reason behind his awful luck is because Arceus thought it'd be entertaining to watch (Hiro and Yuki are ready to fight God smh)

I am so sorry- this ended up being WAY longer than I thought 😥

OH OH for #1 I hope he and Iscan can bond over that!! since in the concept art iscan is really good at imitating pokemon cries!! AH but their anxiety might feed each other unintentionally under the wrong circumstances since lux can sense them 😭😭😭

So I finally made a ref sheet for my own Gene-inspired Pokémon OC, Luckless Protagonist...

I wondered if it would be okay to draw him and Fuyuki (the one that looks a bit like Guzma) with Gene at some point?

I also keep wondering what would happen if Gene and Lux actually met (in hisui) since he'd be the only character (besides Akari and Rei) who's actually shorter than your boi

(Lux thinks Gene is really cool but is too shy to actually say it so he's just a ball of anxiety lmao)

OH make sure you stretch!! I do the same thing but it helps to have a set of stretches that you automatically do anytime you do X task (for me it's arm circles when I go in the kitchen, though I need to get back into the habit jshfksjdfh)

Have you got any tips for planning out plot points and comic pages?

Like I have a vague idea of what I want to happen and how but translating those ideas into actial page drafts is almost impossible

but seriously, it's SO weird to do a comic because I'll have like one important scene drawn 5 different times and then everything else will just sort of happen with or without my approval

working on the kleavor fight, yeah?? I know how it starts, and I know how it ends

and then this stuff in the middle just sort of happens and I can try to force my brain to think about what goes on in a scene but no matter what it just has to happen a specific way even if I actively plan for something else and it's like what is going on here

-but do you have like a colour palette ref for Gene? I'm colourblind and cannot "eyeball" character colours correctly for the life of me and I don't wanna do my fave protag dirty

Throwing my two cents on the discord thing I would not recommend, I've been through this scenario before, buncha ocs inspired by others in said others inbox, they made a discord for everyone and I quickly got overwhelmed and barely showed up, they got overwhelmed running it and it got very cluttered and confusing, it ended up getting deleted because it was just too much for the people who made it and were running it

yeah, I have some friends online and IRL who run servers (like elbdot) but I think they have mods and also like.... anytime I've joined servers in the past I've ended up just sort of muting them and eventually just leaving since it's an entirely different atmosphere -- I think running one would burn out my social battery almost instantly 😭

plus, I really like reading everyone's stuff and being able to respond and seeing folks bounce ideas around!! (and discord definitely wouldn't be as organized either! having everything here lets me go back to specific tags if I need a refresher on which hero is which) 😭😭😭
