Guysssss I had the longest and best day everrr 😭 This got sooo long (sleep deprivation YAYYY) so it's under a cut now. Ye be warned

This morning my 10am lecture got out super early so I wandered around a bit and then went to office hours for my ecology prof and she helped me figure out my sources for my final paper, and then we yapped for like an hour :] She had me help her come up w curriculum ideas for her summer class and then we talked about the best japanese restaurants around town and also she gave me a recommendation for a good thai place.... then I went to a bio seminar about archaea in the nitrogen cycle which was REALLY interesting (& I'm not usually into microbio!!!! it was soooo good)

And THEN I was walkin across campus and I noticed a water oak which I needed a new sample of for ecology lab so I was cuttin myself some leafs and then I turned around saw one of my besties STARIN ME DOWN.... which was very funny bc just the other day I was tellin him about how I sometimes wonder what other people think when they see me stop in front of a tree and stare at its leaves for several minutes LOL he got to watch it firsthand...... and then I got to use the field guide he gave me last week to confirm it was the right tree and then we saw another friend and yapped and it was beautiful

And THENNNN I continued my journey to the music building where I met up with two of my friends and then we went to the gochey store to get stuff for the trans potluck I've been planning for the last few weeks.... It was cold in thar so I let one of my friends borrow my flannel #BUTCH WIN and I bought some lunch YIPPEE and then we went back to campus to set up for the potluck and I made signs and they turned out SO CUTE

And then we actually HAD the potluck and the turnout was really nice (20 people I think!) and I got a little emotional and we made a thank you card for the building director for letting us host it in the fine arts building cause he's the sweetest most supportive man ever WAUGH. The food was really good too and one of my friends took some of our leftovers to food not bombs downtown ^_^ <333

And then I went to a BASEBALL GAMEEEE with my school jazz band and it was so so fun and everything was SO overpriced but I got bavarian nuts and the friend who drove me there bought me dippin dots and I bought us both pins of the team mascot cause she collects pins on her work apron so now we're pin twinsss... and I got to joke around a bunch with two of the guys from the rhythm section who are both so cool and fun but I never get to hang out with so it was GREAT. And then we WON THE GAMEEEEEE and then my friend and I almost got horribly lost on the way home (wound up goin the wrong way on a one way street in the dark. Oopsie!) but we SURVIVED and we got to gossip a lil and I got to infodump about longleaf pines :]

And now I'm SO SO TIRED like physically to the point where I can barely walk #oops and will likely be bedridden tomorrow #whoops but it was WORTH IT because today was so beautiful and I love everyone in the world 😭 GOODNIGHT BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS AND HANDSOME STRANGERS MWAH

backstory !

was raised in a traveling commune, which bounced between state parks and forests. all intense survivalists but also...not, like obvs can’t have sustained agriculture traveling from park to park, so the group’s leaders would often detour alone to pick up supplies every now and then. 

but a horrible place to grow up, not that he knew that ‘cos it’s the only life he’s ever known. was just a pretty violent / toxic atmosphere with a hyper survival of the fittest mentality, a lot of sparring that would go too far, not nearly enough resources for the weather conditions, or anyone with actual medical training for when anyone got sick or injured - all under the guise of self sufficiency.  

also very poorly homeschooled, chase barely knows how to read, and stories/info was often read to them or recited by memory. 

at eighteen he’s given more responsibility, gets to go on supply runs. goes to like, cvs, for the first time. hates it FJHG, really just has no desire to explore more of the world even though he knows for sure it’s out there now. his ‘family’ are thrilled about this - knowing they basically have him for life.

trains and mentors the younger members, unwittingly encourages violence, sort of pushing them to their limits because for the group it’s less about winning and more about being able to survive - endurance and being able to endure is so wrapped up in reverence which he mistakes for love. 

when he’s twenty the whole commune gets busted, apparently they had been secretly under investigation for a while. his parents were in the commune too but never make that distinction known so the cops tell him and he’s like ok and ? just like, doesn’t know that that’s meant to mean anything.

goes to jail directly to jail does not pass go ... takes a bit to go to trial, but he ends up serving two years. and that’s what you missed on glee ! currently living with his grandparents at lilac ridge, which is weird. they feel very much like strangers. also on parole still, f in the chat.

personality !

hates it here, feels like shit just wants to go vibe in the woods again. is a lot more quiet than he used to be, truly flopping like a fish out of water.

always saying the wrong thing then getting frustrated at himself bc humiliating ! and if no one respects him, ‘cos he knows nothing about anything anymore then how can anyone ever love him ! this thought depresses him - finds it super hard to make friends ! doesn’t understand any pop culture references.

can be a bit rude, a wee bit hostile, physically aggressive, immature. just doesn’t think before he speaks smh. won’t admit when he’s wrong either will just be like, ya that’s what i meant. 

competitive as heck ! catch him trying to out chin-up the person next to him at the outdoor gym down at the beach. loves games too, but not like board games, think he’s only ever played cards anyways ... but like, duck duck goose. 

for all the survivalist training, not even that street smart (and not book smart at all). like ya he can identify types of mushrooms and wipe his ass with a leaf in a pinch but i mean he doesn’t need to do that now rip.

SHIKAMARUUUU, my god...just, everything about their dynamic makes my heart melt, the way they’re both people who are easily dismissed by others and how they have such UNFALTERING FAITH in each other. chouji knows how much of a genius shikamaru is, knows very well the fact that despite his laziness, once he commits to something he’s in it for the LONG HAUL, the way shikamaru just believes so steadfastly in chouji, considering him stronger than NEJI FOR FUCKS SAKE...they like. get one another, the kind of relationship where you can be yakking away one minute and then just sitting in contented silence the next. they can just laze around. maybe play video games and snack. and sometimes...kiss. and it’s so chill even with that latent tenderness their later relationship develops and they both just feel so safe and KNOWN and familiar like. love your best friend. anyway everyone slept on shikacho and y’all should be ashamed the naruto fandom is enormous and finding pretty much ANY content for it is almost impossible aside from the small (if lovely and amazing) tag and i’m pretty hyperfixated on it if you couldn’t tell holy SHIT.  A BROTP I have with said character: i’m really not a fan of ino taking potshots at him for his weight and outright shaming him, but once she grows out of that i absolutely love their friendship. listen, you know that post thats like--hold on

A NOTP I have with said character: i have nothing against karui but canon is fucking dead to me and my opinions on p much all the “endgame” ships range from utterly neutral to absolute loathing. their relationship is on neither end of the spectrum, but. eh. definitely not into it. A random headcanon: he keeps nursing injured animals back to health because he’s just that fucking sweet and bringing them back to his house to keep them warm and safe while they recover and his team knows vaguely about this and ino and shikamaru like to poke fun at him for it but since they don’t tend to encounter said animals, it’s not really a huge deal.

of course they stop by his house one day bc he hadn’t shown up for training which is annoying and frankly a little concerning and finding the house mostly empty ino just bursts on into chouji’s room only to immediately have the opossum he’s been caring for latch its little paws on her face and cling.

it’s a bad morning. General Opinion over said character: literally one of my absolute favorites of all time and it really breaks my heart how overlooked he is in the fandom (seriously y’all...). i think kishimoto is kind of a stupid hack and the Fat Jokes are really grating and it sucks to see that so intrinsically tied to his character (like. just let him be fat. jesus christ) but his kindness and overall relaxed, loyal and lovable nature has me just melting. i adore him. 

Shikamaru

Sexuality Headcanon: He’s gay, scoob. (I could also talk a lot about how his earlier misogyny is both a product of being a whiny tween and also some internalized frustration of like WHATS SO GREAT ABOUT GIRLS. UGH. I DONT. STOP TELLING ME IM GONNA FALL IN LOVE WITH ONE ONE DAY DAD JESUS. and let’s be real, thats frustrating, even if it aint an excuse)  Gender Headcanon: he uses he/him pronouns because it’s just what he’s used to and comfortable with but man gender is such a drag... A ship I have with said character: SEE ABOVE SHIKACHO RANT A BROTP I have with said character: naruto! he and naruto have a really adorable friendship and i love love LOVE that he and chouji were shown to be kind and accepting of him even when most people were shunning him. also he’s so fucking dumb i love seeing shikamaru meticulously plan out something only to have naruto shriek into battle and ruin all of it. love those guys. stupid bros.  A NOTP I have with said character: ok. im sorry i just. loathe sh*katema i really do. i haaaate the way kishimoto writes this whole “ew a GIRL” “ew a MAN” vibe with the like OOOH BUT THEYRE GONNA LIKE EACH OTHER vibe like.

but they’re also both gay and kishimoto can suck my nuts byeeee A random headcanon: sometimes pakkun just fucking Shows up and chills with him. shikamaru wants absolutely no part of this but is way too lazy to like. do anything about it so it’s just this guy and a dog sitting in a field chillin and occasionally him piping up like ‘hey kid. remember when i bit your hand? yeah? haha, man time sure does fly.” while shikamaru is just. go aWAY.   General Opinion over said character: if you told 9 year old me watching naruto for the first time my favs were gonna be a three way tie of lee, shikamaru and chouji i never would have fucking believed you but here we are. i love him. i absolutely love him. he’s such a whiny bastard and a really good depiction of burnout genius who doesnt want to do ANYTHING, but his intellect is an absolute DELIGHT to watch. i love him very much.

Sexuality Headcanon: he’s pan!! this is a boy that crushes easily and crushes hard on just about anyone!!!! Gender Headcanon: cis male A ship I have with said character: ok i ship him a lot with neji actually? what with how neji grows during the course of the series to regard lee with the respect he deserves is really sweet and there’s just something so infinitely adorable about him going around being the hammiest, most ridiculously earnest, kind and enthusiastic person and neji, now that he isn’t constantly bitter and angry at the world can finally really see that? lee is always happily dropkicking his way into his life, like he wouldn’t have it any other way, and i think that’s just...so sweet A BROTP I have with said character: SAKURAAAAA. oh my GOD do i adore their relationship. ever since lee saved her and basically just gave her a glimpse of his...lee-ness, the fact her negative opinion of him IMMEDIATELY flipped and gave her such a strong admiration and fondness for him kills me DEAD. she always treats him with so much respect and the fact she’s quick to rag on anyone making fun of him melts my HEART!! and on lee’s side, his little crush on her is adorable of course, but the sheer strength of the friendship that comes from it is more than infatuation could ever offer him. i want them to hang out together and talk about their troubles...i want them to make each other laugh and be so very kind to each other...i want sakura to storm over and throw him over her shoulder to TAKE A BREAK ALREADY when he’s been training too hard for too long. god. A NOTP I have with said character: honestly i’m pretty happy with a lot of lee ships! the only ones i view with obvious disdain are the ones with creepy age gaps honestly. A random headcanon: out of everyone in the leaf genin, he’s probably the closest anyone’s ever come to someone who EVERYONE is at least distantly friendly towards. like god have you SEEN how warm and inviting and concerned he is the SECOND he sees that naruto is feeling down? i get the sense he’s immediately inclined to provide that kind of support to any of his comrades, even the ones that Resist it.

you think sasuke is the most popular among the leaf genin? puh-LEASE. everyone looks on rock lee with at least a LITTLE bit of warmth. thats just fact. General Opinion over said character: since my first viewing of naruto he has been my Absolute fav, and while chouji and shikamaru are veeery close to stealing that spot, one look at him and i feel he’s gonna be on top forever. probably the best written character kishimoto’s ever produced that’s remained in  the main cast (tho i dont speak for shipudden onwards who fucking knows, but the truth of it is is i adore rock lee)

Gaara

Sexuality Headcanon: Panromantic Asexual Gender Headcanon: kind of like shikamaru, i feel like he uses he/him pronouns but also doesn’t particularly....Care? A ship I have with said character: ok so it wasnt until my naruto rewatch that i really started falling into this but i think him and naruto are super cute? while i loathe kishimoto for ruining so much abt this show he really is good at creating good foils to naruto, and gaara is no exception--and the way naruto changes his life by just kicking his ass (and proving he’s not just a Simp or smth) and then just, extending genuine empathy and a REAL sense of truly relating to where he’s coming from re:his upbringing? the EFFECT it has on him, bro!!!! my god!!! i feel like they’re that opposites attract ship that don’t clash constantly but instead fall into this adorable synergy and understanding? and i think thats so sweet A BROTP I have with said character: ...is it cheating to just put temari and kankuro here? bc they are literally his siblings but my GOD do i love their relationship. there’s something so deeply sad about their initial situation??? like having siblings that either are deeply fucking afraid of you or clearly don’t care for your well being whatsoever, it’s such a tragic scenario, and the times where they really do show legitimate care for gaara just breaks my heart...but the GROWTH. THE DEVELOPMENT. Sexuality Headcanon: Bisexual Gender Headcanon: cis woman A ship I have with said character: listen. i think kibahina is........Really Really cute. he cares about her so MUCH??? and there’s a certain tenderness to his interactions with her that’s just really evident whenever you see em together? i really love that you get the sense hinata is COMFORTABLE around him!!! like! i feel like hinata really deserves to have a partner who sees her when she ISN’T blushing and stammering? when she’s like? legitimately comfortable and being HERSELF? (dgmw the blushing is adorable i fucking love her but its one of the gripes i have with naruhina that so much of it is just naruto being oblivious and her having a small panic attack) the comfort she and kiba have make for a chill, adorable relationship i just cry over constantly A BROTP I have with said character: so i was GONNA put naruto here, but technically i already put him there for shikamaru’s so i’m gonna say neji!!! uhhh OBVIOUSLY they got off to a. very rough start but the way their dynamic changed (or perhaps in a way reverted back to the times they interacted before neji’s father died and temporarily killed his Human Decency) into this respect and fondness that’s just...such a delight to watch? i’m a SUCKER for slow and mutual reconciliation and there are just so many sweet moments between them. they are FAMILY, BRO!!! THEY CARE FOR EACH OTHER, BRO!!!!!!!!!! A NOTP I have with said character: ...at the risk of sounding like a broken record, i think a lot of hinata ships are quite cute? i guess i’m gonna have to say sasuke. because like.

A random headcanon: she is a LOT physically stronger than she looks!! a lot of her combat techniques rely on taijustu after all so it’d make sense that she puts a lot of effort into physical training alongside chakra control.

General Opinion over said character: i LOVE her??? honest to god i really really do--honestly while i dislike the direction they went in canon with her, i really loved seeing her be motivated to grow and change the parts of herself she hated to become a stronger person.

1. Fictional universe you’d like to move to for one day?

- I wanna say One Piece bc that really sounds like fun...but my luck I’d be placed in some village that’s being oppressed by a tyrant or some shit and I’d be miserable lmao. But maybe Luffy and co would come save us and I could befriend them?? Just being able to meet One Piece characters would be cool to me. Other than One Piece, maybe Naruto??? Ninjas are hella cool and the Leaf Village seems like a very comfy and homey place to live. Or having quirks in a My Hero Academia world... Idk I’m only thinking of animes rn for some reason lol this is a tough question!

2. Favorite book/comic book/manga/etc.?

- Oooh, book is tough because I actually don’t read as much as I’d like...The Twilight series will always hold a special place in my heart. Gone Girl is also really good! For manga, that’s easy - One Piece, simply because I’ve yet to read any other manga lol

- I think nebulae are really cool! Even the word is neat-sounding. They’re so pretty and the idea of a star nursery just sounds so ethereal! 🌌

3. Where would your dream home be located?

- I always go back and forth between wanting to live in a suburb type place, just so my future children could have other kids in the neighborhood to grow up and play with and I like the idea of neighbors and get togethers, but I also love the idea of living somewhere more distant. Pushed off from the busy streets and in the woods maybe? Either way, I’d also love to live close to the water! Whether that be a lake or beach or river. A house on the lake would be nice but...no teacher makes enough money for that 🤪

- I don’t have any and I would love to get one some day! I’m just so indecisive so it’ll probably never happen lmao. Not to mention a visible tattoo could potentially threaten my occupation. 🙃

5. What’s an achievement you’re really proud of?

- Graduating college and becoming a teacher! I’m the first college graduate in my family, so it’s really exciting. I hope I’ve set a good example for my younger siblings!

- This is tough because I’m very critical of myself and tend to think I’m not very good at anything lmao I’ll say organization? I’m pretty skilled at having things set up nice, neat, and easily accessible. Totally lame, but that’s all I got lol

- Got my first ever teaching job!!!!!

Love for OAK part 10

Chapter 10 of OAK- where do I begin.

The start of the scene was unexpected, we got to see a pretty different side of JK. So far, he plays the part of a trusted partner and an amazing friend, someone who sticks by y/n’s side and knows her secrets even when not even Tae does. It really shows the strength of their trust in each other…which is why this scene gives so much more depth to his character. I could resonate with the fear that y/n feels when she sees the disappointment and passive aggressiveness he shows quietly. He’s never been quiet until now, always sticking up for OC and being there for her. On top of all that, he voices the one thing that OC was probably the most scared to hear-“Just– why do you keep pushing everyone away?”, “Do you wanna be alone forever or something? Is that it?” - basically the opposite of what she’s risking her life for. I personally loved this scene where the tension between the two was so tangible and painful ( I swear I’m no masochist), even though it was quickly resolved.

While I did have my own doubts about whether y/n was still loyal ( at least a little bit) to the mafia, the last part completely destroyed it. – Yoongi flashes in front of your eyes again and your fingers start to fidget, you feel jittery and restless. You have to try. Whatever her reasons were in the past for committing those horrible deeds, you can tell she’s reconciled, that her morality is above that. It’s nice to think that people can change for the better and I hope OC is one such character.

This chapter clearly showed the position OC has got herself stuck in, a double crosser in a super dangerous mafia who works for their natural enemy, the police. It’s like she’s part of both but neither, essentially stranded alone in between with no one to really lean on. She knows she has to do it alone and succeed while she’s at it. But her decision to turn over a new leaf is probably at conflict with her renewed position as a member of devil’s scouts. For whatever reason, I was reminded of the prologue where she tries to flee from her past to start anew somewhere else. But it seems like she’s stuck in this mess for life…poor OC has the worst luck.

I hope you had as much fun writing this part as much as I did reading it. I like a lot of things about the story, the moral dilemmas, the action, the tension between characters. I also really hope things turn okay between her and tae, I’d hate for him to lose faith in her, it might just break OC. Rooting for the two of them💜💜💜💜. But judging from the way things are going and also the fact that your writing crushes my soul every other sentence or so, I expect angst piled upon angst.

On another note, I hope uni will be kind to you and that this message can be a small happy pill for you. As much as I anticipate the rest of OAK, I wouldn’t want you to prioritise that over your health and academics.

Growing up with Dylan Larkin meant two things specifically. One, his parents basically thought you hung the moon, dealing with their son on an everyday, almost twenty-four-seven basis. Two, you always managed to secure yourself an invite to the best possible USA hockey parties, and thankfully, those parties were always littered with free booze, free food and very very good looking boys.

“So, what are we gonna do tonight (Y/N)?” Dylan looked over at you, a sarcastic look evident in his eyes. “We’re gonna drink all the booze we can find and flirt with the cutest guys. Then we’re going to embarrass Jack about how much he loves McDav-”

“Or we’re gonna take you home and then you can see the party from Snapchat?”

You loved the kid like a brother, but Dylan Larkin was the epitome of a party pooper. D-boss himself always found a way to put a damper on your fun, especially when it came to your terrorizing of the Sabres player.

“Also, there’s gonna be a bunch of new kids there tonight, some you haven’t met, so don’t offend anyone.” Turning another corner, the cooler in the back making a loud bang as the alcohol inside rolled around. “Like?”

“Um, Matthews, McAvoy, Werenski, a few others I think.”

“Werenski’s the one that finished the season with the cute little purple bruise on his eye right?” You could almost remember the game vividly, the American teen taking a puck off the face from Phil Kessel had everyone around you scrunching up in sympathetic pain.

Raising an eyebrow at you, Dylan nodded his head, “Yeah… the little purple bruise.”

Pulling up outside a house, the two of you looked at your surroundings. There were a few cars, not that many, and it didn’t look like a lot of people had arrived yet. “Pretty dead for a 4th of July party, Larks.”

“Boys told me to come early, said if I wanted a parking spot it’d be the best option. Also said they wanted you there early so they could get early dibs.”

“Oh fuck you, Dylan.”

It didn’t take long for the place to fill up. Plenty of familiar and unfamiliar faces were sat all around you. You were basically glued to Dylan’s side, though, due to his ‘worry’ that you would end up terrorizing someone and getting kicked out for being rude.

“I literally just wanna tell Jack his hair looks extra ugly and Philadelphia-like today.”

“And I literally just want you to not do that so we both don’t get kicked out for offending the actual host of the party.”

Just as you were about to retort, a few semi-familiar faces appeared in front of the two of you. You had met Auston a few times, the Leafs player often frequented these parties, and you were pretty sure you recognized the guy beside him and your thoughts were confirmed when Dylan screeched his name into your ear.

“Werenski! Look at that ugly mug. Plastic surgery in the future to fix the beauty of a save you made?”

“Still better looking than you, D-boss.”

They did their bro-hug thing, while Auston turned towards you, a smirk on his face. “So who called dibs today, (Y/N)? Heard Hanifin may’ve gotten the first call.”

“I’ve actually decided to call dibs on Dylan over here, thought it’d be best if we just appeased our parents wishes and I popped out a few Larkin babies. I’m hoping for twins, right dear?” Dylan looked at you in mild disgust at the thought of procreating with you.

“Anyways, (Y/N), this is Zach. Zach, (Y/N).”

The man in questioned leaned forward to shake your hand, right as you moved in for a hug, leaving the two of you at an awkward stance. It took a beat before he opened his arms for an awkward hug. “It’s uh… nice to meet you, (Y/N). I’ve heard a lot of things.”

“Trashy things, I’m sure.”

The Blue Jacket looked embarrassed as he stumbled over his words, his two USA teammates looking on in mild amusement. “No I uh… just that you’re a cool chick and stuff.”

His stumbling of words and awkward demeanour made you internally swoon, he was seriously a cutie. Even if he couldn’t form full sentences in one try.

“Yo, I want you to meet a few more people.” Dylan tugged on your hand, as you gave an awkward wave to Auston and Zach while allowing your best friend to pull you away from the conversation.

“So Werenski’s a real cutie.”

Dylan shook his head, a silent laugh etched on his face, “You’d destroy the poor guy, but I think he thinks the same, man couldn’t even keep up one full sentence near ya. I’ve never seen him like that.”

“So, (Y/N), huh?”

Auston Matthews looked at the Jackets defensemen in confusion, “Yeah, what about her?”

“Are her and Larkin… like a thing?” He was seriously hoping the answer was an affirmative no, but the look on Auston’s face told him otherwise.

“No ones really sure. She never goes home with any of the guys here, and she only ever comes with Dylan and leaves with Dylan. Some people think they’re secretly a thing, others think she’s secretly fucking some baseball player from Las Vegas. No one knows. Don’t worry about it dude, she’ll never go for you anyways.”

He secretly glowered at the couple in question, as you threw your head back in laughter at something Dylan had said. He wasn’t allowed to be jealous, he had just met you for fuck sakes! It didn’t help that you looked gorgeous and your hair was perfect and the shorts you were wearing showed off all your curves and your long as fuck legs and he really needed to get over this before things got awkward.

“Your crush is glaring over at us.” Dylan stated, pressing the cold beer into your hand which you greedily accepted.

“My crush?”

“Zach.”

You turned in the direction Dylan was looking, only to make eye contact with the man. He quickly diverted his attention to something else, a small tint of rosy red going up his neck. “I think he likes you. Go talk to him.”

“He thinks y'all are a thing.” Auston stated from behind you, a small grin on his face. “And why does he think that?”

“Cause I told him that you’re basically a thing, fun to fuck with him sometimes.”

Silently shaking your head in laughter, you stood up and handed the beer back to Dylan, walking over to the empty seat beside Zach. “Is this seat taken?”

Looking up at you in shock, he awkwardly shook his head and gestured for you to take it.

“You look pretty lonely over here. Very grumpy an’ all. I know you got a puck to the eye a few months ago, but come on, smile a little.” You nudged him jokingly, pumping your fists internally when it did bring a smile to his face.

“Did the happy posse send you over here to make me look like I secretly don’t wanna kill Matts for dragging me here?” He questioned, a small tint in his eye that you couldn’t place.

“What, you don’t like these fun as fuck parties, hosted by our favourite ginger, Jack Eichel?”

Shrugging his shoulders, he looking around the room with a raised eyebrow, “There’s so many puck bunnies here, I think my bank accounts already draining. I hate the people he invites, sometimes. But seriously, did they send you over here?”

Immediately shaking your head, “Nah, couldn’t leave a cute guy like you to sit all by yourself. Especially with all these girls around, I wanted to be the first to call dibs, ya know? Girls gotta let her inner bunny out every now and then.”

Laughing at your own joke, Zach looked at you in confusion. “Dibs?”

“It’s a running joke between all of us. Every time I get invited to one of these parties, they always tell Larks to bring me early so whoever comes early can call dibs. This time, I get to be the one to call it.”

Nudging his side with a wink, you moved back into the cushions, getting yourself comfier. “Oh, so you and Larks… like… aren’t like… actually gonna have twins and stuff?”

A large bust of laughter burst from your throat. You tried to contain it as quickly as possible, which only had you gripping your sides in silent pain. “Oh my god, no! Ew, never! Dylan’s literally the brother I never wanted. Ew.”

You saw Zach let whatever chip was on his shoulder fall off, as his body let the tension roll off and a larger smile appear on his face. “Oh.”

“Why?”

“It’s just that I like thought you were super cute and um… I didn’t really wanna like um… make you uncomfortable and piss Larks off and uh… yeah.” He subconsciously scratched at his chin, an awkward grin plastered across his face.

“Oh my god, were you glaring because you were jealous?”

“No! I uh… I wasn’t glaring. My eye makes it look like I’m glaring but-”

“Your eyesight wasn’t fucked up dumbass, this is pathetic. Just tell her you think she’s hot and ask her to have twins with you instead. Or on a date. Both work. You’ll end up practicing for the twins after the date anyways.” The host of the party interrupted your conversation, his ginger hair clashing with his red and blue outfit, his outburst also attracting half the party to your conversation.

“Jack! Just who I’ve been wanting to see! Your hairs ugly, and it’s such a shame you couldn’t wait out in your draft year, you already lost to McDavid so you should’ve given the world some justice and let Philly take you so you could’ve matched their jerseys with that ugly mop of hair on your head, sweetie.”

Glowering at you, Jack ignored your words and raised an eyebrow at the man beside you. “Well, you gonna ask her out or not?”

“Yeah, ask her out Werenski!” Dylan yelled from the other side of the room, which induced the multiple repetitions from a bunch of other surrounding people.

Ignoring them, Zach gestured to the currently half-empty backyard. “Wanna go out back?”

Nodding your head, he stood up and lent his hand out for you to take to pull yourself up with. He followed closely behind you as you stepped around people to the back door, pulling the sliding glass open and holding it so he could come through too.

“For a Fourth of July party, shouldn’t everyone be outside?” You questioned, looking at the few people who were sitting at the edge of Jack’s pool.

“It’s Eichel, man’s probably trying to get his own damn party shut down. Man’s a freak.”

Nodding your head in silent agreement, you watched the couples in the backyard, “These couples are precious. They all have matching Fourth of July outfits and I love it.”

“I want matching Fourth of July outfits with you.”

You looked at Zach in shock, and he seemed shocked about what he said aloud, obviously it was supposed to be an internal statement.
