Hello~ Thanks for joining me for episode 3 of Don't Be Strangers, a podcast and social experiment for learning to create meaningful connections together via collaborative conversations! The way this works is that anyone of any background can apply to come on and chat with me about anything they want. The goal is to raise awareness of social isolation and to narrow the gap between all of us as humans. Today I have a very special guest because it's my one and only favorite little sister. I feel very fortunate that I have such a tight relationship with my sibling because I know it's not a universally shared experience. We recorded this podcast kind of spontaneously because we were having one of our usual conversations this morning, and I suddenly turned to her and said something along the lines of: "ok stop talking, we need to record this so it can go on my podcast."

And I think it's perfect because I got feedback from episode 1 that maybe I should have given more of an introduction of myself so this will be the ultimate introduction as my sister will lovingly roast me by describing 1. what a bad older sister I was as a child, 2. how our relationship developed and was strengthened with age and maturity, 3. a really thorough astrology breakdown of me, her, and my husband including a relationship analysis between all three of us (don't worry, she gives an 101 introductory crash course so the conversation shouldn't be too hard to follow even for an astrology newbie like me) and 4. her sharing some really entertaining and vivid dreams which will also paint a picture to you of what my mornings look like.

Quick notes here, 1. she does cuss maybe 2-3 times so just FYI if you have any sensitivity to that sort of thing and 2. we've been told that we have pretty similar voices so hopefully the conversation won't be too hard to follow....

Yes, I'm aware that I totally forgot to ask her the key question of, "how do you define a stranger and how does one transition from being one to not?" but I'm obviously extremely flawed, so I'm just going to forgive myself on this and keep moving forward. Maybe, if you enjoyed this episode enough, I can bring her back on and remember to ask her next time. Or better yet, I can do a little family reunion episode where I get both her and the hubs together.

De volgende stop was Divundu, waar de Popa watervallen zijn. De waterval stelt niets voor het is meer een stroomversnelling maar de tocht op de rivier Okavangu was een hoogtepunt met een prachtige zonsondergang en mooie foto’s van de mijlpaarden. De Rainbow River Lodge ligt op een hele  mooie locatie.

De volgende dag hebben we onze reis vervolgd naar het Etosha National Park. We overnachten in Tsumeb, in het Makalani hotel om vanuit hier de volgende dag het Etosha park te bezoeken. Het Makalani hotel had een mooi zwembad en gelukkig hebben we hier een uurtje kunnen doorbrengen.

Ondertussen was de andere chauffeur gearriveerd. Met hem achter het stuur zouden we de trip naar het Etosha park doen. Vroeg opstaan (4 uur) om de wilde dieren bij zonsopgang te kunnen spotten.

Na drie kwartier rijden merkte een pientere reiziger op dat we richting zonsopgang reden, dus naar het oosten terwijl het park toch eigenlijk in het westen lag. Bleek dat de chauffeur een verkeerde weg had genomen en dat we weer terug moesten naar Tsumeb! Weg mogelijkheid om de dieren te spotten bij zonsopgang!

Wij vonden het Etosha park mooier dan het Kruger park omdat hier minder bosschages waren en je dus een groter zichtveld had. Ook hier weer veel kuddes met impala’s, springbokken, kudu’s enzo gezien. Iets minder was het dat dit vanuit de touringcar gebeurde en niet vanuit een terreinwagen zodat de afstand tussen de dieren groter voelde.

We hebben overnacht in de Etotongwe Lodge in Outjo waar ’s avonds een plaatselijke groep voor ons een optreden verzorgd heeft met Afrikaanse dansen en gezang.

Swakopmund , kustplaats

De volgende dag stond er weer een lange rit (600 km) op het programma volgens het reisprogramma. Volgens google maps was het “maar” 435 kilometer dus we hebben de reisleiding een beetje geassisteerd in het kiezen van de route. Swakopmund ligt direct aan de kust van de Atlantische Oceaan en was ooit een Duitse kolonie en de belangrijkste haven voor immigranten vanuit Duitsland. Ook nu nog geldt de plaats als meest Duitse stad van Namibië. Volgend de reisleiding was er geen restaurant in de buurt van het Atlantic Villa Guest House maar volgens alweer google maps wel. Ook hier waren we dus beter geïnformeerd dan de reisleiding. We hadden een prachtig penthouse toegewezen gekregen met een fraai uitzicht en veel kamers. Lekker kunnen bridgen met Sjef en Marjan en de volgende dag hadden we vrij. De stad bezocht, T-shirt voor Jaione gekocht en het kristal museum bekeken. Ook geocache gevonden, dus nu vier caches in vier Afrikaanse landen aan de lijst toegevoegd.

De dag daarop via een bezoek aan de Sesriem canyon en de Sossus Vlei. De Sesriem canyon viel wat tegen maar de Sossusvlei was een hoogtepunt. De Sossusvlei is een vlakte tussen de zandduinen waar de temperatuur rond de 40 graden schommelde. Onvoorstelbaar dat hier beesten kunnen leven. De zandduinen reizen tot wel 300 meter hoog rondom een reusachtige zandvlakte. In een terreinwagen zijn we naar de vlakte gereden en daar wat gewandeld in de hitte.

Na bezoek aan de Sossusvlei naar de Fish river Canyon gereden. Men zegt dat dit, na de Grand Canyon in Amerika de grootste ter wereld is. Kan best kloppen want het was een indrukwekkend tafereel. Misschien was het nog mooier geweest als je het uitkijkpunt ’s ochtends bezoekt, dan staat de zon op de door de rivier uitgesleten bergwanden…

We overnachten twee dagen in Canyon Village in de middel of nowair. Een prachtig resort met leuke, authentieke huisjes waar de koffers nog per ezelkar worden bezorgd. Zwembad aanwezig en de volgende dag vrij!
