How about #2 with nrmt
“Phoenix?!”
His head shoots up, his shoulders strain from the officer’s grasp. “Miles!” He screams it, tugging against his cuffs, as he watches Miles fly down the courthouse stairs, Gumshoe’s coat wrapped around his shoulders and billowing all around him. Miles nearly crashes into him, sending them both careening against the squad car (and they would have, if this blonde jackass wasn’t holding on to Phoenix like he was actually going to try and run away). The man’s grip on his shoulders tightens, even as Miles’ hands scrabble for purchase on his suit jacket.
“Oh, God,” he whispers, knotting his fingers in Phoenix’s hair. “Oh God, oh God, I thought you died.” It stings, the way he pulls, but it’s good because he’s here and he knows Miles is alive, knows his fingers are real and his arms are real and that this is all real. “I thought you were dead.” His voice shakes with every trembling breath, and Phoenix just wants to scoop him up and carry him home.
“Edgeworth.” The cop’s voice is tense, terse, but somehow almost regretful.
Miles doesn’t remove his arms. “A moment, Lang,” he spits, hot and furious, his nails digging into Phoenix’s back like claws. “Give me a single damn moment.”
And he sighs, irritated, but he relents. Phoenix feels his cuffed hands fall slack behind him, and he leans against Miles, legs trembling. “Miles,” he croaks, voice weak. He nudges Miles’ head aside as gently as he can and dips his head, pressing a single, soft kiss to his lips, no longer than a heartbeat or two. Miles draws back, silent, simply staring at him, mouth ever-so-slightly open.
Phoenix leans forward, then, pressing their clammy foreheads together. “I thought I lost you,” he says, lips barely moving.
That body, in his office—Miles’ office—wearing his coat, slumped over his desk.
His fingerprints were all over the scene. The victim’s blood, all over his hands.
Who could blame him?
There’re fingers curled around the nape of his neck, again, fingers curled in the front of his shirt, and Miles is kissing him, hard, first a gentle press of the lips and then a nip, a bite, an invasion of tongue as he drinks Phoenix down. Phoenix runs his tongue along Miles’ lower lip, groans at the way Miles goes limp against him, at the way he presses their bodies impossibly closer—
It’s all over before he can even open his eyes. “Edgeworth, come on.” The cop—Lang, apparently—interrupts, eyes averted but his hand now firmly clasped between Phoenix’s shoulder blades.
Miles pulls away, pupils blown, hands fisted in the front of Phoenix’s shirt. “I’ll figure this out,” he whispers. “I’ll— Gumshoe’s here, we’ll investigate right now, we’ll figure this whole thing out, and you’ll be out of there before they can even finish checking you in, I promise.”
“Don’t you dare go back in there, Miles. It’s not safe, who knows what—”
One hand lays soft on his cheek; the other tightens on his shoulder, gripping to the point of painful.
“I’ll figure it out,” Miles says again, pulling his other hand close to his chest. “I’ll take care of everything. I promise.”
His back hits the ancient seats of the police cruiser, the door slams behind him, and all he can do is watch in horror as Miles stands on the sidewalk, coat billowing in the wind. The flames swallowing the prosecutors’ office lick ever higher, and the sound of approaching fire department sirens are Phoenix’s only comfort as Miles turns and marches himself back up those marble stairs as the sea of fleeing people parted around him.
---
Feel free to ask for another prompt from this list!

saw ur post about seven yr gap nrmts so now im curious to hear ur thoughts about it
hi of courseee thank you for asking hehe ^_^ must be said however i’ve only played aa1-4, haven’t done 5/6 or especially aai yet (EDIT: i’m actually about halfway through 5 now as i’m finishing this up but point still stands). so i don’t entirely know what edgeworth was up to during the gap (though i do know it’s mentioned in aa5 that he flew phoenix out a couple times to help with cases). that being said honestly most of my reasoning is based off of what we know about phoenix and what he was up to. also for anyone who’s not aware anon is talking about me saying that i don’t think narumitsu would be in a secret relationship during the seven year gap (which is a fic trope i’ve seen a lot of)
okayyy so basically like i think phoenix is not a very open person. he is very caring and compassionate, but he doesn’t actually reveal a lot about himself. this is not as obvious in the first three games bc you ARE phoenix, but it really comes out when looking at phoenix from apollo’s perspective. and like some of that has been prompted BY the events of the 7yg, but if you look back at the other games, there’s a lot phoenix kept to himself. so i think the 7yg probably really exacerbated that part of him. i think it’s especially important to consider that his last relationship he was super open about his feelings telling everyone how much he loved dahlia and showing of her necklace, only to find out that she hated him, hated his earnestness, and literally tried to poison him and frame him for murder. so like, edgeworth is not the only one with baggage in this relationship. and like, he’s just been framed again!!! it’s the same thing all over again…he got to a happy, comfortable place in his life only to have the rug pulled out from under him.
i don’t think that 7yg phoenix doesn’t trust edgeworth per se. but at the beginning, i don’t think he trusts anyone. even himself. i don’t think he would even tell any of his friends what happened right away, yet alone lean on them for support. he even says “it was a pretty dark time in my life” and that the only thing that kept him going was trucy—not any of his other loved ones. he was in a severe depressive state and struggling with alcoholism—i truly believe the only things that mattered to him, especially at the beginning, were taking care of/protecting trucy and eventually starting to gather evidence. i also think that like, he would’ve been very wary of introducing other people to trucy, ESPECIALLY edgeworth with his. proclivity for leaving.
i think that like. the “narumitsu had a secret relationship” really downplays how severely phoenix struggled during the seven year gap and also the impact of kristoph. many people when writing nrmts secret relationship portray it as if phoenix hates kristoph, completely distrusts him, and is just playing along with him. i think the reality was actually much more complex than that. think about phoenix saying “i don’t know what i think” when kristoph asks if he suspects him. and that’s at the VERY END, where kristoph has already been convicted of murder and all the evidence points towards him.
kristoph and phoenix were friends for seven years. i do believe phoenix suspected him somewhat for most of the seven years. i believe phoenix definitely did not want him around trucy. but i don’t think he didn’t feel genuine affection and care for kristoph ever. kristoph was the only consistent thing for him in the 7yg other than trucy, who while he obviously loves dearly, a father-daughter relationship is much different from a friendship. he was pushing people away, but he was also lonely. and i think kristoph was also a safe option for him. he didn’t have to let the people he truly cared about see him in this state. he could justify not letting kristoph too close to “truly” hurt him because of his suspicions, but he could also rely on him for company and comfort etc…
i also think phoenix was like. super ashamed of what had happened and what he had become. a lot of people present his appearance/demeanor as a way to “trick” kristoph into not viewing him as a threat. it’s possible that later into the 7yg he played it up for that reason, but like i truly think that’s indicative of where he was really at in the beginning. i don’t think he would’ve wanted edgeworth to see him like that. and i don’t think he would’ve thought that he deserved edgeworth in that state. as a proud believer in toxic krisnix yaoi, i think he convinced himself that like, his relationship with kristoph was all that he deserved. i also think it’s important to point out that like, when phoenix at his BEST tried to help edgeworth, he tried to kill himself and faked his death. they may have worked it out and gotten to a better place but like. i think phoenix at his lowest would remember that and think what could he possibly offer edgeworth NOW if that’s what happened then.
to be clear, i don’t think phoenix completely isolated himself for the entire seven years. i think eventually he did start to open up to his friends and edgeworth a bit more. we know that he helped edgeworth with his cases. i think he eventually even told edgeworth about kristoph, the jurist system, etc. and i think edgeworth helped him build his case and do that work. but i firmly believe the shadow of gavin and his disbarment would prevent him from ever pursuing a relationship like that with edgeworth until after everything was over, both for practical reasons and out of insecurity and low self-worth. i think he’d view it as almost needing to clear his name to prove he was “worthy” of having love like that, esp. with edgeworth. and like, i don’t think they’d get together right after the gap cause i think there’s like a lot of healing to be done, but i think edgeworth would be a huge part of that process for phoenix. and isn’t that cuties ^_^ so basically i find that to be a much more compelling narrative than “actually they were together and basically fine the whole time.” make those boys suffer. and then get better :)

I've put a bunch of old drabble requests into a giant doc and i'm slowly poking at them and I figured since it's nrmts week why not do a real old prompts from @bardicspiration that was a "hope we don't get caught" kiss post aa4.
Perfect little exercise to distract me for a few hours!
++++
Miles had a lot of time to think about how he felt about the entire situation. He had the time from the first text message from Phoenix, I think I broke the case, then seconds after, I mean in a positive way not in a way that needs to be fixed — just in case, you know, you thought I needed your help.
That had stung, a little, but he had taken it in stride. He knew what it was supposed to mean (you don’t need to panic and fly halfway across the world to save the day, I have this handled), and it made him think about the situation.
Then, the next text message a week later. Check your email.
Article proofs and case files that Phoenix had access to before they would go public. Outlining one simple thing: The case, that had subsumed Phoenix for seven years, had finally come to an end.
And Miles didn’t do a single thing.
It seems a little unfair, he thinks during the 11 hour flight, that he couldn’t help. Both of them were people that had a hard time asking for help, but shouldn’t he be more prepared to give it? Something more than a silent shoulder for support when things got rough?
All of this and more is what Miles thinks about as he makes his way through customs at LAX, as he remains in pensive silence as Gumshoe drives him to the hotel the Wrights are hosting the party in.
Miles had so much time to think about the entire situation, but absolutely none of that mattered when Phoenix looked up at him and smiled in that wholly radiant way he hadn’t in seven years.
“You made it right in time for the toast,” Phoenix says, laughter in his voice as he reaches to take Miles’ suitcase. He waylaid them in the lobby instead of letting Miles go check-in and leave his things with the bell desk.
“I ran every red light to get here,” Gumshoe says proudly, because that’s the joke by this point, and Miles sighs and shakes his head.
“He didn’t. He drove responsibly.”
Phoenix winks conspiratorially. “Right. I won’t tell the cops.”
Gumshoe sputters as he follows behind them, successfully cutting off any chance of retreat Miles might have had to duck away long enough to stop by the bell desk.
“This couldn’t wait at least a minute?” Miles grumbles, though he finds that he doesn’t really mean it as Phoenix’s hand brushes his as they walk.
“I’ll help you with your luggage after this is done,” Phoenix promises.
He doesn’t have to. Miles can easily leave it with a bellman. But there’s another brush of hands, the faintest pressure of a finger hooked around his to form a bare hand hold, a reminder that it’s been months since they’ve last seen each other, and Miles keeps his mouth shut.
Trucy has her arms around him as soon as they are at the table, and then she flounces away before he can remember to respond — pressing a glass of sparkling apple juice into his hand as she goes to greet Gumshoe.
At the place of honor at the table, hands clenched nervously around a mostly empty pint, is the young attorney Apollo that won the case. His eyes bug out of his head as he spots Miles, and he nods politely and gives what he hopes is a reassuring smile. There’s Kay and Ema and Maya, only Franziska missing from their quartet though she couldn’t avoid a court date to make it out here. Pearl gives him a little wave and an even littler smile.
And those are just the people he recognizes, though there’s even more crammed around the cluster of tables. People that Phoenix has gathered to him over the years that Miles hasn’t been there.
Trucy returns to sit at Apollo’s side, leaning companionably against his shoulder, and Miles remembers with a start that Phoenix mentioned they were half-siblings.
Phoenix claps his hand a little roughly on Apollo’s shoulder, and the resulting yelp is loud enough to end the conversation from everyone around the table. He lifts his glass of sparkling juice and casts a smile around the gathered crowd. “Thank you all for coming. Each of you has been instrumental in helping me these past seven years, but of course none of this could have been done without Apollo. Your support for me has extended to him, and he’s more than earned a place at the Wright Anything Agency. This is to congratulate him on a run of successful trial and to welcome him on as an permanent member of my team. Cheers!”
There’s a riotous applause from those gathered at the table, Trucy whooping in support as she shakes Apollo’s arm.
The young man’s smile is watery as everyone descends on him to offer their own personal support and congratulations.
It also serves as a perfect distraction for Phoenix to usher Miles back out of the hotel restaurant towards the front desk. He stands back, Miles’ suitcase still in his hand, as Miles checks in.
And because he can read the situation without being told, Miles declines any luggage assistance, saying that they have it handled, and follows Phoenix to the elevator.
“You still haven’t told everyone?” he asks as they wait.
There’s a tinge of embarrassment to Phoenix’s posture as he navigates the suitcase into the elevator when the doors open. “I’ve been so caught up with handling the press surrounding Kristoph’s case that I don’t want to chance what would happen if our relationship went public.”
“You think someone would leak it?”
Phoenix shrugs, then looks down as Miles takes his hand. His smile softens, and he rubs a thumb across Miles’ knuckles in response. “There’s still a part of me that’s having a hard time letting myself trust people again. Trucy knows. It’s hard to keep anything from her. Maya, I’m pretty certain has figured it out.”
“Franziska knows.”
“Couldn’t keep it from her?”
Miles shrugs as the elevator dings to signal their floor. “I tell her everything.” He double checks the room number on his key packet. “I understand. There’s press for cases, which is fine. That’s a part of the job. But when it starts to carve its way into your personal life…”
He had his fair share of the press sticking their noses where it didn’t belong after the von Karma case. After the Gant case. After his return, despite how discreet he attempted to be.
He shoulders open the door to his room and stands aside to let Phoenix bring in the suitcase, though that’s about as long as he allows himself to wait.
Miles pulls Phoenix in for a kiss before the door has even finished swinging shut.
“We can’t be gone long,” Phoenix tries to say, though he makes no effort to dissuade Miles — in fact, doing quite the opposite and draping his arms around Miles’ neck to keep him in place.
“They’re all very intelligent people, I’m pretty sure they’ve already put two and two together,” Miles laughs as he backs Phoenix up against the door. “And if not, let them guess.”
Phoenix’s laugh is muffled through the kiss.

9, 22, 26 for the fic writer asks!
hi rylan, tysm for the ask!!! 🥰
9. what fic meant the most to you to write?
this is a pretty tough question! looking back i wrote a lot more than i thought this year (2023 has been so long jfc) but i guess i would have to give this to status. mostly just because it finished off the series that really kicked me into gear in this fandom 💕
22. share an excerpt from your favorite scene.
it was an open secret they were frustrated with each other, phoenix with edgeworth for running away again, edgeworth with him for “giving up.” things were made worse by the distance, made worse by the constant friction in the ways they’d both always done little things that drove each other crazy and now amplified into disaster by everything else.
so the notion of edgeworth being a “friend” instead of someone he just miserably wanted to hatefuck just to get over him was laughable, but he couldn’t tell his daughter that.
he’s been thinking about it too long and he knows she knows that. he pulls away from the half-hug she’s got him in and picks up her crooked hat from atop her head, ruffling her hair softly then setting it back down straighter and pulling her back in for a tighter hug. “yeah. everything’s fine, kiddo. sometimes he’s just annoying, you know? seems like he knows everything, doesn’t it?”
that earns a laugh, which always makes him feel a little lighter. “i think he does, daddy. he’s so smart. but you’re smart too, just in a different way.” she leans her head against his shoulder and it tips her hat again.
“mm. you think so?” he asks with a low chuckle, scratching at his stubble.
“mhmm! he reads like a lot of books, i bet. and probably wikipedia, for fun. i like to do that too sometimes. like i bet if i asked him… the national flower of austria, he could tell me in a second. but you’re better at people. like, you could tell that snake guy was a good man who wasn’t just selling us a sick snake for more than it was worth, right? d’you think miles would be able to tell that?” she asks. her eyes are closed as she talks, and phoenix wonders what she’s picturing in that endless imagination of hers.
“i think he could have gone online and done the research to find out, but i don’t think he would have agreed to this in the first place,” phoenix snorts.
“because he’s too proper for a pet like a snake,” trucy sniffs with a faux air of decorum, and phoenix lets out a loud laugh. he’s needed that; she always knows what he needs.
“yeah, he is. but it’s not his decision. he’s helping but ultimately it’s still my decision, and i know you’ll take good care of ant.”
my favorite parts of writing decadence are actually the scenes between trucy and phoenix. i think during 7yg he really does need her just as much as she needs him, and i wanted their relationship to be more than just set dressing to the nrmt, even though that is the focus. i hope i pulled that off and keep pulling it off. more soon! i know i keep saying that but... more soon (croaks and dies).
26. if you had to choose one, what was THE most satisfying writing moment of your year?
also a hard question. if we're talking about specifically writing, and not like, anything related to posting the writing, it has to be writing decadence. i just find a lot of catharsis in writing arguments, especially of characters in very unhealthy (manic, anxious, etc.) mindsets. it's a place i know very intimately from my own life but with Help have come a long place from, and don't want to return to obviously, because it's not fun in real life. but it makes for compelling writing/reading imo, i can't really explain why misunderstandings and arguments are some of my favorite things to dig into. i guess there's still some part of me, even now that i am medicated and doing okay, that loves the satisfaction of being the architect of fights and deciding who gets the last word and when it's over, something that very much is not how it works when you are the one having a manic episode or anxiety attack.

Heavy on your Tongue
Like Icarus flying too close to the sun - Here it is. The second person POV nrmt cock warming fic. Spoilers: not a lot of cock warming. Not read! 850 words give or take. Post aa4 and all that.
You'd been working for a while now, looking through readings to study for the bar once more.
It'd taken some convincing to get you to start, you'd thought that part of your life was far behind you. The many reasons to go through with the decision had been listed over multiple dinners and late nights. And you were happy with it, truly.
That didn't mean it wasn't exhausting though. And tedious.
Luckily, some things made it much better.
You'd just finished one of the many unit tests laying on your desk, given to you courtesy of one Chief Prosecutor.
You set your pencil down on the desk, looking down and smiling fondly.
"Miles?" You croon, brushing his hair back from where it fell over his face.
He doesn't seem to notice, eyes half-lidded.
"Miles." You repeat, sliding your hand down until it cups his cheek. He nuzzles into your hand, a hum coming from his mouth.
It reverberates straight on your cock, still tucked between his lips.
"I'm finished."
He hums once more in acknowledgement, but makes no other movements. He looks up at you through his eyelashes and it seems like this is the only place he wants to be.
It's sweet, really. You're the only one who's seen him like this, he's told you himself. There was a certain vulnerability he said he despised, like it was something to be extracted lest it be paraded around.
And yet, here he is. And here you are. Together at last. Where there were no false rumors or oaths of secrecy to keep you apart.
You slip from his mouth. Laugh at the confused noise he makes. He looks for all the world like a puppy who's gotten his toy taken away.
"I said I'm done." You wonder if he'll take the hint. It was his idea, after all.
You run your hand through his hair once more.
His head rests against your thigh, motionlessly content.
You swipe up the drool across his chin with your hand, rubbing it across your sweatpants in a manner that if Miles were any more lucid, he'd be horrified with.
You both stay like that for a few moments, running a hand through his hair as he kneels before you. And as much as you hate to ruin the moment between you, you open your mouth.
"Wanna grade it?" You ask, trying once more to hold up your end of the bargain. Though, it seems your companion didn't remember that much at all.
He blinks. "Hmm? Oh, sure."
He removes himself from your leg slowly, stretches languidly. The softest groan leaves his mouth and you wish you could still feel it in your core.
You push out the desk chair to allow him enough room to stand. He does so and turns, taking the paper in his hand.
Your hands wrap around his middle and pulls him back to you. He lets you do this without complaint, settling into your lap.
"Let's see here..." He says, trying to sound nonchalant about the way you fiddle with his belt. He goes through your papers in relative silence, offering no praise or complaint besides the occasional "that rusty on evidence law, Wright?" and "that was an intentionally obtuse question, good job."
By that point you've removed his cock from his pants, even gotten him to stand slightly to slide his boxers down his thighs.
"You starred this question." Miles says, somewhat breathless despite not moving for several minutes.
You can't blame him exactly, with your fingers running featherlight touches over his length.
"Yeah. I wasn't sure about it."
"You got it wrong." He says, most unhelpfully.
"Well, can you tell me why? Last I heard that's the standard." You lean forward, head on his shoulder.
"It's be-cause...It's because two years ago another case overrode the precedent set in- ngh." He trails off, evidently distracted by the teeth running over his earlobe.
"Interesting." You say, and continue.
"Wright."
You hum in acknowledgement.
"Wright." He hisses.
"What?"
"You should pay attention."
"This is how I best pay attention. Plus, I already did my part, yeah? The test is filled out, you're the one who hasn't finished it."
"Perhaps because I have someone distracting me."
"Are you calling me distracting?" You grin.
"Extremely." He says dryly. You back off slightly, giving one last squeeze to his member just to hear him inhale sharply. Then you lean back and let him work, red pen that he brought from home flying through the questions.
It's a bit difficult though, having a lapful of prosecutor and nowhere to put that energy. Your hands seem to have a mind of their own, meandering over his sides and landing at his hips.
You've just begun running a finger down his spine, starting to dip lower, when he slams the paper onto the table. He stands with a speed you weren't anticipating, sending the chair backwards a few inches.
He turns to face you, eyes blazing. "You passed." He says, before he drops down to his knees and takes you whole.
"Oh, fuck."
Some things just made the hours of studying worth it.

Miles can't take any longer Phoenix's aloof attitude, but the man himself can't also hide his anger / frustration in front of poor Miles ;_;
New little fact : I used the broken mug here to kinda show Phoenix's state of mind at this period 🥺

Surpriiiise : I'll post 3 pages from now on each week *wink wink* 👀
Edgeworth uses 'Piercing stare'. It's very effective ! (¬‿¬)
New fun fact : those first 7 pages were done after I've done the whole doujin. After re-reading it a lot, I thought "Wait, it's too sudden the way it starts HMMM". So yeah, it was supposed to be 34 pages 🫣 (but no regrets I added new pages !)

Edgeworth | Ace Attorney Series) ✓ Rating : Teen And Up Audiences ⁕ Links : AO3 ◆ Summary : This story takes place 3 years after Phoenix Wright's disbarment and "Ace Attorney Investigations : Collections". Miles Edgeworth starts to visit occasionally Phoenix to request his aid on some of his cases he received in Europe and to check on him and Trucy. Miles is still not aware what fully happened the day Phoenix got disbarred. He only knows from him that he's now working at the Borsh Club bar as a pianist and vaguely shared his suspicion toward the defense attorney, Kristoph Gavin. for @pizza-snake, nrmts having a “tired parents” kiss
-----
Phoenix finds Miles already looking about ready to give up the ghost, one arm draped dramatically over his eyes, head tilted back against the arm of the couch as the rest of him stretches out across the cushions. “Hey,” he says, kicking off his slippers and nudging Miles with the back of his hand. “Scoot.”
“Find your own couch,” Miles grumbles, but scoots over all the same to allow Phoenix the space to crawl on beside him. He shifts onto his side, moving his arm from over his eyes to around Phoenix’s waist as he curls up against his husband’s back. “If I never have to see another twelve year old again, it will be too soon.”
“I hate to break it to you,” Phoenix says on a laugh, “but our daughter is twelve.”
“Yesssss.” The word is drawn out with the same sort of unimpressed drawl Phoenix is used to hearing from the other side of the court room. “A fact I remember quite vividly due to it being her birthday party we just celebrated.”
With another laugh, Phoenix rolls over onto his other side so he can be nose to nose with Miles, then leans in to close the distance for a kiss. “Did you have fun?”
Miles hums into the second kiss, but doesn’t bother opening his eyes when Phoenix draws away. “A difficult question, to be sure.”
“You had quite a thrilling conversation with Mrs. Kelly about… what was it again?”
“Oh, you thought that was a thrilling conversation? Is that why you didn’t save me from it?”
“Chlorine tablets? I think that was it.”
“We don’t even own a pool!”
“So thrilling.”
Miles’ reply is only a tired grumble, and he tucks his head beneath Phoenix’s chin. “We are not having the parents next time Trucy turns twelve.”
“It’s a good thing she only turns twelve once, then, hm?” Phoenix grins as Miles attempts to butt his chin.
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes, I think I do.”
“Good.”
“We should get a pool.”
Miles groans into the space between them, his fingers curling into useless fists against Phoenix’s back. “I hate you.”
Phoenix settles in comfortably with his chin on top of Miles’ head and gives a content sigh. “If I take cleanup duty, will you say you love me?”
The man in his arms pulls back and blinks up at him blearily -- Phoenix wonders where his glasses are, hopes they’re safely out of the way -- his usually carefully styled hair in a state of disarray. “You know I love you.”
“Good,” Phoenix says, and accepts another tired, off-center kiss.

yesterday @thesugarcookieday distracted me from being glum by making us both sad over 7yg ldr nrmts+trucy headcanons so i decided to return the favor in between working on things that I should Actually be working on
i love this fambily, ur honor
----
Trucy is still mostly asleep when they disembark from the plane. Phoenix is used to this, of course — having more than his fair share of handling all of their things one-armed as he carried her in the other. The stewardess is nice enough to help him with their things, even if he tells her he’s fine. (But it’s hard to say no when the older woman seemed to be extremely fond of Trucy, so he lets her help.)
The line through customs moves smoothly, thankfully, and Trucy remains mostly asleep through the entire process. The one time they did this when she was awake, Phoenix had to keep making sure she didn’t wander off to investigate something or show someone a card trick, and then he’d lose sight of her for a few minutes and it was a whole process. Half asleep, he knows exactly where she is, can present their passports single-handedly, and has perfected the art of stacking their backpacks and single suitcase.
Not that they’ve made this trip often, but the frequent weekend trips to visit ‘Aunt’ Maya in Kurain have helped hone the skill.
Phoenix’s phone buzzes in his pocket, and he juggles Trucy carefully as he pulls it free.
Have you successfully convinced customs that you’re safe to allow into the country?
“Hah hah,” Phoenix mutters, and Trucy mumbles the laugh back into his shoulder.
“What’s funny, Daddy?” she asks, becoming a little more awake as they jostle their way through the airport. “Oh. We made it through the long line already?”
“You slept right through it. Do you want down?” He thumbs out a reply, careful to keep an eye on where he’s walking as he does so. Despite your wishes, I have infiltrated your country once more.
Trucy hums in thought, then nods. “I want to pull the suitcase!”
“You sure? It’s almost taller than you.”
She pouts. “I can do it!”
Phoenix laughs and puts her down, ruffling her hair as she attempts to fix her skirts.
“Daddy! Stop!!” Trucy’s pout only deepens, though the seriousness of it is greatly diminished by the creases on her cheeks from her travel pillow. “Is Uncle Miles here already?”
“Should be.” While the text didn’t say as much, Phoenix knows how to interpret most of Miles’ humor. But to be sure, he also sends, Truce and I will be down shortly.
The reply is almost immediate. See you soon.
Phoenix can’t help the smile before returning his phone to his pocket. “Alright. Do you need to use the bathroom?”
“No!”
“Are you sure? You remember how long the drive was back to Miles’ place, don’t you?”
She thinks about this, tapping her finger to her chin. “Okay, you’re right, hold on.” Trucy gives his hand a pat, as if telling a dog to wait, then skips off in the direction of the nearest restroom.
Phoenix takes the time to stretch, pulling off his beanie to ruffle his own hair — knowing that there’s no possibility of making it look even the slightest bit presentable. How Miles manages to step off of a sixteen hour flight looking as immaculate as always, Phoenix has yet to learn.
Perhaps it’s one of the perks of First Class, though he’s more certain it just has to do with Miles’ inability to look ruffled in front of other people.
Trucy emerges from the restroom, looking more awake and refreshed than when he put her down. Well, at least one of them will look presentable.
She rejoins him, pulling her backpack free from the tower he made. “Okay! Let’s go!”
“Are you sure you want to carry the luggage?” Phoenix asks as he takes his own backpack.
“I am sure!” she says, and expertly nudges the suitcase with her foot to tip it down in her direction. “I helped Daddy and Uncle Valant move equipment all the time! This is nothing.”
He laughs and reaches out to pinch one of her biceps, and she puffs out her cheeks in response. “Oh, good, you’ll be able to take care of me in my old age.”
Trucy flexes her free arm as she starts walking. “Don’t worry, Daddy! Soon, I will carry you when you get too tired!”
“I’m going to get you to make that promise in writing!” He’s not even thirty, but with his luck, who knows how soon that would be.
She takes his hand in hers, and proceeds to take the lead in navigating the airport. Even though this is only her third time visiting, and she can’t read German (as far as he’s aware), she has a keen sense for where to go and who to follow.
They descend into the area near the luggage carousels, and Trucy bounces up on the balls of her feet with every other step.
“You’re going to trip if you keep that up,” Phoenix says, steadying the suitcase after one particularily wild leap sends it skidding to the side and nearly colliding with someone passing them.
“Can you see him, Daddy?” she asks, ignoring his caution. “I’m not tall enough.”
“You wanted to be put down.”
She sticks her tongue out at him and does another bounce to try and see. “Why is everyone so tall?”
Phoenix scans the crowd as well, trying not to wonder if he is simply looking in the wrong place or if he’s glancing over Miles or—
The phone in his hand buzzes with an incoming call and Phoenix answers it without even looking at the caller ID. “Do you always look so lost when in a crowd, Wright?”
He frowns out of habit, and has to tug Trucy back to his side before she can go wandering off in search of the man currently on the phone. “You can see me?”
“Yes, I can.”
Phoenix scans the crowd again, frown starting to deepen as he ignores the twinge of panic, but then their eyes meet as a group of tourists parts and his heart jumps as he watches the smile form over Miles’ face.
Miles’ lips move seconds before his voice floats through the phone. “Ah, you found me.”
“Of course I did,” Phoenix says at the same time Trucy tugs on his hand and says, “Oh! I spotted Uncle Miles!”
He lets her tug him a few steps before she simply abandons him and the suitcase to fling herself headlong through the rush of people.
“Trucy!” he calls, hanging up and scrambling after her.
Another flood of tourists surges past, and he scoots through the thick of them to come out the other side — just in time to see Trucy being caught up in Miles’ arms and her delighted laughter ringing out.
“You’ve grown considerably, Trucy Wright,” Miles says with a groan. “What has your father been feeding you?”
“Haven’t you heard?” Phoenix asks as he gets within earshot. “She’s been working out. Show him your muscles, Trucy.”
This time, she has both arms free to flex, and Miles gives an appreciative whistle. “I see,” he muses. “It all makes sense now.”
Phoenix tucks his hands into the pockets of his sweatshirt, resisting the urge to reach automatically for Miles — always afraid of the distance at first, uncertain what might have changed between visits. “She’s volunteered to carry me in my old age.”
“Well, I certainly wouldn’t be able to manage. I wear myself out with paperwork.” Miles sets Trucy back down and moves to close the distance between them.
The pull is automatic and magnetic, and Phoenix frees his hands just in time to wrap his arms around Miles. “I’ve missed you,” he says, the sentiment buried into Miles’ shoulder as he tries to tug himself closer.
“And I, you,” Miles returns, his nose pressed to the side of Phoenix’s head.
There is a beat before Phoenix can feel Trucy’s arm around his hip, and he looks down to see her clinging onto both of them with a large grin on her face.
“I want a hug, too!” she says, rocking up on the balls of her feet and giving her most winning smile.
“Dads only hug, sorry,” he teases, and ruffles her hair.
She pouts, arms crossed over her chest, but the expression doesn’t last that long before Phoenix gives a sigh and scoops her back up into his arms. From this height, she gives Miles another hug, and snags Phoenix’s beanie for herself.
“Hey!” he says, having to free one hand to try and snag it back. “I’m the one with bad hair, not you!”
“You keep ruffling mine!” she says matter of factly and tugs the beanie on, even though it’s too big and slips down low over her brow. Doesn’t diminish the large, teasing grin she wears though.
Miles laughs, and combs his fingers back through Phoenix’s hair (so maybe it wasn’t such a bad thing after all). “Come on, then. Let’s get you home so you can relax.”
Phoenix swoops in for a quick kiss, hearing Trucy gasp as Miles doesn’t let him immediately pull back. When he looks, he sees that she’s pulled the beanie down over her eyes. “Are you going to pull the suitcase again, or are you going to make me carry you?”
“I’m tired, Daddy, carry me,” she says, and drapes her arms around his neck to settle her cheek against the top of his head. The beanie is still pulled down over her eyes, so he reaches up to pluck it free.
“I’ll get your suitcase,” Miles offers, and ignores Phoenix’s protests — and also effectively ends them by taking Phoenix’s free hand in his own. “There. You have Trucy, I have your suitcase. Seems fair.” He gives Phoenix’s hand a fond squeeze.
“Alright, you win this round.”
Miles leans in to give him another kiss, then leads them out of the airport towards where his car is waiting for them.
——
The drive back to Miles’ apartment takes a bit as it is a few cities over, though they also stop for lunch on the way in.
Trucy has to fight to stay awake in the back seat, as Phoenix has to remind her to stay awake until it’s bedtime here in Germany instead of responding to her body demanding California time. He gives her his phone to play games on during the long ride — content to sit with his hand in Miles’, the two of them talking softly as they drive.
The apartment is as clean as always and Trucy gives a delighted whoop as she bounces onto the sofa that will be pulled out for her bed later. She pulls out her deck of cards and barely gives Miles the chance to sit down before she’s already demonstrating her latest tricks for him.
They spend the rest of the afternoon like that, making plans for the two weeks of vacation. They order take out for dinner, and Trucy picks a movie that they all curl up onto the couch to watch.
When Trucy’s bedtime finally arrives, Phoenix helps Miles set up the pull-out sofa for her. She’s already back to being mostly asleep, so he has to usher her into the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face before carrying her back into the living room.
The room is dark, illuminated only by a nightlight in the corner, and the light spilling out of Miles’ open door.
Phoenix tucks Trucy into bed, running his hand through her hair as she gives a huge yawn. “You’ll be okay?”
“Yeah, I’ll be okay!”
“You know where to find me if you need anything.”
She nods, then throws her arms around his neck for a hug. “Goodnight, Daddy.”
“Goodnight, baby.” He gives her a kiss on her forehead before picking his way carefully across to Miles’ room.
Miles looks up from his phone when he hears the door click shut. He doesn’t have to say anything — he just sets aside his phone and barely manages to pull off his glasses before Phoenix collides with him.
He feels like he can finally breathe again the moment Miles’ arms close around him. “Christ, I’ve missed you,” he sighs.
“Are you alright?” Miles asks, fingers carding back through Phoenix’s hair.
“I am now.”
“Phoenix—”
“It’s fine. I’m fine.” It must not sound that convincing because Miles cups Phoenix’s face between his hands and pulls him back far enough to make eye contact. “You do the Disappointed Dad face a lot better than I do. Trucy would listen to me more if I could pull that off.”
Miles gives a snort of amusement before leaning in to kiss him. “I’m not disappointed. I’m just worried.”
“Nothing I haven’t already told you.”
“They’re all valid things to be worried about, and it’s okay to not be fine.”
Phoenix shifts up so he can sit on the edge of the bed next to Miles. “I know. I just… Everything feels easier here.”
Miles lifts an eyebrow. “In Germany?”
He rocks to the side and nudges Miles with his shoulder. “Next to you.”
There’s a breath of silence between them as Miles takes his hand, lifting it to his lips and placing a tender kiss on their joined fingers. “I’m sorry I had to cancel my trip out over Christmas.”
Phoenix takes a breath, but Miles cuts him off with a kiss — and a second and a third when the first wasn’t enough. “You don’t have to apologize,” Phoenix says instead of it’s fine, because each time he tries Miles doesn’t let him get the words out. “You know you don’t have to apologize for that.”
“I get so few chances to see you,” Miles murmurs against his lips, and Phoenix turns it into another kiss.
He kisses across Miles’ jaw, then down his neck — nuzzling the soft skin there to earn a throaty laugh. “Then make up for lost time,” he says, and gives a sharp, delighted grin as he is tugged into Miles’ lap.
