Mind map: How can I inform and centralise my practice from the lens of the Pasifika-Aotearoa diaspora so that I can interpret the being of 'leiti' to an audience?

A lot of the ideas that culminated throughout the construction and discussion of my mind map pertained insular ideals of identity within a Pacific worldview, separate from the European frameworks that whiteness navigate. The ideas that orbit the meaning of leiti, how it informs itself, and how subject and spectator perceive leiti as being.

Femme, male, duty, presence, dominant, submissive, obedient? I need to figure out how these words can discern a Pacific worldview - where and how can I structure a position to show the core of my research interest and what a queer-Pacific worldview defines.

Maybe there's a foundation to be built through the mean of making in my process? Can socially charged concepts discern the idea of a queer-Pacific worldview, and if so, how can I manifest that subject?

As a starting point, I have decided to sift through colonial photographs of Tongan folk through the lens of New Zealand photographer Alfred Burton and Thomas Andrew. My goal is to identify the narrative of Western consumption and perception of Pacific people in Aotearoa. Through this initial exploration, I aim to develop a framework for understanding the existence of first-generation, New Zealand-born leiti in my practice. Building on this foundation, I will then explore objects or artifacts that speak to the Tongan diaspora within Tamaki Makaurau. Henry suggested a total of nine objects or artifacts that can reflect the intrinsic aspects of being leiti, femme, male, duty, etc., as reflected in my mind map.

These artefacts need to personify what purpose we leiti serve, space we occupy, from a contemporary worldview that can translate my practice. This focus will be in junction with self-image and Pacific research methodologies such as Talanoa.

36 Inhabited Islands, 35 Volcanic Eruptions (LoopLand Tonga)

Not the most popular facts about the state, but still, Tonga has survived 35 volcanic eruptions, the last one in 1960. The inhabitants of this country have problems with freshwater, so when it rains, you can often find locals who collect rainwater in special tanks.

Concerning interesting stories. Douglas decided to take himself on a little trip and visit all the radio stations in the state. We lived in the capital - the city of Nuku'alofa. From there, our wanderer began his journey, arranged for five interviews.

Interestingly, after his joke about the fact that the locals do not like the Chinese people, the remaining interviews were abruptly canceled. After that, Douglas came up with a cunning plan and we decided to help him. Our film crew absolutely loves Mission: Impossible films. We distracted the radio hosts while Douglas burst into the air. In the third studio, we were beaten up by the guards, along with a disguised traveler (he was in the uniform of a security guard), so he got on the air.

In the fourth studio, he pretended to be a janitor who came at the wrong time. And for the fifth time, we knocked out the radio hosts and put on our own show. In general, we are now not particularly welcome in this country.

News is now starting to come out, and the Kiwi and Aussie air forces have done aerial surveys of the damage. It's not good:

A second island in Tonga has been left with no homes standing and severe damage following Saturday’s volcanic erpution that promoted a tsunami, according to sources.

More details have also been revealed about the two of the three people to have been confirmed dead.

The eruption of the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano – just 65 kilometres from Tonga’s main islands – and the subsequent tsunami, devastated homes and destroyed deep sea cables, disrupting Tonga’s communications with the world.

Ulu'alo Po'uhila, editor of newspaper Kakalu ‘o Tonga, said he received news from a government official at the New Zealand High Commission office in Nukualofa, shortly after 1pm on Wednesday, that further devastation had been reported following damage assessments.

Po'uhila said the island of Atata, one of the closest to the volcano, had been completely destroyed, with no houses left standing.

He wasn’t sure how many people lived on the island but said it was home to the Royal Sunset Island Resort.

An update on the resort’s Facebook page on Tuesday read: “For the resort, which is much lower - it was fully submerged by the tsunami and do not expect much left ... as the resort was still closed – fortunately there were no guests”.

Atata is the second island to be completely devastated, with no homes standing.

A Tonga Government update earlier confirmed houses on one of the islands, Mango, had also been destroyed.

Mango has a population of about 50 people and was the island closest to the eruption, Po'uhila said.

Po'uhila said Fonoi Island, in the Ha’apai Group had only two houses standing. About 50 people lived there, he said.

The Tongan government earlier said an evacuation had begun for the outer islands.

Residents from Atata will be moved to Tongatapu, while those on Mango and Fonoi will move to Namuka Island and the western side of Tongatapu.

In the village of Kanokupolu, on Tongatapu, 21 houses have been destroyed and 35 severely damaged, while two homes were flattened at Eua, and 45 severely damaged.

Eight houses in Kolomotu’a, in the Nuku’alofa District, were completely uninhabitable.
