Over spare and jazzy production, slowthai and Danny Brown are a brilliant match up, each overflowing with dynamic energy but moving in distinctly different directions. As ever, slowthai is angry and unrelenting, pushing syllables through air as though he’s trying to puncture the surface tension of reality. Though Danny Brown can also deliver a spit-flecked, bleary eyed verse, here he’s cutting the tension with stoner raps and affability. “in your eyes” is a cut and paste collage -- slowthai’s verse wasn’t even recorded over this beat, rather lifted and dropped into the song -- that hangs together impeccably because whether by design or destiny, each element breathes and thrives on this sort of proximity. The two disparate verses are tied together with the song’s evocative, ambient underpinings and the result far exceeds its one-off conception.

For far too long I’ve been letting MG trojan horse prog songs into this web site, confident that I would never really like one of them, and for over a decade I’ve been right about this! But with “in your eyes” the chickens (prog) have finally come home to roost (worn me down.) As with any great prog song, the backstory is key: from the way slowthai’s verse was originally laid down over another beat, to the way the title refers to a sample that got stripped out of the final mix for clearance reasons. A confluence of accident and ambition that brought these artists together to build a narrative that begins furiously in the gutter and slowly scrapes its way out, like the sunrise filtering into the alleyways. If the genre really is coming back - and signs point to yes - there’ll be plenty of time for me to be a hater next year.
