It has come to my attention that with the release of the latest Thrawn novel we have confirmation of the canon equivalent of peanut butter in the star wars universe
But like all real-world snacks and substances that are found in the galaxy, peanut butter goes by a different name that doesn't necessarily alienate it from its earthly origins
And this name is:
Nutpaste

Thrawn: Ascendancy (Prologue to Chapter 2)
Oh, how I have missed this blue-skinned menace
So wait, Thrawn is essentially a local yokel who made good? (Maybe. Or as Thrawn would say, “Perhaps.” We don’t have the full backstory on Thrawn’s initiation into the Mith family quite yet.) This being said, NO WONDER he hones in on fellow Local Yokel Eli Vanto years later.
Compare and contrast the Chiss and the Jedi and their concepts of found/assigned family, hierarchy, and Councils. I’m not sure if Zahn is going for this comparison, but it does stick out to me, especially as it relates to Third Sight/Skywalkers and their Keepers. (Is it better for a Force Sensitive to not be attached to a single person as their main caretaker, even if the Chiss do lose their Force sensitivity by age 13? Hmmmmmmm....)
You know, for a long time I thought all the Chiss spoke in that affected manner Thrawn does but it turns out he’s just a singular asshole and the Chiss in general have the same variety of accents and inflections as the rest of the galaxy.
Zahn going hard on Thrawn’s seeming inability to play politics and his unique moral code.
How is he going to earn the “do” in Mitth'raw'nuruodo? Stay tuned, loyal readers.
So the Navigator has a “tap-click” game on her tablet? I love space names for what is probably Chiss Fruit Ninja.
Speaking of which - nutpaste sandwich. Hahahahahahahaha
Best moment thus far:
Ar’alani: <sends holomessage> Thrawn, what the hell are you doing? Get your ship back in the battle where it’s supposed to be!
Thrawn: <read: 10:36pm>
“No reply.” You jerk, Thrawn. No wonder Ar’alani was less than pleased to see him in Treason. She’s been dealing with this shit for years.
And of course, it wouldn’t be a Thrawn story without him coming up some half-baked plan that turns out to be genius and thus earns the begrudging respect of some skeptical member of his fleet.
New drinking game: take a shot every time someone says “Perhaps” in an enigmatic manner. You probably won’t make it through the end of the chapter.
Totally worth it to snuff up a headful of ash for an hour and half on a run to listen to this. I forgot how unintentionally comedic the Thrawn books tend to be I cackled LOUDLY at several busy intersections.

Realized that I didn't have a strong sense of time/place for Nora's Return.
I've got an inkling now.
The country has one very large forest and one smaller (but still large) one. That said, logging is not an industry. They don't have a forest god or anything, but they have a respect for the trees. Ships are wooden, but the choosing of trees is very ceremonial.
Instead of wood, they use concrete (which they call molded stone), maladon (nutshells mixed with resin; usually called 'nutpaste'), and ceramics. They don't have glass naturally and tend to import it from overseas. Large sheets of glass break, so they tend to only import smaller pieces. This means large glass doors are actually mosaics of glass. Large mirrors tend to be polished steel, but smaller mirrors are silvered glass. (They can import some material needed for making glass, but the suppliers regulate it heavily and glassblowing/etc is a rare profession in the area. Large glass windows and mirrors do exist, but they're rare and very expensive).
(Paper is from paper mulberries, probably. Maybe from crop cast-offs? Or both and one is more fine/expensive than the other. Point is--it doesn't come from felling trees).
Time-wise, they're in an age of scientific discovery. Rich folk host scholars. People gather in public spaces to share ideas. Electricity is a thing, but not yet widespread. People are still working on making it practical. Guilds are vying for greater control, an effort that is both helped and hindered by the growing stock exchange.
Medicine is mostly past the humors-stage, but not quite to germ theory yet--at least not in Astelan. To the south, Creldyn is the center of medical advancement (greatly because they don't burn their dead or have any strictures against handling dead flesh). (I think, in Astelan, a person's blood is drained and their body burned. Then their blood and ashes are used to fertilize the forest or important field).
