Get ready to spread some holiday cheer, because the most wonderful time of the year is here! The greatness of Black Christmas music is one of the things that remains the same even in a period of unprecedented changes.

The right playlist can make virtual and/or socially distant celebrations feel reminiscent of life pre-COVID-19 pandemic. 

And there’s a melody for everyone, too. Adorable jingles acclaim the innocence of young children. Soulful records offer encouragement in a time of despair. Sweet ballads fuel romance. Comforting holiday-themed tracks uplift the brokenhearted. Unique recreations of traditional carols highlight the religious aspect of the holiday. There are even festive records with sultry requests for Santa.

The greatness of Black Christmas music isn’t limited to our personal preferences either. At their best, these classics have landed at the top of the charts and have influenced the way people commemorate the season every year.

2.  Boyz II Men Featuring Brian McKnight “Let It Snow”

What’s the festive season without a little romance? Boyz II Men and Brian McKnight’s “Let It Snow” honored the “joyous thing” that is love. The collaborative effort peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 2012.

3. Destiny’s Child “8 Days of Christmas”

The chart-topping trio celebrated the early 2000s and all of its millennium glory by asking their “baby” to give them CDs, belly rings and a “crop jacket with dirty denim jeans” on “8 Days of Christmas.”

4. Donny Hathaway “This Christmas”

Donny Hathaway unknowingly delivered a Black Christmas anthem with “This Christmas.” According to American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), it was the 30th most-performed holiday song of all time. Aretha Franklin, Chris Brown, Mary J. Blige, John Legend and Ne-Yo are among the singers who’ve recreated the classic tune.

5. Eartha Kitt “Santa Baby”

Eartha Kitt came under fire after the suggestive tone of “Santa Baby” led to boycotts following its 1953 release. According to Billboard,songwriter Philip Springer called the sultry sensation “the first sexy Christmas record.”

6. Ella Fitzgerald “Frosty the Snowman”

The First Lady of Song’s “Frosty the Snowman” rendition served up a jazz swing that made her cover one for the ages.

7. The Jackson 5 “Give Love on Christmas Day”

While most holiday songs focus on the act of giving, this number by The Jackson 5 shines a light on what’s really important. “What the world needs is love. Yes, the world needs your love,” they sang.

8. The Jackson 5 “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”

Filled with holiday hit after hit, The Jackson 5 Christmas Album spent four weeks at No.1 on Billboard magazine’s special Christmas Charts. It went on to sell more than 3.5 million copies worldwide. “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” is one of the album’s standout tracks.

9. Kirk Franklin & The Family “Jesus Is The Reason For The Season”

Back in 1996, Kirk Franklin & The Family set the record straight about why they were celebrating. If you listen closely, you may hear familiar voices like that of David and Tamela Mann.

15. Run-D.M.C. “Christmas in Hollis”

Heralded as hip-hop’s earliest mainstream holiday song, “Christmas in Hollis” almost wasn’t recorded. According to The Source, D.M.C. expressed his apprehension about the project to fellow group members, Rev. Run and Jam Master Jay. “Nope. We’re not doing it. That’s what they try to do to hip-hop. They commercialize you and try to make you corny,” he reportedly said. Fortunately, the trio reconsidered and celebrated the single’s 33-year release in November.

16. Stevie Wonder “Someday at Christmas”

Released in the midst of the Vietnam War, “Someday at Christmas” delivered a hopeful message filled with social and political themes. Stevie Wonder imagined what life could be without conflict and with the possibility of a “world where men are free.”

17. The Supremes “My Favorite Things”

“My Favorite Things” recounts The Supremes’ most memorable wintertime moments and how they recall them to fight through bad days.

18. The Temptations “Silent Night”

There are many renditions of this time-honored treasure, but The Temptations’ cover of “Silent Night” is now the standard. The Temptations Christmas Card was a unique release because it gave each member of the legendary group the opportunity to lead a popular Christmas song.

19. TLC “Sleigh Ride”

TLC put a unique spin on music  for the festive season with the release of “Sleigh Ride.” The lively single offered Christmas greetings and well-wishes for the new year in a way that only the trio could. JAMES BRANDON LEWIS: “FOR MAHALIA WITH LOVE”

Il titolo dell’ultimo straordinario lavoro di James Brandon Lewis e del suo “Quintet” lascia pochi dubbi e, se qualcuno ne avesse, potrà facilmente fugarli ascoltando questo disco. “For Mahalia with Love” è un magnifico omaggio di Brandon Lewis alla memoria della grandissima Mahalia Jackson, regina del Gospel, come fu soprannominata. Ma questo omaggio contiene in sè qualcosa di molto più intimo e profondo perché mediato dal ricordo che di Mahalia conservava la nonna di James Brandon Lewis e che è riportato nel retro della copertina, sotto forma di una struggente lettera del musicista a Mahalia. Scrive Brandon Lewis: “…Mahalia, mi sono innamorata di te dal giorno in cui mia nonna mi ha parlato di te, perché tutto ciò che la nonna menziona deve essere speciale. Le nonne occupano un posto speciale nel cuore e nella mente dei bambini. Ricordi tutto della nonna: cosa cucinava, cosa indossava, le sue parole di saggezza, l'odore della sua casa... “ Insomma un amore con salde radici e che viene da lontano. In questi casi, quando l’omaggio non è una occasione posticcia o una piccola convenienza, il risultato si sente subito nella musica ed é un meccanismo quasi automatico: così accade appena poggiato il dito sul tasto “play” e nelle cuffie si accendono le prime note di “Sparrow”, solenne introduzione e chiaro omaggio a “His Eyeis Is on the Sparrow”, composta da Charles H. Gabriel, e a “Even the Sparrow” dello stesso Brandon Lewis. La magia del sentire musicale di Mahalia Jackson sembra già manifestarsi forte e potente. “…Il suo occhio è sul piccolo passero…” diceva la canzone, riferito all’occhio di Gesù, e proseguiva “…Canto perché la mia anima è felice/Canto perché sono libera/Per il suo occhio sul piccolo vecchio passero/E so che sta vegliando su di me e su di te…” Come rendere al meglio la spiritualità e la profonda umanità di questi versi se non con l’amorevole sax di Brandon Lewis, accompagnato dalla cornetta di Kirk Knuffke e sostenuto dalla batteria di Chad Taylor? Anche in questa versione strumentale, con buona pace di De Gregori, gli uccellini non sono “soli nel sole”, ma sono protetti dal Signore e, senza un profondo senso religioso, se non si riesce a comprendere Mahalia Jackson, non si riesce nemmeno a comprendere la gioiosa religiosità nella musica di Brandon Lewis. Con “Swing low” potremmo percorrere un viale del Louis Armstrong Park di New Orleans dove si profila da lontano il “Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts”; brano godibile e pieno zeppo di riferimenti allo swing e al vitalismo della black music. Cambiano i ritmi ma non cambiano le atmosfere sia con “Go Down Moses” fitto e dialogante, sia con “Wade in the Water”, con il suggestivo sottofondo delle percussioni di Taylor. “Calvary” è invece un dolente lamento religioso incentrato sulla sofferenza di Gesù che altro non è che la sofferenza del mondo. Chissà come sarebbe una Via Crucis con questo accompagnamento, dove il contorcimento degli animi e le inquietudini, come possono essere quelli dei sofferenti, prendono qui corpo nella musica. Orchestrazione completa e corposa dove trova spazio anche il violoncello di Chris Hoffman e il contrabbasso di William Parker. “Deep River” ci riporta a sonorità più intense e con tanto spazio per gli assoli, mentre la seguente “Eljia Rock” fa diretto riferimento al profeta Elia che, per la tradizione ebraica non morì, ma fu assunto in cielo con anima e corpo e quindi in diretto riferimento alla figura di Gesù tanto cara a Mahalia. L’immanenza del Signore (ma forse anche di Mahalia), è richiamata nel titolo di “Were You There”. Il lavoro si conclude con una magnifica versione rivisitata di “Precious Lord Take my Hand”, brano che la Jackson cantò all’insediamento di Kennedy alla Casa Bianca. Un disco che omaggia giustamente la regina del gospel, ricorda l’amata nonna di Brandon ma che, naturalmente, splende di luce propria e che non si smetterebbe mai di ascoltare.

Conoce a los colaboradores del álbum en solitario de RM: Erykah Badu, Anderson .Paak, Tablo, Mahalia y Paul Blanco

La expectación por el álbum Índigo de RM aumenta, no sólo porque es su primer lanzamiento en solitario que no es una mixtape, sino también por la lista de músicos colaboradores que ya se ha dado a conocer. Con tantos músicos que colaboran -desde leyendas de la escena musical estadounidense hasta artistas independientes de Corea- es difícil especular cómo sonará el álbum. En vísperas del lanzamiento de Indigo el 2 de diciembre, los críticos musicales Kim Doheon y Kang Ilkwon nos aclaran los colaboradores del álbum en esta serie de dos partes. Si aún no has tenido la oportunidad de leer el artículo de ayer, consulta la primera parte.

Erykah Badu ("Yun (con Erykah Badu)") ¿Por dónde empezar con alguien tan grande como Erykah Badu? Empecemos por su singular nombre. Al igual que su música, el nombre de Erykah Badu es profundo y fascinante, ya que incorpora el término egipcio "kah", que significa el ser interior, así como su sonido de scat de jazz favorito, "badu". No es exagerado decir que su obra es una mezcla ecléctica de géneros, que parte del R&B/soul e incluye el jazz, el hip hop y el alternativo. Sus trabajos se adelantan a veces, y llegan al pasado en otras, mostrando tanto las raíces como el futuro del género.

Estuvo a la vanguardia del movimiento neo soul, una nueva tendencia del R&B a mediados de los 90, lo que le valió el título de Reina del Neo Soul. Mahalia ("Closer (con Pablo Blanco, Mahalia)" A diferencia de otros lugares del mundo, la mayoría de los artistas de R&B/soul del Reino Unido no se han visto terriblemente afectados por las tendencias de la industria musical estadounidense. Aunque las técnicas de canto que se escuchaban en las canciones lentas de mediados de los 90 han desaparecido en gran medida, Mahalia sigue basando su voz en el R&B tradicional.

Pero eso no significa que su música esté anticuada. Sus canciones recuerdan en gran medida al rap melódico de finales de los 90 y principios de los 2000. Dale una escucha a su segundo álbum, LOVE AND COMPROMISE (2019), para hacerte una idea de lo que es. El paisaje sonoro y los arreglos mantienen la atención y las melodías dan vida a las canciones. Es el tipo de álbum en el que puedes sumergirte poco a poco en lugar de dejar que se lance a tus oídos desde el primer momento. Paul Blanco ("Closer (con Paul Blanco, Mahalia)") El hip hop coreano es conocido actualmente por su estilo de rap cantado, que hace hincapié en el flujo melódico, y Paul Blanco se encuentra entre los mejores artistas de la escena y del estilo en la actualidad. Es muy bueno produciendo, rapeando y cantando, y se siente tan a gusto haciendo trap como haciendo R&B alternativo. it’s funny you brought up love songs, I been thinking ab one directions love song compiled with titles of famous love songs and one of the last songs of the chorus is irreplaceable by beyonce…. like, you got the spirit but you’re so soo wrong

(my top love songs include so into you- tamia (the original), differences- ginuwine, stickwitu- pussycat dolls, icu- coco, until the end of time- justin timberlake and beyonce, november- mahalia, second to none- daley, evergreen- yebba, i’ve got a question- naked brothers band, turning page- sleeping at last in case that gives you any insight to what I personally would constitute for love songs, typically about how life changing this love has been, or how they’ve been completely rewired by this love that they’ve received, hope this helps!)- 💌

i think the only one i heard in this list is stickwitu because i had a pcd phase a couple years back and was so in love with nicole scherzinger so i listened to all of their hits and that was one of them. i will listen to the rest of the songs tho!

never had a 1D phase (i always feel like i missed out) so i have not heard that 1D song but i HAVE heard irreplaceable by ms carter many many times. i grew up thinking it was by alicia keys for some reason and i remember finding out it was by beyoncé and being like :o bc i SWORE up and down it was by alicia keys 😭😭

Cansados após um longo dia de marcha e discursos inflamados para uma multidão de 200 mil pessoas, alguns começaram a deixar o local do evento. Martin era o último dos dez oradores e poderia ter sido apenas um a mais. Os que falaram antes tinham se destacado por mensagens muito diretas e realistas. Martin começou do mesmo jeito, mas logo viu que não estava funcionando. Foi quando uma cantora, Mahalia Jackson, fez com que ele entendesse a situação: “Fale sobre o sonho, Martin.” E Martin Luther King Jr. pronunciou um dos discursos mais relevantes da história. Só algumas palavras para o trazer à memória: “Eu tenho um sonho: que um dia esta nação se levantará e viverá o verdadeiro significado de sua crença. Nós celebraremos estas verdades e elas serão claras para todos, que os homens são criados iguais. Non riesco a capire perché quando sono sul palco o in uno studio televisivo e sto lavorando con dei bianchi, tutti non fanno che abbracciarmi e dirmi che sono fantastica, eccetera. Quando poi cammino per la strada come una persona qualunque, nessuno mi riconosce. E giù al Sud, quando entro in un grande magazzino, non posso nemmeno comprare un sandwich e una bibita gassata. O a chiamare un taxi. Eppure sono sempre la stessa Mahalia Jackson che tutti quanti continuano a definire meravigliosa e fantastica. Perché c’è chi si comporta in questo modo? Non capisco. Insomma, la mia gente merita rispetto. Sentire un bianco che dice «figliolo» al tuo compagno, a tuo marito o a tuo fratello fa veramente schifo. È una mancanza di rispetto. Tutti sono esseri umani allo stesso modo. Trattare gli altri in questa maniera è segno della più bieca ignoranza.

Mahalia Jackson, la Regina del Gospel, è stata una delle più grandi protagoniste della musica del ventesimo secolo.

Ha vinto tre Grammy Awards e alcuni suoi brani sono stati inseriti nella Grammy Hall of Fame.

Dotata di una voce dallo stile inconfondibile e dal forte impatto emotivo, aveva un timbro possente e una grande estensione oltre a notevoli capacità interpretative che riuscivano a commuovere chi la ascoltava. 

Ha incarnato il gospel moderno come espressione di un puro slancio liberatorio, di una schietta, incontaminata devozione al divino combinata a una letizia tutta terrena e palpabile. 

Il suo contralto di straordinaria vastità, tonante di elegante irruenza, insieme sacrale e sanguigno, ha riassunto tensioni e emozioni, fantasia, dolore e speranze dell’esperienza afro-americana del Novecento. Echeggiava i blues di Bessie Smith ma anche il primo jazz di Storyville, pulsava dei ritmi danzanti della second line delle parate di New Orleans, disegnando le più assorte e ariose melodie degli inni tradizionali. Era a suo agio accompagnata dal piano scabro e percussivo di un’umile chiesa pentecostale, come nella policroma coralità orchestrale di Duke Ellington.

Iconica attivista del movimento per i diritti civili, si è esibita alla Marcia su Washington il 28 agosto 1963. 

Nacque col nome di Mahala Jackson il 26 ottobre 1911, a New Orleans, in una famiglia povera e molto devota, che viveva in una baracca. Aveva solo cinque anni quando venne affidata alle cure di una zia perché sua madre, Charity Clark, era morta.

Già a quattro anni cantava nel coro giovanile della chiesa del padre, John Jackson scaricatore di porto, barbiere e pastore Battista.

Arrivata a Chicago da adolescente, sull’onda del portentoso flusso migratorio dal Meridione al Nord industriale, il suo talento ha preso forma e la sua arte ha acquistato gradualmente risonanza e prestigio. Nella metropoli, definita il Vaticano del gospel, la sua voce imponente e dinamica, ha contribuito a illustrare, per le congregazioni battiste degli anni Trenta, l’innovativo e ispirato repertorio del suo mentore Thomas A. Dorsey, grande pianista e compositore che veniva  dal blues, e a gettare le basi per l’affermazione del gospel moderno e della nuova vocalità religiosa afro-statunitense.

Dopo aver svolto tanti lavori e cantato in vari cori religiosi, il suo primo brano da solista, Oh My Lord, è uscito nel 1937. 

Il disco che l’ha fatta conoscere al grande pubblico,  Move On Up A Little Higher, inciso nel 1947 per l’Apollo Records, è stato il singolo di gospel più venduto della storia. Sull’onda di questo strepitoso successo ha iniziato a entrare nei più celebri studi televisivi e fatto tour in giro per il mondo.

Nel 1954 ha anche condotto un programma evangelico sulla CBS TV.

In seguito alla sua memorabile esibizione al Newport Jazz Festival è stato tratto Mahalia Jackson: Live at Newport – Columbia 1958 il suo album di maggior successo commerciale.

Negli anni sessanta è stata in prima linea nel movimento per i diritti civili dei neri d’America. Alla marcia su Washington, si è esibita con I’ve Been ‘Buked and I’ve Been Scorned, davanti a 250.000 persone. Cinque anni dopo, ai funerali di Martin Luther King, ha cantato Take My Hand, Precious Lord e scoraggiata, ha abbandonato l’impegno attivo nel movimento.

Dopo essere stata più volte ricoverata per diversi problemi di salute, ha tenuto il suo ultimo concerto nel 1971 a Monaco, in Germania. È morta di infarto il 27 gennaio 1972 a Chicago.

Al suo servizio funebre, davanti a 50.000 persone, Aretha Franklin  le ha dedicato Take My Hand, Precious Lord.

Nel 1993, la città di New Orleans le ha intitolato il teatro situato all’interno del Louis Armstrong Park, ribattezzato “Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Performing Arts”.
