Review of Saturday May 6: North Carolina Courage VS. Portland Thorns.

Week 6 on the Season

And so it seems at least some of the other 11 teams in the NWSL are catching up to the generative chemistry made apparent in the Portland Thorns’ first two weeks of the NWSL. 

The Portland Thorns, full disclosure, are one of my favorite teams. What’s not to like? The possession-based style of play, the edgy nerd jerseys.

But my preference for the Thorns in this matchup could be in some part because I don’t know as much about the southern teams: Houston Dash, KC Current, Racing  Louisville, and the Orlando Pride, and ever less the case, North Carolina Courage. Getting the bug for North Carolina was another bonus of this exciting game.

 We’re seeing North Carolina build chemistry with each completed pass, every fruitful high press. The first two weeks of the NWSL, commentators compulsively sang praises of Kerolín, even when she hardly got passes let alone generated threats on goal. I felt like the commentators were trying to tell me what to think, which is how my boyfriend tells me he feels about politics. But this week the Kerolín hype clicked for me. That sweet read of the field to nestle herself between the Thorns’ defensive and midfielder lines, her foot skills and cheeky inventiveness, her honed shot curling into the goal. She makes everybody step up their game and it’s sick. 

On the other side, Sophia Smith’s wizarding change of pace, despite not being “into wizards,” (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3RBqfUU9-Y for the reference) made the North Carolina defense look a lot more foolish than they actually are. Her timing game is extremely cunning. But there were some areas in North Carolina where Smith’s relative inexperience showed. From this game she could work on her first touch, being a little bit tougher on the ball, and precision with her finishes. 

Klinengberg’s hip fakes on the ball and deft defensive shuffling allowed her to keep up with the shiftiest of strikers. Crystal Dunn still gets my attention every game with her versatility in being whatever type of menace her team needs. You need a finisher? Crystal Dunn. Astute lunge-free defending? Crystal Dunn. A central stalwart who shapes play well enough to prevent counterattacks and build from the mid? Dunn. I’m getting annoyingly repetitive, but I like her as a winger, too. 

Back to North Carolina. Wingate’s endline run, set up by Kerolin, and then slipped through to Pickett for the gorgeous goal bringing NC up 3-2 in the 70th minute. Narumi, O’Sullivan, Fox all had great performances. 

But in the 84th minute, Olivia Moultrie brought the Thorns to parity. And what a shot. Curling left post. Clear vision and execution after a delicious run by Kuikka. 

The game ended as a tie and I’ll be watching both of these sides closely going forward. 

Will Sophia Smith tighten up those touches? Will Olivia Moultrie start getting a little more time on the pitch? Will the Thorns get Sauerbrunn back soon, and if not, how will they reassess their defensive organization? 

For the Courage, what lies ahead as the chemistry deepens, especially between Wingate and Kerolin? Will Kerolin be able to gain confidence in a way that builds her entire team’s confidence? Will Denise O’Sullivan continue in this daunting form?

phoebe inviting jamie to uncle's day has me cackling. imagine tiny phoebe ringing up afc richmond and asking for jamie tartt's number because she needs to invite him to her uncle roy's party. peak comedy.

Just realizing now that Phoebe wrapped her tie dye shirt for Roy in EGG WRAPPING PAPER. Which also happens to match Roy’s egg socks, which could very well also have come from Phoebe. I simply adore the idea that this small child, when trying to decide on a gift for her uncle, asked herself “well what does he like?” and her gut answer was “EGGS.” And then she runs with it for years.
