This is a fun little AU for "The Runt" that me and @slutforsnow talked about last night.

This one-shot includes an OC that does not belong to me, but rather belongs to the person I mentioned just now ^^^^

(I can't remember where I got the gif from, it's been downloaded on my laptop for a while but from what I can remember it was google?)

This one-shot is also heavily based off of a scene in Instant Family

Laurie was a kid from the foster care system that Violet and Billy have been fostering for almost a year. In recent months, Laurie has been re-connecting with her biological mother ever since she got out of rehab and has been trying to persue reunification.

And the court determined that it was safe for Laurie to go back home and live with her mom again. Even though Billy and Vi were both crushed for many reasons, one of them being that they were not able to read their newer court statement that they had written about Laurie. But, they also couldn't help but feel happy for the young girl, she had been through so much and she truy did deserve this.

The day Laurie was to go home came, and the girl found herself waiting by the front door eagerly when Violet and Billy approached her with somber looks on their faces.

"Hey," Vi said, sitting on the arm of the couch as Laurie turned to look at her.

"Hi," Laurie said back, also smiling a little bit. Laurie was also heartbroken to be leaving the couple that had been caring for her for almost exactly a year. But at the same time, she was overjoyed to be reunited with her mama.

"We wanted to give you the new court statement that we couldn't read, just so that you have it," Billy began as he handed Laurie a folded piece of paper. The little red-headed girl took the note, looking at the folded paper.

"Yeah...," Laurie's voice trailed off when she heard the sound of a car pulling up and she looked at the door, noticing a car stopping in front of the house she had called home for a long time. "Mom's here."

Laurie grabbed her duffel bag and slung it over her shoulder before she opened the front door and walked outside with Vi and Billy trailing off behind her. Two women climbed out of the car, Laurie knew them as Elizabeth and Michelle - the two people who were in charge of finding her placements and such.

But there was no sign of Laurie's mother.

"Are you guys just picking me up?," Laurie asked as she approached the two women, who both looked very upset and empathtic. "Where's mom?" Laurie had a sinking feeling in her stomach as her movements slowed.

Billy and Vi immediately knew what had happened by the looks on the women's faces. This couldn't be good, at all

"She was supposed to meet us but she didn't show up," Michelle said carefully. "We got worried so we went to check on her and she said to tell you that she was very ashamed and that she was sorry. She said she can't do it."

"But that doesn't make any sense - she filled out all of the paperwork," Laurie denied, her voice shaking a little bit as she glanced between the women. "She said that she could do it why would she..."

"Lauren, she said that you were the one who filled out the paperwork," Elizabeth explained.

"Okay, maybe I was there when it was being helped but why does that matter?," Laurie argued .

"She said that it felt like she was being forced to do something she wasn't up for," Elizabeth told her.

"No." Tears blurred the 13-year-old's vision as her voice cracked. "That isn't right - she's ready - I know she is - just... just let me talk to her and.. and I can go home..." Tears dripped down the child's cheeks as a full on breakdown threatened to take place.

"I'm sorry, Lauren. But while we were talking to her, her pupils were wider than saucers. She's using the meth again, honey," Michelle told her empatheticaly. "She's not coming for you, baby."

Billy and Vi exchanged looks, both of them felt absolutely horrible for the poor girl in front of them.

Laurie felt like her entire heart shattered into a million pieces as she realized her mother had chosen drugs over her once again. She looked back at Billy and Vi with a small sob before she took off like a rabbit down the street, quietly sobbing as she ran. She could hear Billy and Vi running after her, calling out for her but she didn't look back. She just kept on running until she came to the park, climbing the large weeping willow tree.

"Laurie," Billy called, staring up into the tree and at the crying teen who sat on a tall branch.

"Please just go away, you're not my real parents," Laurie hiccuped, sobs wracking her body as she hid her face.

"You're right, we're not your real mother and father. But we are here," Vi said, hoping to talk the teenager down from the tree. "And we love you."

"Wha...?," Laurie whispered, somewhat scoffing as she wiped her tear stained face. "No you don't. You don't even know a single thing about me. I'm just another mouth to feed."

"Laurie, honey...," Vi said, "We do know you. We know how scared you are of pigeons, but weirdly enough still throw bread crumbs for them and call us to rescue you when they surround you. We know how you sometimes struggle with reading. And we know that you use your drawings as a form of self expression and how it feels for you to be in the system. We know how you keep track of the weird things your friends say via the notes app on your phone."

"And we know that the most important thing in the world to youis family and reducing the poaching of Sumatran tigers," Billy jumped in. Laurie didn't move from her spot in the tree, their words only making the tears flow harder as she realized that this couple below her has done more for her in a year than her mother did for her whole life. "And Vi and me know that there is a lot that we still need to get to know about you, kid, but if you think we can't handle you, or that we won't be able to handle the scary stuff. We can. We can handle them and we love you, Laurie."

"Stop saying that, please just stop saying that, please," Laurie sobbed, huggging her knees as she continued to cry. "Please just leave me alone, guys, please just go."

Vi and Billy exchanged looks, realizing that what Laurie needed right now was space. They walked away and sat at a bench, waiting for the kid to calm down.

Laurie did eventually come down, slowly approachig them. Dried tears staining her cheeks as the couple stood up.

"I did some thinking," Laurie began, her voice still shaky from the crying. "And I think that what's best is that I ask Michelle and Elizabeth for another placement, because I know the little kids were more of what you were looking for when you got into this and -"

"No," Billy cut in firmly.

"Billy, I know that you feel real fucking sorry for me right now, but -," Laurie began, only to be cut off again.

"It has nothing to do with what just happend, Laurie," Vi told her, "Where's the court statement Billy gave to you?"

Laurie hesitated for a moment before she pulled the paper from her pocket, unfolding it as Vi pointed to a specific passage on the statment. "Read that."

Laurie inhaled shakily, feeling another onslaught of tears coming up as she began to read. "Laurie asked us why we did this, why did we choose to take her in? Sadly, at the time of that question. Neither of us knew the answer to that. But we do know it now. We did it because there was a missing piece in our lives and we couldn't figure out what it was." Laurie sharply inhaled as she read the next words, tears dripping down her cheeks. "It turns out, that the missing piece we were looking for was Laurie..."

By now, even Billy and Vi were getting a little bit emotional as they watched their little girl in front of them.

"Do you see now, Laurie?," Vi whispered, "You were our missing piece, kid."

Laurie sobbed, lowering the court statement as she wiped her face before hugging her foster parents, crying as she felt them return the hug. The three of them just stood there quietly, hugging each other.

Laurie had finally found the family that she deserved.

The drama club goes on a weekend trip. Everyone becomes a bit closer.

Violet stepped onto the bus, adjusting the strap of her backpack—even though she wasn’t hauling her overnight bag with her anymore, she barely felt any lighter. Roman hadn’t met her in front of the bus like he promised, and the time she spent waiting came to bite her in the ass now that she was among the last to get on and not a single row of seats was empty. 

Fuck.

Now she needed someone to sit next to. Someone she barely knew, whose name she had probably already forgotten and who would ignore her or (even worse) talk to her the whole ride. Great.

She smiled at Logan—sat near the front, his wheelchair folded beside him—and he gave her a nod and a smile in return before focusing on his book again. Then Violet looked up, scanning the seats ahead and immediately found Roman, squished in the three seats of the back row with five other people, his boisterous laughter audible through the entire bus as he found himself on the losing end of a tickle fight. Violet sighed.

This would be a long trip.

Her eyes darted from seat to seat—there had to be somewhere she could sit. She cursed herself for only ever talking to Logan or Roman, for her face blindness, for always being the new girl who came in after everyone else and didn’t have a chance to make friends. The only people she could imagine sitting next to were already preoccupied, with the exception of Penny, maybe, but Penny was…

...waving at her. Violet jumped at the realisation, glancing behind her—no, Penny wasn’t looking at anyone else (as was backed by her calling Violet’s name before patting the free seat next to her; God, how embarrassing).

Hesitantly, Violet sat down. Okay, Vi, be cool. “Hey.”

“You made it!” Penny beamed at her, shining like the sun (brighter than the sun, even; it was annoyingly overcast) and her broad grin complemented her make-up of the day: blue, pink and white freckles scattered over her cheeks along with her real ones and eyeshadow to match. Being cool was going to be a challenge.

Violet hummed. “Your make-up looks cute,” she said casually. Roman’s voice (“Stay calm; make conversation; act natural”) echoed in her thoughts and she shoved it to the back of her mind.

“Thank you!” Penny said, an excited sparkle in her blue-rimmed eyes. “Today’s the trans day of visibility; I thought I’d make myself a little more, well, visible in turn.”

“Oh!” Violet said, then “oh,” again when the words reached her brain. “You’re…”

Penny’s smile changed—it was strained, the desperate look in her eyes one Violet knew all too well: Waiting for a reaction; praying they won’t say anything wrong; please-God-let-it-be-okay. “Yep! That’s, uh… that’s okay, right?” And there was something else in her face; past the fear of transphobia, a tiny heartbreak was waiting to happen—though Violet couldn’t figure out why.

“Yeah!” Violet said quickly. “Yeah, of course it’s okay—I’m… I’m non-binary, actually. A demigirl.” She gave Penny a reassuring smile despite the anxiety closing around her heart (aside from her online friends, only two other people knew about the gender thing) and relief began to wash Penny’s worry away.

Then relief made way for shock—Penny slapped her hands over her mouth. “Goodness gracious, have I been using the wrong pronouns all this time?”

“Oh, no—I use she and they; it, uh, depends on the day, kinda.”

“Oh.” Penny visibly relaxed.

The bus started moving and they both startled, Penny grabbing onto Violet’s arm to stop herself from slamming back into the seat, which only made Violet tense more. As Penny sat down properly (though her legs were still crossed, her pink skirt draped over her knees), she didn’t quite let go, their arms brushing together on the armrest between them. Cool, calm, natural, Violet repeated to herself, just don’t be weird.

“And should I, um—” Penny started, then paused, looking away as she thought. “Should I use ‘girl words’ for you?” She made air quotes with her free hand. “Like, if you and I were—” Softly, she shook her head. “I know it’s silly, but if we were dating—”

Violet forced back a strangled noise. There went cool and calm.

“—would you be my girlfriend or my… joyfriend or partner or datefriend or…?”

“Girlfriend is fine. Would be fine, I mean.” Heat rose to Violet’s face—she laughed awkwardly, brushing her hair behind her ear. And now natural was out the window as well; damn, she was fucking this up quickly. Did that question mean Penny wanted Violet to be her girlfriend? No, definitely not; there was no way someone like Penny could like someone like her. Violet looked away.

“This weekend is gonna be fun!” Penny broke the silence without a hint of awkwardness. “Rehearsals are always really cool; acting just feels different there and—oh, wait, you’re on stage crew.” She tilted her head to the side. “That’s still fun, though, right?”

Violet thought back to Logan’s briefing for the weekend ahead—she had watched three actors (Jo, maybe, then Connor and… fuck, names really weren’t her strong suit) load a metal case the size of a small fridge into the bus while Logan surveyed nervously; they all had quite the weekend ahead of them. “Sure.”

Penny grinned. “And, hey—even if we’re not in the same room, we’ll get to hang out lots! It’ll be great.”

Idly playing with the earbuds hanging from her collar, Violet hummed. “I hope so.”

“I’m sure,” Penny said firmly. Her gaze wandered to Violet’s hand. “What kind of music do you like? No, wait, don’t tell me—My Chemical Romance?”

“How could you guess?” Violet asked dryly, a smile tugging at her lips.

Penny giggled. “C’mon, let’s hear something.” She tapped her nail against Violet’s earbud. “I had an emo phase too; I wanna see if I recognize anything.”

Violet laughed disbelievingly. “You had an emo phase?” She opened her phone, scrolling through her playlists. Too angsty, too sad, too old—there.

“Yep!” Penny chirped. “Black hoodies, messy eyeliner and way too light foundation—I looked like a zombie for a year.” She wrinkled her nose. “But that was before my transition—I’m glad my moms didn’t want to keep those pictures around.”

Violet laughed. Handing Penny an earbud, she shuffled the playlist. “Here—don’t judge me too hard.”

“Don’t worry.” Penny put in the earbud, pausing for a moment—then her eyes lit up with recognition. She smiled and closed them, resting her head on Violet’s shoulder.

It took Violet a second to recover from her initial heart attack—but when she did, she almost relaxed into the touch. The familiar song was comforting, and watching Penny’s lips move in sync with the lyrics made Violet melt like ice cream in the sun. She laid her head on Penny’s (her hair smelled faintly of coconut and vanilla and was wonderfully soft against her cheek) and let the music surround her.

Maybe, just maybe, this trip would be alright after all.

Roman leaned against the headboard, shifting to get comfortable on the bed frame—the mattress was, along with every other mattress aside from Logan’s, on the floor in the centre of the room where the others were sitting. Pulling up his shoulders, Roman stared at his phone screen.

“Come on,” Connor said. Roman ignored him. “We’re finally enough people to play and we need a narrator, Roman, please?”

“Not in the mood.”

“Who’re you texting?” Tyler looked up from the cards he was shuffling. “Can’t you stop talking to your girlfriend for ten minutes?”

Roman made a dismissive noise, checking his notifications.

Janus: Remus said you’re not home - I was hoping to see you tonight, where are you?

“C’mon, leave him alone,” Percy said, elbowing Tyler in the side. “We’ll play Spyfall instead.”

“I’m only playing if Logan isn’t,” Connor joked. “He’s too good; it’s not fair.”

Logan laughed. “Just because you can’t help immersing yourself in your role doesn’t mean it’s unfair if I guess the location instantly.”

Roman tuned out the rest of their bickering, forcing back a smile at his screen—Janus wanted to see him.

You: I'm at this trip for drama 🙄

You: It's fine but I'd rather hang out with you

Janus: I'll come get you, get ready

You: Lol at least let me change first!

Janus: Oh, in your pyjamas already? The cute Disney ones?

Roman could almost hear Janus's light chuckle. He blushed, pulling his knees to his chest.

 Janus: I'm not! I'm being honest, they're very cute

Janus: Really though, you're...

Janus: Very handsome

Janus: (Don't tell Remus I said so, but you're cuter than him)

You: We have the same face though?

You: Also I thought you two are dating or did I get something wrong

Janus: Oh, no - Remus is a good friend, but not my type

Roman bit his lip.

You: What is your type?

Janus took a while to answer—in the meantime Roman scrolled up, reading old messages (Janus was very charming; Roman had spent longer than he cared to admit to anyone texting and even more time thinking about him).

Janus: Pretty boys, bold and artistic. Bonus points for a defined aesthetic (the exact one doesn’t matter, but I’m fond of light palettes with gold)

Janus: Why, what’s yours?

Roman glanced at his red-and-gold jacket on the other side of the bed; thought back to the Instagram posts Janus had gone through and liked and the art and poetry Roman had (very hesitantly) shared. He thought about Janus, tall and refined and smooth as silk, and about Violet, his fake girlfriend.

You: Well my girlfriend’s an emo so edgy types apparently ajsdhfghs

Janus went offline—Roman could have kicked himself; of course he shouldn’t have said that. By Cupid’s misguided arrows, why was he always the one to get into such horrible situations?

Janus: How did you two meet?

You: We have math together lol

How romantic. He wasn’t even trying to sell it, huh?

No. The thought of Janus believing he was straight—no matter how important it was (Janus might tell Remus, after all, and Remus could take the opportunity to snitch on him)—made Roman feel sick.

Janus: I see

Janus: It’s getting late, I should be going - good night, Roman 🤍

The emoji made Roman’s heart flutter—how silly, he berated himself.

You: Goodnight 💞

He shoved his phone in his pocket, stretching before heading for the door—he hadn’t noticed it getting dark out or the others turning off the light, and had to step carefully to avoid tripping over a backpack.

“Where are you going?” Tyler asked from the mattress nest on the floor, his voice slurred with drowsiness.

“Getting some water.”

“Hm. Cool.”

“Night,” Roman said softly, then slipped out of the room.

The rooftop balcony was quiet, just as it always was when Roman came up there—he had discovered it on his first trip here, overgrown, deserted and starlit, and had returned on every trip since. He took a deep breath of the night air, his mind clearing—everything was just like always, down to the chipped paint on the metal table and the cracks in the floor. As he looked around, Roman noticed one difference, though: He wasn’t alone.

Violet was sitting on the stone floor, hugging her knees to her chest and staring up at the sky. When the door fell shut behind Roman, she jumped, hastily wiping her sleeve over her face—then she noticed him and froze.

“Roman?”

🔥 If you request a character that is quite young in the fandom, I will typically age them up to at least the age of a young teen or young adult (12-20) for a dating/romantic X-Reader (if it’s for a platonic or familial X-Reader they can be their canon age). Though how far I age them up depends on what “activities” they are doing. Some examples being if you ask for when they first grow crushes on each other I would probably keep them their canon age or just a tiny bit older. For a soft first kiss scenario I’ll age them up from 12-15. Or if you want something like a make out session, they will be aged up around 16 or older. And of course, for anything NSFW related they will aged up to 18+. The only exception to this rule is if you specifically ask for them to be older than their canon age to fit your story as long as it is fit their actions.

Scarlett instantly wanted her to be in her family and convinced her father to adopt the little mute girl. It took a solid year before Scarlett was able to take Violet home with her and she began raising her with Kenta’s supervision.
