❝ Ivy was well aware that she wasn't the only victim of bullying at McKinley High, but she was also well aware that, unlike most of her fellow victims, she'd never exactly done much to try to blend in. An outspoken feminist who frequently swore in Hawaiian, dressed in a style that was entirely unusual for such a small town as Lima, Ohio, and spent most of her time writing songs and dreaming of being on the Broadway stage, she was prime fodder for cutting words from McKinley's famous Cheerios and facefulls of slushies from the knuckle-dragging jocks, but she always did her best to try and ignore all that. Someday, she knew, she'd get out of this small-minded little town, land a starring role on the Great White Way, and then none of those future gas station attendants would ever have the right to sneer at her again.

And then one day, she'd spied a sign-up sheet that would forever alter her life. After being persuaded by her best friend Mercedes to join Mr. Schuester's new glee club, Ivy had been determined to finally prove to McKinley High's assholes that she was destined for greater things than any of them - and, hopefully, show up her longtime rival Rachel Berry along the way. Instead, she'd gained a few friends, her relationship with Rachel had mellowed if it hadn't exactly turned friendly, and she found she no longer cared half as much about proving herself.

But that was sophomore year. Now a junior, Ivy, along with the rest of the New Directions, is right back to being at the bottom of McKinley's food chain, ridiculed and slushied as often as she's looked at. But there is something different about this year. This year, McKinley has a new student, Sam Evans, who, in addition to being infuriatingly good-looking and sweet, can sing like the stupid blond cherub he is. And, perhaps most surprisingly, he seems interested in Ivy.

Ivy has always sworn, to herself and anybody who would listen, that she'll never date a jock or cheerleader as long as she lives. But Sam really is sweet... and maybe the two of them just might be able to make a perfect harmony. ❞

Here's something to consider: if Ivy and Thea were both actual characters on Glee, what would their relationship be like? Would they have been friends before joining New Directions, and if not, would they become friends after? Would they ever do a duet (I kind hope so, because I think Taylor and Auli'i's voices would blend amazingly), and if so, what song? Would they support each other's relationships and offer each other advice, or do you think one of them would think the other could do better?

You don't have to answer any of these, of course, just some things to consider.

Okay, so I definitely think the two of them would deeply respect one another in the beginning. Thea would admire Ivy’s outspoken feminism while Ivy would love Thea’s ability to be straightforward w/o being mean. That would be the foundation for their friendship, which grows when they both realize they write their own songs and can’t STAND Will Schuester.

Now, when Glee Club begins, Ivy respects that Thea refuses to join because she doesn’t really like to sing in front of people she doesn’t know and Mr. Schue. However, she is surprised that Thea decides to join only as a band member because Finn Hudson begged her to join. That causes a little friction between them due to Thea not telling her she and Finn were friends, but Ivy would move on because their friendship is more important.

I could see Ivy being the only one able to convince Thea to sing a song with her in the beginning, and it would honestly be so cool if they sung a song by the Chicks like Goodbye Earl. They…would…KILL it!

In regards to relationships, Thea just wants Ivy to be happy, so she would support her in any relationship unless if they are being dicks. As for Ivy, I think after she gets over that crush she has on Finn, she would absolutely be Team Dorinn (their ship name). Ivy can see how Thea makes Finn better and vice versa. Plus, she also just wants her friend to be happy as well.

The meaning of their name: Ivy is of English and Latin origin, and means “vine”.

Something they've never told anyone: That when she was seven years old, she brought a snake she’d found in her family’s backyard into the house, hoping to keep it as a pet, only for it to get loose. Her father eventually found it and freaked out, but everyone assumed it must have gotten in on its own, and, not wanting to get in trouble, Ivy never admitted that she’d brought it into the house.

Their best friend: The one and only Mercedes Jones.

Their favorite trip (if they've ever been on one): The trip to New York the New Directions made in season two. Even though it didn’t wind up panning out like anyone hoped, stepping foot in the city where she hoped to one day make it big for the first time was enough for Ivy to consider the whole thing worth it.

What they would name their future child (even hypothetical ones): Roxy for a girl, Keller for a boy.

Would they consider going onto a game/talent show on TV? If so, which one have they always had in mind?: Ivy would probably go on American Idol, if not to actually win then for the exposure it might afford her for future theatre prospects. There’s also a good chance that her family might at least apply to go on Family Feud, even if they don’t make it on.

Have they ever done something stupid to try and impress someone?: Definitely not - Ivy has too much self-respect, and she’d never be willing to go against her principles just to impress someone else.

Something they collect: Vinyl records of Broadway musical soundtracks. She has a pretty good collection going by now.

Their theme song: “Let Me Be Your Star” from the show Smash.

If they get sick easily or not: Her immune system isn’t terrible, but she definitely gets sick more frequently than she would like.

Their go-to destination for a day trip: Going shopping somewhere she’s not very familiar with, so she can really explore and discover new things in the stores.

If they've ever worked a summer job, what was it was: Her part-time job as a barista at the Lima Bean actually started out as a summer job she took after her freshman year at McKinley, but they offered her a part-time position shortly before school started back up and she couldn’t turn the money down.

Last year's Halloween costume: She and Mercedes did a Wicked best friends-couple costume; Ivy went as Elphaba and Mercedes was Glinda.

HOW THEY’D BE INTRODUCED:

Ivy’s first scene would be the same as that of most of the main cast in the pilot episode: singing during her audition for New Directions while a voice-over introduces her by her name and what she’s singing. She’d be singing “Roxie” from Chicago, and it would probably be made clear how similar she was to Rachel, talented and very well knowing it.

WHO THE FANDOM SHIPS THEM WITH:

Probably a decent mix of a bunch of other characters. Her main ship would be Sam, of course, but there would also be people who shipped her with Artie and Mike and even Santana or Rachel or Quinn.

WHY THE FANDOM LOVES THEM:

Ivy is very similar to Rachel but not half as arrogant or stuck-up, so I think a lot of people would like her because they consider her a better alternative to Rachel - all of the talent and determination but none of the big head about it. They would probably also appreciate how often she calls other characters out on their bullshit, even Rachel and Finn and Mr. Schue, and a lot of her snappy comments and feminist lines would probably be the source of a lot of memes and GIFs and incorrect quotes.

WHY THE FANDOM HATES THEM:

Despite not being as arrogant as Rachel, Ivy is still uber-competitive and refuses to let anybody but Mercedes and her family closest to her for the longest time, especially the Unholy Trinity and any of the football boys, because she doesn’t trust them to really want to be her friend. This can definitely come off as cold and bitchy, which she honestly is a little bit, but I think a lot of people would only see it on the surface level and hate her because of it.

WHAT THE CAST RELATIONSHIP WOULD BE LIKE:

Auli’i Cravalho is an absolute gem, so I can totally see her getting along great with the cast! She’d probably be real-life besties with Amber Riley as well as on the screen, and I can definitely see her cracking jokes in interviews with Kevin Hale and Dianna Agron and just being really cute friends with everyone.

WHAT THEIR AUDITION SCENE WAS:

I imagine the audition scene for Ivy’s role would have been her first scene, auditioning for New Directions, accompanied by a reading of her first voice-over, even though that wouldn’t come until a few episodes later. It would be a perfect way to test auditioning actresses’ singing and how they could introduce the character, and reading the voice-over lines would allow the casting staff to see how they could embody the character beyond the first episode.

DEPENDANT ON THE FANDOM, WHO THEY’D BE AT PRESS TOURS/AT COMIC CON WITH:

I don’t think the Glee cast ever went to Comic Con, but during interviews I imagine Auli’i would probably mainly be with Amber Riley, since they play best friends, and probably Chord Overstreet in later seasons once Ivy and Sam’s relationship progresses.

IF THEY SPOIL THINGS:

I don’t really think Auli’i seems like the spoiling type, so probably not.

IF THE MOVIE/SHOW HAS ENDED, IF THEY’RE HAPPY WITH THEIR CHARACTER’S ENDING AND THE ENDING AT LARGE:

I think Auli’i would be - by the end of the show, Ivy’s getting ready for her first big Broadway role, she and Sam are in a really good place in their relationship, and she’s even sold some of her original songs to a recording company. What’s not for an actor to be happy about?

If they're a light or heavy sleeper: Fairly light - she's the kind of person who's always alert and ready, and that translates into when she's sleeping.

What they would do if they won the lottery right now: Buy herself some proper voice, acting, and dancing lessons, before giving the rest of it to her family and putting it towards a brand-new auditorium for the New Directions to practice in.

If they have a special item that they couldn't bear to lose: The CD of the Chicago soundtrack that used to be her grandmother's. It was the thing that got her into musical theatre in the first place, as well as meaning a lot to her and holding a lot of memories of her grandmother, so it would devastate Ivy if the old CD ever got broken or lost.

One negative personality trait of theirs: Her fiercely competitive nature. It's basically never done anything good for her or her relationships.

Their favorite 70s song: "Dancing Queen" by ABBA.

About one person they've lost: Ivy's grandmother was an incredibly good and loving woman, who loved musical theatre and made incredible sweet rolls. Even though she didn't have the voice for any success, she'd always dreamed of being a singing movie star like Marilyn Monroe, and when Ivy was a child, her grandmother's voice singing in the kitchen was one of her favorite sounds.

If they're a lover or a fighter: Definitely a fighter - she may not really like physical violence, but Ivy is a master at fighting with her words and much prefers it to trying to be peaceful in the face of someone being an asshole.

We’ve already talked about Laurens and Lizzie, so let’s talk about Ivy, Thea, Augusta, and Iris!!

Ahhhhh, I am in love with this crossover idea already!! Here’s some headcanons for it:

Okay, I just know that Ivy would be a protective friend over Thea - she knows that Thea’s a tough cookie ultimately and that she can protect herself, but she also knows that Thea’s an absolute sweetheart who opens herself up to be hurt a lot and she wants to prevent that from happening if she can.

Ivy might not be part of the girls’ band, but she is definitely their biggest supporter; she goes to every one of their shows she can get to, will definitely provide more background vocals for a performance if it’s needed, and will always be willing to collab with Thea on writing some songs for the band if the other girl wants.

She is also Iris and Augusta’s biggest shipper! She thinks they’re absolutely perfect for each other and, even if she does sometimes tease them about being lovey-dovey sometimes (which they definitely reciprocate once she and Sam get together), she will also gladly provide opinions on date outfits if either girl needs it and vehemently defend them if someone wants to make rude comments about their relationship.

I can definitely see Iris getting some records of musical soundtracks to play on her record player for when Ivy comes over! The two of them would have so much fun jamming out to the Chicago or Anything Goes soundtracks during sleepovers or if they’re just chilling in Iris’s room doing homework together.

Speaking of Iris and musicals, I think Ivy would definitely get her the Hair soundtrack on vinyl as a gift, both as a gentle tease about Iris’s hippy style and because Ivy genuinely thinks she’ll like the music.

I just know that Ivy and Augusta would be the joint queens of giving tongue-lashings to people who are being dicks, even beating out Santana for the crown. Everyone in Lima, adults included, fears pissing these girls off separately, but even more if they decide to gang up on someone because they will show no mercy.

Ivy would probably be nervous to tell Thea about the crush she had on Finn in middle school, even though it only lasted for about a week, when she sees how in love with that boy Thea is, but I don’t think Thea would be mad at her at all and they might even make little jokes about it from time to time.

Despite how different all their musical tastes are, I can definitely picture all of our girls performing some amazing duets! Ivy would definitely come to love country music through doing a few numbers with Thea, and would definitely be willing to croon some seventies hits with Iris. Her voice isn’t exactly made for rock music, but she would still be more than willing to sing backup for Augusta whenever she wants.

It was sort of an expensive form of payback, but the Cheerios were humiliated, she’d avenged her friend’s honor, and nobody ever found out who put up the posters, so she definitely considered it worth it.

There is actually a pretty obvious answer for this question, at least for me - “Let Me Be Your Star” from the show Smash is definitely Ivy’s theme song. In addition to being the song her fic is named after, it’s a perfect encapsulation of all her ambitions and desire to be on the stage, and just how badly she aches to achieve her dreams.

Evie, I know I say this pretty regularly, but I absolutely love you, thank you so much for this!! <3

So, number seven on my Spotify Wrapped is "You Should Probably Leave" by Chris Stapleton, and I definitely associate this with Wyatt Friedman and his relationship with Kelly Severide during their hookup phase! The repressed longing in the lyrics, the wanting to push the other person away a bit so you don't catch feelings but also wanting them to stay with you... it all just screams this phase of Wyatt and Severide's relationship to me!

Number nineteen is "Wendy" by Maisie Peters, and to me this song is definitely one of my new Ted Lasso babies, Day Harvington! For most of her romantic relationships before falling in love with Roy and Keeley, Day has been content to just stay in the background and let her partner be the main character in their story, even when it meant she just wound up getting hurt. After her most recent breakup before her story starts and she and her two friends move to Richmond, though, she makes a promise to herself that she is never going to play a background character in her love story again, if she ever manages to fall in love again, and I think this song is a really good showcase of that.

Number twenty-three is "Somebody To Love" by Queen, and you just know I have to give this to my Good Omens girl Luci Evans! Not only is Queen's music a big part of Good Omens and therefore part of Luci's story, but she's a pretty big fan of the band herself, and "Somebody To Love" is definitely one of her favorite songs from them.

Number forty is "First Burn" by Ari Afsar, and while this one was a little bit harder to figure out, I think I'll have to give this one to Ivy Kekoa, seeing as she's my resident show tunes girl! I can definitely see her singing this with some of the other Glee girls when she first finds out Sam has sort-of kind-of cheated on her by kissing Quinn, because even though they're not married and this isn't even on the scale of Alexander Hamilton's cheating she is just that dramatic. She would definitely sound amazing singing it, though!

Number fifty-one is "Cell Block Tango" from the musical Chicago, and honestly I'm going to have to give this one to my boy Will Welton, purely because I think it would be funny if he convinced Rebecca and Keeley to join him in a performance of this number to try and help Rebecca get over her feelings about Rupert.

Number sixty-three is "ocean eyes" by Billie Eilish, and I definitely associate this with Ivana Morozova and her reluctance to fall in love with Dick Grayson! Dick really does have those beautiful blue eyes, and as much as Ivana would like to resist them and resist falling for him (for many reasons, not the least of which being that the whole reason she came to Gotham was that she was sent there to kill his brother), she always winds up staring deeply into those ocean eyes and getting herself even further in!

Number seventy-nine is "Born This Way" by the Glee Cast, and maybe this is cheating, but I'm gonna go ahead and say my girl Bailey Taylor for this one! This would definitely be one of her favorite performances with the New Directions, and it's also a song she resonates with, having struggled with her sexuality and self-worth before. So on top of being a fun song to sing, it's really helped her and made her feel good about herself!

And finally, number ninety is another Queen song, "Another One Bites the Dust," and I figured we'd stick to the Good Omens OCs theme and go with Zazzadon! I can totally picture this being her intro song the first time she struts up to Earth to help out Aziraphale and Crowley, and it would definitely be playing during the fight in Aziraphale's bookshop in season two while she tries to keep Muriel safe and kick the asses of the lesser demons who are part of the raiding party!
