Happy Holidays (Again)!

Here's that second thing I mentioned two days ago: it's Cyrus, Therion, Ashlan, and Miles dressed up as Red Hat fairies! I did Cyrus and Therion in the more classic red like Nicola while Ashlan and Miles got green and blue, respectively, with red accents, similar to Lumis EX. It was especially lovely drawing Miles and Ashlan. They're my favorite four star units, and perhaps because of that (and their similar ages), I like to imagine that they're friends, so I'm glad I got to draw them together for the first time! The outfit designing practice was also nice to have since I'm doing something similar next year (which is shockingly soon!).

So I started replaying Octopath II for the one year anniversary, and while playing through Osvald's chapter 1, I noticed he mentions that the distance between Frigit Isle and Cape Cold is four days by sea. Now, a ship from this period can likely travel 4 knots in an hour in waters like that (seeing as they aren't icy or anything.) Which makes that distance about 442 miles, or 722 kilometers across. So I decided I had no choice but to figure out what the size of Solistia actually is. The answer is... big. Keep in mind that a person can walk *maybe* 33 km in a day if they're experienced and prepared.

Solistia would be, if I'm not stupid, about the size of Eurasia... The Eastern continent alone stretches the distance from Portugal to Kazakhstan.

Now, let's say this ship is moving slower, at more like three knots. Well, then our distance is 540 km, only 75% the initial presumed distance. Then we're looking at Solistia being 8,664 km across, which is still big, but not *as* big. In other words, Octopath Traveler II's full story likely took several years to complete in canon.

Fun in the Frostlands!

It may be cold and snowy outside, but that won't stop these travelers from having fun in the Frostlands! Whether you're getting a present from Nicola not-Santa, picking up some medicinal plants, having a friendly duel, or getting dragged around by your bestie Rondo, you'll make fast friends in no time!

After about a month, I finally finished this piece this morning! I had a blast drawing all 23 (I can't believe it's that many!) of these Frostlands travelers, and I'm really happy with how this turned out. I've already done a few practice doodles for the Riverlands travelers, so I'll continue those and eventually start the Riverlands piece.

hika ag... (not putting the eng ship name for search reasons) i already knew the devs were gonna push them the moment i saw the crossed paths illust released but ultimately it felt disappointing to me in the game orz i already don't like the feeling when a certain ship is being pushed if they aren't going to go the whole mile and make it canon but in a game like octopath where the protags have such minimal interaction i don't like that it feels like these two got special attention (they have the most banters together tied with thro/oche) and yet their interactions aren't.... interesting....! some of hikari's story banters with her literally feel like he could be talking to a random npc instead and the things hikari says in agnea's story ring very hollow to me 😞 given like the fact that they both lost their mothers, illusts show hikari dancing with her or playing the flute (even the lyre in a concept art draft), it's disappointing to me that their ingame banters don't touch on this at all... complained about their crossed paths story another time but honestly for all this complaining i don't hate them i just feel very disappointed and sort of like they wasted their interactions together ngrhg

V - Which character do you relate to most?

KINDA dungeon meshi spoilers... completely off topic from what i usually talk about but i like marcille's character arc and her goals arising from her fear of being left behind. i'm gonna keep things vague since dunmeshi just got an anime and is getting bigger and also since i don't want to go too deep into why i relate to her but stories about learning to value the time you have with friends while knowing it will end one day (frieren is another obvious one) are very close to me

sorry when you say ramble i think it will always be complaining-adjacent with me but after playing agnea ch3 with english voices i got so surprised at the difference between eng and jp giselle that i got compelled to make a comparison of it and it JUST... makes me so sad that certain chars will be more likely to be overlooked or overshadowed, even liked/disliked depending on localization efforts o<-< i know it's unrealistic to ask people to play in multiple languages bc that isn't feasible for everybody but honestly it's jarring sometimes how different certain characters or scenes can come off as... i struggle with interacting in fandom spaces bc i don't always agree with english localizing efforts (and i get it, it really is a difficult job and by no means do i think they did a BAD job at it most of the time) but because so many people who will interact with my posts have only been exposed to that version, i'll feel very... alienated?? by some interpretations that i see. but i mean ultimately interpretation is more subjective and i think localization only nudges you to one side or another, so i still just do the same as i would do otherwise and find people whose content i enjoy... that was a lot of rambling but did you know that in hikari's ch2 banter with castti the english changed his lines quite a bit ?? i've already talked about how i think eng hikari is more expressive in his voice acting but i think it's something that was present in the text first and i... AM VERY MIXED about it bc i do think it works Really nicely in certain scenes, but i still like how restrained jp hikari sounds because i think it suits him more... anyway this is just a small snippet of the kind of thing i think about when looking at localization like in the end it's just Different versions, i guess i do look at the original jp version as more accurate to the creators' intentions but i think having an "official" interpretation in english can be nice and valuable in its own right.. if i didn't think so i just wouldn't play these games in english at all lmao (by comparison i don't play korean games in english bc at least the ones i've gotten into don't have great localizations so i don't think it adds much merit)

Octopath 2 did a lot of things right but I feel like the Octopath 1 optional side quests were more memorable.

I can not remember any other NPC in OT2 that didn’t appear in the main character’s stories.

Meanwhile here I am pointing happily at Miles and Ria from the first game.

i distinctly remember Kaia Mother of Dragons from ot1 meanwhile i dont remember a single sidequest from ot2

Carrion Top 10 Game of the Year list

10 -Star Ocean The Second Story R - Full Disclosure, I'm still in the first couple of hours of this but it's really, really good. Just beautiful to look at too. If I could spend more time with it, it would have been higher than 10. 9 - Dave the Diver - Fun and chill but gets a little rinse and repeat after a while. 8 - Theatrhythm: Final Bar Line - Nostalgia Generating Machine. I miss the touch controls of the 3DS versions though. Not enough FFXIV music. 7 - Fire Emblem: Engage - Stupendously fun combat, but I missed the social aspects of Three Houses. Still got Lesbian Married though. 6 - Disgaea 7 - Classic, refined Disgaea. Way better than 6 by miles but not as good as 5. Super cute story though. 5 - Baldur's Gate 3 - LOOK I REALLY LIKE IT BUT MY COMPUTER COULDN'T REALLY RUN IT AND THEN I GOT A NEW ONE BUT WORK WAS BUSY. I'll play it. I know it's good. 4 - The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - I started playing it and emerged from a fugue state about 200 hours later with no idea what happened. Wonderful. 3 - Slay the Princess - So weirdly comforting and distressing at once. 10/10 would be a big bird again. 2 - Dredge - Once they introduced the thing to turn off monster damage, it became way more chill for me and thus way more fun. I get to just sit back, fish and go mad from the revelation of what I've done. 1 - Octopath Traveller 2 - I put 100 hours into this game and I still wasn't ready for it to be over.

(Honorable mentions to FFXIV's Endwalker patch cycle, during which I openly wept a lot and Monster Hunter World which I was finally able to play thanks to a mod that let me have a Monster buddy to hang out with ala the Stories series)
