📖 A new bill will provide millions of children in CA with free books thanks to Dolly Parton

A new bill signed into law will now provide millions of children in California with free books thanks to Dolly Parton.

The bill, SB 1183, was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom and will provide funding for Parton’s “Imagination Library” program, providing free books to children from birth to 5 years old.

Aiming to encourage preschool children to develop an early love of reading and learning, the bill received bipartisan support in both houses.

🦁 Pride of lions airlifted from Ukraine to Colorado in “biggest-ever warzone rescue of lions”

A pride of lions that were living at the Bio Park Zoo in Odessa, a southern city in Ukraine that has been impacted by the Russian-Ukraine war, has been airlifted to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, according to a news release.

“The big cats were urgently relocated when the war first broke by a convoy that journeyed over 600 miles across Ukraine and Moldova, arriving in Targu Mures, Romania, on May 24, 2022. The Targu Mures Zoo provided a temporary home for the animals for several months so that an emergency travel permit could be approved for the eleven lions to board an international rescue flight,” the release said.

🐶 Hundreds of Dogs Saved From Nevada Breeding Farm in Huge Police Operation

Authorities have seized around 300 dogs from a property in Nevada in what officials have described as a “large-scale” animal cruelty situation. Detectives from Nye County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) obtained a search warrant for a property in Amargosa Valley following an investigation and visited the location on Tuesday.

There, officials arrested a couple — Oskana Higgins and Vasili Platunov — on felony animal abuse and neglect charges, the NCSO said.

Jessica Wade began writing Wikipedia biographies about women and minority scientists who never got their due — from employers, from other scientists, from the public. Wade has written more than 1,600 Wikipedia entries for long-ignored women scientists, and she has firm beliefs on ideas on how to support girls interested in the field.

She won awards and medals and was cited by Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia.

☄️ Nasa’s Dart spacecraft ‘changed path of asteroid’

Scientists have now confirmed the orbit of a 160m-wide (520ft) space rock known as Dimorphos was altered when the Dart probe struck it head on last month. Researchers came to the conclusion after making measurements using a range of space and Earth-based telescopes.

The mission was conceived to test a potential strategy to defend the Earth against threatening objects.

🤖 Tiny Robots Have Successfully Cleared Pneumonia From The Lungs of Mice

Scientists have been able to direct a swarm of microscopic swimming robots to clear out pneumonia microbes in the lungs of mice, raising hopes that a similar treatment could be developed to treat deadly bacterial pneumonia in humans. The technology is still at a proof-of-concept stage, but the early signs are very promising.

“Based on this mouse data, we see that the microrobots could potentially improve antibiotic penetration to kill bacterial pathogens and save more patients’ lives,” says Victor Nizet, a physician and professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego.

Man with a Movie Camera (1929) Reflection

Man with a Movie Camera is an experimental silent film released in 1929; it was directed by Dziga Vertov and edited by his wife Elizaveta Svilova. The film does not have a narrative and instead follows a documentary-like form by showing the everyday lives of the citizens of the Soviet cities of Kiev, Kharkov, Moscow and Odessa.

Interestingly, the film is described as "having no actors" but I think that the man  with the movie camera himself and the editor, that the viewer sees often throughout the film, can be considered main actors/characters. On the other hand,  Vertov and Svilova could just have decided that since they too were members of Soviet Russia, that the film should also show what they got up to in their part of the cities' daily life.

The film adopts a large range of editing techniques which is quite amazing considering the time period that it was made. The edits include fast paced/slowed down cuts, the splitting of two different cuts being combined into one (now known as split-screen), stop motion animations, and double exposures (just to name a few). The film also uses a lot of transitions like dissolves and  quick cuts.

The actual footage of the film is wonderfully shot. In the beginning of the film there is a lot of empty space being shown and as the film is in black and white, the choice of composition where there is a nice contrast between light and shadow really shines. Most moving objects are darker than the background (whether or not this was on purpose is unknown to me) which draws the viewers eyes into focus. As there are many fast-paced scenes filled with lots of movement in the film Vertov uses a lot of pans/wide shots of the scene. He also seems to adopt the use of today's now known "dolly shots" in order to keep up with the speeds of transport.

I personally thought the film was rather boring, but its editing and shooting style were all really impressive to me, and (I mean, I’m no film critic, BUT) I commend Vertov and Svilova for their amazing work with what limited materials they had in the film world at the time.

Battleship Potemkin (Бронено́сец «Потёмкин» or Bronenosets Potyomkin) [1925]

An Important, Famous Film. It has influenced millions of film makers. Everyone’s seen it in Film Studies as part of 1st or 2nd year English in university, or during their film school classes; dissecting its editing, camera angles, or story elements. That bit in The Untouchables with the baby carriage in the train station? Yeah, that’s an homage to this film.

Various bad versions have traipsed around the world, mostly bad prints of a ‘re-edited for political messages’ editions. What I’m watching is the closest we’ll ever get to the original: the director’s versions of the inter-titles, the music commissioned for the film, and the scenes are in ‘the original order.’ Apparently there are still some missing scenes, which have been lost forever.

It’s only 72 minutes, so I’m treating this as an amuse bouche for today’s multiple course buffet; more about that soon.

Part 1: Men and Maggots

Location shooting, which is cool! No wimping out with studio shots for this production! See! the interior of a ship! See! how people operate cannons and deck guns! See! how little room there is!

This is about a 1905, supposedly failed, revolution which took place only 20 years before the film was made and the successful Russian Revolution was only seven years ago.

There’s some great lighting of sleeping sailors. Great contrast and shadow detail. Some lighting later here is done with the aid of mirrors.

Images of cleaning the ship and other regular labour, demonstrating how Noble the Common Effort is. Many of the inter-titles are used not only as dialogue, but also as narrative.

Revolution is brewing elsewhere and the sailors of the squadron battleship “Prince Tavrichesky” feels left out.

Meat on board is rotten. The ship’s doctor — Smirnov (no, really) — claims it’s fine, but the sailors say that “Russian prisoners in Japan are fed better than we are!” The sailors refuse to eat the borscht made from this maggot-infested flesh.

Part 2: Drama on the Deck

Sailors assemble on the deck at the bow.

Commander Golicoff (possibly an Admiral equivalent) asks the assembly “Who is satisfied with the borscht? Petty Officers, you can go. The rest will hang from the yard!” Which he points to. And the sailors look at, imagining bodies suspended.

A bunch head to the gun turret.

Another bunch try to get below decks by using the Admiral’s Hatch (which is not for them to use). They’re grouped and covered in a tarp. A line of sailors dressed differently and carrying rifles with bayonets line up.

Suddenly, a Holy Man appears on a deck above and prays for the Lord to “make the disobedient see reason!” He’s got a bible, a crucifix and the biggest greyest beard and hair in the world, which… uh… okay…

The order to ‘ready’ and aim into the canvas is given. Some of the sailors in the group kneel.

The Holy Man taps his crucifix into his palm like a parent or teacher with a ruler.

The order is given to shoot is given, but the instigator of the rebels, sailor Grigoriy Vakulinchuk, decides to call out to the riflemen “Brothers! Who are you shooting at?” The barrels quaver and one by one drop, despite the order to fire being repeated by the officer in charge (who in a very foolish decision, is now standing between the rifles and the condemned sailors). No shot is fired. Vakulinchuk calls for his fellows to take-up the rifles! Calling the authorities ‘dragons,’ he urges his fellows to smash them all.

All the officers are prevented from escaping, and all rifles are broken out of storage. The Holy Man urges a sailor to “have fear of God!” but gets called a sorcerer and hit with a rifle butt for his trouble. He falls down the stairs he was climbing, and we see him later awaken, but then either die or pass out again.

Fist fights galore break-out all over the ship, complete with men clambering over a piano and using a chandelier as a bludgeon upon one of the officers.

Vakulinchuk dies and is taken in honour to a tent on the point of land at the Port of Odessa.

Part 3: Dead Man Calls Out

Mist / fog shots. Pretty.

Many people visit the laying in state. Thousands. The populace is moved to revolution. Fists are waved amid cries to smash the oppressors.

Suddenly, a man says “smash the Jews!” The crowd turns to him in shock. We see him chuckle. More heads snap in his direction. He is set upon. The crowd is unified for all people. ‘Shoulder to shoulder, this land is ours, tomorrow is ours,’ for this is a class war not a race war. Old, young, Jew, Gentile, man, woman, workers of all types, wives and maids, all are as one.

The shore watches ‘Potemkin’ (which is a new name in the inter-titles) tensely and attentively as a representation from the people of Odessa comes aboard to state their solidarity with the sailors.

A red banner is raised on the main mast of the ship (provided each time we see it by careful hand-tinting of individual frames).

Part Four: Odessa Staircase

The rebellious battleship and Odessa lived together. Dunkirk-like, hundreds of little sailboats, dingy, and rowboats, bearing food — including a live goose and piglet — go out to the battleship. All the town watches and waves, from well-dressed ladies to legless beggars.

Suddenly shooting starts as soldiers arrive to put down this uprising. As panic takes hold, there is much quick cutting back and forth and we have a dolly-shot following at an angle a group of people running down the many plateaus of the staircase (how did they do that in 1925?). The soldiers march forward and down the steps, over the fallen civilians, toward a mother carrying her son who was first shot and then trampled to death, urging the soldiers to listen and not shoot. She is shot by the Cossack soldiers.

Another mother — this one with a child in a carriage, its wheels precipitously close to the edge of the top step — is shot and bleeds. Her hands stained with her own blood, she falls to the ground, pushing the carriage over the edge. We follow it both in profile and in dolly-shot mode as it descends the steps, bouncing out of control as the horrified masses watch the purest symbol of their rebellion, a tiny, defenceless infant, yearning only to live and breathe a free life, careens through danger from crashing or flying bullet.

Then the battleship responds, hitting the Odessa Theatre where the Generals are headquartered.

Part Five: Rendezvous with the Squadron

The Admiral’s Squadron is rumoured to be on its way, so the battleship’s sailors decide to face it united.

Night falls, people sleep at their posts to be ready, all the while the squadron approaches.

The squadron is spotted, and tensions increases as engines are stoked and guns readied. The music’s tempo and volume increases incrementally and incessantly as the ship approaches the Squadron and certain destruction. The enemy is signalled to join the revolution. Each side is within range, and now it is all against one.

No shot is fired! The sailors are all Brothers in the fight against the Admiralty, loyal to the Tsar. The battleship of rebels is allowed to sail through the squadron, with its red banner continuing to flap in the wind.

A stunning achievement, and you really do get caught-up ink the story and the plight of the characters. It’s surprising how quick some of the editing is, too, really moving this story along and building tension throughout.

★★★★☆ for story, with a ★★★★★ for innovation and technical wizardry beyond what might be expected for a film of the time.
