No one in history could possibly be as bad as Freyr was at staying out of trouble. They had successfully caught Njördson again.

Chains he could not break or move in, a cage so uncomfortably small; there was little hope here that he'd escape let alone survive the ordeal... and whatever hope did remain they had brutally cut from him. Old scars were reopened, rewritten, and reformed until his voice could no longer be heard- until his throat was raw from the cries of his agony. Freyr had completely given up, resigning himself to his fate, the only regret being the friends he'd never see the faces of again. It was all he could think of sitting alone in the dark. In the distance, though, his ears could pick up on the angry and startled cries of the Einherjar and the clashing of weapons mixed with the agonized screams of a battle. His heart stirred and his ears strained themselves to listen. Fear gripped him. They could be getting rambunctious out there, starting fights among themselves and soon it would be anger directed toward him. He was already so fragile and torn up... he knew he wouldn't survive it if they turned on him. Yet, there was no energy within him to even attempt an escape let alone to brace himself against the inevitable. So Freyr sits there, staring at the floor and listening to the chaos crawl closer and closer. He prayed to whatever gods were listening- a final plea from Vanaheim's prince, cut short as the doors swing open and bathe him in the blinding light from the outside.

"Please..!" He whimpers, shutting his eyes tightly. "Don't hurt me..! Let me go, please..!" Words he was certain were falling on deaf ears. "I beg of you, please..!"

Helmed by the DOST-PCAARRD Executive Director, Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora, the monitoring team also included Dr. Mari-Ann Acedera, Director for Marine Resources Division (MRRD), Ms. Ma. Adela Corpuz (Supervising Science Research Specialist), Mr. Jaypee Trinidad (Science Research Specialist), Ms. Hannah May Odemer (Project Technical Assistant), and Mr. Dan Carlo Barrion (Project Technical Assistant). The occasion also included a visit to the Fish Port Complex of General Santos City.

The field monitoring began on the 23rd with a visit to Gentuna Century Canning Corporation as part of the benchmarking for the Industry-level Collaborative R&D to Leverage Philippine Economy (I-CRADLE) proposal of MSU-GSC, which is one of the prospective partnerships of the institution with the DOST. The visit was spearheaded by Ms. Joanna Mae Padua, who served as the representative for SOCSKSARGEN Federation of Fishing and Allied Industries, Inc. (SFFAII). Ms. Padua led the tour in the canning facility, introducing the process of tuna canning production, from market to can, to the delegates. The day was capped with a courtesy call to Chancellor Aragasi and a brief meeting with the MSU-GSC Tuna Research team, the latter of which was the first face-to-face meeting of the two parties since the implementation of the project during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Evaluation and review of the ongoing tuna program, including a tour of the laboratories renovated thanks to the funding of the DOST, was conducted on the 24th. Progress of the whole program was presented by Dr. Edna P. Guevarra, Vice-Chancellor for Research and Extension and Program Leader, showcasing its accomplishments since its implementation in March of 2020. Dr. Guevarra, together with Prof. Glenville Castrence of the College of Fisheries, also presented the results of Project 1 of the program entitled, “Reproductive Biology of Three Philippine Neritic Tuna Species in Mindanao.”

Findings of Project 2 of the program, “Dietary Analysis and Feeding Habits of Six Philippine Tuna Species using Metagenomics” were presented by its Project Leader, Dr. Donna Ria J. Canacan of the College of Agriculture, and Dr. Ramjie Y. Odin, Vice-Chancellor for Research, Extension, and Development of MSU-Maguindanao, who also serves as a collaborator in the project. Results of Project 3 (“Otolith Elemental Fingerprinting, Shape Analysis and Microstructural Analysis of Three Philippine Neritic Tuna Species”) were presented online by Dr. Cleto Nañola, Jr. and Prof. Ariel Ortiz of the College of Fisheries. Project 4, entitled, “Ichthyoplankton Resource Identification Towards Replenishment of Tuna Species in Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (SBPS) and Adjacent Waters” was presented by its project leader, Prof. Julius V. Mingoc of the College of Fisheries. The delegates were then toured around the laboratories in the Regional Science Research Center and the College of Fisheries as part of the presentation of Project 5, “Upgrading of Marine Biodiversity, Histopathology, and Molecular Biology Laboratories of MSU General Santos City for Advancement of Biodiversity Studies in Mindanao.”

Providing feedback on the findings of the research and giving suggestions for further improvement of the gathered data was Dr. Wilfredo Campos, who was invited as external evaluator. Dr. Campos, who is currently the Chair for the Division of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences of University of the Philippines – Visayas, provided pointers on how to further refine the projects’ findings to make them suitable for policy recommendation to the local government units in SOCSKSARGEN .

Spanning from the 25th to 26th, further details regarding the I-CRADLE and other partnerships of the DOST with MSU-GSC were then discussed with the delegates.

The visit marks the first time the DOST-PCAARRD has visited the MSU-GenSan campus.

Using online design resources such as Behance, I found some awareness campaigns that I thought had quite cohesive design systems.

This design system uses a simple illustrative style with repeated motifs to communicate their topic of awareness. The colour pallet works well with the visual style of illustration as it is positive and bright, while not downplaying the issue and complicating the style. I think the circle motifs and smiley faces used throughout is a clever aspect of the design system. Hijacking the popular smiley face icon provided a quick and effective way of conveying non-physical emotional ideas relevant to the campaign. The illustrations are simple fine line drawings, which work well with the solid circle motif which by contrast is a solid colour. The typeface chosen is a simple serif type in a typewriter style. This choice is good as it is very legible, and the hand typed aspect adds a personalised touch considering the campaign provides personalised letters to people in need.

This awareness campaign also uses an illustrative style, however the final appearance of the illustrations looks more hand drawn and organic, which is a feature I appreciate and think makes the campaign more personal. The colour pallet used is nice, but I think it needs some refinement because there are some colours like the pink that seem random and aren’t used throughout the system. The typography used also looks hand drawn, which works well with the illustrative style. I think it is clever using the sign language symbols to represent letters in some type used. The hand pictures are very simple and clear, and the hand drawn effect makes them look instructional but not lifeless and boring which is good.

This awareness campaign has a different design system to the previous. The imagery is created by editing photographs which makes more realistic imagery. The bright colour pallet is extensive, however the style suites the pallet. The clear, simple, sans serif typeface in all capitals is a very good type choice as it conveys the seriousness of the issue and allows the powerful images to speak for themselves. The direct, imperative language style is also a good tool used throughout this design system. While the visual photographic style works well for this campaign, I’m not sure it would be suitable to use for the imagery in my campaign as microplastics are essentially invisible - accurate depictions wouldn’t make the communication clearer.
