Seokmin : “I’ll help you study”
Type: Fluff
Words: 860
It wasn’t a statement of modesty to say you could do better than you currently were in your economics class. You were skating the line of average and slightly above it, only because of the time and additional effort you spent making up assignments and studying late into nights, outside of the classroom.
Perhaps part of the reason for your inattention in class was because that was where you were most distracted.
Lee Seokmin isn’t that great of a student, though he’s certainly a good kid. Slightly rambunctious and loud, he loved to entertain and make people laugh more than he liked to pay attention in class. He’s extremely lovable, with his goofy grin that pushed his eyes into joyful crescents, and his dumb, harmless jokes, his grades only barely scraping by because of how charming he is even to teachers. No one could escape his charms, or say anything negative about him, and if they could, it would be moot because it was known to even the most ignorant fool (such as himself) that he always had good intentions.
Not to mention, he was cute, with his tall, sharp nose, his jaw and cheeks just as angular, brown eyes always so warm and friendly, matching his bubbly, easygoing personality yet contrasting his sharp features.
You couldn’t deny how your heart fluttered when he smiled – easily and often, making it increasingly difficult for you to stomach the tender feelings he bubbled up within you, only growing as time passed.
It was even harder when he sat next to you in economics, every weekday without fail, directing that smile your way when you tried to take notes, making you feel as if the sun was shining directly at you with the warmth he radiated.
You often wonder if telling your teacher that you had trouble learning because the sun was shining in your eyes would suffice as a valid excuse.
It’s nearing the end of the semester when you find yourself under the focus of that smile once again, trying to suppress your own by biting your lip, because the joke he’d just whispered was actually funny this time. Your hand, clutching your pen, is frozen at the center of your notebook, where you’d tried to take notes, though in reality you hadn’t even filled a single line.
You startle, your head shooting up, eyes to the front of the room, when your teacher smacks a textbook shut, announcing how she hoped everyone had a good grasp on the material and weren’t too distracted because finals were only a month away.
Your heart sinks a little at the reminder of the dreaded exams, but your attention is immediately diverted when you glance beside you and notice how Seokmin has paled significantly, no trace of his signature grin on his face, and he curses under his breath.
“I…I forgot, oh my god,” he murmurs, and you almost want to start giggling again at how absolutely stricken the usually carefree boy looks now, but the panic and dread in his eyes is all too familiar to you, reminding you of your own struggles with everything school-related. “Finals are in a few weeks and I don’t understand anything in this class and I never have and there isn’t much time left I’m gonna fail what am I-“
“-I’ll help you study,” you interrupt suddenly. Your mouth seems to be working before your brain can process and catch up with the fact that that would be a bad idea because you’re close to being in the same situation as he is, and already struggling to make it up. Not to mention, he didn’t exactly help you focus.
Seokmin’s look of bewilderment is another wonder to behold, and God is it adorable, his eyes wide and disbelieving, mouth open slightly.
“We have a lot of time,” you assure him. You take advantage of his stunned silence as your teacher dismisses you, and come up with a compromise to the decision you’re now sure your heart had made instead of your brain. “In exchange for you not telling me your dumb jokes in class so we can both actually pay attention,” you suggest with a playful smile.
Seokmin blinks, and mirrors your smile, something pleasant fluttering in your stomach as his grin widens, lighting up his entire face. “Please!! You’re a life-saver, a real, true angel on earth, and you have a deal.”You try your best to pretend your pulse doesn’t quicken when he helps you gather your things and you make your way to your next class together, working out the details of how you’re going to escape an economics-induced existential crisis somewhat unscathed.

It only takes a hastily scribbled note, (“Good work today, can’t wait for tomorrow!!~”) accompanied by a doodled smiley face with hearts for eyes, to provide you with all the motivation you need to keep going for the rest of the semester – and probably many more after that – but the sticky notes mysteriously appear in your textbook after each one of your study sessions, making your heart leap with each new doodle and message of encouragement.
