Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) - Review & Analysis
Here’s a non-controversial statement: 2017’s Wonder Woman is a legitimately great film (if you discount the last act’s boring battle). A fun, yet emotional anti-war tale with a great period aesthetic. What elevated it from greatness was its starkly bleak reveal that Ares does not start man’s wars, but he merely gives humans ideas for how to instigate them. Ultimately, it is Man who holds responsibility for our own destruction, and despite this Wonder Woman still chooses to help us poor creatures. Cool themes, cool hero, cool movie.
Wonder Woman 1984 shares the main character from its 2017 forerunner, as well as its dedication to recreating a particular period aesthetic (here the 1980s), but the brilliant writing from the first film is gone. The main themes are essentially… “be careful what you wish for” and “winners never cheat; cheaters never win.” Not the most grand and interesting follow-up to the prior film’s genuine insight into human nature.
But that’s OK. I’m really not sure why this movie is getting so much flak online. If DC’s recent prior history with filmmaking should have taught us anything, it’s that 2017’s Wonder Woman was a fluke. Remember that this is the same studio that brought us the outstanding climax to Batman vs. Superman where one grown man learns that another grown man’s mother is also named Martha. Oh, and did we all just forget that Justice League is one of the worst movies we have all collectively ever seen?
So let’s not be too hard on WW84 for not meeting the quality of 2017’s Wonder Woman. Few comic book movies can. In the more fair comparison to other movies in the DCEU, it sits below Shazam! and Aquaman, and just a smidge below Birds of Prey, but certainly above Suicide Squad, and then literally leaps and bounds over every other movie they’ve made.
Let’s start with the good. Honestly, despite my gripes about the themes of the movie not being very profound, I found the story to be interesting. The movie centers around Diana Prince (Gal Gadot in her role as an archaeologist for the Smithsonian and not as Wonder Woman) stumbling upon an ancient stone whose inscription invites people who hold the stone to make a wish. No one takes it really seriously at first, so two people make wishes without thinking they could come true. The first person is Diana herself who wishes to bring her boyfriend (whom she only knew for about a week, mind you) from the dead. As a reminder from the first film, her boyfriend Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) had died nearly 70 years prior to the start of this film in a dramatic, sacrificial, world-saving act. Apparently, Diana hasn’t moved on at all from the 1910s and still considers her short-time lover to be her forever lover. She’s not really a human and did not grow up a human, so I think we can forgive her for not moving on… but it is weird to imagine that Diana somehow works at the Smithsonian (without going to college? Or did she?) without developing any friends or interest in life. Wouldn’t she have moved on... like a little bit?
Anyways, she wants her boyfriend back, and that’s wish #1. Wish #2 comes from new character Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig… who I am shocked to find is 47 years old! She looks fantastic and far younger in this film). Were Barbara a man, the way she is treated by her colleagues would put them in the stereotypical role of a future school shooter. Barbara is a brilliant gemologist for the Smithsonian, but goes completely unrecognized for her brilliance. She is shy and unconfident, and subsequently people frequently forget that they have even met her. Add on to that the fact that she has to work in the same office as Wonder Woman, and her loneliness and subjective feelings of unattractiveness increase as male employees drool over Diana while they ignore and mock Barbara. Therefore, we would forgive her for having a chip on her shoulder. Yet, for all this, Wiig avoids playing her as an angry, emo goth. Barbara kinda has this air about her of “Well, this is just how life is, and there’s nothing I can do to change that.” Given the character’s lack of self-confidence and lack of social grace, it at times seemed like Wiig was just reprising her old SNL character, Penelope, the socially awkward one-upper. But that’s not fair to her character. Wiig portrays Barbara with an earnest goodness to her. She’s one of those people who when allowed to talk one-on-one proves to be more eloquent and interesting than you could have imagine. Far from being angrily envious of Diana’s confidence and beauty, she’s more sadly jealous. Naturally, then, she wishes on the stone to be more like Diana… unaware that this wish might have some unintended benefits.
But then, there’s a third key character to the film (and a third wishmaker), the main villain Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal). I cannot tell you if this was a good character or not… and I cannot tell you whether the imperfections of the character are more due to the film’s writing or Pascal’s performance. Lord is another loser, and like Barbara, his “loser” status is the result of being a victim of America’s prejudicial attitudes. But whereas Barbara fell victim to sexism, Lord falls victim to racism. Hispanic in origin, Lord grew up in America with an abusive father at home and racist classmates at school. Beaten down from an early age, all he wants in life is to make a name for himself, to prove he’s not a loser. In a clever twist, Lord (the person who originally ordered the wish stone to come to America before it was confiscated by the FBI and sent to the Smithsonian for analysis) does not simply use the stone to wish for riches and power… he wishes to BECOME the stone. That way, he can get nearly infinite wishes so long as he can con the people around him to wish things for him.
The scenes of Max Lord as a flawed human who just wants to not be a loser show Pascal giving a great performance as a human being at the ends of desperation. The scenes of Max Lord the supervillain are… not good. In a long string of over-the-top, eccentric, hyperconfident supervillains in countless superhero movies, Pascal’s Lord is just not interesting. In fact, he is literally a weak character. He cannot fight for himself as his body is crumbling (a side effect of wishing to become a stone). Furthermore, his initially grounded motivations to finally be respected and successful seem to be just utterly lost by the end of the film when he just wishes for world chaos… only then to turn around and declare undying love for his son. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
Failure to understand a character’s motivations casts a shadow over Barbara’s character arc as well. It is explained that the wish stone takes something in return for granting someone their wish. So as payment for bringing Steve Trevor back to life, Diana loses some of her strength. Still… this strains to fully explain why Barbara, after gaining Wonder Woman-like strength, turns into a walking humanoid cheetah (complete with bad CGI like she walked straight out of the cast of 2019’s Cats.) Like I get that she lost some of her humanity and morality in exchange for strength… but Cheetah girl seems like a little much. And though initially it is fun to see Wiig get to play Barbara as a confident and sexy woman who fights back against the patriarchy, the movie (I think) unfairly pushes her into the villain role. In my opinion, she should be treated as a tragic character, something akin to a Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, as her villainous tendencies are not really her fault. She literally had the part of her that cares about other humans taken away from her when she naively and innocently wished to be like Diana. Instead, the movie has Diana lecture her that she shouldn’t be so evil. She literally can’t, lady! Stop being so hard on her! In any case, it seems like a failed opportunity to generate sympathy for a genuinely likable character who tragically becomes a villain not through her own accord.
That failure to create genuine emotions extends to Diana’s story as well. As soon as Steve is resurrected, you know by the movie’s end he will be dead again. There’s no other way this movie ends. Yet, the fact that Diana is so stubborn in refusing to give up Steve makes it hard to sympathize with her. She is simply being selfish, making her eventual decision to say goodbye to Steve feel more like her finally doing the right (and obvious) thing, and not some heartbreaking decision. Also the fact that seemingly Diana hasn’t even tried to move on in the last seventy years doesn’t help matters for me: it more just feels like a lazy way to write in Chris Pine’s popular character into the second movie. The move certainly weakens the idea of Diana as a strong, independent woman by making her emotionally stunted and crippled for the last 70 years. It would have been a much more satisfying (and daring) choice if Diana had moved on from Steve emotionally and had to deal with the guilt of having brought him back by accident, particularly if he didn’t want to go back to being dead. Instead... Steve knows he has to go back and Diana feels no guilt keeping him around. It’s weak character writing.
These poor choices I contrast with two of my favorite TV shows that demonstrate perfectly how former lovers who miraculously reunite eventually have to say goodbye for good: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Jane the Virgin. For risk of spoilers to those still watching Jane, I’ll stick to the Buffy example. There’s an episode of Buffy (though technically an episode of the spin-off show Angel) where Buffy and her vampire lover Angel are fresh off their recent and tumultuous break-up, but through some dark magic that neither seeks out, they are given the opportunity to live a life where Angel isn’t actually a vampire and their love can be fully expressed. Yet, in the end, Angel opts to give up his life as a human and return to being a vampire. The choice is so moving precisely because (due to circumstances I cannot begin to explain) in choosing to give up his life with Buffy, he saves her life as well. Whereas in this movie, Diana choosing to let Steve go is really just her choosing to undo her choice to essentially cheat death. Angel, however, is actively choosing to give up a life of happiness he never wished for but was just given on a silver platter, and will now live in a world where his lover will never know his selfless act and will go on hating him. It’s heartbreaking in a way Wonder Woman dreams it could be.
And not to get too Buffy-heavy… but that show also deals with the emotional consequences of being ripped out of the afterlife much better than this movie. Steve just kinda unrealistically adapts to being alive again in all of five minutes. If, perhaps, from the start he questioned why he was there and hinted to Diana that something was wrong, the emotional aspect of this story, the doomed nature, the feeling of “this is the last chance we’ll have together” could have made this a stronger movie. I wanted to find myself crying when Diana finally says bye to Steve, and I was no where close to that. Gal Gadot shares at least part of the blame. She’s a pretty wooden actress. It’s something I noticed in 2017’s Wonder Woman, but in that movie she was supposed to be a fish out of water so her stilted presence seemed appropriate. Here, where she’s supposedly become an assimilated American for 70 years… it is just bad acting.
Anyways, another aspect of this film that was lacking were the visuals. The bad CGI of Barbara as Cheetah is just scratching the surface here. The opening flashback to Diana as a girl performing in the Amazonian Olympics just… looks fake. I don’t know. The reliance on CGI over practical effects is clear and distracting. It’s only worse in the subsequent scene where Wonder Woman stops a theft from occurring in a mall. The effects are just bad. Like passable for a film in the 1990s or early 2000s. But for a 2020 blockbuster, it’s noticeably bad. And already the scene where Wonder Woman is running towards the camera with a weird green screen behind her seems to have become a meme given just how weird it looks.
And yet, for all the negatives I’ve listed, this is a decent action flick. There’s even some nice set pieces like the one in the White House. As little as I liked Max Lord as a supervillain, I found figuring out the other half of each of his various Monkey Paw wishes (i.e. the downside of each wish) to be clever. unfortunately, each of the main three characters fails to have a story line that takes full advantage of their emotional potential, or they are just poorly acted. With few exceptions, the film eschews “fun” in favor of “seriousness.” Really the only exception is, as in the first film, the chemistry between Pine and Gadot. Their chemistry makes for some of the movie’s best moments, like when Wonder Woman makes the plane they’re flying in invisible and the pair flies over fireworks on the fourth of July. But that sense of whimsy in their scenes is largely absent from the rest of the film. This is particularly true of the action sequences, especially those at the climax. The seriousness makes them rather boring. Really, I’m comparing these action scenes with the last half hour or so of Birds of Prey which really set the bar for superhero movie fight choreography. So in the end, it’s overall an OK movie. It certainly isn’t as bad as others make it out to be, but I cannot believe I’m saying this… in 2020 if you’re in the mood for a fun superhero movie, you’re better off with the Suicide Squad sequel than the Wonder Woman sequel.

Let There Be Sunlight
Tumblr media
Holy shit it’s 2019! What did you get up to in 2018? What were your achievements, your successes? (Tumblr, I see that you have quasi-upgraded your blogging platform so I can have proper post titles AND photo layouts, congrats! Except they don’t really work!!)
One thing I did was upgrade my workspace, cause holy fuck it was starting to get depressing having my desk in a dark corner.
Welcome to Homeworking HQ (Ditmas Park) 2.0! Now I get to push pixels beside my big, bright, plant-adorned window, which allows me to bathe in all the reflected sunlight I can take and more easily spy on the people across the street at all hours of the day. In addition to relocating my desk, I got rid of another shitty table I didn’t like/need and replaced it with something useful: colour-coordinated S-T-O-R-A-G-E!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Behold!
Since apparently I don’t know how to purchase anything that isn’t red, yellow or blue, I found this not-Bisley™ wheeled filing cabinet online and then filled it with shit to organize other-shit-that-was-cluttering-up-my-apartment. There is nothing quite as satisfying as hidden things unnecessarily matching other things that are also hidden!
The only other surface I now have to eat off/do anything at is this IKEA “kitchen island” which I mostly end up standing at if I have a guest over like some awkward personal bartender because I currently only have one tall stool:
Tumblr media
December: back on the holiday caramel-making bullshit.
Anyways, so far, it’s been a success sitting 10 feet closer to a natural light source, measurable by the fact that I really actually enjoy sitting at my desk again.
Tumblr media
Wow, I’m sitting beside a window! Ok!
But how else does one define success? Purchasing objects to improve your quality of life is one thing, but measuring success in your career and personal life is trickier.
Warning: the rest of this post is basically me practicing long winded/unfunny/unresearched existential thought diarrhea so feel free to maybe skip it!
When I was younger and still unsure of what direction my life would take post-art school, I knew that at least no matter what I ended up doing, I wanted to be successful at it, and loosely defined that “success” as being able to make a living from it (growing up in a financially unstable household, self-sustained monetary security was of high importance). I was very lucky that I fell into a creative line of work that I not only found enjoyable and challenging, but was able to turn into a relatively fruitful career.
But the thing with a low threshold of success is that as soon as you achieve it, you need to begin rescaling your definition of it to keep moving forward: you need to embrace AMBITION.
O, ambition! What highs! I remember in my late 20s working a full-time advertising job then coming home and joyfully working a number of assorted freelance jobs. I loved it! (My then-boyfriend hated it!) I was productive! I was building a portfolio! The future! and! amount! of! work! was! limitless!
But now I’m TIRED. Thinking about work makes me TIRED. Just seeing my phone display “January” made me TIRED. Last year when I had a temporary full-time gig, with a 1.5-hour daily commute, I got home and ate take-out sushi with 13 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy and ignored my freelance work and fell the fuck ASLEEP.
And still, despite a lack of energy (vitamin B and heme iron be damned), I feel guilty every minute of the day before 10pm that I’m not working on something. Even if all my client jobs are complete, I still feel like I should be taking advantage of that rare “free time” and work on a personal project (this post itself is a direct result of the joy/guilt from staying in on New Year’s Eve).
There’s the concept of a healthy work/life balance, but who has time for that? No minute can ever be wasted, because ambition is always perched on your shoulder whispering: you need to produce MORE THINGS; you need to work HERE, or teach THERE; you need to be on THIS WEBSITE, or THIS LIST, or in THIS GALLERY, or work with THIS STUDIO, and have THIS TITLE, or give THIS TALK… or you’re not really achieving success. Even if to outside eyes it might look like you’re doing pretty damn good, when you measure yourself next to your industry peers, you’re ultimately a smidgen above average, at best.
What’s sadly comforting is that achievement insecurity pervades almost everyone. A friend that I consider to be extremely successful (owning companies, property) once confided that their own family doesn’t see their achievements to be very worthwhile. Another friend, who puts so much work into running their own small business, is realizing the energy they’re pouring in is not resulting in a sustainable existence. Yet another friend, who seemed to have achieved the whole perfect job/house/marriage/dog combo, felt inadequate for having trouble conceiving.
So what if you’re not reaching the level of success you think you should have by now? Does yearning for more keep you moving forward, or just make you feel shitty? When do you abandon ambition? As my friend Amil Niazi recently commented on the Sheryl Sandberg concept of “leaning in”, when can we just give up and “lean out”?
What I’m realising is that what possibly makes the idea of abandoning success so difficult is that I, a single woman, don’t know what I’d replace it with. As 20-somethings unburdened with families to raise or households to maintain as earlier generations were, we were instead burdened by the freedom and expectation to become who we wanted as early as we could. And if we millennial women are not trying to live our most ambitiously fulfilling lives [on social media], do we even have an identity?!
If a woman chooses to forego ambition, there seems to be only one acceptable reason for that: motherhood. (She can have it all as well, but god forbid she have neither!) But I’m not sure I want that either, and so giving up success without starting a family means I will have to decide if I not only want to let myself but also society-at-large down.
Your 30s (ironically the decade that I’ve decided is about learning to not give a shit) seems to be the ultimate reality check; either you’ve already “made it”, or you need to embrace that you haven’t, probably aren’t going to, and are too damn tired to keep trying. Do we just need to give ourselves a break at this point? Re-evaluate our definition of success yet again, instead of abandoning it altogether? Maybe the better question is WHY I feel the need to measure my own success in the first place, when everyone’s definition is different anyways... someone’s definition might be having a baby and a white picket fence; mine should be managing to survive in New York without health insurance while self-employed.
Tumblr media
Me, exemplifying the self-satisfaction that comes with writing about yourself on social media while simultaneously exhibiting how my apartment has been reorganized.
I was recently told by an older friend that your 40s is about learning to love yourself. So I guess I’ve got 4 more years of trying to “make it” before I can officially give up and force myself to be happy with (or at least acknowledge) what I’ve achieved thus far, and worry about nothing more. Looking forward to that menial office job and craft room in the sky!

Film Review - Mortal Kombat (2021 reboot)
To kick off my between-series break of film reviews, I’ve decided to start by looking at a live-action film released earlier this year that is a reboot of a live-action film franchise based on an iconic series of fighting games.  In other words, this will be my take on the recent live-action film reboot of Mortal Kombat.
Plot (as adapted from Wikipedia):
In 17th-century Japan, Lin Kuei assassins led by Bi-Han kill the warriors of the rival Shirai Ryu ninja clan led by Hanzo Hasashi, including Hanzo's wife and son. Hanzo kills the attackers before being killed by Bi-Han, resulting in his soul being condemned to the Netherrealm. Raiden, god of thunder, arrives and takes Hanzo's surviving infant daughter to safety.
In the present, the realm of Outworld has defeated Earthrealm in nine of ten tournaments known as "Mortal Kombat"; if Earthrealm loses the tenth tournament, the rules state it will be conquered by Outworld. However, an ancient prophecy states that the "blood of Hanzo Hasashi" will unite a new generation of Earthrealm's champions to prevent Outworld's victory. Aware of this, soul-eating sorcerer Shang Tsung, who has overseen the last nine victories, sends his warriors to kill Earthrealm's champions, identified by a dragon mark, before the next tournament begins. One such champion, a former professional MMA fighter named Cole Young, is attacked alongside his family by Bi-Han, who now calls himself Sub-Zero. However, Special Forces Major Jackson "Jax" Briggs rescues the Youngs, directing them to find his partner, Sonya Blade. Jax stays to battle Sub-Zero but loses his arms in the process.
Cole tracks Sonya to her hideout, where she is interrogating a captive Australian mercenary named Kano. She reveals that she and Jax have been investigating Mortal Kombat's existence and that the dragon mark can be transferred to anyone who kills the original bearer. They are attacked by Shang Tsung's assassin, Syzoth, but Kano kills him with Cole and Sonya's help. They travel to Raiden's temple and meet current Earthrealm champions Liu Kang and Kung Lao before being brought to Raiden, who is critical of the newcomers. They are joined by Jax, whom Raiden rescued and fitted with a set of mechanical arms. Shang Tsung attempts to attack the temple, but is stopped when Raiden shields it from intrusion. While Sonya helps Jax recover, Cole and Kano train with Kang and Lao to unlock their "arcana", a special power unique to all dragon mark bearers.
During an argument, Kano awakens his arcana, the ability to shoot a laser out of his right eye. Cole is unable to awaken his despite his persistence. Disappointed with Cole, Raiden sends him back to his family, while revealing that he is a descendant of Hasashi. Shang Tsung gathers his warriors, including Kano's former ally, Kabal, to attack the temple. Kabal convinces Kano to defect and sabotage the shield. During the fray, Jax awakens his arcana, granting him strength and upgraded arms. Concurrently, the Youngs are attacked by Goro. Cole rouses his arcana, giving him a suit of armour and a set of tonfas derived from a strength bracelet made by Cole’s daughter. He kills Goro and helps repel the attack on the temple. Shang Tsung and Sub-Zero are infuriated when Raiden discloses Cole's bloodline before he teleports most of the Earthrealm fighters to the Void, a safe space between realms. Lao, however, sacrifices himself defending Cole.
Cole proposes a plan to force Outworld's champions into a single combat with those from the Earthrealm before neutralizing Sub-Zero together, forcing the tournament that Shang Tsung tried to prevent. Agreeing with the plan, Raiden gives Cole Hanzo's kunai, which still has Hanzo's blood on it, telling him that using it would get Hanzo's spirit to fight alongside him. Raiden transports Cole and his allies to their targets. While defeating Outworld's champions, Sonya kills Kano and acquires his dragon mark, while also getting the ability to fire purple energy blasts as her own arcana, which she also uses to kill Mileena. Sub-Zero abducts Cole's family to lure him into a one-on-one fight. Overpowered by Sub-Zero, Cole uses the kunai and drains Hanzo's blood left on it, releasing Hanzo as the vengeful specter, Scorpion. Recognizing Cole as his descendant, Scorpion helps him defeat Sub-Zero and free his family before immolating Sub-Zero with hellfire. Thanking Cole for freeing him and requesting that he take care of the Hasashi bloodline, Scorpion departs as Raiden, the other champions, and Shang Tsung arrive.
Shang Tsung vows revenge as he sends his champions' corpses back to Outworld before Raiden banishes him. Raiden declares his intention to train new warriors in preparation for the next tournament and assigns his current champions to recruit them. Cole then departs to Los Angeles in search of Hollywood martial artist and movie star, Johnny Cage.
Review:
As someone who prefers PC games of the military strategy or simulator variety, it’s fair to say I don’t have the greatest familiarity with the Mortal Kombat franchise, but it’s not something I’m a stranger to, either.  I grew up playing Mortal Kombat II with my older brothers on our old Commodore Amiga despite being too young by the age-rating systems later introduced due largely to this game series, as like a lot of kids who grew up in the 90’s, I also watched the decidedly toned-down animated series that was Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm.
Based on this childhood nostalgia for the world of Mortal Kombat, the idea that films were being created in the here and now to reflect the franchise piqued my curiosity, so when this film came out on blu-ray, I bought it along with last year’s direct-to-home release animated Mortal Kombat films (which will be the next film I review after this one).  Given my relative lack of familiarity with the later incarnations of Mortal Kombat, I came to this film at a kind of tipping-point between the expert fan and the new audience member, trying as best I could to judge how the film would play to both groups while not really being in either myself.
To my mind, a good first instalment in a Mortal Kombat film franchise needs to get three things in it and done right; the tournament itself and sufficient background exposition to explain it, a decent Fatality count to honour the very concept of the game, and accurate representation of the game’s longest-lasting and most iconic characters.  The first point is one the film only goes some way towards managing; the tournament of Mortal Kombat is mentioned and aspects of it are explained, but no origin is provided for it.  Game fans probably won’t mind this and may not need it, but the new fans coming into the lore through this film would need it.
I imagine that like Star Wars, the powers-that-be probably think it’s not necessary to provide an origin for the whole concept within the continuity itself, but I disagree.  An origin, a proper backstory, adds context that better explains why the villains are villains.  Not every villain is meant to be like Batman’s Joker, a force of true evil and pure chaos that is best left unexplained to avoid humanising them and making them relatable.  In fact, most villains outside of a computer game fall flat, and it makes it difficult for new viewers to understand the stakes involved.  Ok, Shang Tsung and the Outworld crew want to enslave Earth – why? What does enslaving the Earth get them? Are they after it for our population, our resources, bragging rights – what?  This is often why adapting games into films is a bad idea; games can work without a lot of plot detail, films can’t.
Second, the film seems to baulk at racking up much of a main character kill-count.  This is a problem that was also experienced in the DCEU when they did the first live-action Suicide Squad film.  Like this reboot, that film was also a Warner Brothers live-action film, and both are beaten in this department by counter-parts made by Warner Brothers Animation.  It feels like the studio’s live-action productions are being run by people who don’t get how to do adaptational work correctly.  If a franchise is defined by named characters dying, then you can’t be too squeamish about killing them.  There’s only about one death on the side of the good guys versus a lot of death, largely delayed, on the side of the villains (I discount what happens to the guy who becomes Scorpion from this as he’s very much an anti-hero by the standards of the franchise, and it’s the one “death” that’s never going to stick). I think the film needed more run-time for both exposition and a higher death-toll.
Third, there’s the matter of character accuracy. In terms of the characters I know, most are faithfully handled, but I dislike the costume designs on the ninja outfits worn by Sub-Zero and Scorpion.  Remember how everyone hated Zack Snyder for toning down the costume colours for Superman in the DCEU?  Well at least you could still tell the colours were just toned-down versions of what Superman should look like.  In Sub-Zero’s case, there’s not a single iota of blue anywhere on his costume, and there’s no real attempt to honour the fact that the two characters were originally re-colours of one another.  Had I been making this film, I’d have given them outwardly similar costumes but worked differences into the details, and Sub-Zero would have sported the blue colour in his costume that he should do.
Granted, I know the game series has tried to move away from the recolour concept for character creation, but to my mind it’s something that should be honoured for two reasons.  First, it’s an iconic part of the series’ history, especially for anyone who played the earliest games as I did.  Second, I think that while most character in the series look different outwardly, when you look at them more closely, they become a bit similar, almost to the point of being easily interchangeable.  If they have a very similar initial character design to start with, however, I think more work gets done to distinguish them from each other beneath the surface.  That, in turn, adds depth and resonance to their appearances and their fights that other characters lack.
Beyond these issues, I’m also unimpressed with the audience-POV character of Cole Young.  At first, he seemed like a decent addition brought in as perhaps a more relatable character than some other existing candidates, and I thought the idea of him being descended from an original core character of the franchise was an interesting choice.  However, the moment I became thoroughly uninvested in the character was it turned out his powers were all derived from a little bracelet his daughter made for him. I mean seriously, how cliché, saccharine and just plain un-Mortal Kombat can you get?  The chap might as well grow fur and get a rainbow laser in his chest. If there’s one thing a Mortal Kombat film doesn’t need, it’s a bunch of touchy-feely b.s. like this.  The powers should have either been something else more in keeping with the brutality and seriousness Mortal Kombat demands, or they should have used another character that already exists within the franchise to act as the audience POV.
All this said, the film does honour a lot of what the games are about, and the action is excellent, though I could do with the actor who plays Raiden diluting his accent a bit when speaking in English. At times he was impossible to understand without subtitles.  Overall, I think this is a half-decent start to a new live-action Mortal Kombat film franchise, but it has significant flaws to correct before it really nails the game in film format.  In other words, we need more colourful and similar-looking versions of Scorpion and Sub-Zero in the sequel, Cole Young needs to be killed off, the death toll needs to be higher, and we need to both get to the tournament and learn about its origins.  Overall, this reboot as is just earns a modest 6 out of 10.

The Room Where It Happens: No Pairing
Normally I don’t post stories that deal with so many potentially triggering things and I also don’t normally post stories that are about the Hamilton cast. Normally what I write is fluffy and is about the Hamilton Characters, rather than the people playing them. I’ll post fluffier stuff after this. I'm really worried about the reaction to this one but here we go!
Warnings: descriptions of abuse, dysfunctional family, abusive family, negligence, messed up home life, descriptions of injury (bruises and the pain resulting from it), a bit of self doubt, the reader is hugged/ starts a group hug so please avoid this if that’ll negatively effect you. I hope the bold works, my HTML skills are very rusty.
You absolutely loving dancing in Hamilton. You could barely believe it when you were told that you got the role. You had needed to get a job soon and knowing that you now had a job, make life a bit easier.
Less stress equalled a more happier you. Unfortunately, there were still things you were stressed about, things that would stay with you even after the stressor was gone.
You’d only recently moved to New York so you were shocked when you got the first job you’d applied for. You hadn’t had any experience in musical theater but the people who cast you apparently saw potential in you.
You couldn’t believe that you’d managed to get a job on an off broadway production. You had thought that you would end up at a small dance studio and maybe work your way up through there. Dancing had been and still was your passion. You knew that dancing and singing was what you wanted to do ever since you were seven. Somehow, the amazement and thrill of dancing stayed with you to this day.
But now you were starting to second guess yourself. You had no idea what to expect and today was the first day of rehearsal for the choreography. You knew the steps from watching videos Lin had sent you. You knew that everyone else was going to be much better than you because they had gotten to practice it more than you had. A few days after you got the call, you decided to call in sick for the first week of practice.
You had been living with your mom for almost a year after your landlord decided to kick you out. Thirty days after you received that notice, you still hadn’t found anywhere to live. Your mom had graciously decided to offer you the spare bedroom at her house which you accepted.
(Descriptions of abuse start here, I’ll add in another bolder section after it ends)
The first night is when you should have just left. Your mom had been cooking food and once she finished cooking the food, she ate it without telling you dinner was ready. When you went to check up on the food, you had smelt it cooking from upstairs, you found that there wasn’t any food left. When you asked why there wasn’t any food left, she apologized and said that she forgot she wasn’t living alone any more.
This happened a couple more times at dinner and when you expressed your annoyance, she told you that you were old enough to make your own dinner.
So you did. You made dinner about a half hour after she made her own dinner. Yet after you ate it, she yelled at you for not making some for her.
You knew now that you should have left then but at the time you had wrote it off as her trying to get used to someone else living with her.
You hadn’t given it much thought until you got into an argument and she pushed you, causing you to fall and land on the coffee table. Somehow the coffee table held as you laid there, trying to regain the air that has been knocked out of your lungs.
She had rushed toward you, concern painted all over her face as she tried to help you up.
You accepted her help, afraid that waving her off would only make her angrier.
As soon as she left the house, you gathered up everything you could take with you and left. You traveled aimlessly for a while before finding yourself in New York. Deciding that this would be a good place to start over, you found a cheap place to live and began your job search.
(Descriptions of abuse are mainly over but mentions and descriptions of bruises and pain lay ahead)
That was several weeks ago which leads back to this moment of you standing outside the rehearsal studio, nervous. You knew the bruises along your side weren’t gone yet but you also knew that if you didn’t show up to work soon, you could loose your job.
Taking a deep breath, you pushed open the door and walked into the room. You smiled at seeing that your sweatpants and tank top were not out of place along the others.
The group in the room turned to look toward you, some smiling and others focused more on stretching.
A man walked toward you and stuck out his hand. Smiling he said, “Hi! You must be Y/N. I’m Lin, I wrote this musical and I’m going to be performing as Hamilton. I hope you are feeling better!”
You smiled at the man and nodded, reaching out to shake his hand. “I’m not quite one hundred percent yet but I’m too excited to miss any more days of work.”
Lin laughed at that and replied, “Well if you need to take a break during practice, feel free to. You didn’t have to come back yet if you didn’t feel good but if you want to stay, then let’s do this.”
The next few hours of rehearsal was both a lot of work and fun at the same time.
Finally you had got to Yorktown and you swallowed nervously. The previous songs you’d gone over hadn’t been too hard on your side but now you were worried. You had seen the videos and you were certain that this song would hurt.
You hadn’t been wrong. You had managed to get about halfway through the song before you stopped in place, doubled over, pain flaring through your side.
The music stopped and you heard someone walk over to you. The person said, “Y/N are you ok?” You recognized the voice as Lin but you still flinched when he gently placed his hand on your shoulder.
His hand dropped from your shoulder and he whispered an apology.
You shook your head and slowly straightened up, unconsciously grabbing your side as you slowly got back into correct posture. You frowned when you saw his concerned face, blurred slightly because of tears. You blinked a couple of times, trying to get rid of the tears.
As much as you tried, the tears still won out and fell down your face, making tiny splashes on the floor.
Despite the fact that you said “I’m fine”, he didn’t seem convinced. You looked over his shoulder to see the rest of the group watching you.
Just now realizing you had your hand on your side, you let it drop back to rest.
You looked back at Lin, him and the others seemed concerned.
With a shaky sigh, you stepped back so that you were in full view of the others.
(Note, in the next small section, the reader pulls their shirt up to show the cast the bruises, please don’t read if that’ll effect you negatively. I’ll add another note once that section is over)
You whispered, just barely loud enough for everyone to hear, “this is why I couldn’t come into work until now,” and with that you pulled up on side of your tank top. You held it there for a few seconds as you watched everyone register what it meant, before you dropped the edge of your top back down.
(Ok, that’s the end of that section, however the reader recounts what happened with their mom in the next section so beware of that)
In a bit of a louder voice, although still shaky, you continued, “My crappy landlord kicked me out and I couldn’t find another place to live in time. My mom offered me her spare bedroom rent free and I agreed.” Tears yet again formed and fell as you shakily inhaled to continue. “She,” you formed air quotes around the next word, “‘forgot’ to make me dinner and when I made my own dinner, she yelled at me for not making her some. And when we got into an argument, this happened. I left as soon as I could and I ended up here.”
(Recount of events are now over, a group hug takes place in the last paragraph)
A tissue found its way into you hand and you wiped your eyes as best you could.
Several others were also in tears and there was a couple more people sobbing into other’s arms.
You could barely manage to look at the others until Lin spoke up. “Y/N, take all the time off that you need to heal. I know this is the first day that you were able to be here but we’ve all sort of became a family. This means that you’re a part of that family and we all care about you. If you ever need a place to stay, I have a couch you can use. Vanessa would be glad to help you in any way she can.”
Others seconded that statement, voicing their thoughts as well. Statements of, “I also have a spare couch”, “my uncle owns an apartment building, I could get you a discount if you need a place to stay”, and “I don’t have a place to offer but I’m good at hugs if you need one,” rang through the room.
Bursting into tears again, you held out your arms for a hug, soon you were in the middle of a group hug, feeling better than you had in weeks. Smiling to yourself, you thought that this was where you were meant to be.

How Photographers Should Answer the Question “Can I Get A Discount If…?”
Over the 15 years that I have worked as a wedding photographer, I’ve been asked some pretty interesting questions by potential clients when it comes to the negotiations about PRICE.
Today, I want to talk about just three of the more common questions that begin with “can we get a discount if…?”
I would, of course, love to hear your own comments on this topic; if you have any stories and/or tips of your own to share, please do!
DISCLAIMER: I do not condone the “shaming” of any clients under any circumstance, and I am strongly opposed to the “outing” of a specific person, for both moral and legal reasons. Or, just call it Karma?
Most clients ask these types of questions out of genuine curiosity or maybe naiveté, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Some clients just love to negotiate, even aggressively sometimes, and I get that too. Some people just enjoy the thrill of bargaining.
I never see it as an insult to my own value as an artist or a service provider, either. Asking for a discount is just something that some folks feel compelled to do.
Alright, without any further ado, here are my top three “Can we get a discount if…?” questions. Please feel free to chime in below in the comments with your own stories, and tips on how you deal with the questions!
Wedding Pricing Question #1: removing package items
“Can we get a discount if you remove [the engagement session, the album,  print credit, etc.] from this package?”
My go-to response to this question is usually something along the lines of:
“Unfortunately that’s not an offer I can make, simply because the price  of the package already represents a considerable savings.”
It’s that simple! No need to elaborate further, unless the client persists. If you’ve correctly priced both your packages, and the a-la-carte items that go into them, then any single item someone might ask to remove is probably almost “free” already.
We use Fundy to design our albums – www.fundydesigner.com
As a vague example, you can’t remove a $500 print/album credit, if the package already represents $500 in savings compared to the a-la-carte pricing of your hourly coverage rate! You’d actually be giving the client a $1000 discount.
Alternately, if they’re asking to remove a rather large item from the package, then you should simply suggest they consider the next package down.
(NOTE: If removing a large package item reveals that a client is in fact NOT getting a discount compared to a lower package, then you are not pricing your services and products correctly! To learn how to price your services and products correctly, check out or Photography Business Pricing Workshop in the SLR Lounge store, or consider a Premium Membership.)
If potential clients are asking this question about your most affordable package, you may want to respond with “this is simply the minimum amount that I can afford to do business at.” Usually, when you put it this way, a client will have to respect your firmness, even if they decide they can’t afford your price.
At a certain point, however, you may get a sense of whether or not this is the type of client you want to do business with at all. In other words, plenty of great clients may ask this question out of sheer curiosity, and that’s fine! But, if you sense that the negotiation is deteriorating from “curiosity” to “low-ball” …then I’d recommend simply drawing the line somewhere, and suggesting that they think it over for a day or two. As the saying goes, you can’t win ’em all.
Wedding Pricing Question #2: The Value of a Saturday
This next question sometimes comes as a result of my response to another question about why I charge a retainer/booking fee. (My message being, that Saturdays are extremely valuable to a wedding photographer, since almost everybody gets married on a saturday, and there are only so many Saturdays each year!) But, I digress. Here is what some clients ask…
“If your Saturdays are so “in-demand”, can we get a discount if we get married on a Sunday, a Friday, …or even a Monday etc?”
This may seem like an odd question to anyone who is new to wedding photography, but trust me, it will pop up at least a few times in your career! In fact, some venues may indeed offer non-Saturday discounts. This is why you sometimes have couples getting married on a Wednesday!
Or, it may be an auspicious date, such as 7/7/7. Wow, that was one heck of a busy date for inquiries! If you were a wedding photographer in 2007, then you’ll probably remember that date. (I guess the number seven is everybody’s lucky number!)
Anyways, here is the quick, easy response:
“With photography, the luxury of knowing your date is almost completely safe from being “taken” is the main benefit of paying a booking fee in advance. The price is the same because I’m always going to put the same amount of energy, passion, and hard work into each and every client who books me, no matter when their wedding is.”
The client may respond to this by insisting that if they have their wedding on a Wednesday, that means you’re still free to book Saturdays before and after that. Plus, nobody else is likely to book the same date, (unless it is an auspicious number!) …so, why should they bother to reserve you?
Again, mention the amount of hard work that you’re going to put into each event, and the fact that you simply can’t promise your availability any day of the week, even a weekday. Heck, weekdays are a prime time for us wedding photographers to take a quick 3-4 day vacation, too!

Also, if anything, it’s actually more difficult to fit an additional wedding into your week, because it increases the workload if you have a rigid 1-2 week turn-around time for photos, and you do all your own post-production.
Personally? After 15 years as a wedding photographer, I’m almost inclined to charge MORE for a wedding on a Sunday, if I already have a big one booked for the preceding Saturday! Working a 12-14+ hour day can be a huge physical drain, and “bringing your A-game” two days in a row is an even greater challenge. To be quite honest, I don’t know about you but I really like to sleep in on Sunday morning after getting home at 2/3 AM from an all-day gig!
Of course, this one is also up to you. If you’re physically fit and have tons of energy, and/or if you out-source your post-production, or have the help of a studio manager/post-producer, then maybe your Monday-Friday 9-5 schedule isn’t a problem, so it’s no big deal to offer a slight discount for a weekday wedding. Your call!
Wedding Pricing Question #3: Up-Front / Cash Discount
“Can we get a discount if we pay in cash? Can we get a discount if we pay in full right now?”
This one is even more up to YOU, fellow professionals! To me, however, the word “cash” does NOT mean “tax-free”. I run a legitimate business, and I’d like to be able to sleep at night if I ever find myself bumped into a higher tax bracket and getting audited. ;-)
However, cash is still awesome! It can go into my bank account right then and there without waiting for a check to clear, without paying a credit card processing fee, etc.
So, if you’re in a good mood, or if you’re in a tight spot and cash-in-hand would be really great, there’s no reason to feel like you’re being “shady”, or selling yourself too cheaply, for allowing a (small) negotiation on price. Personally, I wouldn’t offer more than a single percent or two, and no more than a few percent depending on the total package price.
However, if you are so desperate for cash flow that you’re considering doing a 5-10% discount, then you might really be in a tight spot. This might be OK once or twice in your whole career, however if it’s a common occurrence then you have a real problem, period. You should strongly consider setting up a clear business plan, and maybe even hiring someone else to do your sales, and/or manage your finances.
To learn how our studio, Lin & Jirsa photography, went from being a small 3-man business to one of the largest wedding studios in the country, check out or Business Courses in the SLR Lounge store, or consider a Premium Membership.)
Having said that, clients are often more likely to spend even more if they use a credit card, so by offering a cash discount you might be leaving a LOT MORE money on the table than you think you are!
Wedding Photography Pricing Q&A | Conclusion
If you’re just starting to get into wedding or another market of professional photography, and you have any other pricing questions, we’d love to hear them!
The absolute best way to improve your business’ chance of success is to widen your knowledge base and keep an eye on things like your profit margins, overhead costs, etc. So, the next time a potential client asks “can I get a discount if…?” …consider your real-world, per-job CODB (Cost of Doing Business) before you worry about pleasing a bargain shopper.
Of course, this article is just a tiny collection of experiences that I’ve had as a full-time wedding photographer, and thought other aspiring wedding photographers might enjoy reading about. Setting your complete pricing, and interacting with each client during the booking/negotiation process, is an advanced skill that requires extensive training to master! My car insurance rate is ridicules. why?

My premium was only 260 or so for the whole year, whiche came out to 40 bucks or so a month. ive since bought a new car (2013 nissan versa) and switched it with my old car. my monthly payment only went up 4 or 5 bucks as a result. This rate is fricking great and i have no problems. however, when i go to refinance (for lack of a better word) my insurance or simply shop around, for some reason the quotes they give me skyrockets my payments to 260+ a month!! the same is for other insurance providers aswell, even the insurance offered by my bank! what gives? why the huge leap? i have a clean record (no accidents ever, last speeding ticket was 4+ years ago), what was at the time, a brand new car, aswell as a better job (was working in a restaurant, now at a lawfirm). The problem we have is that our motability car goes back in October. We're in a rural location so we need a car ready for when the switch over happens. At present with the motability insurance their insurance only insures one vehicle, the motability one, and can't have additional vehicles added to it. We've got a few quotes from insurance companies who have told us that when the motability lease expires they will give us the no claim discount based on the motabiity insurance, but they wont give us that discount until the motability car goes back. So what we want to do is get the new car before October, put it on the drive, check everything is ok with it, and then insure it when we start using it on the road when the motability vehicle goes back. Only problem is with this new law we can't do that without declaring the vehicle SORN. Some of the vehicles we've seen come with a few months road tax, so we don't really want to lose that by declaring it SORN, just for a few weeks (or is the tax disc still valid when you remove the SORN on the car?), we also don't want to insure the vehicle before the motability vehicle goes back as we wont get any NCB from the new insurer and that will cost us about an extra 500 in insurance (our current insurance price is about 500-600 but with 0 years no claims it goes up to around 1,000-1,100 - we have 3 years no claims with motability and I've held my driving licence for 6 years). I've read that you don't need this compulsory insurance if the vehicle is in trade, or between registered owners. That is one option, but how long after you buy a vehicle can you keep it in that status, would we be able to keep it like that for a few weeks or is it pretty much instant when we get the car. Obviously I realise I would need some kind of temporary one day insurance to drive the vehicle home after purchase.""

What good are healthcare insurance brokers?
I called one two weeks ago & he was going to email me different quotes. He never bothered to, and so I called him & asked where they were. He said he forgot. Meanwhile I called another health care insurance broker & she too sent me some quotes. I attempted on line to apply for one, but there was a problem with the form allowing me to go further. I not only called the broker like she said I could if there was a problem, but I also emailed her about the problem. She didn't return my phone call, and as of yet has answered my email. It seems to me they must not want to make a commission, so is it just best to contact the health insurance companies on their own? In the past a broker was able to tell me if I would qualify if there would be a mark up above standard rates. Now they say just apply on line and see what happens. Everything has to be on line which always obviously doesn't work. So, what good are health insurance brokers? They need to just do away with them if they aren't going to work.""

Low Cost Health Insurance (Indiana)?

What to do when health insurance company won't cover surgery?
We just recently got health insurance a few weeks ago. My husband was diagnosed with a double inguinal hernia yesterday and is scheduled for surgery Friday. Our insurance company will not cover the surgery., They said that hernia surgery has a 6 month waiting period and he can not wait another week let alone 6 months. They will only cover it if it is a life or death situation.I could take him back out to the ER, but who's to say that they will say that it is an emergency and do it within 24 hours? I put a call in to the financial aid counselor to see about getting help with the surgery bill, although we are most likely going to be unable to pay big amounts of money. Is there any insurance companies we can sign up for in order to have health insurance and be able to have him get the surgery by Friday? Or is there anything else we can do? Car insurance for husband and wife.?
Recently I went to insure my daughter and her car in the company me and my wife have been insured for some time. I wanted to include myself in her insurance but it went up in premiums a lot and we decided to insure her without me as an additional driver. Before that (last year to be exact) I insured my wife and I was included as a second driver. Basically, I was advised to do so on the basis that it would be cheaper. I heard about this option before and therefore did not check it properly with this company. This time (with my daughter) this option went an opposite way with higher premiums, so I asked them whether I can exclude myself from my wife's insurance as well because my insurance allows me to drive any car, but was told: ...because you are husband and wife, by law you cannot drive her car without being included in her insurance policy whatsoever... I am suspicious about this statement now and feel that I am being cheated. Does anybody know whether this rule exist or is it just the usual salesmen lie? Thank you.""

Why do people keep comparing health insurance mandates to car insurance mandates?
Car insurance mandates are done at the STATE level, in accordance with the Tenth Amendment of the U.S. constitution. Yet people (the president included) continue to claim that a FEDERAL mandate to buy insurance is no different than being required to cover your car. (Completely ignoring that you have to BUY a car before you must get insurance...the govt's basically saying they own your body...insure it or be taxed) So isn't a FEDERAL mandate unconstitutional unless you plan on writing an amendment to the Constitution so that such a mandate is in accordance with the Tenth Amendment?? http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0909/27384.html The questions from ABCs George Stephanopoulos highlighted a politically dangerous new aspect of the health reform debate for Obama  as critics from Republican leaders to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce say his reform proposals amount to a middle-class tax increase. Obama promised during the campaign that Americans earning less than $250,000 a year would not see any tax increases from an Obama administration. Obama strongly denied that the mandate amounts to a tax increase  saying it was no different than requiring people to have auto insurance and charging a penalty if they dont. He also said it was important for everyone to have insurance so that people who do carry insurance dont have to shoulder the load for people who dont. The excise tax is designed as an enforcement mechanism to ensure people will carry insurance.""

Auto insurance involuntarily cancelled?

I get a involuntary cancellation of the auto insurance policy after a couple of days. Can someone explain the difference between Health Insurance and any other Insurance?
I don't understand why people act like health insurance is so radically differently than other insurance. Is it? Insurance is a form of risk management to hedge against loss. Auto, Life, Homeowners, Unemployment and Health are among the types of insurance you can buy. I'm generally not required to buy any of those insurances. If I have the title to my home, I'm not required to have homeowners insurance. If I don't drive a car, I'm not required to carry auto insurance. Why should I be forced to buy health insurance? If I want to take that or any gamble by not buying insurance, isn't that my choice? I will admit that by not purchasing health insurance, I could be putting a burden on others if I was admitted to the ER and couldn't pay, that burden of payment would fall on others. HOWEVER, that burden would be there whether I was forced to carry insurance or not. If I don't make enough money to buy this mandatory insurance, then the gov't will give me tax credits to purchase insurance. Who's paying for those tax credits? All of the tax payers. So either we pay the providers/insurance companies via higher premiums to cover loss, or we pay the gov't via taxes. Forcing (perhaps unconstitutionally) citizens to purchase health insurance won't solve anything, it will just move where the cost is incurred. But please, explain why people are treating health insurance so differently.""

Car insurance problems?!?
So I've had my license since I was 18 and now I'm 21, my boyfriend has always just let me use vehicles that he would give me that are registered in his name and on his insurance and I already know someone is going to point out its a bad idea I don't have my own vehicle, we have been together 5 years and haven't had a problem, but recently when I was driving my truck, registered and insured by him, some senile old woman pulled out around 8 feet in front of me and stopped right in the middle of the road so her whole car was right in my lane and the back end of her car was still sort of on the road she was pulling out of, I slammed on my breaks and when I realized I wasn't stopping I turned my wheel as hard as I could so I didn't hit her and I ended up just catching the end of her car and totalled mine by hitting the stop sign and about 4 trees on the road she was coming out of because of the fact that I was driving my boyfriend's insured vehicle and me and him live together, his insurance automatically added me to his policy which caused it to sky rocket from $190/mo. to over $400/mo. I was wondering if he should try to switch companies, or just keep me on his insurance whether he switches or not ?""

Why is classic car insurance more?
For a teen I mean. I know these types of cars need special insurance companies but these special companies don't take 18 year old drivers. Though it is still called a sports coupe . so I was curious and got a quote and they quoted me $550 a month. strange thing is my friend drives an 04 rsx that's standard (the camaro is auto) and pays the same rate monthly under his parents. What are the factors that determine these rates? safety? engine size? the amount of damage they do? I had a 03 civic coupe (standard) briefly and was paying $260 a month under my parents insurance. According to the insurance company, all these cars are considered sports cars and therefore have higher rates however they would not tell me the reasons why and that is what I am here to ask.""

Apple iPads, Android Windows and the Rest of the World

Apple iPads, Android Windows and the Rest of the World
A truly tectonic shift in how we use computers is happening right now, and I’ll bet it’s happening within 30 feet of where you are while you read this.
What is this shift? Powerful, portable, user-friendly mobile computing in the form of a touch screen tablet PC. You can bet that no matter where you are in a developed country you’ll be no more than 30 feet away from someone with a touch screen device of some description.
And what’s more, given the recent advances in hardware and software, those people may actually be able to use their devices for something useful!
You see, it’s all about the power. well ‘power consumption’ to be more exact
Early attempts at true mobile touch screen computing were rather lacked luster. The Windows Operating system was used almost exclusively, and whilst touchscreen support was added to later versions there were two MAJOR problems.
1) The Windows desktop OS was a huge power-hungry monster… OK so maybe that is a little harsh. But the truth of the matter was that when you combined the Windows OS with the X86 platform it is tied too, you could not produce a thin, light and powerful device that could:
a. Provide decent video playback, let alone play HD video. b. Play any kind of proper 3D game.
This meant that most early attempts were either heavy, chunky hot slabs of processing power or they were completely underpowered and almost unusable.
2) Windows was never designed from the start as a touch screen OS for mobile devices. No matter how hard you tried it always felt that you were using an OS that had been forced onto a tablet PC, and had then had touch screen support bolted on like an oversized exhaust from you local motorist discount center.
The situation looked pretty grim and it was set to continue in this manner until the first iPad hit the shelves.
Apple had created a masterpiece. By not using the x86 platform (ARM Risk processors were used instead) and by designing an OS from the ground up, Apple had created a device that could do almost everything anyone could want on a mobile device.
You could browse the web, read your emails, watch a film, almost anything the average user could want to do they could now do on a handheld device that didn’t need it own portable nuclear reactor to power.
What’s more, the device was built to high standards and had a user-friendly and easy to understand interface. It was almost as if the device actually wanted you to use it. It was certainly years ahead of the previous attempts based on Windows.
The fact that it didn’t run windows would have been a problem for just about anyone other than Apple. Apple already had its own ‘Apple Universe’ thing going on and it could integrate the iPad into that universe. This universe has existed for years without needing to be compromised to work with Windows and its x86 architecture (although granted Mac OS can now run on x86 hardware).
The iPad represented a way for Apple to hook people into the Apple universe. The iPod, the iPhone, these devices too were all a way to hook people into the Apple universe.
For several years the iPad had been THE choice for a mobile touch screen device, with a slick front end and a quality feel.
The iPad owes it success largely to the fact that the platform is the sealed, tightly controlled and polished product of one organization. The whole platform is tightly controlled by Apple from the hardware spec, to the OS build and even to a degree the Apps that third parties write for it (via control of the SDK with a refusal to support any other runtimes like Adobe Flash).
But this is where the problems start; this control ends up restricting the platform. There is a reason one of the iPads catch phrases is ‘There’s an App for that’. It’s because there has to be an app for everything. If you want to watch BBC I-player you can’t do it through a browser, you have to use an App. The same is true of ITV Catchup service among others.
You can’t use any browser-based flash games, and you can’t access YouTube through the browser.
This control has also been turning software developers off of the platform in recent times, although the significant revenue’s that people can earn writing software of the iPad has kept this in check for the moment.
Into this picture emerges a very unlikely combination, one whose vague happening could have been predicted several years ago, but its specific form could not have been foreseen.
For years I have been saying that no one is ever going to break the dominance of Microsoft by tackling them head on. Apple has tried for years and they have hardly dented Microsoft’s revenues. In fact, Apple has probably helped Microsoft by giving Microsoft someone to hold up as an example of competition every time they are threatened with a break-up because they are too big.
Any rival will have to grow up in a parallel technology sector and then combine with others in the same position to generate the ‘critical mass’ required to take on Microsoft in its dominant markets.
Well, this is happening now, and who are these new players..? Google, Nvidia and about a thousand manufacturers of all different sizes and shapes.
For several years Nvidia has been working on a new hardware platform called Tegra 2. The Tegra platform has always been aimed at mobile hand-held devices with a slant on video performance. However, after seeing the success of the iPad and the potential for hand-held touch screen computing Nvidia shifted the Tegra platform up a few gears.
Nvidia teamed up with ARM to create an ultra low power, yet powerful processing platform.
The Tegra 2 platform is basically a dual-core version the iPad processor which has been advanced a generation on. In addition, it has been combined with an advanced graphics accelerator designed by Nvidia especially for the platform, as well as other specially designed processors to handle tasks like HD video encoding/decoding.
As a hardware platform, it blows all previous attempts at mobile touch screen computing out of the water… literally. It’s so far ahead that if the Tegra 2 platform was taking part in an Olympic race with the other offerings (Windows+X86 ,Android and Apple) then after the event it would be forced to take a test for performance enhancing drugs and have its gender verified.
Even the iPad 2 cannot compete on raw power with a Tegra 2 device.
What’s more, Tegra 3 has already completed design and it is ready to go into manufacturing, plus Tegra 4 is apparently in an advanced design phase. Tegra 3 (quad-core anyone?) is going to make Tegra 2 look seriously underpowered (even though it isn’t), and Tegra 4 seems to be verging on the edge of science fiction.
So surely that’s it then, any device based on a Tegra 2 platform is the best mobile device going and no one should bother buying anything else?? Well no, it’s not quite that simple.
Why isn’t it that simple? Well for starters Tegra 2, 3 and 4 are just hardware platforms, you need software to run on them.
That’s where Google and the Android OS come in… rise oh slayer of Microsoft! (A bit too ahead of the curve on that prediction? Let’s wait and see on that one then, but the potential is there).
Android started as an OS for Mobile phones. So it was designed (like the OS on the iPad) with as small a footprint as possible and touch screens in mind. It is also VERY flexible as it was designed to run on a huge variety of devices.
Unlike the iPad OS, it is also very open, with the source code being released to the public (otherwise known as ‘open source’). This flexibility has one big downside and one big upside.
On the downside, the Android OS is not as slick as the OS on the iPad. It’s a little harder to use and it always feels a bit cruder. In certain areas, it may even be a little slower to respond even though the hardware is hugely superior when running on Tegra 2.
On the plus side, the openness has strapped a big rocket to the development of the Android OS and the last 2 months has lit the touch-paper.
We now see a huge Android community growing up around Tegra-powered Android devices from all manner of manufacturers. We are going to see some major game releases for the Tegra + Android platform really soon (including direct ports of several PS3 titles), and there are quite a number of game studios that are backing Tegra + Android.
What’s more, there are a huge number of Apps available for both Android and iPad now through their respective markets. You can be fairly certain that no matter which one you buy, there is an app to do whatever it is you are looking for an app to do.
So what does all this mean? How could you fairly sum up the current state of mobile touch screen computing? Which device is best now? Which has the most promise and future potential?
If you want to recommend a device for your parents who just want a quality device to browse the web, read emails and play solitaire on, tell them to go and get an iPad. Its ease of use, solid quality and reliable performance just can’t be beaten at the moment.
If you are on a budget and you want a powerful and flexible device and you don’t mind a few rough edges then go and get a Tegra 2+Android 2.2 tablet like the Advent Vega or the Point of View Mobii. If you are willing to do some reading and explore what the android community offers to get the most from these devices (custom software including the Cyanogen ROM (android 2.3)and resources like you will end up with a device that is FAR more capable and polished than its price tag suggests.
If you don’t want an iPad, but you still want something slick with a quality feel, then don’t buy anything now. Wait until the new generation of Android 3.0 tablets are properly released and have been out for a few months, then go and spend around 450 on one with a Tegra 2 chipset.
And if you want an iPad 2..? I honestly cannot think of any reason why you would spend that much money on an iPad 2, seriously I can’t. Unless perhaps you were just a huge Apple fan.
As for the future? Those of us old enough to remember the battle between Microsoft and Apple already know what’s coming. I firmly predict that Apple will make all the same mistakes again. They will put the ideology of the ‘Apple Universe’ and the perfection they aim for above openness and they will get left behind in the great tablet race.
For those that are too young to remember the Microsoft vs. Apple battle, watch this closely and you are about to see history repeating itself.
This will be a big shame because when it comes to ergonomics and ease of use apple is currently ahead, although this lead is shrinking a little each.

Windows,IPads, Android,Hardware and the Relaxation of the world
A really tectonic shift in how we use computer systems is occurring properly now, and I will wager it’s happening inside 30 feet of in which you are whilst you study this.
What is this shift? Effective, transportable, person-pleasant mobile computing within the shape of a hint screen pill Pc. You could guess that no matter where you’re in a evolved county you may be no more than 30 toes far from a person with a hint display screen tool of some description.
And what’s extra, given the latest advances in computer hardware and software, those people may also simply be able to use their devices for something beneficial!
You see, it’s all about the electricity.. nicely ‘electricity intake’ to be greater actual
Early attempts at proper cellular contact screen computing were instead lackluster. The Windows Working gadget changed into used almost solely, and while contact display support became brought to later versions there have been Primary problems.
1) The Windows computing device OS becomes a massive electricity-hungry monster… Ok so perhaps that is a little harsh. But the truth of the matter became that when you mixed the Home windows OS with the X86 platform it is tied too, you couldn’t produce a thin, light and Powerful tool that might:
a. Offer decent video playback, not to mention play HD video. B. Play any kind of right 3-d recreation.
This meant that maximum early tries had been either heavy, the chunky warm slab of processing strength, or they have been completely underpowered and nearly unusable.
2) Home windows became in no way designed from the start as a hint screen OS for cell devices. irrespective of how difficult you tried it always felt that you had been using an OS that was forced onto a pill Computer, and had then had touch display support bolted on like an oversized exhaust from you nearby motorist discount center.
The state of affairs seemed pretty grim and it became set to hold in this way until the primary iPad hit the cabinets.
Apple had created a masterpiece. By using not the use of the x86 platform (ARM Threat processors have been used rather) and By means of designing an OS from the floor up, Apple had created a device that would do almost everything all and sundry could need a mobile device.
You could browse the internet, examine your emails, watch a film, nearly anything the average person may want to want to do they could now do on a handheld tool that did not want it own transportable nuclear reactor to energy.
what is extra, the tool turned into built to excessive standards and had a consumer-pleasant and clean to recognize the interface. It was almost as though the device, in reality, desired you to apply it. It was without a doubt years in advance of the preceding tries based on Home windows.
The reality that it did not run Home windows might have been a problem for just about every person other than Apple. Apple already had its personal ‘Apple Universe’ factor going on and it may combine the iPad into that universe. This universe has existed for years without having to be compromised to work with Windows and its x86 structure (even though granted Mac OS can now run on x86 computer hardware ).
The iPad represented a manner for Apple to hook people into the Apple universe. The iPod, the iPhone, these gadgets to have been all a way to hook humans into the Apple universe.
For numerous years the iPad have been The choice for a cellular touch display screen device, with a slick front give up and a fine experience.
The iPad owes it achievement largely to the reality that the platform is the sealed, tightly controlled and polished manufactured from one employer. The complete platform is tightly managed By using Apple from the computer hardware  spec to the OS construct and even to some extent the Apps that 1/3 events write for it (thru manager of the SDK with a refusal to support some other run instances like Adobe Flash).
However, this is where the problems begin; this control finally ends up prescribing the platform. There may be a purpose one of the iPads size terms is ‘There may be an App for that’. it is because there needs to be an app for everything. If you need to look at BBC I-player you can not do it thru a browser, you have to use an App. The identical is genuine of ITV seize up provider among others.
You can’t use any browser-based flash video games, and also you can’t access YouTube through the browser.
This control has also been turning software program builders off of the platform in recent times, even though the sizeable sales that human beings can earn writing software program of the iPad has kept this in the test for the moment.
Into this picture emerges a totally not going combination, one whose indistinct occurring could have been anticipated several years ago, However its precise form could not have been foreseen.
For years I’ve been pronouncing that no one is ever going to interrupt the dominance of Microsoft By way of tackling them head on. Apple has tried for years and they have hardly dented Microsoft’s revenues. In truth, Apple has probably helped Microsoft By giving Microsoft someone to maintain up as an instance of opposition every time they’re threatened with a split due to the fact they may be too big.
Any rival will grow up in a parallel era sector, after which integrate with others in the identical role to generate the ‘critical mass’ required to take on Microsoft in its dominant markets.
nicely that is taking place now, and who’re those new gamers..? Google, Nvidia and about a thousand producers of all distinct sizes and shapes.
For several years Nvidia has been working on a brand new computer hardware platform referred to as Tegra 2. The Tegra platform has usually been geared toward mobile gadgets with a slant on video overall performance. But, after seeing the achievement of the iPad and the capacity for touch display screen computing Nvidia shifted the Tegra platform up a few gears.
Nvidia teamed up with ARM to create an extremely low power, yet Powerful processing platform.
The Tegra 2 platform is essentially a twin-core version the iPad processor which has been superior an era on. In addition, it has been mixed with an advanced pictures accelerator designed By using Nvidia especially for the platform, in addition to different in particularly designed processors to address responsibilities like HD video encoding/deciphering.
As a hardware platform, it blows all previous tries at cell touch display screen computing out of the water… literally. It is so far beforehand that if the Tegra 2 platform was taking part in an Olympic race with the other offerings (Windows+X86 and Apple) then after the event it’d be pressured to take a take a look at for performance enhancing pills and feature its gender validated.
Even the iPad 2 can not compete with uncooked electricity with a Tegra 2 device.
what is extra, Tegra three has already completed layout and it is ready to go into production, plus Tegra four is apparently in a complicated layout segment. Tegra three (quad-core absolutely everyone?) goes to make Tegra 2 look critically underpowered (although it isn’t always), and Tegra four appears to be verging on the brink of science fiction.
So honestly it’s it then, any device based on a Tegra 2 platform is the best cell tool going and no one ought to trouble shopping for something else?? well no, it’s no longer quite that simple.
Why isn’t it that easy? nicely for starters Tegra 2, 3 and four are simply computer hardware systems, you need a software program to run on them.
n which Google and the Android OS come in… rise oh slayer of Windows! (A piece too ahead of the curve on that computer hardware  prediction? Allow’s wait and see on that one then, However, the capacity is there).
Android began as an OS for mobile phones. So it became designed (like the OS at the iPad) with as small a footprint as feasible and contact screens in thoughts. It is also VERY bendy because it turned into designed to run on a huge variety of devices.
In contrast to the iPad OS It’s also very open, with the source code being launched to the public (otherwise called ‘open supply’). This adaptability has one massive drawback, and one huge upside.
on the drawback the Android OS is not as slick because the OS at the iPad. it is a touch harder to use and it constantly feels A bit cruder. In certain areas it is able to also be a touch slower to reply despite the fact that the hardware is extremely advanced when running on Tegra 2.
at the plus facet, the openness has strapped a large rocket to the improvement of the Android OS and the remaining 2 months has lit the contact paper.
We now see a large Android community growing up around Tegra-powered Android devices from all way of producers. We’re going to see a few Primary recreation releases for the Tegra + Android platform genuinely quickly (along with direct ports of numerous PS3 titles), and there are quite a number of sport studios that are backing Tegra + Android.
what is greater, there are a massive variety of Apps to be had for each Android and iPad now via their respective markets. You may be fairly certain that no matter which one you buy, There may be an app to do whatever it’s miles you are seeking out an app to do.
So what does all this suggest? How could you fairly sum up the modern nation of mobile touch display computing? Which tool is first-class now? Which has the maximum promise and destiny ability?
In case you need to suggest a device for your parents who just want a high-quality tool to browse the internet, examine emails and play solitaire on, tell them to head and get an iPad. Its ease of use, strong nice and dependable performance just can not be crushed in the intervening time.
In case you are on a budget and also you want an Effective and flexible tool and you do not mind some tough edges then cross and get a Tegra 2+Android 2.2 tablet like the appearance Vega or the Factor of View Mobii. you may come to be with a tool that is ways extra capable and polished than its charge tag shows.
If you don’t need an iPad, But you still want something slick with a pleasant experience, then don’t buy something now. Wait till the brand new technology of Android three.zero pills are properly released and were out for a few months, then cross and spend around 450 on one with a Tegra 2 chipset.
And In case you want an iPad 2..? I truly can’t think of any cause why you would spend that a great deal cash on an iPad 2, significantly I can not. Except perhaps you had been just a large Apple fan.
As for the destiny? the one’s folks old sufficient to bear in mind the struggle among Microsoft and Apple already recognize what’s coming. I firmly expect that Apple will make all of the equal mistakes once more. They may put the ideology of the ‘Apple Universe’ and the perfection they intention for above openness and They’ll get left behind in the top notch tablet race.
For those which are too young to consider the Microsoft vs. Apple war, watch this carefully and you’re about to peer records repeating itself.
This may be a massive shame because on the subject of ergonomics and ease of use apple is currently beforehand, despite the fact that this lead is shrinking a bit each day.

The iPad owes it success largely to the fact that the platform is the sealed, tightly controlled and polished product of one organisation. The whole platform is tightly controlled by Apple from the hardware spec, to the OS build and even to a degree the Apps that third parties write for it (via control of the SDK with a refusal to support any other run times like Adobe Flash).
But this is where the problems start; this control ends up restricting the platform. There is a reason one of the iPads catch phrases is ‘There’s an App for that’. It’s because there has to be an app for everything. If you want to watch BBC I-player you can’t do it through a browser, you have to use an App. The same is true of ITV Catch up service among others.
Apple has tried for years and they have hardly dented Microsoft’s revenue’s. In fact, Apple have probably helped Microsoft by giving Microsoft someone to hold up as an example of competition every time they are threatened with a break-up because they are too big.
Any rival will have to grow up in a parallel technology sector, and then combine with others in the same position to generate the ‘critical mass’ required to take on Microsoft in its dominant markets.
Well this is happening now, and who are these new players..?
As a hardware platform it blows all previous attempts at mobile touch screen computing out of the water… literally. It’s so far ahead that if the Tegra 2 platform was taking part in an Olympic race with the other offerings (Windows+X86 and Apple) then after the event it would be forced to take a test for performance enhancing drugs and have its gender verified.
Unlike the iPad OS it is also very open, with the source code being released to the public (otherwise known as ‘open source’). This flexibility has one big downside, and one big upside.
On the downside the Android OS is not as slick as the OS on the iPad. It’s a little harder to use and it always feels a bit cruder. In certain areas it may even be a little slower to respond even though the hardware is hugely superior when running on Tegra 2.
You can be fairly certain that no mater which one you buy, there is an app to do whatever it is you are looking for an app to do.
If you are willing to do some reading and explore what the android community offers to get the most from these devices (custom software including the Cyanogen ROM (android 2.3)and resources like and you will end up with a device that is FAR more capable and polished than its price tag suggests.
This will be a big shame because when it comes to ergonomics and ease of use apple is currently ahead, although this lead is shrinking a little each day.
