Rose Parade Cancelled first time since WWII

The 132nd Tournament of Roses Parade, held every New Year's Day in Pasadena, California, has been canceled due to coronavirus concerns, parade officials said.

"While we are extremely disappointed that we are unable to host the parade, we believe that not doing so will prevent the spread of COVID-19, as well as protect the legacy of the Rose Parade for generations to come," said David Eads, Tournament of Roses Chief Executive Director in a news release.

The parade, which has been held since 1891, has been canceled only three times before -- during WWII years of 1942, 1943 and 1945.

Parade officials cited Gov. Gavin Newsom's phase 4 reopening schedule and consideration of health restrictions as their reason for canceling the 2021 parade.

Eads said that planning for the parade typically begins in February the year prior, and advance planning is required by band and equestrian units.

"The construction of our floats takes many months and typically requires thousands of volunteers to gather in ways that aren't in compliance with safety recommendations and won't be safe in the coming months," Eads said.

Planning for the Rose Bowl Football game, which is the College Football Playoff Semifinal, is ongoing.

"We continue to work with the College Football Playoff and our collegiate partners to explore what this year's college football season will look like amidst COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines," Eads said. "While the safety and well-being of the student athletes, university personnel and fans is our top priority, we remain hopeful that the Granddaddy of Them All will take place on New Year's Day."

The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association is still hoping to celebrate the New Year, though.

"We may not be able to host our traditional five-mile march down Colorado Boulevard, but we are exploring new and safe ways we can collectively share in the celebration," Eads said, "and we look forward to announcing further details about our exciting new plans in the coming weeks."

California recently reported its second highest single-day increase in new coronavirus cases and deaths with 11,126 new cases and 140 additional deaths, according to data from the California Department of Public Health.

I decided finally after a few months to once again search for new shoes. I targeted DSW in Pasadena. As some might know and other may be unfamiliar that any clothing item or shoes in the plus size range is much harder to come by in the post pandemic world. I’ve had a few failed attempts to finding new shoes for my feet that are targeted towards work. I’ve got plenty of dress shoe options. Before I bought the totally rockin black high top Chuck Taylor’s/Converse I stopped by Popping Yoke Cafe for brunch. I had the Avocado Benedict - Poached egg, avocado, ham, English muffin, butter, hollandaise sauce. It’s was delicious. It was a lazy Sunday and allure of a drunky brunch was very enticing. I met up with Lisa in Old Town Pasadena as we had made tentative plans early in the week to meet up at some point post holidays. Lisa led the way and we settled on Edwin Mills by Equator. Old Town Pasadena has many small streets or alley ways where you can slip into intimate eateries. I think because Pasadena’s grid goes back to the 1880s when it was a town rather a part of LA’s urban sprawl. Parking is hell and I think Lisa spent 20 plus minutes finding parking. I got us a table and studied the menu. Edwin Mills has bottomless mimosas so o settled on that drinking option. Lisa finally arrived to join me outside with a street adjacent table. The out tables were completely occupied and a buzz with conversations and laughter. Lisa had a Bloody Mary. She ordered the Huevos Rancheros (Huevos rancheros is a breakfast dish consisting of eggs served in the style of the traditional large mid-morning fare on rural Mexican farms) and I couldn’t resist the Braised Short Ribs Chilaquilles (Corn tortillas, Sunny-side Duck Fat Fried Egg, Sour Cream, Red Sauce, Crema Fresca, Radish. Let’s see you get this at the taco truck) Yes, yes, yes! Lisa and I ate with a great deal of joy. We dished, we gossiped and laughed our asses off. Lisa is a technical editor who graduated from USC. We had an educated conversation that didn’t dwell on superstition and was fact based. And such discourse leads to pointing the flaws of the MAGA world of magical thinking and defaming the cult of personality that the GQP suffocating in right now. Our server Efrem was very helpful and attentive to our needs.
