Baguettes going stale? 🥖 Make crostini! 😍 It's basically small crunchy toast crackers and it's brilliant. You can eat them with cheese, tomato, pesto, hummus, or crumbled on soup or salads as croutons. Simply slice your bread to about half a cm, toss (or spray) a bit of oil and salt on them, lay them out in a single layer on a baking tray, bake at 180°c until slightly browning and nicely dry. I nearly broke my bicycle getting this HUGE load of #rescuedfood home this evening! 😵🤯🥖 I love that @olio.app exists for redistributing food to bellies instead of bins, but DEAR GOD this is an obscene amount of food. There is something seriously broken with the shops purchasing and stockings systems for this to be an acceptable amount of #foodwaste for a shop from just ONE DAY. This haul included: A full bin bag of pastries and croissants 🥐 18 bags of panini breads 7 bags of mini baguette 🥖 5 lemons 9 limes and a single mandarin 6 blueberry muffins 2 bags of custard doughnuts 9 packs of sushi 3 bags of salad 2 bags of chopped carrots and swede 1 bag chopped broccoli 3 whole cellophane covered broccoli 12 pairs of packaged avocados 10 loose avocados 4 loaves of bread 4 bags of pancakes 2 bags of cherry tomatoes 5 packs of ready chopped stir-fry veggies 2 packs of ham 1 container of egg mayonnaise 8 bananas 4 plastic boxes of pears inside bags A litre of milk Coleslaw Basil And probably more that I'm forgetting... How in the heck is a shop miscalculating their stock levels so much that this level of loss is not important to them? How on earth is our food system so flawed that we would rather see full shelves even if that food is nearly guaranteed to be wasted? I am glad that olio is stepping in to divert food from actually going to waste, but it absolutely should not be getting this far. 90% of this food was not even discounted to try and sell it. My first @olio.app haul as a #FoodWasteHero is an EPIC amount of pastry! OLIO connects people with each other and with local businesses so surplus food can be shared, not thrown away. This could be food nearing its sell-by date in local stores, spare home-grown vegetables, bread from your baker, or the groceries in your fridge when you go away. OLIO can also be used for non-food household items too. OLIO is super easy! To make an item available, simply open the app, add a photo, description, and when and where the item is available for pick-up. To access items, simply browse the listings available near you, request whatever takes your fancy and arrange a pick-up via private messaging. As a #oliofoodwastehero I collect food from a local shop and list it on Olio so that people can pick it up from me for free!
